From the President Dear Friends of Rivier, In this issue of Rivier Today, you will read of remarkable people doing remarkable things. Rivier faculty have launched full-force into grant writing. As a result, the University has received highly selective grants from the federal government, Endowment for Health, Hannaford Foundation, and the Council of Independent Colleges in collaboration with the Lilly Endowment. These grants have a common theme of mission-centric outreach as Rivier faculty and students create a 21stcentury workforce.

In today’s hyper-media environment, first-year students had the opportunity to step back and reflectively consider their roles in the world through funding from the NetVUE grant.

The Rivier ethos of service is also reflected as students reach out to medically underserved populations for biometric screenings and nutrition education.

If you have visited the campus recently, you have seen firsthand the transformation of our Campus

Quad. The Gateway Projects extended along South Main Street now connect Guild Hall, Trinity Hall, Adrienne Hall, and the Dion Center. This transformation elevates the Heritage Plaza with the sculpture of Blessed Anne Marie Rivier as a true crossroad of the campus. This has allowed us to reimagine the setting for community gatherings and outdoor events.

Remarkable people include our many alumni and friends who contribute to the vitality of the Rivier educational experience.

Our growing list of benefactors in the President’s Report of Donors is included in this issue. Your support is deeply appreciated and your contributions impact students beyond your imagination.

The annual Alumni Reunion Weekend in September is always a highlight of the year. It is an opportunity to reconnect across the decades and to experience the excitement on campus generated by new academic programs and initiatives such as Global Scholars

and the Employment Promise Program. Rivier alumni are always welcomed in a special way, and I invite you to attend this year’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony in December, participate in our mentoring program, and attend athletic events.

Each fall reminds us of the energy of first-year students, faculty contributions that reach deep into the Greater Nashua community, the role of adult learners striving to excel in their professions, and the far-reaching impact of clinical experiences, practicums, and student teaching.

As we continue to move forward, we embrace our heritage and the legacy created by those who have gone before us. Thank you for your valued contributions as a member of the Rivier community.

For the RECORD Rivier awarded competitive $650,000 National Science Foundation STEM grant The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Rivier’s biology department a five-year, $650,000 grant to support the education of young scientists.

The grant will fund a pilot program titled ARGYLES (Attract, Retain and Graduate Young LifE Scientists) to engage biology majors as emergent scientists who will contribute to the vitality of the STEM workforce in the Northeast.

Preference will be given to minority, female, and first-generation learners, who are currently underrepresented in the STEM disciplines, as a provision of the NSF grant. The program’s key components include summer field study, peer and faculty mentoring, community building, independent research proposals and projects, travel to scientific conferences, and workforce preparation.

“In addition to supporting current STEM students, this national grant will also enable Rivier to expand a model for student engagement in other disciplines,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “The ARGYLES program offers four pillars of support: academic, financial, vocational, and communal. In addition, the focus on experiential learning will offer a hands-on educational experience and build diversity within the scientific community.”

ARGYLES program objectives guide students from the campus to the community to their careers.

These objectives include recruitment and enrollment of qualified students; building community within the cohort, and active participation in campus life and the Greater Nashua community; increased retention and graduation rates; and continuation to STEM graduate study or employment in their field within six months of graduation.

“We’re excited for this opportunity to expand Rivier’s biology and biotech programs,” says Dr. Susan Barbaro, Associate Professor of Biology, Department Coordinator, and the grant’s author. “We have already established a partnership with faculty and staff at the University of Waterloo in Ontario as we plan for a community-building teaching trip next summer.”

In addition to potential expansion to other Rivier academic departments, the program’s successes will be shared with peer institutions through conference presentations, news releases, and peer-reviewed journals to encourage program adoption at other colleges and universities.

Tew’s Falls on the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario, Canada

ARGYLES participants will engage in a ten-day field experience with faculty, peer mentors, and other students from Rivier and the University of Waterloo to explore geological and environmental sites along the Niagara Escarpment in Canada. This region offers the opportunity for students to study geological and glacial features and fossils; observe the wide variety of habitats the Escarpment supports—more than 300 species of birds, 53 types of mammals, 36 species of amphibians and reptiles, 90 kinds of fish and more than 1,500 different plants; conduct water testing and examine issues related to fresh water; and to examine the Escarpment’s economic importance to the province of Ontario and the issues of balancing protection, conservation, and development.

For the RECORD One Book, One Campus program engages campus community A tradition for the campus community and integral to the first-year student experience, the One Book, One Campus program engages students, faculty, and staff in a common reading experience. Each year a book is selected that responds to the questions “Who am I?” and “What is the world?” and addresses the University’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.

The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore was selected for this year’s program.

The book is required summer reading for incoming students.

It is integrated into the first two weeks of the Student Success: Campus to Community

program, which helps freshmen understand themselves as learners and as servant leaders.

Guiding civic engagement inside the classroom and in the Greater Nashua community, the book selection initiates development of broader cultural perspectives.

Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President, took part in the experience and shared some insights in her address at the Academic Convocation in September.

“The lives of the two Wes Moores remind us that everyone has a story to tell,” says Sister Paula. “Do you pay attention to your story: where you want to go and who you want to be?

Pay attention—pay attention to challenges and you can

overcome them, pay attention to new beginnings and you can become a new person, pay attention to your dreams and you can achieve them.”

The campus community was invited to read the book and to join in the activities planned to explore the book’s topics, including Rivier’s own “TED Talk,” which took place on September 19.

The One Book, One Campus program creates a common ground for discussion within the freshmen class and Rivier community. The discussions and accompanying activities create a shared experience focusing on Rivier’s mission and core values and bringing the community closer together.

The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates Two kids named Wes Moore were born blocks apart within a year of each other. Both grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods; both hung out on street corners with their crews; both ran into trouble with the police. How, then, did one grow up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other ended up a convicted murderer serving a life sentence? Wes Moore, the author of this fascinating book, sets out to answer this profound question. In alternating narratives that take readers from heart-wrenching losses to moments of surprising redemption, The Other Wes Moore tells the story of a generation of boys trying to find their way in a hostile world.

Hannaford grant supports new community health initiative The University has received a $25,000 grant from the Hannaford Charitable Foundation for a new program titled Reach for the Stars. This initiative supports Rivier and Hannaford’s mutual priorities to improve community health, increase food security and access to nutrition, and advance education in the communities they serve.

Rivier nursing students and faculty will provide health screenings at the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter, which serves low-income, medically underserved adults and families. Individuals whose screenings indicate higher risk for adverse health will be invited to participate in a nutrition education intervention, provided by the dietitian at the local Hannaford retail store, and will receive healthy food vouchers.

Dean of Nursing and Health Professions Dr. Paula Williams, Assistant Professor Donna Proulx, Instructor Cheryl Bragdon, and Assistant Professor Judi O’Hara authored the grant and will oversee the program’s implementation.

Inspired Spaces Renewal project enhances Campus Quad THIS PAST SUMMER, RIVIER’S Campus Quad underwent a major renovation to increase its functionality and to beautify the campus center.

Consistent with the design and materials used in the Gateway Projects, new terraced steps and walkways surround the Quad and provide additional avenues of access to residence halls and administrative buildings. A large patio with seating walls

6

extends beyond the bottom of the Dion Center steps. New landscaping enhances the outdoor space and creates a welcoming entrance to the Dion Center.

“Our intent is that the Quad will serve as a gathering place,” says Kurt Stimeling, Vice President for Student Affairs. “The open green space, new patio, and seating areas invite students and campus groups to meet, study, and enjoy outdoor activities in this

vibrant community space.”

Alumni were among the first to utilize the patio area, meeting there for a barbecue luncheon and the President’s Cocktail Reception during Alumni Reunion Weekend in September. (See page 10.)

The Mighty Oak Within New initiative helps students identify their greatest potential

by Michelle Marrone JUST AS AN OAK TREE LIES WITHIN an acorn, each student comes to Rivier with a unique set of talents and potential for growth and accomplishment. While some arrive with a career field in mind—nursing, education, business management—many come in search of a vocation and an education. A new initiative, REACH@RIV: Living a Life that Matters, offers students the opportunity to engage thoughtfully and practically about their futures and life choices.

This initiative is supported by a $50,000 Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) grant awarded to the University by The Council for Independent Colleges and the Lilly

Endowment, Inc. Grant funds enabled thirty first-year students to participate in the three-day vocational discernment program in September, prior to the start of the fall semester. Daily activities focused on identifying values, goals, individual competencies, and the realities of pursuing each of these.

“The intentionality of the program makes it truly unique,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “To have students focus on what’s important to them, the lives they want to lead, and how their choices contribute to building their futures and the greater community can yield amazing results.”

REACH@RIV: Living a Life that Matters students spent time exploring and conducting community service in downtown Nashua.

Telos A Greek word meaning the end goal, result, or fulfillment.

Christians believe that life events move toward an end goal of developing a Christ-like character—one of leadership, service, and compassion. As a Catholic university, Rivier strives to help students discern their individual life goals and identify pathways to personal and professional success.

Program activities centered on gaining a sense of self in the world, self-reliance and how each person lives their life, naming life goals and identifying the steps toward achievement, and one’s responsibility to others as a citizen of the world. Utilizing Strengthsfinder software, students completed exercises to identify their personal strengths and the careers that require those proficiencies.

“The program isn’t about ‘career’ as its own telos or end goal,” says Program Coordinator and Professor Brad Stull. “It’s about searching out one’s values, aspirations, and strengths to discern a meaningful and fulfilling life path. We explore career options as a means for each student to achieve his or her goals. The hope is that they will find that which is rewarding and do it.”

In addition to personal vocational discernment, the REACH@RIV: Living a Life that Matters experience helps students develop their appreciative intelligence, the ability to see beyond the present and discover the hidden value in people and situations to build a better future. Cultivating this ability encourages leadership, creativity,

and innovative thinking in the classroom and the workplace.

Kayla Phelps ’20 is a strong supporter of the program. “I would say [joining the program] was one of the best decisions I’ve made so far. It really helped me to transition into college and opened my eyes to something bigger than just being here to get an education.”

REACH@RIV: Living a Life that Matters is an optional component of the first-year student REACH experience. All freshmen take part in Rivier’s REACH program, which stresses academic and personal growth, community engagement, and service to others. The program is founded on five basic tenets: Respect: Respect oneself and others with civility at all times.

Engagement: Actively participate in your education, learning, leading, and serving beyond the classroom in the greater global community.

Accountability: Accept responsibility for your words and actions.

Compassion: Commit to upholding the dignity and value of all human life and the care of all creation, seeking the common good and the well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.

Honesty: Be authentic intellectually, spiritually, and socially, celebrating the open exchange of ideas and beliefs.

Alumni reconnect and celebrate friendships, old and new, at Reunion Weekend 2016 THIS FALL’S GATHERING CELEBRATED alumni and their connection to the University in many special ways. In addition to enjoying time with friends and activities on campus, the community honored graduates for their contributions and service to their professions and to the University.

Welcoming alumni from the Classes of 1954 through 2016—a span of more than 60

years—the weekend began with breakfast and campus tours highlighting the Gateway Projects completed last year and the revitalization of the Campus Quad.

A barbecue luncheon was served on the newly opened Dion Center terrace overlooking the Quad.

Saturday afternoon, enjoying a little wine, a little painting, and a lot of conversation.

They left with lasting memories of the day and a memento suitable for framing.

The highlight of the weekend took place on Saturday night as alumni and donors attended the President’s Cocktail Reception and Alumni Awards Dinner. The evening joined together two signature University

events: celebration of Alumni Reunion Weekend and recognition of Leading the Way donors.

“Tonight, we celebrate each of you as we reflect on the significance of your milestone anniversaries, and as we continue to appreciate the generous and loyal support of our Leading the Way donors,” said Karen Cooper, Vice President for University Advancement. “You all share a common belief in the value of higher education,

in the unique advantage that the Rivier University experience provides, and in the importance of our mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.

It is our privilege to celebrate with you this evening.”

The Class of 1966 was inducted into the Rivier University Golden Society, acknowledging the 50th anniversary of their graduation and their devotion to their alma mater. The Sister Madeleine of Jesus

Award, the University’s highest alumni honor, was presented at the dinner. This award recognizes the lifetime achievement of alumni who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and contribution to the University and extraordinary service to their communities. In addition, four alumni received the University’s inaugural Alumni Achievement Awards highlighting their professional accomplishments and continued connection to their alma mater.

| Alumni Reunion Weekend 2016

Celebrating alumni distinction and achievement New this year, the University presented Alumni Achievement Awards to outstanding individuals who have utilized their Rivier education to make a difference in their profession and have maintained a connection with their alma mater.

The Young Alumni Award was presented to Hollyann DeCarteret, Class of 2013. This award recognizes a Rivier graduate of the last five years who has become a distinguished young professional. DeCarteret works as a maternity nurse at Elliot Hospital and provides preventative care at Maxim Healthcare. She serves as a member of the Rivier Alumni Council, as an Alumni Mentor, and volunteers with the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program.

For her selfless devotion to others, especially the poor and the powerless, embodying Rivier’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world, the Alumni Association was honored to present the 2016 Sister Madeleine of Jesus Award to Susan Zator, Class of 1966.

Zator earned a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1966 and went on to pursue a nursing degree from Columbia University and master’s degree in public health/midwifery from Johns Hopkins University. She has made it her life’s work to solve the healthcare issues of marginalized populations. Working in remote regions of the United States and the world, she has tended to the needs of rural farming families, migrant workers, American Indians, at-risk women, the elderly, the mentally ill, and the homeless.

Rivier University students have been blessed by her generous heart, as well. With the encouragement of her devoted husband Harry Merritt, the Josephine and Jacob Zator Scholarship was established in honor of Susan’s parents, who were proud Rivier supporters. In their memory, scholarships are awarded annually to Rivier students pursing degrees in biology, business, or nursing.

The Outstanding Educator Award was presented to Chantal Alcox, Class of 1997G, for her commitment to education and community.

Alcox has been a third grade teacher, assistant principal, and is currently the principal at Heron Pond Elementary School in Milford. She has dedicated her 27-year career to enhancing educational opportunities and advancing student achievement in the town where she and her family have made their home.

The Outstanding Nurse and Healthcare Leader Award was presented to Cynthia Arcieri, Class of 1996/2004G, for her commitment to excellence and service to patients. Arcieri works at St. Joseph Healthcare as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive with a wide range of leadership responsibilities. She also provides clinical care as a nurse practitioner in the St. Joseph Hospital Cancer Center, and volunteers at several local nonprofit organizations.

The Outstanding Business Leader Award was presented to Michael Croatti, MBA, Class of 2009G, for his leadership and his dedicated service to the community and Rivier. Croatti is Senior Vice President at UniFirst Corporation, where he leads all service and operations for North America. Croatti serves on the Alumni Council and the President’s Circle Leadership Committee, and as an Alumni Mentor. He volunteers with Operation Care for Troops and initiated the “Thanks from Home” program at UniFirst to send care packages to troops stationed overseas.

Answering the Call Innovative Rivier Success and Visionary Program advances nursing community leadership and diversity

by Michelle Marrone WITH SUPPORT FROM THE HEALTH Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the University embarked on a program to answer the call for greater diversity in the nursing workforce.

HRSA initiated a Nursing Workforce Diversity grant program, which awarded Rivier nearly a million dollars to fund the Rivier Success and Visionary Program (RSVP) from 2014–2016. The diversity

initiative strives to increase nursing education opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities, which are underrepresented among registered nurses (RNs).

“The Rivier Success and Visionary Program continues the University’s mission and tradition,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President. “In accommodating student’s needs and workforce demands, we fill a vital role in the local and nursing communities.”

The goal is to increase the graduation rate for these students and to build a nursing workforce that reflects the growing diversity of U.S. communities. According to a survey cited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, nurses from minority backgrounds comprise 19% of the RN workforce, while the U.S. Census Bureau identified 37% of the population in 2012 as belonging to ethnic and minority groups and projects minority populations to become the majority by 2043.

RSVP students must meet all University admission requirements for nursing students, which are more stringent than those for students pursuing other academic majors; have demonstrated a strong work ethic; and commit to the summer enrichment program. Dr. Judith Stanford, RSVP Coordinator, is impressed with the students’ dedication. “I am in awe of their devotion to the nursing profession, to their academic success, and to each other,” she says.

The program offers support to RSVP students in several ways throughout the year: academic, communal, and financial.

Summer enrichment and bridge programs, developed from grant funds, have provided students with academic and nursing profession workshops, introduction and access to University support services, peer and faculty mentoring, and engagement in

community service and cultural enrichment events. Cocurricular activities were funded with an additional grant received from the Endowment for Health. There is also a strong focus on community building within the group; supporting each other through the rigors of the nursing program is a key component to their success.

Sophomore Rebeca Cruz attests to the value of the RSVP community, “This program helps provide the foundation you need to start the year and opens you up to a circle of people who will see you through your four years—every step of the way.”

The ultimate success of this program lies in Rivier’s ability to sustain and retain these students through to graduation, have them pass the RN licensure exam, and secure nursing positions. Results to date are positive. All students that joined RSVP in 2015 returned to the University

for the fall 2016 semester—an impressive 100% retention rate. “These students have excelled in many ways,” says Paula Randazza, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs. “They became ambassadors to new students, reaching out as leaders; nearly all got involved in extracurricular activities during their freshman year; and many are taking on campus leadership roles as sophomores.”

“Our second-year students’ achievements are nothing short of remarkable,” says Dr. Paula Williams, Dean of the Division of Nursing and Health Professions. “What these students have accomplished thus far is a point of pride for themselves and for the University. I have no doubt that Rivier’s RSVP graduates will not only serve their patients as highly skilled RNs, but they’ll also serve as role models to the next generation of nurses.”

What were your expectations coming into the program?

Before the program, I was extremely nervous about having to move on campus. I don’t have any siblings so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was also nervous about the classes because I thought I may be behind or not as prepared as other students.

What do you think now that you’ve completed the RSVP summer program?

Now, I love the program and would do it all over again. The classes were so helpful, and so was all the faculty. I got to meet some amazing people that have the same goals and motivations that I have for the nursing program.

What was the biggest benefit of summer program for you?

The biggest benefit was learning about the resources that Rivier has to offer and to know that there are so many people who are willing to help students in all majors with homework assignments. With this program, I now feel like a prepared freshman who is ready to take on the year.

Smashers cricket team wins 2016 championship

YES, RIVIER HAS A MEN’S cricket team. And not just a team—a championship team.

Initiated three years ago by the Office of Global Engagement, the Smashers is comprised of international graduate students.

Team members come from countries where cricket is a popular sport, and they’ve hit their stride in New England league play.

“This is a historic moment for Rivier University—our first cricket championship win,” says Sister Paula Marie Buley, IHM, Rivier’s President.

“We are incredibly proud of these student-athletes and congratulate them on their athletic and academic accomplishments.”

The Telugu Association of Greater Boston, a regional Indian community organization,

conducts the Telugu Premier League, which attracts players and teams from Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

The Telugu Premier League 2016 IV edition tournament was held in Nashua on five grounds simultaneously this past August.

The Smashers competed with 15 other cricket teams in the tournament, which included more than 160 cricketers.

The Smashers emerged victorious, the only team to have won all five of its tournament matches. Thondaladinne Pedda

Basha, a candidate in Rivier’s M.S. in Computer Science program, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for his all-around performance with his bat, bowling and fielding.

Team captains included General Captain Krishna Reddy Akula, Captain Kaushik Reddy Kancharla, and Vice Captain Rithish Reddy Katpally.

“Playing for Rivier has given me and team Smashers great pleasure,” says Kancharla.

“Winning for Rivier was a proud moment for us.”

FACULTY PROFILE On the shoulders of giants Susan E. Barbaro, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Biology Biology Department Coordinator

DR. SUSAN BARBARO FOUND A NEW academic home 13 years ago when she accepted a position in Rivier’s biology department. An educator and active researcher, she had completed a major water studies research project just prior to joining the University and was eager to return to teaching. Finding a position that would allow her to teach and to continue her research was the goal, but institutional fit was also a major consideration. “I based my decision on the University's well-articulated mission and the quality of people I met while interviewing,” says Dr. Barbaro.

The move required her to reassess her personal research pursuits; however, engagement with students has provided new perspectives and opportunities. “As I have been broadening my interests, I have included students in my projects, and they have contributed to redefining my research.”

That research takes place inside the laboratory and in the field helping students to learn and to develop a passion for science.

“I love the ‘aha’ moments, which come in two categories,” says Dr. Barbaro. “The first category is the ‘Come to Understanding’ or ‘Making Connections’ moment and is recognized when students say things like: ‘I see it.’ ‘I get it now.’ ‘So that’s how that works.’ The other ‘aha’ category is what I call the ‘Getting Into It’ moment and sounds like this: ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ ‘Awesome.’ and ‘I love this.’ When these two moments come together, I feel like I have done my job.”

An ardent believer in hands-on learning, Dr. Barbaro’s students conduct field research in the U.S. and other countries. They have taken part in her personal research projects at the Nissitissit River in New Hampshire, for which she serves as a trustee with the Nissitissit River Land Trust. In 2013, Dr. Barbaro accompanied a group of students to

Haiti where they conducted a safe drinking water study analyzing water samples for organisms associated with poor sanitation.

She is preparing to take another student group to Canada in 2017 to introduce them to the geology and flora of the region and to test water retrieved from various locations that extend from Niagara Falls to Georgian Bay. Dr. Barbaro works collaboratively with biology majors to plan and conduct their own research projects as well, which are required for successful completion of their degree. In some cases, students apply for grant funds to support their research or present their results at regional conferences.

“By conducting these individual research projects, students experience many facets of biological research and discover which aspects they enjoy most,” explains Dr. Barbaro. “It helps prepare them for their first professional positions and to make decisions about where they want to take their careers.”

A network of strong support motivates students to do the hard work necessary to become accomplished scientists. “The concepts that tie together life can be complex and difficult to understand,” says Dr. Barbaro.

“To become familiar with these concepts, time and hard work are required. Applying the concepts adds additional complexity to the learning process.” She believes the most valuable lesson she can teach her students is to be patient. “As scientists, we are obliged to be accurate and unbiased. Impatience can lead to mistakes or missing something important.”

Dr. Barbaro believes everyone’s success—especially her own—is “built on the shoulders of giants.” “What I value most about my Rivier experience are the relationships I have forged with other community members. My colleagues have been generous to me: they have befriended me, mentored me, and helped support my efforts to be the best educator that I can be.

Our talented staff members have collaborated with me and work hard to maintain and advance the University’s mission. The students have been appreciative of my efforts made on their behalf, and I appreciate what they have done for me. What I am most grateful for is this community.”

In 2016, Dr. Barbaro authored a grant which resulted in a $650,000 National Science Foundation STEM grant award for Rivier’s biology department. (See page 4.) The grant will provide support for academically talented students from underrepresented groups. “There is a significant attrition rate for women and minorities in the sciences, due in large part to a lack of appropriate support systems,” says Dr. Barbaro. “I believe the strength of Rivier’s current biology program was instrumental in securing this grant; these funds will enable us to once again elevate the student experience.”

Grant funds will establish a program titled ARGYLES—Attract, Retain, and Graduate Young LifE Scientists. The program acknowledges that education and careers are the result of many support systems—the collective body of knowledge generated by others, financial assistance, the guidance of mentors, and collaboration with professors, professionals, and peers.

Dr. Barbaro sees community building as a major component of ARGYLES’ success.

For the last six years, Messier has been Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Excelitas Technologies in Waltham, Massachusetts—a leading global provider of innovative photonics products and solutions serving both commercial and defense markets. He is responsible for developing the company’s global human resources strategy and leading core initiatives that build a strong global team. With a career spanning three decades, he has held similar positions at Starent Networks Corp., Monster Worldwide, Progress Software, and other technology related businesses. Thriving in this fast-paced, high-growth environment, Messier enthusiastically addresses changes in the workforce with regard to globalization, increased use of technology, remote workers, advancing diversity, and how companies attract and retain key talent. “The biggest change has been technology, and more specifically, the impact of the internet on the human resource field,” says Messier. Recruitment that has traditionally been local is now global. Technology has provided companies access to a wider range of applicants, decreased the hiring process time, and allowed for onboarding and training via the web. Technology has also allowed for more flexibility and freedom in the workplace with some employees working from home offices even if home is across the country or around the world. He embraces these challenges, welcoming the fact that no two days are alike, and that constant change is an everyday occurrence in his work.

Messier finds the work he does in individual coaching sessions to be the most important part of his job. “Working closely with someone to help them overcome a developmental or a work challenge, and then to see them thrive and come back and thank you for the role you played in helping them to succeed, is so rewarding.” He enjoys mentoring colleagues in his industry and is

a Board member at the Human Resources Leadership Forum.

He earned his undergraduate degree in human resource management and his Rivier MBA provided him with the additional education and broad-based business knowledge that positioned him for future success. “I feel that my education, along with my experience, drive, and support from my family, are the main factors in my success to date,” says Messier. Completing his MBA in the evening while working fulltime, Messier enjoyed the fellowship of the campus environment, the convenience of the classes, and the fact that the faculty had real-world business experience. “I appreciate that Rivier focuses on the needs of its students by providing opportunities to learn and grow in a challenging but supportive setting,” says Messier.

Messier is most proud of the fact that he’s been able to balance the demands of his career with the demands of his family, while maintaining a focus on his faith, his friends, and his passions for sports and music.

He offers the following career advice to those that may be just starting out or are in the earlier stages of their careers. “Keep in mind that you control your success and destiny in life,” says Messier. “Don’t wait around for others to plan it and don’t look to blame others for opportunities missed.

Professor of Art and Artist-in-Residence Sister Theresa Couture, pm, has been selected for an intensive artist’s residency at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, Massachusetts, the largest center for contemporary visual and performing arts in the United States. During her residency, Sr. Theresa will explore nihonga, Japanese mineral painting, techniques in the context of concentrating on abstraction in art.

Excellence in nursing leadership Professor of Nursing Dr. Denise Baxter and Assistant Professor of Nursing and Director of Undergraduate Nursing Education Judi O’Hara were honored at the New Hampshire Nurses Association Awards Banquet in October. O’Hara received the prestigious President’s Award, and Dr. Baxter, nominated by her colleagues in the Division of Nursing and Health Professions, was presented with the Professional Advancement Award. The President’s Award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence in nursing leadership.

The Professional Advancement Award is given to a registered nurse who has made a significant contribution toward developing or advancing the professional practice of individuals or groups, or the art and science of nursing.

Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Marilyn Daley, APRN, CHFN, was recently appointed Chair of the Government Affairs Commission for the New Hampshire Nurses Association (NHNA). She traveled to Washington in September to attend a lobbyist meeting for the ANA to discuss current topics in healthcare.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Deborah Dodge, RN, MSN, CNE, was elected as Vice President of Epsilon Tau-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing.

Nursing Instructor Diane Droutman, Ph.D.(c), M.S., RN, has been appointed to the Board on Health Science Program for Nashua High Schools. She attended the National League for Nursing Educational Summit to discuss opportunities for collaboration, lifelong learning, innovation, scholarship, mentoring, and service.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Karen Frenn, Ed.D., RN, CNE, served as a peer evaluator for an Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) site visit in New York last February. She was also honored to serve as a member of ACEN’s Evaluation Review Panel (ERP) in Atlanta, Georgia this past June. The ERP reviews multiple site evaluations and serves as the second step in the accreditation process.

Senior Lecturer of Nursing Dr. Mark Hand presented his dissertation research titled “Job Satisfaction and Intent to Leave for Nursing Assistants in the Hospital Setting” at the Southern Nurse Research Society’s 30th Annual Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia in February.

Undergraduate faculty attendees gained insight into mathematical and computer sciences roles in homeland security. Dr. Magnus also presented a keynote address titled “Real Math Problems have No Clean Solutions— The Role of Mathematical Modeling in the Classroom” at the Community College System of New Hampshire Mathematics Learning Communities Summer Institute.

Sister Lucille Thibodeau, p.m., Ph.D. presented a paper at the Summer School of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics titled “‘All Creation Groans’: The Lives of Factory Farm Animals in the United States.” The conference explored the ethics of eating animals, and Sister Lucille’s contribution was an examination of factory farming in the U.S. from the 1960s to the present.

He presented the session “Problem Solving without Figures” based on his recently published book of the same name. The book promotes problem solving through problem-solving theory and provides a practical system for teaching and learning mathematics, advancing critical 21stcentury skills.

Pauline Jambard ’59 was honored by a former student who submitted an impressive tribute to Readers Digest’s column titled “My Teacher Hero.” Her fifth grade student from 1969 wrote about the encouragement and support Pauline offered her as a child, which left a lasting impression on her.

Gaffney receives top honors from President Obama Dr. Ann Gaffney ’14G received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in September. Dr. Gaffney was one of 213 recipients from across the nation named by President Obama for 2016.

In a White House press release, President Obama commented on the importance of these educators’ work in teaching STEM skills.

“The recipients of this award are integral to ensuring our students are equipped with critical thinking and problemsolving skills that are vital to our Nation’s success,” President Obama said. “As the United States continues to lead the way in the innovation that is shaping our future, these excellent teachers are preparing students from all corners of the country with the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills that help keep us on the cutting-edge.”

Dr. Gaffney was a member of Rivier’s inaugural doctorate class, receiving her Doctor of Education in Leadership and Learning degree in 2014. Currently, she teaches mathematics at Londonderry Middle School.

Elda Dawber ’69, won the Independent Publishers of New England 2015 prize for literary fiction for her novel Wait Until I’m Dead!. It is based on her career in social work and celebrates the courage and resilience of those healing from childhood trauma.

Jeanette McGillicuddy ’75G/’79G/’91G retired from Medtronic, PLC as a senior IT Program Manager for IT Service Management and is serving as PresidentElect of the Minnesota local interest group of the IT Service Management Forum, United States Chapter, for 2016 and will serve as President in 2017. She is also a Track Chair for security, risk, and vulnerabilty for Fusion 16, a national conference for service management professionals in the industry.

Steve Brown ’80G was named by the Merrimack Valley chapter of SCORE as a member of their volunteer nonprofit organization and a certified smallbusiness mentor.

Technical Services Librarian Elaine Bean ’82, ’87G recently celebrated her 40th anniversary at the Regina Library. Elaine has previously served as reference librarian, head of user services, and systems librarian during her extensive career at Rivier.

Vincent Donovan ’91G released his debut novel Chasing Mayflies, which was runner-up for the Tuscany Prize for Catholic Fiction. He shares the message that it is never too late to seek forgiveness, and the stairs to heaven are built with good works.

Christopher F. Sullivan ’91G, above, as appointed the first lay president of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He has served the school for more than 30 years in various education and administrative roles.

Stan Dennis ’93G was named Chief Executive Officer of National Home Health Care Corp., a leading provider of home healthcare services headquartered in Scarsdale, New York.

Liz LaRose ’93 has been hired as President of the Monadnock United Way in Keene. Her role includes engaging the entire Monadnock community in addressing the region’s most pressing social needs through a Collective Impact model. She is excited about the opportunity to work within a highly supportive community to improve the lives of those who live and work in the region.

Dr. Sara Stetson ’93/ ’97G/ ’14G was named Director of Student Services for Andover, Massachusetts schools. Dr. Stetson has worked previously as an educator, learning disabilities specialist, school psychologist, and mentor to special education administrators in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Rivier.

Vivien Green ’96G has utilized her MBA education to establish a professional career in managing nonprofit organizations.

Under her leadership, an innovative health and wellness center was established for older adults in Concord. It currently serves more than 2,000 newly retired and “seasoned” adults. She was recently engaged and moved to North Carolina where she is planning her wedding for 2017.

Alison Egan ’98 participated in the IRONMAN Chattanooga challenge in September of this year.

The contest includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 116-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run.

She completed the event with a time of 15 hours, 55 minutes, and 57 seconds.

2000’s

Deborah McLaughlin ’02G, an executive coach, consultant, and author, spoke at the New Hampshire High Tech Council’s July TechWomen Power Breakfast, offering advice and suggestions for effective networking strategies. Deborah coaches women as they transition to senior leadership positions.

Heather Long ’04 was appointed to Lamprey Health Care’s Board of Directors.

She serves as the Clinical Director of Nursing, Director of Surgical Services and Endoscopy at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua.

William Lonergan ’04G began a new chapter in his career as principal at Campbell High School in Litchfield this past summer. He was the associate dean of students at Pinkerton Academy prior to accepting his new position.

John Williams ’05G released his eighth poetry collection, Disinheritance, in September through Loyola University Press.

He has won several awards for his poetry, most recently the Confrontation 2016 Poetry Prize, and he was the winner of the American Literary Review Poetry Award in 2015.

Holly Matthews Medeiros ’06 is enjoying her new career as a Toddler Teacher at Growing Room of Berlin in Berlin, Massachusetts.

Patricia Stone ’06G was named principal of the Freedom Elementary School in Salem, New Hampshire. She has worked since 1999 as an administrator for the Salem School District.

Jason Lonergan’ 07G was named interim assistant principal at his alma mater, Laconia High School. He had served as the assistant principal at Pennichuck Middle School in Nashua for the previous four years.

Lance Bisson ’09 was named Rivier’s Head Coach for men’s basketball after serving as the Interim Head Coach since December.

He had been an Assistant Basketball Coach since the beginning of the 2012-2013 season. As a student at Rivier, he scored 1,233 points over four seasons and won the Jim Domoracki Award in 2009. He was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

If you could do or be anything in life, what would it be?

Being a mother has been the most educational and rewarding experience of my life … if I hadn’t been blessed with so many other opportunities, I would be content with motherhood.

How did you begin your career?

As an undergraduate, I had a passion for service to others but opted for a degree in computer science. I graduated in 1985 and worked as a software engineer for 10 years, followed by 15 years as a stay-at-home mother raising four outstanding children and volunteering at St. Kathryn Parish in Hudson. Since then, I’ve worked in advertising sales and substance misuse rehabilitation.

What attracted you to the Master of Public Health (MPH) online program?

While interviewing at Rivier for the nursing program I was asked if I ever considered a degree in public health. The director of the MPH program explained to me how my diverse background would be a great asset to the public health community. I was concerned that I did not have a clinical background, but she assured me that my software and sales skills would be just as valuable, which I have found to be true.

After being out of the classroom for 30 years, was it a difficult choice to pursue an online degree?

I was initially intimidated by online learning, but it was a very smooth transition because of the organization and support offered by Rivier and the instructors. In many ways, online learning offers more, not less. Instructors, technical support, advisors, other students, and extensive learning materials and tools are all just a click away.

What kind of interactions do you have in a virtual classroom?

Developing relationships with other students has been easy because we share a common interest and want to connect. The faculty has been superb regarding communication.

Responses to any of my questions have always been received in less than 24 hours. I have easily kept in contact with my professors through online office hours, discussion boards, email, and, in some cases, by text.

How has Rivier’s mission of transforming hearts and minds to serve the world been part of your experience?

I have been inspired to be myself by my instructors and have been shown over and over again that what I have to offer is unique to me and of great value. I have not only learned extensively about public health, but I have also learned more about myself than I ever expected I would.

What does the future hold for you?

I am just finishing my practicum at the Division of Public Health in Nashua. I am thrilled to finally be realizing my passion so many years later by taking part in the new and innovative online MPH program at Riv. The program has given me a whole new exciting chapter in my life to look forward to!

Sr. Madeleine of Jesus Society ($5,000 or more) Named for Rivier’s foundress and first president, this society represents the University’s highest level of giving.

Sr. Sylvia Trottier Society ($1,000 to $2,499) This society bears the name of Sister Sylvia, a presence at Rivier for more than 50 years. She served as professor, chair of the chemistry department, athletics director, house mother, and in countless other roles.

Sr. Joseph Landry Society ($500 to $999) This society recognizes Sr. Joseph, who led Rivier’s education department for more than 30 years. She taught at Rivier and the St. Joseph School of Nursing and had a powerful influence on education throughout the region.
