Margaret Johnson edges Andrew Harvey in Carleton-Victoria to help Tories win majority BY JIM DUMVILLE

P

rogressive Conservative candidate Margaret Johnson narrowly defeated Liberal incumbent Andrew Harvey in the Carleton-Victoria riding Monday, Sept 14, to deliver one of the Tory gains lifting the sitting government under Premier Blaine Higgs from minority to majority status. Johnson won the riding by a margin of just under 400 voters with 45 per cent support to Harvey’s 40 per cent, reversing the 2018 results, which saw Harvey edge Johnson by just under 300 votes. As they headed into

election day, Johnson said, the numbers seemed to lean in her favour. “I felt really good going in,” she said, “but then I felt really good going into the last election, too.” Meanwhile, Harvey acknowledged hitting election day with concern. “I could sense it the last three days,” he said. Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Harvey said, “people wanted to keep the same government.” The Higgs government’s aborted plan six months earlier to close

the ER department at the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Perth-Andover didn’t appear to hurt the Progressive Conservative candidate. In February, the government announced the closures of six rural hospital emergency rooms, including Perth-Andover. Facing severe backlash, including from within the Tory caucus, Higgs reversed the decision within days. On the campaign trail, Johnson and Higgs promised Carleton-Victoria voters See BLUE on page 2

The Tories, under Blaine Higgs, swept the Carleton ridings on Election night, with Bill Hogan and Richard Ames holding PC seats in Carleton and Carleton-York respectively, while Margaret Johnson unseated Liberal incumbent Andrew Harvey in Carleton-Victoria. RUNNER TAKES PART IN HIS 40th TERRY FOX RUN GARY EATMON RAN IN HONOUR OF HIS HERO AND LATE SISTER

By JIM DUMVILLE

F

or the past 40 years, Gary Eatmon has hit the trail in September to participate in the Terry Fox Run. He was back on the NB Trail between Riverside Court and the Woodstock Farm Market on Sept. 20 to mark the event’s 40th anniversary. Even if COVID-19 restrictions don’t allow a typical run, Eatmon set his plans to run anyway to pay homage to a hero and raise funds in the ongoing battle against cancer. “He’s an icon. He’s a hero,” said Eatmon when he met with the River Val-

ley Sun on Saturday, Sept. 12 behind the Riverside Court, which has been the starting point for the Terry Fox Run in recent years. While Woodstock isn’t hosting a run this year because of coronavirus restrictions, several communities, including Bath, will host virtual runs on Sept. 20. Participants run on their own and post it to the site. Eatmon did his 10 kilometres this year for the 40th straight year. The competitive runner started participating in the annual event in Saint John and continued the See TERRY FOX on pg. 2
