Rivier-PLUS Company partnership honors lifelong learning

Dear Friends of Rivier,

A partnership between the University and the PLUS Company, a local organization that supports people with developmental disabilities, encourages lifelong learning for all. Leni Hodgins ’73, PLUS Company Adult Education Director, worked with the University to develop the Campusbased Enrichment Program. This program provides students with developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience life on a college campus.

Fall is in the air, and the opening months of this semester have found multiple generations of Rivier students on campus, especially during September’s Alumni Reunion Weekend. Our reunion classes shared warm memories and stories that reminded me that while the Rivier campus has expanded, the essential values and educational experience rooted in student-faculty engagement continue today.

The cover features one of our exceptional student-athletes highlighting the groundbreaking celebration for the new Raider Athletics Pavilion.

The importance of Rivier athletics to the vibrancy of the campus experience shows that leadership and teamwork count on and off the field. The addition of locker rooms, team rooms, and training and equipment spaces, along with stadium seating, will impact both our student-athletes and Raider fans. This project coincides with the launch of a new baccalaureate program in sport management. Students will be prepared with finance, ethics, business skills, and internships to participate in the sport-focused economic development of New England and beyond.

Vision 2020 continues to bring the campus to life with innovation in the sciences, learning and technology, and a strengths-based student experience. Whether it is Dr. Susan Barbaro leading student-life scientists on a 10-day field study through the Canadian wilderness, Rivier students providing health assessment services through the Mobile Health Clinic, or alumnus Kevin Gill ’11G applying his education as a science data software engineer at NASA, Rivier community members are continuously making a difference.

As we approach Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, I wish you the blessings of family and friends and the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of our day with the hope that our core mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world will ennoble our spirits.

The enrichment program prepares PLUS Company students to be more independent, develop confidence, work on social skills, and broaden their horizons.

Current Rivier students volunteer as teachers and mentors to PLUS Company students. They design the courses and host the group while they are on campus.

“Participants have enrolled in classes ranging from the History of Rock and Roll to Astrology. Their self-confidence blossoms as they learn new things. They proudly wear their Rivier sweatshirts and t-shirts, and eat lunch in the Dining Center with the other students,” says Leni. Rivier students involved in the program gain a better understanding of people with disabilities, develop patience, learn to appreciate different learning styles, and recognize the importance of giving back. This unique partnership is a win for everyone.”

Mobile Health Clinic makes its maiden voyage The St. Joseph Hospital Mobile Health Clinic, staffed by Rivier nursing students, alumni, and faculty, made its inaugural trip into the community to Salmon Brook Senior Housing in Nashua on September 26. The Mobile Clinic’s goal is to provide increased access to healthcare services for those community members with significant barriers to care.

The new vehicle serves Nashua and the twelve surrounding towns of

Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Lyndeborough, Mason, Merrimack, Milford, Mont Vernon, Pelham, and Wilton. Medical staff perform physical assessments, give

vaccinations, and treat urgent conditions; they provide screenings, counseling, and access to management for chronic diseases including lead poisoning, high blood pressure, diabetes, hepatitis

and HIV, as well as mental health issues.

Working with partners at St. Joseph Hospital, the Rivier community is improving the health of New Hampshire residents!

PAL Mentor Program teaches the meaning of community The Nashua Police Athletic League (PAL) operates a youth center in downtown Nashua, offering a safe haven and after-school program to disadvantaged youth ages 7-18. Rivier students volunteer to mentor the children, assist with homework, plan programs and events, and lead recreational sports and activities at the center.

They act as role models for the children, spending time with them on campus and encouraging them to pursue a college education.

ivier receives R top rankings

Money magazine has named Rivier University a 2018 Top 5 New Hampshire College for Best Value.

Rankings considered the quality of education, affordability, and outcomes.

Graduation rates were also a factor; ranked colleges had to achieve at least the median graduation rate for their classification.

For the eighth consecutive year, Rivier has been named a College of Distinction. This award also recognizes the University as a Catholic College of Distinction and New Hampshire College of Distinction. Rivier is one of only two New Hampshire universities to receive this recognition.

3 Student Financial Services enhances funding

incoming requests and approved applications are placed on the Axuda platform for investors to review and fund.

Understanding that financial aid is a key factor in degree completion, Rivier’s Office of Student Financial Services (SFS) has advanced its efforts to help offset educational costs for students. A series of innovative initiatives have increased institutional support, as well as provided greater access to external scholarships and emergency funds.

Rivier is the first, and currently only, college or university in New Hampshire to participate in these programs.

Through a unique partnership, SFS has arranged for Rivier students to participate in ScholarshipUniverse, a web-based technology that enables colleges and universities to match prospective students with a wide range of institutional and vetted external scholarships. Access to a larger pool of scholarships aims to offset tuition costs and reduce student loan debt.

Working with Axuda, a philanthropic arm of Digital Federal Credit Union, students are now able to apply for interest-free, emergency loans. Funds for the loans are crowd-sourced and reinvested into the program as loans are repaid by students. SFS reviews

Gateway to the Election Candidate Series

As part of a new collaboration, the Rivier University President’s Circle, the Greater Nashua Chamber of Commerce, and The Telegraph sponsored The Gateway to the Election: 2018 Candidate Series. Events featured candidates in the State Senate/ Executive Council, Governor, and 2nd Congressional District elections.

Business and community leaders gathered in Nashua as the Democratic and Republican candidates in these races responded to a pre-determined set of questions. Time was reserved for audience questions at the end of each forum.

Tee off for fitness

This fall’s 21st Annual Rivier University Golf Classic raised $43,600 for Raider Athletics as well as health and fitness resources. In addition, the funds provide opportunities for team travel to national and international competitions.

The University’s Golf Classic has become one of the region’s leading golf events, made possible through the generosity of Premier Event Sponsors All Metals Industries and People’s United Bank, as well as the more than 50 corporate and individual sponsors.

“When you support our tournament, you have a direct and lasting impact on our outstanding student-athletes,” Vice President for University Advancement Karen Cooper told event sponsors. “You support students like Megan, a senior nursing major who leads her soccer team as captain and serves as President of the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee. You provide opportunities for our athletes to compete on and off the playing fields and to develop critical leadership skills that will serve them personally and professionally for years to come.”

Samuel Tamposi, Jr. appointed Trustee Emeritus

Former Board of Trustees member Samuel Tamposi, Jr. has been honored with Trustee Emeritus status.

Mr. Tamposi joined Rivier’s Board in 2008 and worked diligently to advance the University’s vision and mission during his tenure. His contributions as Chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee were critical to the initiation and completion of the Gateway Projects and ongoing enhancements to the University.

In recognition of his exemplary service and longstanding commitment, Mr. Tamposi will continue his relationship with the University as Trustee Emeritus. “Sam’s guidance and support have helped shape this University, especially the Gateway Projects,” shares Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier's President.

“He is a transformative leader.”

Local leaders join Board of Trustees

Three new members have been appointed to Rivier’s Board of Trustees, strengthening the Board’s expertise in education, healthcare, business management, and philanthropy. In addition to their professional roles, they support a range of non-profit, community organizations.

“The guidance and support of Board members are integral to the success of our Vision 2020 plans,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “We are honored to welcome Sharon Tamposi, Dr. Jahmal Mosley, and Ted Dudley to the Board of Trustees and appreciate their willingness to employ their talents toward building Rivier’s future.”

Sharon McOsker Tamposi ’91/’95G, MBA is deeply involved in the southern New Hampshire community.

A champion for those in need, she has served as a Board member for some of the most distinguished non-profit organizations in Nashua—Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua, the YMCA, St. Joseph Hospital—lending valuable business expertise to raising awareness and funds to further their good work. An ardent supporter of the University, Mrs. Tamposi received the Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award in 2013 and her generosity and foresight funded the renovation of the former Sunken Garden behind Madeleine Hall, which was renamed the Sharon McOsker Tamposi Alumni Legacy Garden in 2015.

Dr. Jahmal Mosley is the Superintendent of Schools for the Nashua School District. As an advocate for student success, he has served

in public education for 19 years as both a Special Education teacher and former Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Curriculum and Instruction for the Sharon School District in Massachusetts. Dr. Mosley earned a doctorate in educational administration, policy, and research from the University of Massachusetts and a master’s degree in education in special education, elementary, and middle school education from Wheelock College.

Edward (Ted) Dudley III ’00G, MBA has over 30 years of healthcare management experience in governmental, for-profit and nonprofit healthcare organizations.

Currently, he is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Catholic Medical Center (CMC) and Granite One Health System.

Prior to joining CMC, he served as Vice President and CFO at Lawrence General Hospital and as Vice President of Finance at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center.

Mr. Dudley is a Fellow in the Health Care Finance Management Association; he serves on the Health Care Committee at Catholic Charities New Hampshire, and the Boards at Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center and at St. Peter's Home, the largest single-site daycare in New Hampshire.

ARGYLES scholars explore Niagara Escarpment

Supported by a $650,000 National Science Foundation grant to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, ARGYLES (Attract, Retain and Graduate Young LifE Scientists) program scholars participated in a 10-day summer field study along the Niagara Escarpment.

A community-building teaching trip, 10 students accompanied Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Susan Barbaro and Associate Professor of Education Dr. Joseph Spadano to explore a range of geological and environmental sites. Among the many sites visited, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Elora

The students collected water samples for testing and compared them to the previous year’s samples. Results will be compiled in a longitudinal study of the quality of water resources along the Niagara Escarpment. In addition, students documented plant, insect, and fungal diversity while traveling north along the Escarpment.

Toward the end of the field study, Hurricane Florence made landfall in the group’s camp, providing yet another adventure. “Even though Mother Nature was not as kind to us this year, we still came home transformed by new friends, new knowledge, and new outlooks,” shares Dr. Barbaro.

Currently in its second year, ARGYLES is a pilot program to engage biology majors and fuel the STEM workforce in the Northeast. The program provides four-year scholarships, signature learning opportunities, and professional experiences to academically talented students from lower-income families and students from currently underrepresented populations in the STEM workforce.

Athletics Pavilion construction commences with a groundbreaking ceremony at Raider Field.

On an 80°, sunlit day in mid-October, the Rivier community gathered at Raider Field to celebrate the start of construction on the new Athletics Pavilion and enhancements to Raider Diamond. These upgrades promise to transform the gameday experience for Raider student-athletes and fans.

Members of Rivier’s Board of Trustees, administration, athletic coaches, and students donned construction hats and joined President Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, in digging the first shovelfuls of earth at the Pavilion construction site.

With an estimated investment of $5 million, the Athletics Pavilion will provide stadium seating, team rooms, and conference space for pre- and post-game gatherings, a training room, locker rooms, and a press box with an enhanced sound system. A renovation of Raider Diamond will complete the outdoor facilities, adding seating, a press box, team dugouts, and field lighting for nighttime play.

The ceremony included a blessing by Chaplain Brother Paul Demers and remarks by Sister Paula, Vice President for Student Affairs Kurt Stimeling, Athletic Director Joanne Merrill, and Rivier Women’s Soccer Captain Megan Hamel ’19.

“This is an exceptional day for Rivier and Raider Athletics,” said Sister Paula. “The new facilities will contribute to the growth of the University and transform the student-athlete and fan experience, ultimately raising Rivier’s level of play in athletic competition, recruitment, and community engagement.”

“The new Athletics Pavilion and Raider Diamond upgrades show the commitment Rivier has to you, our student-athletes, and all the passion and dedication you bring to your athletics participation and the community,” said Joanne Merrill. “The University is putting its faith in you to build Rivier’s future by being the best you can be in all parts of your college career—in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.”

These facilities will support the University’s NCAA Division III athletic programs for men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse, as well as field hockey and softball. They also will provide an updated venue for the many groups that utilize the University fields for sporting events and summer camps, and for the city’s youth who use the space through local schools and community organizations. Enhancements are anticipated to be completed by late spring 2019.

Enhancement of athletic facilities to support new Sport Management degree Concurrent with construction of the Athletics Pavilion and recognizing the need for talented and trained management professionals, Rivier is launching a new bachelor’s degree in Sport Management for fall 2019. The degree will focus on sport administration and management, marketing, accounting, finance, and communications. Graduates will be prepared to pursue positions as event and travel coordinators, athletic administrators, sport marketing directors, facility operations managers, financial and contract analysts, corporate partnership managers, and others.

In addition to the exceptional opportunities for internships throughout the region, the new Raider athletic facilities will provide experiential opportunities in game-day and facility management for Rivier Sport Management majors.

INNOVATION IN THE SCIENCES

Bethany Haight ’22 and Blake Romano ’21 conduct an experiment in current lab facilities.

A hunger and a drive to always know more led sophomore transfer student Blake Romano to Rivier where he enrolled as a biology major this fall.

“When I see something, I question why,” he shares. Originally enrolled at another institution, his love of science made him rethink his plans and select a University committed to innovation in the sciences. He sees a future in microbiology and immunology where he can apply his research skills to advance scientific inquiry and discovery.

For freshman Bethany Haight, a third-generation Rivier student from Nashua, a desire to help others contributed to her decision to major in biotechnology. Even though her college career is just beginning, she has already set her entrepreneurial sights on creating a new style of treatment to shorten the detoxification process for those in drug and alcohol rehabilitation. “I want to help those suffering in our community by increasing survival rates and lowering recovery costs,” says Bethany, who

recognizes that the opioid crisis touches every one of us in some way.

For both Blake and Bethany, a 10-day summer field study along the Niagara Escarpment through the ARGYLES program (see page 6) solidified their interest in science and in the hands-on experience that Rivier provides.

They are inspired by the University’s commitment to biology and biotechnology through the construction of the Science Center planned to open in the fall of 2020. Blake eagerly anticipates the opening of the new facility and the opportunities it will provide for “more students, more professors, and more community connection in the sciences.” Bethany agrees, highlighting that the new facility will provide more lab space for high quality collaboration between students and professors. They both look forward to working in stateof-the-art laboratories designed to prepare students for the 21stcentury workforce.

Growth in emerging fields such as blockchain, cybersecurity, big data, user experience, machine learning, and the “Internet of Things� requires a workforce with the balance of soft and hard skills provided by a liberal arts education. Graduates will have not only strong technical skills, but will also be prepared to work and communicate as a team.

Rivier’s new B.S. in Cybersecurity Management focuses on the identification, risk assessment, and resolution of cyber, homeland and international security threats, business management, and computer science. Coursework addresses the challenges associated with data security and opportunities to reduce vulnerabilities and emerging threats through critical thinking, communication, and technological innovation.

Graduates will pursue positions as cyber incident responders, electronic forensics investigators, ethical hackers, information security analysts, mobile device data specialists, network security specialists, and many other roles.

Honoring a lifetime of achievement Pauline Taylor, Class of 1968

Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award: The University’s highest honor

The University presented the Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award to Pauline Taylor during Alumni Reunion Weekend. Since graduating from Rivier, she has served as an investment executive, servant leader, volunteer, and mother.

Pauline built her career in the financial services industry, holding senior-level positions at Fidelity Investments and Goldman Sachs. Committed to women’s and children’s issues, she served on the Board of Directors at Connections for Abused Women and Their Children. For 10 years in her retirement, she spent five months annually teaching and caring for the children at Sparrow Village in Johannesburg, South Africa, a hospice and children’s home for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Today, Pauline serves on several Boards and continues her volunteer work with local organizations.

Although she has lived and traveled to places around the globe, Pauline’s commitment to Rivier University has remained. In recognition and appreciation of her advocacy for education, dedication to the University, and service to the world, the Alumni Association was honored to present the 2018 Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award to Pauline Taylor.

Recognizing alumni distinction and achievement On behalf of the Alumni Association, Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM presented four Outstanding Achievement Awards to Rivier graduates during Alumni Reunion Weekend. The awards highlight alumni’s leadership and service to their professions, local communities, and the University, improving the quality of life for New Hampshire residents. Sister Paula commended alumni for their dedicated service noting, “Your contributions and success stories are a source of strength and inspiration to Rivier and to the many people you serve.”

Daniel Sauvageau ’95G has more than 33 years of experience in the private security field and serves as Senior Vice President of Global Security Operations at Fidelity Investments.

He is directly responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of security operations, executive and event security, and crisis management throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Dedicated to the University and educating the next generation of security professionals, he serves as a member of Rivier’s Security Studies Advisory Council.

Linda Brodeur ’82/’01G is a pioneer in education, having served in key teaching and leadership roles at Bishop Guertin High School for the past 26 years. In 2016, she was honored by Enterprise Bank with the Educator of the Year Award, having distinguished herself as the first-ever female president of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Schools and as the first lay president of Bishop Guertin High School.

She is a member of Rivier’s Education Advisory Council and serves the community through Nashua’s Public Health Advisory Council.

Johaida Jean-Francois, RN, ’13 decided early in her career that she wanted to focus on community care. She serves as a labor and delivery nurse at Boston Medical Center (BMC), Boston’s largest safety-net hospital. She also works as a traveling nurse, currently at New York Presbyterian Hospital where she cares for patients in a range of healthcare settings.

Johaida was featured in Forbes magazine in an article on identity in the workplace in which she shared her perspective as a first-generation Haitian American.

Lauren Hall ’12/’16G has served as a special education teacher and team leader at Pelham Elementary School for the last six years. She was appointed as Pelham School District’s first Special Education Coordinator, a leadership role that addresses the educational needs of students with wideranging disabilities. Though early in her career, she has distinguished herself as a leader in education.

I never really know what the day is going to bring! With 450+ children ages 6 weeks through 8th grade, 900+ parents, and 60+ staff, everything I do involves supporting my administrative leadership team, teachers, children, and families.”

Chelsey received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Rivier just last year. She currently works as an emergency room nurse at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which provides comprehensive care as a Level I regional trauma center, and at Elliot Hospital.

HER CHALLENGE| “Being a new nurse can be overwhelming at times. My role as a nurse in the emergency department is challenging, and the pace is fast. I work my hardest to make the chaotic stay for each patient as easy and painless as possible. I strive to keep a smile on my face, no matter how hard my day is, because I know that my day is not nearly as stressful as the day of my patient.”

POINT OF PRIDE| “I was fortunate enough to be hired right out of school in New Hampshire at a Level II trauma center. Riv arranged for me to perform my senior-year capstone preceptorship working with a nurse, who became my mentor in Elliot’s emergency room, which led to my hiring. I am so thankful for everything they have taught me and for the opportunities that have developed over the past year.”

RIV REFLECTION| “Although I didn’t know it at the time, the mock disaster drill led by Professor Patricia Hagan [Captain, U.S. Navy, Retired] in my junior year had a profound impact on my career as a nurse. It made me

more aware of what could happen, and that the goal of emergency nursing is to do the greatest amount of good for the greatest number possible, while keeping resources in mind. Nurses in the emergency room are part of the front line, dealing with the most acute cases that come through the ambulance bay doors. Since being hired, I have joined the HAZMAT team at Beth Israel, so that I can continue to be prepared for what could come my way. The opportunities and experiences I’ve had in nursing school and in the workforce have continued to broaden my horizons and further my career.”

IN THE COMMUNITY| Chelsey is passionate about giving back to the community. In the past, her service included volunteering on campus and in the community with Penny Pickers, a local organization that raises money for families experiencing financial difficulties, and working with a local church to provide presents for families in need during the holiday season. As a newly graduated nurse, she focuses her time on reaching her patient population and creating therapeutic relationships beneficial to all involved.

EXPLORING THE

UNIVERSE When our parents tell us, “you can be anything you want to be,” few of us envision a future in space and even fewer make that dream their reality.

Meet Kevin From the comfort of his lab chair in sunny, southern California, Kevin Gill ’11G has a view into outer space. As a Science Data Software Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), he spends his time planning and designing technology in support of environmental science and space exploration, as well as data visualization and planetary imaging. His recent work not only produced the first-ever close views of Saturn, but also contributed to NASA’s team winning an Emmy Award.

Kevin earned his M.S. in Computer Science at Rivier and has been designing software to render the unique images he gathers ever since. He used an algorithm he developed during his program at Rivier to generate hypothetical images portraying Mars as a vibrant planet with oceans, an oxygen-rich atmosphere, and a green biosphere. The images went viral and within a week his work was featured on major media networks—Discovery News, Fox News, Universe Today, and the Huffington Post. His work captured NASA’s attention and paved the way for his career move.

“Rivier taught me many of the algorithms and development practices I still use today at NASA,” says Kevin. “In fact, I can trace the lineage of code currently running on NASA systems directly to my final master’s project at the University.”

The systems and tools he develops support a range of scientists specializing in the areas of climate, oceanography, asteroids, planetary science, and others.

CASSINI-HUYGENS MISSION The Cassini-Huygens Mission, commonly referred to as Cassini, was a collaborative, 20-year project of NASA, The European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency to explore Saturn.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory was responsible for the design, development, and assembly of the Cassini orbiter.

The spacecraft, launched in 1997, spent seven years traveling to its destination and 13 years exploring Saturn, and its rings and moons. Studies were also conducted of Jupiter along the path to its true destination. Cassini executed an extended series of flybys of Saturn’s moons and then ejected the Huygens probe onto Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, which exceeds both Mercury and Pluto in size. (Saturn has 53 confirmed moons and 9 others identified, but yet to be confirmed.)

The Huygens probe gathered scientific information on Titan’s atmosphere and surface composition. “Cassini made the first observations of a complete seasonal period for Saturn and its moons, flew between the rings and descended into the planet's atmosphere,” according to NASA. Key mission discoveries “included the global ocean with indications of hydrothermal activity within Enceladus, and liquid methane seas on Titan.”

The Grand Finale

Stunning Imagery and Powerful Science

“During the Grand Finale phase of the Cassini Mission, I was chosen to process imagery coming down from the spacecraft,” says Kevin. “For the mission’s final year in orbit about Saturn, I was processing imagery for public and scientific consumption. This includes the closestever color views of the rings, the final views of Titan and Enceladus, close views of Saturn’s upper atmosphere, and Saturn’s southern aurora.” Similar to Earth’s Northern and Southern Lights, Saturn displays spectacular light shows at its northern and southern poles.

JPL’s imagery, web, and mass media coverage of Cassini’s Grand Finale produced an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Interactive Program from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Kevin and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Media Relations and Public Engagement team produced news, website content, educational resources, television footage, live-streamed video, and social media efforts to document and share Cassini’s mission, findings, and final descent into Saturn. Kevin’s compelling, neverseen-before images highlighted Cassini-Huygens’ scientific and engineering achievements in the months-long, multimedia campaign.

“During Cassini’s final plunge into Saturn on September 15, 2017, I was processing the spacecraft’s final images, which were then immediately published to the media,” shares Kevin. “These images included the final pass by Titan, a view of Enceladus setting behind Saturn, and Cassini’s expected impact location on Saturn.”

2 Cassini expanded our understanding of the kinds of worlds where life might exist.

3 Cassini-Huygens revealed Titan to be one of the most Earth-like worlds we’ve encountered and shed light on the history of our home planet.

4 Cassini was, in a sense, a time machine. It revealed the processes that likely shaped the development of our solar system.

5 Cassini’s long mission enabled us to observe weather and seasonal changes on another planet.

6 To Boldly Go For many, Kevin is the ultimate guide for our armchair forays into space. Supporting and sharing scientific discoveries expands the body of knowledge on life within our universe.

“I feel that in my job at NASA I am providing a real benefit to society with the tools and applications I am helping to create,” says Kevin. “I enjoy the creative process and seeing the science requirements become actual tools. I enjoy the challenge of designing and developing new technologies to aid in analysis and discovery.”

Holding the belief that “education is everything,” Brad Kreick and his family are making a difference in the lives of adult learners and in the future of Rivier University.

BY MICHELLE MARRONE Your family’s generosity strengthened programs for continuing education of the adult learner at Rivier. What prompted your family’s commitment to this student population?

Brad: The decision to support Rivier’s ongoing commitment to the adult learner was a very personal one for our family.

My mom, Carol Kreick ‘79/’84G, earned her degrees as an adult learner at Rivier, and the benefit of that experience had a profoundly positive impact on our lives.

While I did not fully appreciate what she was doing at the time, I have vivid childhood memories of my mom working late into the evening on her “schoolwork” at the small dining room table in our home.

The Kreick Family Scholars program and the Kreick Family Scholarship represent critical investments in the education of Rivier students.

Why is education a priority in your philanthropic giving?

Brad: My parents have always believed that “education is everything,” and their actions in support of that belief, have shaped every aspect of our extended family’s personal and professional lives.

The importance of education and its role in building a solid foundation for life were a constant theme in our household and remains so to this day. Interestingly, as I think about our extended family, it is not a coincidence that my mom was an educator, I married a teacher, and the majority of our extended family are educators at the elementary, high school, or college level. The fact that education is a priority in our philanthropic giving is just a logical and natural extension of its importance to our family.

Within the last 20 years, a remarkable 31 million people have attended college but left before they received a degree. How can institutions best address this issue?

Brad: Rivier is on the right track and is an innovator in terms of its support of degree completion programs. The key is that Rivier’s infrastructure and programs are not built on theory. They are practical and designed to support and address the real-world challenges that come with an individual trying to complete his or her degree while raising a family or holding down a job.

Your family’s legacy of service to Rivier began with your father, Dr. John Kreick, a longtime Board member. How has his service inspired you?

Brad: My dad’s Rivier Board service ended almost 8 years ago. However, there is rarely a Board meeting where the unique vision he and his peers brought to Rivier is not on display. My dad’s ongoing collaboration in the early 2000s with other visionary Board members set a course to secure Rivier’s long-term financial stability.

As a result of their financial stewardship, Rivier is thriving. I am inspired daily by the remarkable vision our Board predecessors, including my dad, had in setting Rivier on its present path.

We will enhance our standing as a regional leader in the training of healthcare professionals at a time when there are significant staffing challenges in nursing and related healthcare professions. In addition to your service to Rivier, you volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club, Bishop Guertin High School, and other organizations. What is the most meaningful aspect of service to you?

Brad: Very simple, I enjoy working with young people and helping them develop.

I had a front row seat to watch the positive impact my wife, Beth, had on the countless young people she mentored and worked with as an educator in Nashua.

To this day, she maintains relationships with more of these former students than I can count, and we have enjoyed watching them become moms, dads, doctors, lawyers, etc. For the two of us, there is nothing more rewarding or meaningful than having a positive impact on the life of a young person.

The Board of Trustees has helped Rivier set the course for an innovative future through Vision 2020. How do you see the future unfolding?

Brad: It is an incredibly exciting time at Rivier. Our Vision 2020 plan is poised to become a reality as we embark upon

Dr. Michael McCutcheon, Class of 2018, is a Patrol Sergeant with the Londonderry, NH Police Department and Owner of Forensic Education, LLC. His company offers hands-on police training to law enforcement professionals to help officers feel the excitement and gratification he felt when solving a high-profile case. He prides himself on his ability to reach out to young people and help change the negative perception some may have about police.

“I received numerous awards for cases I solved or calls I responded to, but my biggest accomplishment is changing the perception of the police in the eyes of the community.”

Jacqueline Finn ’49 and Therese Picher Muldoon ’52 meet in Naples, FL, each winter and are “rewriting old age.” Jacqueline is a bocce champion and Therese is a shuffleboard champion. They are pictured after winning championships and MVP awards in their respective sports. They proudly share that Terry was 84 and Jacqueline was 87 when they won their awards!

Not long after earning her degree from Rivier, Lynne Perreault Brady ’61/’64G (above left) was recognized as an Outstanding Young Women of America. After retiring from teaching and leading student trips to France, she moved to South Pasadena, FL. She is pictured here with her husband John and friend Jean. She shares that John missed her so much while he was still living in Massachusetts that he got his pilot’s license just so he could fly to Florida to visit her during the week. Married now for 48 years, the couple has visited Europe together 26 times. When she is not traveling, Lynne volunteers her time at a nursing home in Florida.

Barbara Hansell ’69 recently published a new book titled Socks’ Favorite Time of Day, the story of an extraordinary horse that helps children with special needs.

1970s Dr. Warren Mason ’76G retired from Plymouth State University after 35 years of service. Dr. Mason served as Professor of Corporate Communication in both the College of Business and Department of Communication and Media Studies. The recipient of numerous student awards, including the Distinguished Graduate Teaching Award in Business, he was recently honored with Professor Emeritus status by the University System of New Hampshire. He and his wife of 46 years, Annette, will continue their many European travels in retirement.

Joyce Brazee ’95G completed her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree with a concentration in Nursing Education from Regis College in Weston, MA. She is an Associate Professor of Nursing at MassBay Community College.

Lawrence Best ’98 was named Chief of the Salem Fire Department in Salem, NH. He previously served as acting chief and has more than 30 years of experience. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of Meriden, NH, in 1987.

2010s Michael Downs ’00G was named Principal at Andrews Middle School in Medford, MA. He served most recently as the assistant principal at North Reading High School in Reading, MA. He has more than 18 years of administrative experience as well as being a retired U.S. Air Force Captain, having served 20 years at home, abroad, and in the Reserves.

Shaun Doherty ’10 was hired to manage the campaign of Congressional candidate Robert Burns.

Doherty is a former two-term New Hampshire State Representative from Pelham, NH. He has previously worked for candidates including Governor Chris Sununu, former Congressman Frank Guinta, and assisted with Secret Service motorcades for President Trump and Vice President Pence.

Lauren Hall ’12/’16G was named Pelham School District’s first Special Education Coordinator, a leadership role that supports the individualized needs of students with wide-ranging disabilities. Lauren has been a kindergarten special education teacher and team leader at Pelham Elementary School for the last six years.

In an effort to help their local community struggling with the opioid epidemic, Mary Ellen Cooper ’03G and her sister Patty-Jo Hanley formed Into Action Recovery, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a long-term educational, therapeutic, and spiritual 12-step program for men with opiate and/ or alcohol addiction. She shares that since February 2015 they have worked tirelessly to hold fundraising events to help families in crisis, and is proud to report that the organization recently celebrated the opening of their highly structured and affordable residential

Sister Joan made her religious profession in August 1969. She earned her bachelor’s degree in French and master’s degree in Education at Rivier. She worked at Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson for 19 years, first as a French teacher and later as a guidance director.

During this time, she was active in the St. Matthew Adult Ecumenical Sacred Dance Choir; she took joy in combining the religious and the arts in inspiring ways.

Sister Joan Joyal, pm Class of 1965

Sister Joan served on the Rivier Board of Trustees as well as on the Board of Trustees at AnneMarie House, an organization that supports the needs of families experiencing homelessness as they work to achieve self-sufficiency. She was a strong fundraiser for Anne-Marie House and other local charities. During her tenure at the University, she served as director of academic advising, associate dean, and associate registrar.

The University recognizes Sister Joan’s service to students, the Rivier and Sisters of the Presentation of Mary communities, and those in need in the local community with appreciation and admiration. She is fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
