SMOKE AND NOISE

Centreville’s Truck and Tractor Pull returns with large crowds and a new star BY THERESA BLACKBURN

A

record number of fans showed up for Centreville’s Truck and Tractor Pull at the Western Valley Multiplex in Centreville on the Labour Day long weekend. “Our turnout was much larger this year than two years ago, which set a record at that time,” explained event co-organizer Garth Seely. Seely is a business owner, Centreville’s Deputy Mayor, and President of the Florenceville-Bristol & District Chamber of Commerce. He and Centreville businessman Byron McGrath organized the event. “Our best guess is we

had approximately 7,800 people through the gate both nights. Some would have had weekend passes. We are still working to determine exact numbers.” Seely said pullers from as far away as Newcastle, Ontario took part, with at least one spectator travelling for 13 hours to watch. “We had a lady by the name of Jenn Gadioma comment on our Facebook page that (she) drove 13 hours from Thunder Bay, Ontario to watch the pulls. I can only assume they were there to watch as there is no mention of them being pullers, and I didn’t

recognize the name from our pullers,” Seely added. This year’s event wasn’t the first time a pull was held at the new site, but Seely said it was the first time many saw the completed complex. “We were very pleased to be able to show off our facility, which wasn’t completely finished during our 2019 pulls,” Seely said. “Our facility really impressed a lot of people. I think everyone was ready to have a normal event after a year and a half of restrictions.” See SMOKE pg. 2

Navigating the halls of justice

Marilyn Perley advocates for Indigenous people in court

We’ve moved!

BY JUDY COLE-UNDERHILL

M

arilyn Perley uses her years of training and experience as a former probation officer to carve out a new role as an Indigenous Court Support Officer at Woodstock First Nation. Her work began in January 2020 with a fiveyear contract. Within that time, she plans to educate and inform the First Nation community about the judicial system while advocating and supporting Indigenous people who find themselves before the

courts. “A lot of people in the community have this fear about the judicial system and police,” Perley said. “They feel intimidated and don’t fully understand the charges or the process. I go the extra mile to take away that fear, to help and inform and keep things on track.” Like other communities in the river valley, Woodstock First Nation deals with the impact of drug-related crime.
