Horizon’s Labour and Birth flip-flop causes undue stress URVH unit reopened after public outcry

pper River Valley residents reacted quickly with shock and anger when word suddenly emerged Friday evening, Nov. 5, that Horizon Health Network planned to immediately and permanently close the Upper River Valley Hospital’s labour and birth unit.

The collected anxiety eased somewhat, 22 hours later, with word Horizon flip-flopped on the stunning decision personally delivered to URVH staff by Horizon’s interim president and CEO John Dornan during his late Friday afternoon

visit to the Watervillebased hospital.

While relieved, questions and concerns remain.

Although the unit was temporarily closed because of staff shortages surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, everyone, including the government’s local MLAs, appeared blindsided by the news of permanent closure.

The confusing mixed messages continued over the weekend into Tuesday, Nov. 9. Late Friday evening, Horizon issued a release — only after River Valley Sun re-

ported the news and the backlash began — confirming the permanent closure. On Saturday, it updated the release stating the labour and birth unit would reopen in the “coming weeks.”

On Tuesday, following Dorman’s Monday afternoon Zoom meeting with URVH staff, Horizon issued a third release announcing the unit’s reopening on Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 a.m.

Through all the turmoil, neither Dornan nor any Horizon official was available for comment.

Tuesday’s press release offered an apology but no explanation.

he Woodstock Duty Free Shop owner at the Woodstock-Houlton border crossing says the border is opened to leisure travellers in name only.

“As long as the Canadian federal government requires the PCR test for travellers, the border is effectively closed for most on both sides,” said John Slipp, President of Atlantic Travel Centres Duty Free Shop.

apologize for any confusion the announcement to close the Labour and Birth service may have caused,” it stated. “We remain committed to maintaining this service in the Upper River Valley area.”

The reaction came quick Friday evening and early Saturday after the River Valley Sun broke the news on its Facebook site. With more than 60,000 views and 1,000 shares, the news spread quickly, and the response was angry and determined.

Within hours, outraged opponents formed groups with plans to protest the decision in front of the legislature in Fredericton on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

Area residents, municipal leaders and others attacked the decision immediately. Most questioned the rationale of closing a well-run and acclaimed labour and birth unit to force expectant mothers to travel to Fredericton’s Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. For some, the trip to Fredericton would exceed two hours, one way.

Devastated following Friday’s visit from Dorman, URVH staff felt a massive sense of relief after Monday’s Zoom meeting.

That’s before providing proof of this PCR test within 72 hours of arrival at the entry, he added.

“That’s a lot,” Slipp said. “It creates conditions where the average short-term traveller won’t travel.”

Travellers could face

The mood was much different for Boyle and her colleagues following Friday’s crushing closure announcement.

“We went into the meeting hoping to reopen our unit on Monday,” Boyle told the River Valley Sun after Friday’s visit

by Dorman. “We were blindsided.”

The URVH OB physicians reacted quickly to the decision, writing a letter to Dornan and Health Minister Dorothy Shephard tearing apart the interim CEO’s reasoning to back his decision.

“We are writing to express our grave concerns about the misinformation that was presented by our CEO, Dr. Dornan, with regards to the obstetrical program at the Upper River Valley Hospital,” they wrote.

They explained Dornan didn’t recognize the difference between rural and urban care.

They disagreed with Dornan’s contention that URVH did not meet the required “standard of care” without an obstetrician or neonatologist on staff.

The doctors explained URVH meets “well-established” standards commonly used in rural hospitals across Canada, listing more than 50 such hospitals.

Boyle told the River Valley Sun that staffing is not an issue at URVH. “We just recruited two more doctors in obstetrics, who started in October, and we have two more possible recruits for next year. We have more

than enough doctors to work our program,” she said.

The URVH staff and Upper River Valley residents were not the only ones blindsided by Friday’s announced closure.

By Saturday afternoon, both MLAs in the region released statements saying they were unaware of the planned closure and adding hints about the upcoming reversal by Horizon.

“Like many of you, it was a surprise, and I was upset by the announcement regarding the URVH yesterday. I’m pleased to see that Horizon found a way forward in keeping labour and delivery at our hospital,” Carleton MLA Bill Hogan said in a release early Saturday afternoon.

Soon after, CarletonVictoria MLA and Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Margaret Johnson delivered a similar message.

“Folks, as I mentioned before, I was shocked and dismayed when I heard about the changes at Horizon regarding Labour and Delivery services at URVH,” she wrote.

“I am pleased to see that further consideration has Horizon finding a new way forward to keep L & D at our hospital.”

By Tuesday, Nov. 9, as Horizon Health announced the units Nov. 15 reopening, it remained unclear who, if anyone, in government knew about Horizon’s decision.

Neither Premier Blaine Higgs nor Minister Shephard acknowledges previous knowledge of Dorman’s announcement.

That appears surpris-

ing, considering Shephard is on the verge of releasing the government’s health-reform plan. Last week, the minister announced the release date for the comprehensive report as Nov. 17.

Opposition pressed both the health minister and premier on whether someone jumped the gun and announced part of the upcoming plan early.

Both denied the URVH obstetrics closure was in the plan.

Despite Horizon’s reversal, local mayors see the weekend debacle as a warning of potential loss of service at URVH, Woodstock Mayor Art Slipp called Friday’s announcement “a major betrayal” of commitments made when the URVH opened in 2008.

“When you read Friday’s release, there is no way to interpret that the service wasn’t permanently closed on Friday,” he said. “We’re pleased to see the reversal, but it doesn’t make the problem go away.”

Slipp said the province committed to the region that the new modern URVH would be the centre of excellence in rural health care.

At the Tuesday, Nov. 9 meeting, council members passed a motion authorizing the mayor to speak for them and the town as he pushes the government and Horizon to deliver on those initial promises.

Slipp said that it is “imperative” that Horizon meets with the Upper River Valley mayors in the future before considering any downgrades to URVH services.

Slipp said many peo-

ple tell him they didn’t receive the results within 72 hours of taking the test, rendering it useless for travel purposes.

Greg Anderson, a former Woodstock resident, now living and working in Northern Maine, agrees.

In September, Anderson last took a PCR test when renewing his work visa, and his employer covered it.

With the holidays approaching, Anderson expressed concern.

“I don’t want to pay for a test, for a 48-hour or

less whirlwind trip. I’d like to be able to enjoy the holidays with my brothers, my mother, and the rest of my family without looking at the clock constantly. I struggle to see how that’s going to happen with this testing requirement.”

Slipp, who had to close his business for more than a year because of COVID, said he hoped to take advantage during his usually busiest month.

“Getting rid of that PCR test requirement would be a huge Christmas present for us,” said Slipp.

CUPE and province remain at impasse as strike continues Pensions becoming the defining issue

housands of New Brunswick public sector workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees remain off the job more than two weeks after hitting the picket lines on Oct. 29.

While the province used its COVID emergency order to force health-care workers back to work, New Brunswick schools remain closed as bus drivers, custodians, and educational assistants walk the picket lines.

Striking CUPE locals represent approximately 20,000 unionized government workers. In addition to school and health-care staff, other striking workers include NBCC college staff, court stenographers, jail guards and others.

CUPE has a court date on Monday, Nov. 15, to challenge the government’s back-to-work order for health-care workers.

The government and union negotiators remain away from the table as the impasse drags on.

The two sides appeared close to an agreement on Nov. 5 when officials

from both sides met for a marathon meeting.

Premier Blaine Higgs expressed shock that the union didn’t agree to the offer at the time. New Brunswick Union of Public Employees president said union negotiators offered a counteroffer, but Higgs didn’t respond.

Reports say the most recent offer from the union seeks a wage increase of two per cent per year, plus an additional 25 cents per hour per year for the first three years and 50 cents per hour for the fourth and fifth years.

The province’s most recent offer includes the same two per cent increase each year, plus an increase of 25 cents per hour in each of the five years. There is also a demand that some locals concede to pension changes.

While the sides appear within reach on wage demands, the pension issue presents a massive stumbling block.

the Higgs government allowed the pension to become seriously underfunded, now want to wash their hands of the matter at the workers’ expense.

ment is willing to agree on wage demands while leaving the pension issue to actuaries to report on the sustainability of the pensions. He added they also offered pension plans to two locals cur-

rently without them.

Circuit breaker, vaccination rules cause few problems

Business owners say travel restrictions meant more shopped locally

pper River Valley businesses saw different circuit-breaker impacts over the weeks where travel and gettogethers were limited.

Convenience and small grocery stores are seeing a slight uptick in customers, while restaurants and sit-down dining took a hit before the circuit-breaker ended.

At Meg’s Country Convenience in Glassville, owner Meg McIntosh says it’s been a good fall, and they haven’t had any pushback from customers on vaccination or masking requirements.

“I’ve heard of some businesses having some issues that way but not here; everyone seems to understand it’s what we have to do,” she said.

Over at A.C. Sharkey’s Pub & Grill in Florenceville-Bristol, su-

pervisor Marion Owens was unequivocal in her assessment of the effects of the circuit breaker on business.

“It stinks,” she said.

“It’s been really hard on us; we’ll be happy to see that end.”

Owens said folks are honouring mask and vaccination requirements and understanding.

“It has nothing to with us. One fellow on the phone said, ‘Oh, I guess you don’t want our business,’ and I said, it has nothing to do with that; we can’t afford any of the fines!”

Owens said the restaurant served a few sport hunters, and toward the end of the circuit breaker, noticed more business - a trend she hopes continues.

“But right now, you can feel it, as you go around, that some businesses are quieter than they might otherwise be.”

Glenn Canam owns Glenn’s Grocery in Florenceville-Bristol. He says his business noticed a decline in the last week of the circuit breaker but isn’t sure it was directly related to the pandemic.

“Our debit machine went down on Monday, and when the replacement came on Tuesday, that was no good, and it was Wednesday around 2 p.m. before we got one working. We lost about half our sales on Monday and Tuesday because of our debit machine fiasco. Nobody carries cash anymore.”

He also said most of his customers are mindful of current COVID-19 protocols.

“Folks are conscientious about wearing a mask when they come in; they’ll be the odd one that comes in and realizes. But they scoot right back to their vehicle to grab it; we haven’t had

a single issue with folks that way,” said Canam.

While the circuit breaker was meant to prevent local travel in the hopes of stemming further COVID-19 cases, Canam believes it also

quashed some retail dollars from heading out of the community.

“I think it opened eyes to things available locally and how we can compete when you factor in the gas for a drive to

Nackawic, off-road-vehicle groups talk access to town streets Proposed bylaw would provide riders access to Otis Drive

ackawic council hosted a public meeting Tuesday, Nov. 2, taking the next step towards introducing a proposed bylaw covering limited off-road-vehicle access to a few town streets and roadways.

Mayor Ian Kitchen, who could not attend Tuesday’s meeting due to other commitments, said the meeting sought public and business views on giving ATV and quad drivers access to Otis Drive.

Bob Stokes, a director of QuadNB, joined area ATV club representatives and others at the Nov. 2 meeting in Nackawic, calling it a “good meeting.”

He said the town hosted the public meeting to review and present the information the town was recommending,” Stokes said.

Kitchen explained

that the town reached an agreement with the local ATV club four or five years ago to provide riders limited access to Routes 105 and 605 to reach gas stations and restaurants.

The mayor said the groups later reached out to the town requesting access to Otis Drive, giving them a route to the Hawkshaw bridge road, which would connect them to off-road trails on the south side of the river.

Kitchen said he believes securing approval from the town to use Otis Drive, which rejoins Route 105, just north of the Hawkshaw bridge, is the first step towards off-road clubs getting provincial government approval to use the bridge.

While the groups already have limited access to Route 105 to reach the Nackawic gas station lo-

cated there, Stokes said using Otis Drive instead of travelling Route 105 to the Hawkshaw bridge provides a better option for both off-road travellers and Nackawic.

“Otis Drive is the safest route to avoid Nackawic Mill trucks, and this route supports their waterfront development and other businesses in their downtown area,” Stokes said. *If the town approves the use of Otis Drive and has a bylaw in place, Stokes doesn’t expect difficulty in securing provincial approval.

He said QuadNB would do the paperwork needed to gain the necessary approval from DTI, Justice and Public Safety for continued access on Route 105, plus the bridge.

“We do not feel this will be an issue as we have

already done some preliminary checks,” Stokes said. “This will all come as a package with their proposed bylaw wording, and once approved by QuadNB, it is then submitted to the government departments.”

The town’s proposed bylaw lays out rules and restrictions surrounding the off-road-vehicles use of town streets, including the requirement the machines must be registered and insured.

During the discussion of the proposed bylaw during Nackawic’s Nov. 2 council session, some noted the ongoing problem over the past few years of bike and ATV riders illegally using town streets and becoming a nuisance for town residents.

said Stokes, but added this type of problem dates back generations.

Stokes said riders illegally travelling town streets are often youth who are not part of any off-road club nor pay for trail passes.

“When one looks at the demographics of the owners and the legal members of Quad NB, their age is mostly in the 55-plus range,” he said.

Stokes said Nackawic joins 32 other New Bruns-

wick communities providing access to town streets to promote tourism and an economic benefit to their respective community.

He said Premier Blaine Higgs committed “to develop a tourism strategy that will connect, complete and improve the existing managed trail system, to provide safe and enjoyable trails that will attract enthusiasts from far and wide for this fast-growing safe family outdoor sport.”

Woodstock council still weighing off-road-vehicle options Access to streets and trails being viewed separately

he slow journey to finalize a pilot project allowing off-road vehicles access to Woodstock streets and to make a final decision about allowing non-winter motorized traffic on the Trans Canada Trail took a partial step forward at the Oct. 21 council in committee session at the AYR Motor Centre After a lengthy discussion about the issue, council appears destined to separate the street and trail issues before making any further decisions or recommendations.

During her report to council, Woodstock Tourism Director Tobi Pirie — a member of the off-roadvehicle ad-hoc committee with Director of Planning Andrew Garnett and Woodstock Police Chief Gary Forward — discovered council members reluctant to move forward on both issues.

Speaking on behalf of the ad-hoc committee, Pirie outlined the committee’s question-and-answer draft submission, which clarifies

frequently asked questions regarding the town’s pilot project to provide off-road vehicles limited access to town streets.

The town would publicly release the document, with council’s approval, to describe the purpose and methods of the pilot project to go into effect from April 18-to-June 19 of next year. The committee’s submission for approval also outlines plans for the Trans Canada Trail, particularly the portion which runs along the St. John River from the Woodstock Farm Market to the washed-out train bridge in Upper Woodstock.

Coun. Trina Jones questioned whether council approved the trail portion of the staff’s publication plans.

“I think we have to strip the two apart,” she said.

While she agreed to the Q and A portion dealing with the pilot project surrounding street use, Jones said the council has not decided on future trail use.

She explained council is currently considering leasing the Trans Canada Trail

through Woodstock from the provincial Department of Natural Resources but needs time to confirm the details of such an agreement.

“What are our costs and responsibilities going to be if we take over the lease,” she asked.

While not a member of the ad-hoc committee, Woodstock Director of Recreation and Community Services and AYR Motor Centre manager Kelly Foster-Hallett asked to address council on the issue.

Foster-Hallett said town staff need to understand council’s vision before they can effectively move forward with the issues regarding future use of the trails.

“We can only chase our tails for so long,” she said.

Foster-Hallett asked council members what direction they wanted to go.

“Come up with a plan,” she said. “We can go in any direction council wants to go.”

Coun. Norm Brown said he knows what he wants

to see as far as the TransCanada Trail is concerned.

“I want to see a dual purpose trail,” he said.

Brown, other councillors and staff discussed the possibility of creating sideby-side trails, one for pedestrians and cyclists and the other for motorized traffic, between the Farm Market and Riverside Court.

Deputy Mayor Amy Anderson said a similar trail system works in Campbellton.

Brown suggested, and most council members agreed, having town staff review setbacks and easements on the property along the trails to determine if parallel tracks are feasible.

Mayor Art Slipp suggested council officially address the issue at a future regular council session, noting the Q&A document involving the street-use pilot project appears set to go. In the meantime, he said, the town could look at the trail easement to see if enough land is available to create a dual trail.

While most council members appeared supportive of the pilot project involving street use, Coun.

Randy Leonard, as he has often in the past, expressed strong opposition to off-road vehicles on the streets.

“I’m not really in favour of four-wheelers on the streets,” he said. “I do not want them on Connell Street, not on any street.”

Later, during the discussion of the trail, Leonard again asked fellow council members to consider the type of use for which ATVs and Quads are designed.

“I want you to remember they’re off-road vehicles,” he said. “They’re designed

to run off-road.”

Chief Forward reminded council why it created the ad-hoc committee, noting the police were responding to numerous complaints about off-road vehicles on town streets.

He said the public safety issues involved in those complaints remain.

“Taking your time to make the right decision is the right decision,” he said.

The police chief said no decision would eliminate all public safety issues, noting people who drive illegally on the streets would also drive illegally on the trials.

“What we need are rules for law-abiding citizens,’ he said.

Woodstock mayor recommends tax rate remains unchanged Reduced grant, increased operating demands offset 6.8 per cent gain in tax base

rom Mayor Art Slipp’s perspective, Woodstock residents can expect neither an increase nor a decrease in their tax rate in the 2022 budget.

During a council in committee meeting, Nov. 2 to discuss budget issues, the mayor reminded council the substantial increase in the town’s tax base won’t deliver as considerable a financial boost as it might appear.

“We’re in a very, very tight spot even though it appears we have significant additional revenue,” Slipp explained.

Figures issued by the province last month show the town’s growth and increased property value delivered a 6.76 per cent jump in the town’s tax base from just under $518 million to $553 million.

Slipp said two items

would erode the additional tax revenue delivered by the larger warrant. First, he explained, the town saw a significant drop in its municipal grant. Secondly, he added, council and staff must contend with substantial demands to adequately fund Woodstock’s operating budget.

Acting CEO Andrew Garnett, who led the discussion with directors and department heads during the Nov. 2 meeting, said the town lost about $171,000 in grant funding.

Slipp told council the increase in assessment values, combined with the decrease in grants, should produce a net gain of approximately $345,000.

He said that’s not a major gain concerning the financial demands on the town.

Slipp said preliminary budget demands already exceeded the town’s net gain.

“So we’re in a very tight space,” he said.

“There is no question that we’re again, at this point, with no money, probably, or surplus for capital.”

Slipp said the town made an exception last year to its ongoing efforts to pay as they go by borrowing $700,000 for capital costs.

“Those loans are going to have to be repaid,” he said. “So we’re going to have a significant increase in our principal and our interest payments in 2022.”

Slipp said staff and council would review operation budgets closely to find savings, but he expects money to be tight even before looking at capital expenditures.

Hartland council cuts property tax, increases water, sewer fees ‘Conservative’ budget includes town improvements, funds for Central Carleton Complex

he Town of Hartland passed their 2022 budget at a council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 9.

For the third consecutive year, councillors voted to lower the property tax rate for town residents and businesses.

Last year’s rate of $1.51 per $100 of assessment dropped to $1.4995.

The town will increase the cost of water

and wastewater services from $595 to $625 per year.

Hartland CAO Rob Webber said despite the water and sewer increase, the rate remains lower than several other municipalities around the province, including Bath, Perth-Andover, and Woodstock (based on 2020 rates).

Webber called the budget “conservative,” noting that the final numbers include reserve funds for capital invest-

ments, including library improvements, town beautification, park development, and fees for starting work on the new Central Carleton Community Complex.

Earlier in the meeting, the CAO reported that Pearson Engineering would be tasked with getting initial estimates for the complex.

He noted the bill for this portion of the prject will likely cost between $5,000 and $8,000.

A revenue increase of approximately $200,000 allowed the town to leave property rates at the 2021 rate of $1.2899 per $100 assessed value.

Mayor Curtis outlined that the recommended 2022 General Budget has an increase of $214,095 mainly due to

the rise in the tax base of $15,491,400, which increases the revenue to $199,824.

“We’ve done an extremely good job of balancing the budget,” Mayor Curtis explained, adding it has been the goal of him and the council to find ways to increase the tax base instead of increasing tax rates.

The new Amsterdam Inn, the construction of an expansion for the Northern Carleton Civic Centre, and a proposed new three-building apartment complex are the most

notable additions to the ever-growing community.

Council also approved a General Operating Fund budget of $3,685,257.

The town also maintained the current sewer and water rates for the coming year.

Councillor Andy Saunders questioned if the budget had room for unexpected expenses or possible overages like wage increases.

Youth apologize At the October meeting, three letters were read from area youth who participated in the RCMP Extrajudicial Sanctions program, which holds children accountable for their actions at a community level.

In each letter, the youth apologized for any disturbance caused to nearby businesses and residents due to their reckless dirt bike driving. It stated that each would be donating money to a local charity.

As well letters of apology were sent to the businesses affected.

A few days later, Education Minister Dominic Cardy announced all student learning would be moved online until the strike was over. Victoria Hutt knows the coming weeks are going to be rough. Hutt has three of her four children learning from home in Riverbank, near Florenceville-Bristol.

Hutt isn’t happy the Government of New Brunswick is making her take on the roles of education assistant, tech support, counsellor and referee for her kids while she attempts to work from home.

Parent Log: Day #1

Learning at home

It’s 10:15 am. I have JUST NOW had my first break from my newly mandated role as the Government of New Brunswick’s (GNB) home-school teacher’s as-

sistant and student tech support.

I checked into work for GNB at 8 am.

I helped my 11 year-old-son navigate MS Teams, log in, and find his meeting.

My husband did the same with our 13-year-old daughter on my work computer.

I calmed my tearful son while he tried to keep up, following his teacher to find where the files were.

His teacher was very patient, but many students had significant difficulty. I helped him learn how to print the file instead of copying down the questions from the screen.

My husband fixed the subsequent paper jam.

My 16-year-old son tried to troubleshoot on his own why the internet wasn’t connecting to his spot at the kitchen table. At this point, he also needed his laptop charger back. We share one charge cord between two laptops because one stopped working.

We’re hoping the newer computer will charge quickly enough for our younger son to be able to log back on for his next class, or we’ll try to scrape together some version of attending class on one of our phones.

All of this is happening while my husband and I are supposed to be at our own jobs. Neither my husband nor I have begun our paid work yet today. He has a client waiting on him for a furnace install.

I have yet to open or reply to any of my emails. Many of those likely have important, time-sensitive questions about a

recent proposal request I just released for the organization I work for.

So let’s recap the resources and privileges required to connect to their classes this morning - and living in rural New Brunswick, I use the term ‘connect’ loosely: – Three computers in our home. Technically, we need four if I would like to even hope to pretend to do my actual job.

– Tech support of two parents - We literally did not stop, and I have an alarm set for 10 minutes from now to make sure they notice their alarms set and have no difficulties signing in to their online classes.

– A printer, paper, and ink - hopefully functioning.

– Reliable Internet. Today was magically a good Internet day at our house; many days aren’t in rural New Brunswick.

– One understanding and supportive boss (you could take notes, Premier Higgs). My husband is self-employed.

Unfortunately, that also means if he’s not working, he doesn’t get paid. We both have clients waiting on us.

What’s lacking - lots: – We do not have enough headphones with microphones that work. My daughter is at my work desk and computer where I’m supposed to be working.

– One of the laptops we do have does not work well. And one son is on the couch in a less than ideal setup for writing. That’s so our children could be spread out, hear their teachers, and not interrupt each other.

– Dyslexia and ADHD are also part

of our household, adding additional challenges.

I’ve added ordering another laptop charger to my growing to-do list.

Oh, and my son found a tick on the cat during his first class, so there was that lovely addition to the morning.

Who’s filling in for me while I fill in for GNB? Moms aren’t here to clean up behind you, Mr. Higgs.

Your words say you need us working for the economy, but your actions clearly say you think our role is in the home.

I’d tell you more, but my 10-minute break is up.

I’ll send our hourly invoice shortly, Mr. Premier.

But, before I head back to the homeschooling trenches, I need you, Mr. Higgs, to understand that parents don’t appreciate you believing online learning is a great backup plan. I can see how you think - using what you see as my “free labour” is a great business model - FOR YOU. Not negotiating fair pay and using parents as scab workers reeks of classism and a privileged viewpoint. As I head back to the kitchen table, I think it’s time for you to get back to the negotiating one.

New Brunswickers must help protect our health system

N

ew Brunswick has entered yet another extremely challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, one that is deeply concerning to physicians across the province.

The surge of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and tragic deaths have put a strain on our already precarious health system. Many of our hospitals are stretched well beyond capacity.

Dozens of health-care workers have been forced into isolation due to possible exposure. Elective surgeries and ambulatory care clinics are once again being cancelled. This is not sustainable.

At a recent virtual meeting of physicians from every corner of the province, anecdotes were shared about the immense challenges health-care professionals are facing to simply maintain the health system in its current form. The strain is being felt by physicians, other health-care providers, and patients across New Brunswick.

As I write this, 50 people are hospitalized due to the virus, 23 in an intensive care unit. Our health system does not have the human resources or hospital space to take on this surge of patients without drastically reducing services elsewhere.

I am a gastroenterologist in Fredericton. In recent weeks, I have had to cancel endoscopies for patients due to nurses being redeployed because of the surge in COVID-19 patients. I have been asked to make myself available to work in our intensive care unit if necessary; that means more cancelled cases, more reduced office vis-

its, and more patients not getting the care they need. As a physician, I am prepared to help patients in any ward where my training and skills can be put to use. However, I worry for the New Brunswickers whose care will continue to be delayed as a consequence of an overloaded health system.

We are also concerned that children under 12, not yet eligible for vaccination, are at greater risk of the pandemic due to the more contagious Delta variant. Schools all over the province are now routinely closing as a result of this fourth wave.

It is for these reasons that the New Brunswick Medical Society supports the provincial government’s announcement of “circuit breakers” in the areas hit hardest by COVID-19 in recent weeks and the decision to ask all New Brunswickers to limit their contacts to their household over Thanksgiving weekend. This is a difficult, draining step for us all. However, physicians strongly believe that these are necessary steps to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to prevent further strain on our health system. We have a responsibility to protect the population, especially our unvaccinated children and immunocompromised New Brunswickers.

We need only to look to Alberta and Saskatchewan to understand the devastating effects the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic can have on our health system and ultimately our population if we do not act quickly and decisively.

On behalf of physicians across

New Brunswick, I am asking all New Brunswickers to continue to do their part to curb the spread of this virus. I understand this is a significant request at a time when you are tired, frustrated, sad, and quite likely angry at our current situation. All of those feelings are completely understandable. Your health-care providers are feeling the exact same emotions. If we work together, we can get through this difficult phase as we have previous challenges.

Finally, a word on vaccination. Of the 50 COVID-19 patients currently in a New Brunswick hospital, 41 are unvaccinated, two are partially vaccinated, and seven are fully vaccinated.

For several weeks, unvaccinated patients have been hospitalized at far greater numbers than those partially or fully vaccinated, adding to the mountains of evidence from around the world demonstrating the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines. They are our greatest tool to combat the spread of the virus, and they are safe. More than six billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered globally, over 56 million in Canada alone. Their efficacy and safety are well established.

When combined with masking in public spaces, good hygiene, and other Public Health measures, they can dramatically slow the spread of the virus.

We strongly urge all eligible New Brunswickers who have not yet been vaccinated to get the vaccine. It is the safest, most effective way to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. If you have not yet been vaccinated and you have concerns

about getting the shot, please speak to your primary health-care provider or a pharmacist about your concerns.

Location will allow organization to offer more services to meet local needs

A

new vision for the Valley Food Bank in Woodstock is taking shape as operations moved to the former Global Textiles building at 162 Houlton Street earlier this month.

“We’ve been looking for the last 10 years for a suitable place,” said Sandra Ketch, president of the board of directors for Volunteer Family Services Inc. “We looked at the new location and saw the potential for us there.”

Valley Food Bank has been operating in the town for the past 25 years. The non-profit organization provides food to 500 clients per month and supports a breakfast program for 1,700 children from Nackawic to River de Chute within the Anglophone West School District. Families and individuals in need also frequent the food bank for clothing and household items.

In addition, the food bank offers an outreach program that works in partnership with community groups to distribute food boxes to another 80-100 clients at designated locations up and down the river valley each month. This service supports people who may not have transportation to the food bank in Woodstock.

As services have grown, so has the demand for space at the rented building on Upper Main Street. Meanwhile, spring flooding along the St. John River often

causes concerns in the storage area. When a local benefactor recently offered to help secure a new location, Ketch said the board leaped to purchase and renovate the building on Houlton Road.

Valley Food Bank moved into the new 14,000 square foot location the first week of November.

Valley Food Bank has three full-time and one part-time staff and 12 to 15 volunteers who help with sorting clothing, stocking shelves and preparing food boxes. More volunteers are always needed, Grant said. A turkey drive will be held on Nov. 15, and there will soon be Christmas boxes to pack.

Grant said the food bank is forever grateful for regular donations from the community and corporate donors such as Walmart, Sobeys and Superstore. However, some staples and perishable items must still be purchased to top off what is needed to feed a family.

Gift cards are always welcome to help out with that cost, she said.

The move to the Global Textiles building offers the food bank a chance to diversify its services and be open for evening hours. It will mean better parking and more visibility, accessibility, and convenience for clients. Food distribution and clothing will have their own separate sections and, to help offset overall costs, some

clothing will be available for sale to the public later in the new year.

There are also plans to help “empower” clients with budgeting, cooking, and food preparation courses, lessons in gardening and canning vegetables, and support with literacy, banking and income tax. Another priority is to offer clients more privacy for picking up their food boxes.

Grant said she wants to “get rid of the stigma” of going to the food bank.

With the high cost of groceries today, food security can become an issue for many people, especially low-income families and seniors. She would like to install a “thank you wall” at the new building for donors who support the food bank’s mission in serving the community.

“It’s about giving and sharing and being welcome in a new open environment,” Grant said of the new location. “My end goal is to have a soup kitchen within two or three years. We have a lot of hungry people who would like to have a nice hot lunch or a single mother who would like a place to bring their kids.”

Safe Home study comes to town, Christmas craft fairs happening

By Julie Stone Safe Homes Study Horizon Health is conducting a study in Nackawic on Smart Homes Through Technology as part of the Connected Communities: Smart Home Education Series.

The study consists of a series of two-hour classes over six weeks. The target participants are seniors 55 and older interested in learning about smart home technologies.

The purpose of the study is to explore if educating seniors about smart home technologies can improve independence,

technology use, perceptions of safety and comfort and reduces isolation and reliance on caregivers.

Participants are given face-to-face information and instructions on using technologies and then spend 1 hour of the time actually working with the different smart devices.

At the end of each session, participants fill out a questionnaire on their experiences of the day and what, if any, of the devices they think they would use in their daily lives. They are also provided with information on where to buy devices and an approximate price for each.

WFN marks National Aboriginal Veterans Day

Moving ceremony at community cenotaph Nov. 8 honours WW1, WW2, Vietnam vets

T

he blue sky and the bright morning sun shining on the mirror-still waters of the Wostastoq/St. John River stood in stark contrast to the clouds of war and chaos Woodstock First Nation veterans faced as they fought next to allies in two World Wars and Vietnam.

On Monday morning, Nov 8, Woodstock First Nation residents, elders and veterans welcomed members of the Woodstock Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11, Woodstock ANAVETs Unit 95, Woodstock Police Force officers and others to share in the tribute.

“Welcome to our fourth annual National Aboriginal Veterans Day ceremony to honour our WFN veterans and to remember all those who served and contributed to our military’s history,” said Bonnie Polchies, a member of the committee organizing the Woodstock First Nation service at the community’s riverside cenotaph.

She also recognized the ongoing contributions of those currently serving in the military.

“We’re all here to honour our Woodstock First Nation veterans, our heroes, and remember their achievements, their courage, their dedication, and to say thank you for your service.

Following a smudging ceremony, the Colour Party from the Woodstock Legion and ANAVETS, with guest Woodstock First Nation veteran Roberta Paul, marched to the cenotaph behind piper Brandon Gardner.

The moving ceremony combined First Nation and Remembrance Day traditions. Following Bonne Polchies’ welcome, drummer Tosha Lyons sang the Honour Song, asking community members to join her.

Chief Tim Paul thanked everyone for attending.

“Thank you for not only our aboriginal veterans but for all veterans who sacrificed many things for our freedoms that we have today, all of us,” he said. “For that, I thank you all.”

Paul also thanked the organizing committee for preparing the service each year.

“They do a great job,” he said.

Paul closed with a reminder of the importance of acknowledging history.

“There can be no dedication to Canada’s future without acknowledgment of its past,” he said. “And that’s in all things.”

Following the reciting of the traditional Act of Remembrance by Amanda McIntosh, Gardner delivered Piper’s Lament.

Committee member Shawn Sappier read out the names of Woodstock First Nation veterans who served during the First and Second World Wars and in Vietnam.

First World War veterans included Solomon Tomer, Stephen Tomer and James Sappier, who also served in the Second World War. Other Second War veterans were Alfred Deveau, Archie Deveau, who perished in the war, Charles Polchies, Gabriel Joseph Polchies, John Polchies, Joseph Polchies, Oliver J. Polchies, Roy Polchies, Donald P. Sacobie, Sr., Edward Sacobie, James Sacobie, Ambrose Sappier and Martin Paul Sappier.

Vietnam veterans were Valentino J. Polchies, Roger Polchies, Marshall Sappier and Gary Paul.

Somerville family, pets escape early-morning blaze Neighbour’s frantic pounding alerts couple and two children garage was on fire

hanks to the swift action of neighbours, a family of four and their two dogs safely escaped an early morning blaze, Monday, Oct. 25, which significantly damaged a Somerville home overlooking the St. John River across from Hartland.

Homeowner Ryan McCully said the pounding on their door just after 4:30 a.m. awakened him and his wife, Marissa.

At first, confused by the pounding, he opened a window to ask what was happening. Maureen MacLean, his neighbour from across the street, told him his attached garage was on fire.

McCully and his family and two dogs exited the building to see smoke and flames rising from the garage at the south end of the house.

Hartland Fire Chief Mike Walton said neighbours called 911 at 4:28 a.m. to report the fire at 29 Craig Street.

He said the first firefighters arrived on the scene to find the garage destroyed and the house’s attic fully engulfed.

The Hartland fire crews fought the blaze with mutual aid from Woodstock and Florenceville-Bristol to provide tanker support.

He said the McCully family and their dogs were safely out of the building when firefighters arrived.

Although safely out, McCully and Walton said the family’s friendly German shepherd, Joey, unknowingly re-entered the burning building. McCully said he noticed Joey missing but assumed the frightened pet ran away from the fire. When a firefighter told him he saw a dog in the house, he re-

alized Joey had returned inside.

McCully said he entered the house through the recently completed entrance at the north end of the building and escorted Joey to safety.

McCully, a wood-carving artist, used the garage as his workshop. He described it as his comfort place, where he went to work and to relax.

He said the fire destroyed his saws, woodworking tools, and several completed art pieces, including a few already sold.

Stan Graham, McCully’s neighbour to the south and closest to the burning garage, said his wife woke him, telling him the McCully house was on fire.

Graham said when he looked over, all he could see was flames. He rushed over to the house, thankfully finding the McCullys safely out of the building.

Graham described the McCully family as “wonderful neighbours.”

“Ryan’s a great guy, who is always willing to help,” he said.

Graham said the heat from the blaze was intense, noting he would have to check to see if it caused damage to the siding on his house.

Chief Walton said the fire destroyed the garage and attic and caused significant smoke and water damage to the main part of the house. He said it’s unclear if the house is salvageable.

Speaking on site of the fire late Monday, Walton said he called in the RCMP and the Fire Marshal’s Office to help determine a cause. He said it

started in the garage, but they have yet to determine if it ignited inside or outside the building.

Walton said the house is reasonably new, built only a little over a decade ago, and recently underwent significant renovations.

He said the fire investigators are using a dog to comb through the debris, adding the fire remains under investigation.

McCully said he had already contacted his insurance provider, but he doubts they could save the house.

As he and Joey stood overlooking the damaged home and charred remains of his garage and workshop, McCully was saddened by the loss but thankful his family and pets were safe.

“It’s a good thing our neighbours woke us up,” he said.

anta Claus is coming to town – or in this case, a village.

The Centreville Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Centreville have decided to host the 2021 Santa Claus Parade.

After such a long period of uncertainty and having to cancel the event last year, we are hopeful that things will continue in a positive direction and that we will be able to host an eve-

ning parade at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021.

This year’s theme is “Light up the Christmas Spirit.”

The Centreville Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Centreville encourage all businesses, schools, groups, and organizations in the Carleton North area to support the event and bring your Christmas Spirit to Centreville.

Businessman pitches cannabis nursery to council

Woodstock offers preliminary support for Cultivarium’s Health Canada application

oodstock council gave preliminary approval for an entrepreneur to begin the long process of establishing a cannabis nursery and seed business within town limits.

At the Tuesday, Oct. 26, regular council session, councillors agreed Director of Development and Planning Andrew Garnett should provide businessman Scott Clark with a letter of support to pursue his vision to establish a cannabis nursery called Cultivarium.

Following Clark’s presentation to council at the Oct. 19 council in committee session at AYR Motor Centre, Garnett provided council members with a proposed letter of support at the Oct.26 meeting.

“Woodstock council supports in principle your plans for Cultivarium as per your presentation on Oct. 19, 2021,” the letter signed

by Garnett read. “Once you are ready to proceed, please let us know, and we will start the application process, which could be subject to conditions.”

Garnett said the letter provides Clark with the opportunity to begin the extensive process, including federal approval via Health Canada, a search for a suitable property to establish the business, and a zoning and approval process through the Woodstock Planning Action Committee and council.

During his presentation to council the previous

Tuesday, Clark — a cultivation manager at Solargram Farms, with five years experience with Health Canada-approved facilities — said outlining his vision to the town is an early step in a long process.

He said the entire process, which could take between six and 18 months, cannot begin without the town’s approval.

Clark explained his long-term goals are to gain Woodstock approval for a cannabis nursery; create a facility abiding

by Health Canada rules and regulations; form a retail outlet to sell the plants and seeds; and partner with NBCC Woodstock to host a Cannabis Cultivation Technician program.

Clark said the first step is to inform investors, which includes himself, they have the town’s tentative approval.

He said funding the proposed venture involves “three private investors, personal finances and appropriate loans.

To complete its vision, Clark said, Cultivarium investors must find a suitable location and building — whether a new building or retrofitted existing structure to meet Health Canada standards — to establish the operation.

He said the Woodstock Industrial Park appears to be the most likely site for the operation.

Clark described the type of business to council, ex-

plaining it differs from large cannabis production operations. Cultivarium will sell plants and seeds, noting he’s already talking with Organigram, a prominent cannabis producer for which he used to work, about a sales agreement.

He said the business would also have a retail market, adding Cannabis NB’s decision to skip Woodstock for one of their retail locations played into his decision to establish his operation in the town.

As a nursery growing small clones and seedlings, Clark said Cultivarium’s customer base would be larger growing and production operations, as well as the homegrown market.

Clark said Cultivarium doesn’t need cooling towers, nor would the nursery produce an odour.

He said the seed production doesn’t require a lot of space to make it productive.

“I don’t need a lot of plants to get a lot of seeds,” Clark said.

From Woodstock’s economic perspective, the businessman said Cultivarium would generate between five and 10 nursery and retail jobs, create work for local construction companies and tradespeople, and provide medical and recreational growers with a reputable and legal source to obtain plants.

Clark said his efforts to approach NBCC about establishing — and if they agree, instructing — a Can-

nabis Cultivation Technician program would provide a viable trade for local students or bring more students to the community.

During the Oct. 26 council session, Coun. Jeff Bradbury suggested Clark should host a public meeting before the town gives final approval to Cultivarium’s plans.

Garnett said Clark would need to come before council and the planning advisory committee before moving forward with his plans.

He said town approvals would be like any zoning process, including public meetings for residents to speak in support or against the business.

could also impose conditions for the business owners to meet before approving it.

Nackawic names newest street to newest development after former Lt. Gov. Graydon Nicholas

N

ackawic’s newest street bears the name of New Brunswick’s first and only Indigenous Lieutenant-Governor, Graydon Nicholas.

Nicholas Lane runs from Otis Drive between two buildings housing Atlantic Garden Homes to the housing complex’s parking lot.

Fittingly, Nicholas Lane offers a panoramic view of the St. John River, or the Wolostoq, its original Indigenous name.

“What a beautiful spot,” said Nicholas, before he and Mayor Ian Kitchen unveiled the street name during a brief ceremony Thursday afternoon, Oct. 14.

Pointing towards the river’s edge, Nicholas noted his ancestors would probably have encampments at this point as the river was a vital route for the Maliseet to travel up and down the Upper River Valley.

While he never lived in Nackawic, Nicholas said he has great memories tied to the area.

“I’ve always loved this community. You have a beautiful spot here along this beautiful river,” he said.

“Thank you for this honour, and it really is an honour.”

After speaking to the small crowd gathered onsite, Nicholas, who served as a lawyer, judge and university professor before accepting the role as Lieutenant-Governor, said the seeds of his later success were planted more than 70 years earlier near Nackawic.

While taking his older

sister to Fredericton by bus in the 1940s, Nicholas said his mother stopped at the Moonlight Inn in Dumfries, just south of Nackawic.

While they were there, he said, a busload of young people stopped. Nicholas said his mother asked where they were heading.

They told her they were all college students.

At that moment, his mother recognized the importance of education.

Nicholas said, at that time, children could not go beyond Grade 8 on the reserve.

“After that, my oldest brother was sent away to go to school,” he said. “That started a trend in our family for higher education.”

While his brother became an engineer, Nicholas studied law.

“It’s a connection here for me, a spiritual connection,” he said. “Also, an historical and family connection.”

Mayor Kitchen said the timing proved ideal to name its newest street Nicholas Lane. He said the town not only has a tradition of naming streets after New Brunswick Lieutenant-Governors, but the location and the recent inaugural Day of Truth and Recognition made it an ideal time to recognize Nicholas.

Kitchen thanked the former Lieutenant-Governor for attending Thursday’s brief ceremony, which he said the town held to mark two special occasions.

In addition to unveiling the street name, the mayor explained, the event cel-

ebrated the official opening of Atlantic Garden Homes, which recently saw people move into its first four units, with another 12 units opening soon.

Atlantic Gordon Homes president Gordon Wheatan shared in the festivities, thanking Nicholas and his wife Beth for attending and praising those who pioneered the project.

“Thank you for allowing us to honour you,” Wheaton said to the former Lieutenant-Governor and his wife.

He also directed comments to Peter Corbyn, the project manager, who served as emcee for Friday’s event, and Councillor Gail Farnsworth, who proved a significant force in getting the project off the ground.

Wheaton said they and others introduced him to the importance of affordable housing and agefriendly housing.

He also expressed appreciation to Colt Structures Ltd., the Nackawic manufacturer which designs and fabricates wooden wall panels. Atlantic Garden Homes is a division of Colt Structures.

Wheaton also directed attention to Atlantic Garden Home resident Dianne Schriver, one of those who recently moved into their new home. She was the first person to pick out a unit.

most two years ago.

She said the Nackawic Lions Club meeting took place at the beginning of COVID-19, limiting capacity to only 40 people at a time.

Schriver attended the morning meeting. When she saw the design and conceptual drawing of the housing complex, she knew then where she wanted to live.

“All I could fixate on was the one on the corner,” she said.

Schriver said she ate lunch with her daughters, told them she wanted to move into the planned complex and headed back to the Lions Club. She sat on the steps outside, waiting for the second meeting to end.

When everyone left,

Schriver went in and found Wheaton.

“I want one of your Garden Homes,” she told him, “I even know which one I want.”

Schriver, a life-long resident of the Nackawic area, said her new home overlooking the St. John River, Nackawic’s expanding waterfront, parks, playgrounds, the famous Big Axe, and soon-to-be-finished marina is ideal.

Despite its rural feel and panoramic view, she explained, it sits in the heart of the town. It’s a five-minute walk to the Nackawic Mall, grocery store, pharmacy, banks and seven minutes to the library.

From her front window, she can see the waterfront, the arena, the parks and the boats coming and go-

ing on the river.

“I love watching the fishing tournaments,” Schriver said.

She said she spends a lot of time on the waterfront, either reading, having coffee or sitting and relaxing.

She said she takes photos for people who want to bring home a souvenir of their visit to the Big Axe. Schriver said the units in her building are full, and she knows her neighbours.

The other structure is near completion, and another building behind the first two is in the plans.

She said Nackawic has plenty to offer people of all ages, from retirees to young couples with children.

“There’s a lot of people moving to Nackawic,” she said.

Lions, students honour local vets with banners and stories Grade 7 and 8 students in Bath share information on veterans displayed on village’s banners

or the first time, 14 banners will line the streets in Bath, honouring 15 local veterans from the community who served in the Canadian military.

Plus, through the unique participation of students from the village’s school, the public will have easy access to additional information about each veteran online.

The Bath Lions Club, which funded and organized the banner program, consulted Florenceville-Bristol, Perth-Andover and Plaster Rock legions to secure a banner design and permission to use the legion logo.

Lion Gerald Sullivan said the Bath Lions Club formed a small committee to design the banner, take applications, gather information on the veterans and produce the banners.

He said fellow Lion Mike Nixon, a 36-year veteran of the Canadian Army, took applications and assisted families, gathering information on their family member’s service.

“The family provided

the photos and paid for the cost of each banner,” said Sullivan. “These banners will be used yearly until wear and tear warrants new ones.”

Sullivan said Bath village council agreed to assist with purchasing the pole brackets, promotion and installation of the banners.

In conjunction with the banner program, Bath Middle School teacher Katie Saunders’ Grade 7 and 8 students interviewed veterans or family members to compile information on the 15 veterans honoured on the 14 banners. The veterans’ profiles, written by the students, will be shared online.

When scanned, QR codes placed near each banner will direct the user to the information about that veteran compiled by the Bath Community School students.

Saunders said the idea for her students’ involvement, including the QR codes, came from an interview she heard on the CBC in June with a Fred-

ericton high school music teacher who had students compose a piece of music to go along with pieces of art around music.

“The students posted QR codes next to the art so the public could listen as they enjoyed the artwork. When I heard from Lion Gerald Sullivan this summer that the Lions Club would be hanging banners recognizing our local veterans, I knew then that this was an initiative I wanted my Grade 7 and 8 students involved with,” said Saunders.

She said she spoke to Sullivan and Nixon, who supported her students taking on this project.

They provided her with a sneak peek of the banners and contact information for each veteran or family member.

“Our goal was to shine a light on these important members of our community and find a way to educate members of the community more about each one,” said Saunders.

become engaged in their community.

“This goal was realized through the positive feedback I have received from those who have read the profiles the students have done,” Saunders said.

“Second, I wanted them to have a greater understanding of the role of veterans in our community.”

The project also provid-

ed students with a chance to discover their own hidden talents.

I wanted my students to experience cross-curricular learning opportunities that allowed each to find strengths they may not have realized they had,” said Saunders.

Sullivan said anyone interested in purchasing a banner for the fall of 2022

could contact Mike Nixon of the Bath Lions Club. He said the club would place orders for new banners in the spring.

“The Bath Lions Club feels this is a good start to the veterans banner program and feels the number of banners raised will rapidly grow each year once the banners are publicly viewed,” Sullivan said.

Hartland raising banners in tribute to area veterans Displays in town businesses, other locations now pay tribute to 50 local heroes

anners paying tribute to Hartland-area heroes took a prominent place in Hartland businesses beginning on Monday, Nov. 1.

Gloria Foster and her small team displayed Remembrance Day banners honouring 50 area veterans in businesses throughout downtown Hartland and up the hill at businesses and offices around the ValuFoods location for the fifth straight year.

Foster said each year the program, which started in 2017, adds new banners.

“We have 10 new ones this year,” said Foster, as she, her husband Michael and Bev and John Fortin sorted the banners at the Hartland Legion Monday morning before delivering them around town.

Foster said the families of the 10 newest veterans included in the banner program could request a specific location.

Otherwise, she added, they strive to put different banners at different sites each year.

Foster said she reached out to the business owners or management, asking permission to display their banners.

She said businesses are always happy to participate, although she tries to stick to the high-traffic areas of town.

Foster said if the banner project keeps growing, they may have to reach out to businesses in the industrial park and elsewhere.

She said the banners remained on display through Veterans Week until after Nov. 11.

A roundup of cases processed through Woodstock Provincial Court

By Judy Cole-Underhill Maxwell, killing 24-year-old Charged with breaching emergency order Wendy Lynn Kirkland, 48, of Woodstock will appear for trial in provincial court on July 4 at 9:30 a.m.

She was charged with resisting arrest and failing to comply with a mandatory order under the Emergency Measures Act following an altercation with Woodstock Police outside the Hart Store on Connell Road on Nov. 30, 2020.

The court heard the incident was filmed on video.

The charge alleges that while in a public indoor space, the accused did “without lawful excuse fail to wear a face-covering over the mouth and nose except when eating or drinking” as mandated by the province during the COVID-19 pandemic. On Oct. 26, Kirkland’s legal counsel told the court his client had filed a complaint with the New Brunswick Police Commission against the two officers involved, alleging they assaulted her during the incident. The court will also hear an application under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on June 13. A pre-trial conference was scheduled for April 6.

Belyea sentencing adjourned to Nov. 30 Wyatt Mark Belyea, 25, of Woodstock, will be sentenced in provincial court on Nov. 30 at 1:30 p.m. following the death of a Woodstock woman last spring in Maxwell. He pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death and breach of a court order, and has been in custody since his arrest. On Oct. 27, he also pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon at a court appearance by video.

Victim impact statements were ordered before his sentencing on all charges.

On Nov. 5, Crown Prosecutor Bronwyn Mooney asked Judge Brian C. McLean to reschedule the Nov. 8 sentencing date. The crown was still waiting for one victim impact statement to be submitted. RCMP charged Belyea after a fatal accident on May 27 on Route 540 in

Abigail McArthur.

Glassville man to stand trial Jesse Banford Bulmer, 41, of Glassville, has been committed to stand trial at the Court of Queen’s Bench following a preliminary hearing on two charges laid by RCMP. On Oct. 25, Judge Henrik Tonning ruled there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. A date for Bulmer’s trial before the judge alone has not yet been set. Bulmer was charged with impaired driving causing death and failing to immediately comply with a breathalyzer demand concerning an off-road vehicle accident on Oct. 26, 2020, near Glassville that claimed the life of a local man.

Evidence given during the preliminary hearing was placed under a publication ban until after the trial.

Woman remanded on fraud charges Jenny Lee Markey, 37, of no fixed address, will appear in provincial court in custody by video for plea on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m.

She appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Nov. 8 and was denied bail

by Judge Brian C. McLean, following a bail hearing three days earlier. She remains in custody. Markey was arrested on a warrant in Fredericton on Nov. 3 on several outstanding charges laid by Woodstock Police and RCMP. Markey was charged with two counts of fraud, two counts of possession of a forged document, possession of stolen property, and breach of probation, stemming from incidents in 2019 and 2020 in Woodstock.

Richmond Corner woman to enter plea Laura Boehler, 63, of Richmond Corner, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. to enter pleas on four charges laid by RCMP. She made her last court appearance on Oct. 26.

Boehler was charged with criminal harassment, two counts of committing mischief and breach of an undertaking concerning incidents between June 28

and Sept. 13 and July 3 and Aug. 30 at Richmond Corner. The charges allege the accused did not follow an order to stay away from her neighbours, and that she did beset or watch their dwelling house without lawful authority and willfully interfered with their property’s legal use, enjoyment, and operation.

Bloomfield Ridge man to stand trial for shooting incident Mackenzie Moir, 21, of Bloomfield Ridge, will appear for trial in provincial court on March 17-18, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. concerning a shooting incident involving police. He appeared in court in custody on Nov. 8 and pleaded not guilty on all charges. He remains in custody. Moir is charged with discharging a firearm at a police officer, possessing stolen property (a 2015 Toyota Tacoma), and obstructing police in relation to incidents near the Tobique First Nation and Arthurette on June 11.

A bail hearing was held on Aug. 25, and he was remanded.

Canterbury man charged with sexual assault Robert English, 71, of Canterbury will appear in provincial court on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. to answer a sex charge laid by RCMP. English is charged with sexually assaulting a male victim in connection with an incident on July 29 in Benton. He made his first appearance in provincial court before Judge Brian C. McLean on Nov. 2. The matter was set over to allow the accused time to secure legal counsel.

Facing theft charges following police bust Isaak Tedford Thomas, 25, of Florenceville-Bristol, will appear in provincial court for plea on Nov. 30 at 9:30 a.m. to answer a possession of stolen property charge. He was arrested following a police bust in East Centreville on Sept. 9.

He first appeared in court in custody shortly after his arrest and was released with strict conditions. On Nov. 2, Thomas appeared before Judge Brian C. McLean, and the matter was set

over to allow the accused to secure legal counsel.

Perth-Andover man facing sex charge George A. Michaud, 77, of Perth-Andover, will appear in provincial court for plea on Nov. 30 at 9:30 a.m. on one sex charge laid by RCMP. Michaud is charged with sexual assault concerning a June 24 incident at Perth-Andover.

He appeared in provincial court before Judge Brian C. McLean on Nov. 2, and the matter was set over to allow the accused more time to obtain legal counsel.

Awaiting sentencing Geoffrey Adam Cudmore, 42, of Perth-Andover, will appear in provincial court for sentencing on Dec. 9 at 1:30 a.m. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 8 to a series of charges laid

by RCMP. Cudmore has been in custody since August after waiving his right to a bail hearing. He appeared in court via video.

Cudmore was charged with two counts of assault and one count of assault with a weapon involving a female victim, stemming from an incident on Feb. 21 at Perth-Andover. He also faces charges of impersonation and obstructing a police officer on July 10 and breach of an undertaking for an incident on April 3. On Oct. 19, he pleaded guilty to more charges, including two counts of assault on a female victim, mischief causing property damage to a vehicle, uttering threats, two counts of possession of stolen property and theft of a licence plate, stemming from incidents in Perth Andover and Red Rapids in October and November 2020.

The court heard Cudmore had been living in a stolen camper trailer in a junkyard and was also found in possession of a stolen Dodge half-ton.

Tracey Mills man facing drug charges Corey Chase, 27, of Tracey Mills, will appear in provincial court for plea on Nov. 23 at 9:30 a.m. on drug charges laid by RCMP. Chase is charged with possessing methamphetamine and importing

methamphetamine into Canada in connection with an incident at Royalton on Jan. 9, 2020. He made his first appearance in provincial court on Sept. 14 and then failed to appear on Oct. 12. An arrest warrant was issued. Chase was taken into custody on Oct. 18 and released with conditions. At his court appearance on Oct. 9, Judge Brian C. McLean told the accused the charges were serious, and he must obtain legal counsel before his next court date.

Sex charges laid against Woodstock man Christopher Sullivan, 45, of Woodstock, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on several sex-related charges laid by RCMP. He made his first court appearance on Oct. 19.

Sullivan is charged with six counts of sexual assault in connection with a series of incidents alleged to have taken place between 2010 and 2017 in Somerville.

Charged with assault Hilton Fredericks, 24, of Woodstock will appear in provincial court on Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. to answer an assault charge laid by RCMP. He is charged with assaulting a female victim concerning an incident between Jan. 1 and Feb. 24 in Maxwell. On Nov. 9, Fredericks’ legal counsel appeared in court on his behalf and requested more time to prepare his client for plea.

Canterbury man awaiting verdict on charges Tyler Owen Johnson, 22, of Canterbury, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m. for a verdict on his trial for sexual assault. The charge stems from an alleged incident in Canterbury several years ago. On Nov. 25, he will also be sentenced on two other charges laid by Woodstock Police. He appeared in court in custody by video for his trial on assault charges on Nov. 9 and changed his plea to guilty. Woodstock Police arrested Johnson following a serious assault on another man that allegedly took place near the Woodstock

Golf Club on Sept. 8.

He was charged with indictable aggravated assault and breach of probation in relation to the incident. Johnson appeared in court in custody by video on Sept. 20 and was denied bail. He remains in custody.

Arrest warrant issued for Woodstock man An arrest warrant was issued for Timothy John Lenehan, 40, of Woodstock, after failing to appear in provincial court on Nov. 9 to answer two new charges laid by RCMP. Lenehan was charged with assault and dangerous driving concerning a June 30 incident in Canterbury.

He will also appear in provincial court for sentencing on another set of charges on Jan. 4, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. He pleaded guilty during an earlier court appearance in October. Lenehan was charged by RCMP with assaulting a man, committing mischief, causing property damage, and taking a vehicle without consent concerning an incident on June 20, 2020, at North Lake.

Sentenced to jail for impaired driving James Earle Dow, 45, of Jacksonville, was sentenced Nov. 2 to a total of eight months in provincial jail on three counts of impaired driving. He will also serve 12 months of probation and is prohibited from driving for four years upon his release. Dow was arrested and taken into custody for contempt of court on Oct. 21. Judge Brian C. McLean remanded Dow into custody at provincial jail because he showed up intoxicated for his court appearance. He was charged with three counts of impaired driving by Woodstock Police and RCMP for incidents in Woodstock on Oct. 18, 2020, and on Oct. 5, 2019.

Dow changed his plea to guilty on all charges.

London appeared in court by video three days later and waived his right to a bail hearing. He pleaded guilty to the charges laid against him by Woodstock Police.

London was charged with failing to stop for police, resisting arrest and breach of probation, stemming from a Woodstock incident on June 1, 2020. The crown withdrew another charge of breach of probation.

London was arrested on a warrant after failing to appear for his trial on Sept.

24, 2021. The court heard the accused resisted arrest during an incident on Main Street in Woodstock and drove off in his vehicle after police deployed a taser.

He shut the vehicle door and led them on a chase through town.

Facing charges of assault, threats, confinement Robert Dale McMann, 44, of Woodstock, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 23 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on three charges laid

by Woodstock Police. He appeared in court on Nov. 9, but the matter was set over to allow the accused more time to secure legal counsel. McMann was charged with unlawful confinement, uttering threats and assaulting a female victim by choking, strangling and suffocating her during a Sept. 9 incident in Woodstock. He appeared in court in custody by video on Sept. 10, following his arrest the day before. He was released with strict conditions and ordered him to have no contact with the alleged victim. He was also prohibited from possession of any weapons or firearms.

Perth-Andover woman to be sentenced for fraud Leah McAllister, 34, of Perth-Andover will appear in provincial court for sentencing on Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. She appeared in court in custody by video on Nov. 9 and changed her plea to guilty to one fraud charge laid by RCMP. Since August, she has been in custody when she was denied bail after being arrested on a warrant. McAllister was charged by RCMP with fraud, stemming from an incident in Perth-Andover

on July 9, 2020, when a debit card was stolen from another woman. The crown withdrew another charge of possession of stolen property.

Woodstock man facing eight charges Randall Austin Christie, 28, of Woodstock, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 23 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on eight charges laid

by Woodstock Police. He made his last court appearance on Nov. 9. Christie is charged with two counts of uttering threats, five counts of assault, and one count of sexual assault in connection with incidents involving a female victim between Jan. 1 and May 26 in Woodstock.

Trial dates set for theft and drug charges Jonathon Daniel Stockford, 34, of no fixed address, will appear in provincial court for trial next February on 13 charges laid by Woodstock Police.

He appeared in court custody by video on Oct. 27 and pleaded not guilty on all counts. Trial dates were set for Feb. 4, 2022, at 1:30 p.m., and Feb. 14 and Feb. 28, 2022, at 9:30 a.m.

Stockford waived his right to a bail hearing and has been in custody at provincial jail since August. He is charged with two counts of possession of methamphetamine, four counts of possession of stolen property (a utility trailer, various tools and tires); two counts of possession of instruments for the purpose of break and enter, two counts of breaching a court order and driving while suspended in connection with incidents between May 5 and Aug. 10 in Woodstock.

On Sept. 13, Stockford faced two new charges laid by Woodstock Police and RCMP. Police charged him with driving while suspended and possessing an identity document for a firearm that was not his, stemming from an Aug. 10 incident in Woodstock. He also pleaded not guilty to these offences.

Arrest warrant issued for Johnville woman An arrest warrant was issued for Jayde Lee Alice Boyd, 28, of Johnville, for breaching a release order to appear in court on Oct. 28. RCMP charges Boyd with drug trafficking in methamphetamine, two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm (a loaded shotgun and

.22 rifle), two counts of unsafe storage of a gun, and breach of a release order concerning an incident that occurred on Sept.

23, 2020, at Johnville. On Sept. 29, Boyd appeared in provincial court in custody after another warrant was issued for her arrest for failing to make her court appearance the same morning. She was taken into custody after turning herself in at the Woodstock courthouse three hours late for court. She pleaded not guilty and was released on orders to appear in court to set a trial date. Judge Cameron Gunn warned Boyd not to be late for her next court appearance, or she would return to jail.

Local man sent to detox Samuel Robert Crewe, 26, of Woodstock, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 29 and pleaded not guilty to two charges laid by Woodstock Police. A trial date was set for May 12 at 9:30 a.m. on all charges.

In the meantime, Judge Brian C. McLean granted his request for a variation in his house arrest to enter the Ridgewood detox centre in Saint John for at least one month. Crewe is charged with defrauding TD Bank and possessing a fraudulent cheque concerning a March 31 incident in Woodstock. On Sept. 22, he appeared in provincial court and pleaded not guilty to 11 other charges laid by RCMP and Woodstock Police. Crewe was charged with assault on a female victim, dangerous driving, and driving while suspended in connection with an incident in Woodstock on Feb. 20.

RCMP charged him with two counts of assault on a female victim, assault with a weapon (a golf club), uttering threats, and taking a motor vehicle without consent following an incident in Benton on June 21. Crewe is also charged with possession of stolen property and two counts of breaching an undertaking concerning incidents on June 30 in Waterville and on July 14 in Woodstock.

Johnville man to be sentenced on 13 charges Cole Smith, 27, of Johnville appeared in provincial court in custody on Oct. 8 and entered guilty pleas to a series of charges laid

by RCMP. He was remanded back into custody at provincial jail until his sentencing on Nov. 18 at

Smith pleaded guilty to obstruction, assaulting a police officer, taking a baton from a police officer during the execution of his duty, and committing mischief causing damage to a police vehicle in connection with an altercation with police in Johnville on May 30. Three other charges possession of an unlicensed firearm, a sawed-off shotgun, and two counts of breach of a court order were withdrawn by the crown. Smith was also charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle while suspended and failure to remain at the scene of a collision following an early morning traffic incident in Bath on Feb. 18. A police vehicle was struck in the incident but no injuries were reported. He pleaded guilty to these offences and guilty to uttering threats for another incident on Feb. 19.

Smith also pleaded guilty to assault and breach of a release order for a March 8 incident in Bath; guilty to damaging a van, property of the sheriff’s office, on June 23; and guilty to flight from police, dangerous driving and driving while suspended during an incident on Sept. 2, 2020 in Bath.

Wilmot man facing drug charges Paul Dean Hamilton, 66, of Wilmot, will appear in provincial court on Dec. 23 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on three drug trafficking charges laid by RCMP. He made his last court appearance on Oct. 25. Hamilton is charged with two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking in methamphetamine and cocaine, unlawful possession of cannabis for the purpose of selling it, and unauthorized possession of a firearm in connection with a Jan. 29 incident at Wilmot.

Trial set for accused in federal prison Dylan Ross Dixon, 29, of Lower Woodstock will appear for trial in provincial court on Dec. 23 at 9:30 a.m. on charges laid

by RCMP. He appeared in court in custody by video on Oct. 25 and pleaded not guilty on all counts.

The court heard Dixon is currently serving time in federal prison and was scheduled for release in January 2022. Dixon was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and driving while suspended in connection with an incident in Beechwood.

break and entering a dwelling house, committing mischief, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and driving while suspended concerning another incident in Newburg. Both incidents allegedly occurred on Aug. 13 while Dixon was on parole.

Denied bail in case of loaded handgun Chance Leslie, 28, of Middle Hainesville, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 2 for the court to decide on his release.

Judge Brian C. McLean denied him bail. Leslie returns to court by video for plea on Nov. 23 at 1:30 p.m. He faces 14 charges laid by RCMP following a single-vehicle crash in Florenceville-Bristol on Aug. 2 when police seized a loaded handgun. Leslie is charged with possession of a firearm while prohibited from having it, possession of a prohibited device (a prohibited magazine), possession of a loaded, prohibited firearm (a Glock nine-millimetre pistol), concealing a prohibited weapon and prohibited ammunition, unsafe storage of a firearm, carrying a Glock nine-millimetre pistol with the serial number altered, defaced or removed, possession of a prohibited weapon without a licence or registration certificate, possession of a prohibited device without a licence, possession of a firearm

dangerous to the public peace, obstruction, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, theft of a motor vehicle (a 2006 Toyota Corolla), and possession of stolen property.

Trial date to be set for Victoria County man Wesley Geneau, 40, of Anfield, Victoria County, will go to trial on Jan. 26, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. and remains in custody. He appeared in provincial court in custody Oct. 27 and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Geneau was found fit to stand trial in September, but remained in custody for a further 30-day mental health assessment. Geneau was charged by RCMP with uttering threats against another man, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, a knife, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of ammunition while prohibited from having it, following an incident on Aug. 29 at Anfield.

On Sept. 1, he appeared in court in custody by video and was remanded for a five-day mental health assessment. On Aug. 17, Geneau pleaded not guilty to two counts of uttering threats on Oct. 1, 2020 in Perth-Andover and one count of conveying a threat by social media on Aug. 9, 2020 at Plaster Rock. Both of those incidents involved female victims. Trial dates were set for Feb. 14 and March 4, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.

Somerville man sentenced to 20 months in jail Judge encourages Bon Scott Trecartin to work toward rehabilitation

n Monday, Nov. 1, Judge Natalie H. LeBlanc sentenced 31-yearold Bon Scott Trecartin of Somerville to 20 months in prison, minus time served.

On Sept 30, Trecartin pleaded guilty to 16 charges, including multiple offences of unlawful entry at a dwelling house, indictable assault, uttering threats, property damage, breach of an undertaking, and harassment, all related to a female victim. The crown dropped 12 other charges.

In passing sentence Monday, Judge Natalie LeBlanc said she considered many aggravating factors, including most of

within a domestic relationship, Trecartin telling the victim he would hurt her children, and his breaching a no-contact order with the victim, dozens of times.

Judge LeBlanc said there were also mitigating factors to consider, including Trecartin pleading guilty and preventing a trial.

“You entered guilty pleas in a relatively timely way, you’re expressing remorse, and you are expressing a desire to change. I believe in rehabilitation,” said the judge, “and I believe that anybody can make different choices at any given point in their life... so Mr. Trecartin, while I am admonishing you for the choices you made, I’m commending

you on coming forward and taking responsibility. You didn’t require the crown to put everybody through a trial, and you also didn’t require the crown to prove charges beyond all reasonable doubt; in this case, you are taking responsibility for what you’ve done, which tells me you have better chances at rehabilitation.”

The pre-sentence report noted Trecartin’s grief at the loss of his father and stepfather, which he said played a significant role in his becoming addicted to crystal meth.

In sentencing Trecartin, Judge LeBlanc didn’t prevent him from having contact with his victim. The judge addressed the woman in court, whose identity

is protected by a publication ban. She attended the hearing and told the judge that she and Trecartin still had a relationship and that he was a changed man now that he was sober.

When Judge LeBlanc asked Trecartin what he’d do differently once released, he said he’d try to avoid drugs, alcohol, and negative influences. He also said he had a job lined up in Nova Scotia after his release.

Trecartin has been in custody for 215 days, which is credited as timeand-a-half, translating into 323 days. Trecartin will serve approximately nine more months in prison.

Military enthusiast seeking support for planned museum

Jacksontown man laid concrete, hopes to complete structure deidcated to veterans

tep by step, Jacksontown military enthusiast Aaron Bouma is marching towards his dream of a military museum.

Bouma — who has been gathering war history and information, learning about military equipment and tactics since childhood — hopes to open a museum in Jacksontown as soon as possible.

He already has sev-

eral artifacts, including highly detailed handmade scaled models of military equipment, to display in the building once completed.

Over the years, Bouma presented several of his models to the Canadian Forces, including some on display at the Canadian Forces Base in Gagetown.

He also shared his knowledge of military history and equipment

at public presentations throughout the region.

Earlier this year, Bouma delivered a presentation on the Dieppe Raid at the L.P. Fisher Library in Woodstock.

This summer, Bouma laid the concrete for the museum floor on his property in Jacksontown and is preparing to start building the structure.

Bouma is looking for financial contributions to help him complete

the project dedicated to the men and women who served their nation in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean Conflict and more recent conflicts, such as Afghanistan and several peacekeeping missions.

Spotlight to shine on 11-year-old Woodstock artist Jozie Mae Kennedy is Creek Village Gallery and Café’s Young Artist of the Month

ozie Mae Kennedy, an 11-year-old Meduxnekeag Consolidated School Grade 6 student, will display her passion and talent for art in Woodstock this month.

Creek Village Gallery and Café will display Kennedy’s artwork on its Young Artist Showcase wall during November.

In the biography the young artist prepared for the Creek Village showcase, Kennedy said she lives in Woodstock with her mother, father, brother, two cats, a dog and a bunny.

She said she began taking art seriously two or three years ago but has been doing art her whole

life.

“My favourite type of art is painting with watercolour and drawing,” she said.

Kennedy said doing her artwork is relaxing, reduces stress, and “it’s super fun to do.”

She said she studied art with local instructor Nicole Manuel and at school.

“I have lots of different themes like flowers, Disney, animals, mixing colours and my friends,” she said.

Kennedy said she enjoys making art for family and friends as gifts.

While art is important to her, the 11-year-old has plenty of other activities to

keep her busy.

“My hobbies include dirt biking, camping, hanging out with my friends, cooking, watching tv, getting my nails done, walking my dog, travelling, collecting crystals, rocks and sea glass,” she said.

Kennedy looks forward to putting her artwork on display for people to see.

“I want to say thank you to Creek Village Gallery for spotlighting my art for the month of November,” she said.

Local businessman Greg MacPherson sponsors the gallery’s Young Artist Spotlight wall in the Creek Village Gallery and Café on Connell Street in downtown Woodstock.

The James Webb space telescope and lagrange points

NIGHT SKY

M

any readers will no doubt have seen the International Space Station (ISS) and SpaceX StarLink satellites moving across the night sky, transiting the sky in about 10 minutes.

These satellites orbit the Earth in Low Earth Orbits (LEOs), which take about 90 minutes to complete.

One reason SpaceX puts its StarLink satellites in LEOs (340 km high) is so that the signal transmission time from Earth to satellite and back to Earth (round trip time of 2 ms) will not introduce a significant signal lag time. If they were higher, say in a geosynchronous orbit (35,768 km high), the delay time would be 238 ms or almost 1/3 s.

The geosynchronous satellite orbital time around the Earth matches exactly the rotation speed of the Earth (23 hrs, 56 min) so that the satellite remains at a fixed point in the sky.

This is handy, but the satellite is quite a distance from the Earth. Phone conversations and internet response times would suffer badly from lag times.

As an aside, science fiction movies routinely ignore signal lag times and may show people having conversations in real-time with astronauts, say on Mars, or in other far-flung places across the galaxy, all of which would be impossible.

A major scientific event will happen on Dec. 18 (2021), when the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be launched!

It is the successor to the highly successful Hubble Space Telescope (HST), which is in a LEO, about 540 km high.

Unlike the HST, the James Webb Space Telescope will be in orbit around

the sun at a distance of about 1.5 million km from the Earth at a special point called the Lagrange point 2 (L2). Please refer to the diagram for the following discussion.

What is a Lagrange point? It is a place where a small object (under gravitational attraction) will remain at relative rest with respect to two much larger (massive) objects such as the Sun (M1) and Earth (M2).

The French mathematician and astronomer Joseph Lagrange discovered in 1772 that there are five points where this could happen.

Shown in the diagram are the gravitational equipotential lines, which you can think of as similar to elevation contours around hills and valleys. In a valley, you will stay at rest, but at a hilltop, you might roll down unless you balance yourself.

The L4 and L5 points are stable as in a valley, but the points L1, L2 and L3 are like mountain tops and

are unstable places. The JWST will be at the L2 point and will periodically have to use a small amount of rocket fuel (hydrazine) to stay in place. This will limit the JWST lifetime to about five years. The point L2 was chosen so the JWST can constantly point away from the sun yet be in constant communication with Earth.

ctober 2021 saw many of our Neighbours celebrating birthdays, enjoying delicious Thanksgiving meals and putting their creativity to good use!

Neighbours donned smocks, rolled up their sleeves and came up with the funniest and sweetest painted pumpkin people. These spirited creations were scattered throughout the Manor for all staff and Neighbours to enjoy.

Who would have thought we’d still be in a pandemic ?

W

ho would have thought a year ago this time that we would still be dealing with COVID to the degree we still are? Clearly, not me! As I look out my office window on the coolest day we have had yet, I see the leaves off the trees after the wind event on Sunday, and I’m struck by the stark reality that we have turned a corner. I’m looking at beautiful afghans on my office chair that our knitting club made to donate to a fundraiser for the ALS and thinking it might

be comforting to cuddle up in one of those for a bit; comforting to enjoy the warmth but also comforting to think about the hands that made them along with the gentle chatter and laughter in the lounge as these ladies gather to knit each week. Comfort in a COVID world can sometimes be that simple.

Every year at this time, I ask myself,” Have I got another winter in me?” I still love to go out for an early morning run but am fully aware I have to kick myself a little harder as the years go by to get out that door.

As a long-term runner, I have heard it said many times over the years by fellow runners that the most challenging step is the first one out the door.

I never bought into that too much, but I’m a slow learner when it comes to some things! I still

get scolded about going outdoors in the winter, but I need my outdoor fix of fresh air, and it is as dark in the winter at 5 or 6 a.m. as it is at 7 p.m. I think of a line from the famous song by Simon and Garfunkel, “ Sound of Silence,” which says,” Hello darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again,” because that is my time to talk and think and be present to the Lord and the beauty of His creation that surrounds me, with few distractions except the pounding of my feet. There may be many things on my mind when I leave my house, but I know it will be ok by the time I get back home. I can do this.

The residents here at MacLeod Riverside Court inspire me in the same way as my runs do on many days. When I see Alma enjoying my

music or Lise going out to walk, Violet clasping my hand when I speak to her or Muriel sitting at the piano to play, I see active seniors still engaged in life. I always love to seize the opportunity to tease Keith and Elizabeth before they leave the breakfast table in the early mornings, as well as cherish every story Shirley tells me about those adventures she has had with her daughters. Yvonne is determined enough to stay active to inspire any of us, and If music is playing, Wilhelmina is dancing! How can you not be encouraged to be the best you can be when surrounded by these seniors, many of whom I choose to call friends?

A great day: Local cancer support group accepts large donations Ribfest, Tim Hortons deliver over $40,000 to River Valley Cancer Support Group

T

he River Valley Cancer Support Group delivers compassion, support and financial help to families dealing with the pain and fear of a cancer diagnosis.

Tuesday, Nov. 2, proved a great day for the group as it accepted significant donations from a pair of longtime supporters.

The River Valley Cancer Support Group members officially accepted a $35,000 donation from the Woodstock Ribfest, following another successful event in July of this year.

The group also visited the Tim Hortons outlet on Connell Street in Woodstock to accept a $7,478 donation courtesy of the restaurant’s Smile Cookie campaign. The Connell Street staff chose the River Valley Cancer Support Group as its recipients for funds raised through the sale of the cookies.

A River Valley Support Group member, Heather Hogan, said they are fortunate to enjoy continued

support from the Ribfest organizers and Tim Hortons owners and employees, along with other generous contributors across the region.

“People in our community know about our organization and are very generous,” said Hogan.

She joined fellow cancer support group members Marilyn Rose, Doug and Sheila Graham and Vera Girvan to accept Tuesday’s generous donations.

Ian MacDougall, owner of six Tim Hortons franchises in Woodstock, Hartland, Florenceville-Bristol and Perth-Andover, and Connell Street employee Melissa Hamilton, presented the donation to the group. As part of the Tim Horton national Smile Cookie campaign, each restaurant chooses a local charity to receive funds raised by selling the $1 cookies.

Cancer Support Group, while Hartland raised funds for the Upper River Valley Hospital Foundation.

Woodstock’s Main Street outlet will contribute funds to Prime Time Pals, while Beardsley Road pledged funds to Western Valley Special Olympics.

The Perth-Andover Tim Hortons directed its Smile Cookie funds to the Southern Victoria Cancer Assistance Program.

Ribfest co-chairs Scott Dunlop, Andrew Garnett, and Jeff Bradbury officially presented the donation to the River Valley Cancer Support Group members.

The Woodstock Ribfest organizers have raised thousands of dollars for River Valley and other cancer support organizations since launching the annual Ribfest in 2016.

Over the past two years, COVID-19 restrictions forced Woodstock Ribfest organizers to scale back the large scale event to a drive-thru format, but the community continued

to support it.

In addition to presenting $35,000 for the River Valley Cancer Support Group, the 2021 Ribfest will deliver $15,000 to the John T. MacMillan Jr. Memorial Fund and $2,400 to the Living Beyond Cancer Peer Support Group.

Hogan said the success of both the Woodstock Ribfest and the Smile Cookie campaign is a testament to the community participation and generosity of so many caring people in the Upper River Valley.

She said the support group would distribute the funds to people in the River Valley diagnosed with cancer.

“When an individual or family receives a cancer diagnosis, there are so many worries,” Hogan said. “It quickly takes over your life so funds that are available from the group can help with lots of issues from gas to groceries and everything in between, but it also lets people know there is a community who cares.”

Mayor’s pink tie delivers more than fashion points

Colour N.B. Pink Day brings awareness and support in battle against breast cancer

A

nyone who had the good fortune to run into the always affable Woodstock Mayor Art Slipp on Friday, Oct. 29, may have noticed his stylish pink necktie.

The mayor’s choice of attire ran more profound than simply being a sharp-dressed man.

Slipp wore the pink tie with narrow white, blue and black stripes to make a loud statement supporting the New Brunswick Breast and Women’s Cancer Partnership’s Colour N.B. Pink campaign.

In reaction to the NBBWCP’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month province-wide efforts in October, Slipp said the town encouraged staff and Woodstock residents to wear pink on Friday, Oct. 29, to support cancer survivors.

Slipp’s wife Lynn did her part, sporting a chic pink sweater.

How many other staff members and residents joined in the campaign, which the town promoted on its website, wasn’t clear, but the mayor strongly believes in the

Colour N.B. Pink goal of reducing the risk and ravages of cancer.

Throughout October, NBBWCP members, volunteers, and supporters held a series of activities to reduce the risk of breast cancer, promote health, strengthen communities, and celebrate survivors.

In a letter addressed to Woodstock staff and council in September, NBBWCP president Claire LeBlanc outlined her group’s vision and encouraged New Brunswick communities and

residents to join the campaign in some manner.

“The NBBWCP hopes that you will see October as an opportunity to bring people together and illustrate the healing power of community,” LeBlanc wrote.

“We anticipate that those who champion this important initiative will inspire and serve as a model for others to build supportive communities for years to come, which is an invaluable contribution to New Brunswickers in and of itself.”

Helping your garden helpers

A

s we move into the colder months, we can’t forget about caring for the birds (and other critters) that stay around and bring life to our backyards (and to entertain us!).

A feeder attracts our feathered friends, but it can also attract a variety of larger animals, like raccoons, skunks, or even squirrels. Using squirrel baffles or squirrel-proof feeders can be helpful (but

they need feed in winter, too). Well-placed bird feeders are especially helpful when a bird’s natural plant food has declined through winter. After that big winter storm, your feed could make a difference.

Be proactive! Keep bird feeders topped up. Consider feeding birds most regularly during the winter months, when other food sources are scarce. Birds get their food from a variety of sources and migrate on their own schedule. Think of it as an “extra” treat or supplement.

Birds especially appreciate fatty, high-energy foods (such as suet) during cold months. Establish a feeding routine and clean feeders and birdbaths regularly to maintain good hygiene. Don’t forget to keep

fresh water available. It will freeze, but making a hole in water sources to allow bird’s access and keep water source in a sunny location to help with melting.

Late fall garden care Bark on newly planted trees isn’t tough enough to survive our winter weather.

For newly planted trees, wrap the trunks or create wind barriers (with burlap or frost protector) to protect the bark over the winter months. Be sure not to tie too tightly.

Don’t be tempted to remove snow and ice from your wintergreen shrubs and trees after the first snowfall. You may cause more damage trying to remove these elements from the plants than if they’re allowed to stay.

Never too late to clean

out all garden debris to make it difficult for any pests or diseases to overwinter in your garden. And clean up any fruit on the ground around trees.

Animal and plant safety We are getting to the time of poinsettias which are poisonous for animals.

Take care with your furry family!

Things to think about A garden journal is an excellent way to track garden successes and challenges from year to year.

This will help you plan and know what worked best when sowing seeds, when you can expect blooms, and when to harvest.

half to a third cup lard 2 cups oats 1 cup cornmeal 2 cups birdseed (like black oil sunflower) 2 cups raisins or currants Combine lard and peanut butter. Cook on medium-low until all melted together. Mix in oats, cornmeal, seeds and dried fruit. Pour into an 8 x 8-inch parchment-lined baking dish. Cool until solid. Cut into chunks 4x4 inch blocks. Wrap in parchment or wax paper.

Special Olympian ‘cleaning up’ with Woodstock police

Woodstock Police Force and Western Valley Special Olympics launch partnership

pecial Olympian Luke Bustard, who just finished cleaning the interior of the black and white Woodstock Police Force cruiser, sprayed down the dusty exterior Thursday afternoon in the garage bay behind the police station.

With the assistance of Cst. Shaun Kimball, the WPF’s liaison with the Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of the Special Olympics, Bustard helped launch the partnership between the Woodstock Police Force and Special Olympics NB - Western Valley Region. The program will see Special Olympians cleaning Woodstock police cars weekly.

Bustard said he liked washing the police cars.

Kimball said the car-washing program’s primary objective is to enhance the connection between the police force and Special Olympics.

Special Olympics Western Valley Region coordinator Debbi Graham said the program is another means for Special Olympians, such as Bustard, to get involved in the community.

“It’s a great chance for Special Olympians to get involved and work with members of the police force,” she said.

Kimball said the law enforcement organizations, including the WPF, raise mon-

ey, support and awareness for Special Olympics through the Law Enforcement Torch Run. Through that partnership with the Special Olympics movement, the LETR seeks out different activities and events for the force and Special Olympians to work together.

Kimball and Graham said COVID protocols limited activities over the past year and a half, but they hope that changes soon.

Graham said they were about to return to regularly scheduled activities at the AYR Motor Centre, but the recent introduction of COVID-19 restrictions delayed plans.

Rotary’s Haunted Drive-Thru wecomes hundreds through Tunnels of Doom

he lineup stretched along two Woodstock streets for several blocks Saturday evening, Oct. 31, as carloads of Halloween-loving families patiently bided their time for their chance to drive through the Tunnel of Doom.

They eagerly waited to be surrounded by weapon-waving zombies, chainsaw-wielding maniacs, blood-piercing screams, lines of wrecked and twisted vehicles and scenes of crazy clowns, fast-moving spiders and others terrorizing images on big screens.

The combination of good weather and good planning made the Woodstock Rotary Club’s second annual Haunted Drive-Thru a smashing success.

During the peak rush between 8 and 9 p.m. vehicles stretched along side-by-side lines through the AYR Motor Centre parking lot, to

single lines along Connell Park Road to Connell Street and along Kirkpatrick Street to Main Street.

Rotarian Hilary Stockford, who, with the help of her daughter Halle and others, handed out treat bags to the carloads as they neared the Tunnel of Dome, said she didn’t count the cars, but the number was high.

Stockford said the Rotarians prepared 1,500 treat bags, so they will have a better idea of numbers at the end of the evening, noting they handed out anywhere from two to six bags per car.

The free Rotarysponsored drive-through event began last year as the club wanted to offer families an exciting and safe way to celebrate Halloween during the COVID pandemic. The event’s design allowed the Rotarians, with help from the local Interact and Rotaract Clubs, to

deliver the treats and scares with almost no physical contact.

Stockford said the Woodstock Rotary Club funded the event with support and donations from local businesses.

She called the Haunted Drive-Thru a community event.

“It takes a village, they say, and we have a great village,” she said.

Some of the Rotarians and many volunteers who helped set up and operate Saturday’s event said the late-October weather delivered double-digit temperatures and clear skies, even into the evening, making ideal conditions for everyone.

Although Halloween Day on Sunday began with high winds and rain, Woodstock trick-or-treaters who set out door to door also enjoyed abovenormal temperatures and clear skies and the rain clouds moved on by early evening.

Honoring sacrifice: Canterbury remembers

Village holds annual ceremony outdoors to honour area veterans

U

nder clear blue skies and comfortable November temperatures, Canterbury honoured area veterans with an outdoor ceremony in front of the village’s cenotaph situated at the Canterbury High School.

Recently elected Canterbury Mayor Tanya Cloutier said she always attended the village’s Remembrance service held annually on the Sunday before Remembrance Day, but this was her first ceremony as mayor.

“I take great pride in our community and all events held here, this one being one of the most important,” said Cloutier.

While acknowledging this year’s event felt different in her new role, she said she was further honoured to serve as emcee.

“There is a great committee that organizes our services consisting of Rev. Greg Williams, Ron Furrow, Clifton Furrow and Pastor Charles

Yerxa,” Cloutier said.

“This year, like last, we held the ceremony outside due to COVID.” Canterbury welcomed veterans, Legion and ANAVET members, firefighters, members of the community, and others to the ceremony.

She explained residents attending could watch from their cars and tune into radio station 91.9 to listen.

“We had a great turnout, as we have in years past,” Cloutier said.

United Church Pastor, Rev. Greg Williams and Master Warrant Officer Retired Rocky Grant also took the microphone during the Canterbury Remembers service.

Grant delivered the Message of Remembrance and placed poppies on the cross for each name as Cloutier read the roll call.

The program for the event included the wellknown epitaph, which encapsulates the importance of Remembrance.

Great weather and gorgeous scenery for bumbling

BEAUTIFUL BUMBLES

W

ith only four weeks left to our ATV season, all I can say is what a great year we have had, even with the pandemic.

The mornings have been a bit cooler, but we bundle up in layers and usually take our jackets off by noon.

As we bumble along the trails, I notice that the trees have shed most of their leaves, which have formed a carpet of many colours.

The needles from the larch tree, also known as tamarack, have turned yellow and starting to fall off.

Apples are abundant along the trails, and an abundance of cranberries is still hanging on the leafless bushes, which is great for the partridge.

Sarah (our granddaughter) is home from university for the fall break and wishes to go on a bumble.

The day starts with the most beautiful sunrise, but it becomes overcast as the morning goes on.

We unload our buggies and head toward the trails leaving all our worries and cares at home.

As we travel along the route, the leaves dance behind us as if they welcome us to their world of nature.

Taking a road off the managed trail, we stopped for lunch. What is that I hear? The water gushing over the rocks at Eel River Falls is so calming, and what better way to spend lunchtime than listening to this sound.

“OH, THAT SMELL!” Yes, you guessed right – hot dogs and onions cooking-the best way to enjoy hotdogs is outdoors on the trail.

I sure enjoyed my hot tomato soup on this cool day. It was hard to get out of the lawn chairs – as it seemed like Debra, Joanne and myself may

be ready for a nap.

Listening to the waterfalls and a full belly appeared to do that to us. We packed up and continued to Scott Siding, where we headed to some woods trails which eventually took us back to Benton.

Here we stop to enjoy the dam. There has been so much rain this season that the dam has been overflowing with water.

The water was like a mirror today. I have seen an eagle here, but today he’s nowhere to be found.

I was a little disappointed as they are so much fun to watch.

It has been a great day for us all.

Loading up our buggies on the trailers, we return to reality.

Bidding everyone goodbye until the next bumble, I head for home.

ADVENTURES OF AN ACCIDENTAL FARMER

ovember is the time of year when a few apples remain hanging on the old apple trees, along with a smattering of colourful leaves along the road on my walks with Bella.

This November morning, I’m reflecting on the Halloween candy that I ate, but more importantly, on the trick-or-treaters that we had come to our home last night.

I’m thinking about how the children with their costumes brought smiles to our faces, how the neighbourhood families took time out of their busy lives to stop by and say Happy Halloween, along

with receiving some treats.

While it probably seems insignificant, when I moved to Newburg three years ago, we only had one family of trick-ortreaters, and I was disappointed. I felt left out of the group, or as the farmer in me would say, out of the herd.

For many years I was the summer seasonal resident of Newburg. I tried to stay connected to family and friends in Carleton County. Still, truthfully, once I got back to Massachusetts, I placed my time and energy in my work, along with friends and family, so Newburg connections fell by the wayside.

Now that I’m here day in and day out, season after season, I feel established, settled, accepted, all because some trick-ortreaters came knocking at our door.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that mean a lot.

Along that vein, being part of Carleton County means being part of a

community that takes pride in recognizing the men and women who have served in the U.S. Forces and the Canadian Armed forces.

I admire how the Town of Woodstock has banners with faces, not just names, aligning Main Street, honouring small-town heroes.

Seeing the crosses line up on the front lawn of the Woodstock Armoury causes me to stop and reflect, with a heavy heart, that so many gave up so much for others.

In a big city, one of the last parades I attended was the Veterans Day parade. It was a beautiful day, not too cold, and I expected the streets lined with people everywhere.

I remember leaving the parade with sadness to witness so few people in attendance to honour the city’s veterans.

I have a lot of respect for the cenotaph ceremony, held on Nov. 11, in rain, snow or cold, honouring those that have gone before us, with many people

quietly attending, Lest We Forget.

My father, Joseph Culbert, served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer. He was stationed in Korea and Germany as a border patrol officer.

He taught me and my brother Johnny that when you pull up to an international border, you show respect by turning your vehicle off.

He recalled to us on numerous occasions that when he was on border patrol duty, it was difficult to hear what the occupants of the vehicle were saying over the sound of the running motor. Not to mention the smell of exhaust which could make a person sick by the end of the day.

Speaking n his mild manner, he said it takes mere minutes to turn off the vehicle to show respect to border agents.

Before my father pulled away from a border stop, he always said, “thank you for your service.” That’s now a family tradition to

say thank you to all those serving and protecting us.

An old shoe and mystical charm

LIVING HISTORY

N

ine-year-old little Phoebe skipped across the cleared land.

This was going to be her new home. Not often was she allowed to come to watch the men at work with knives, axes and saws, but her grandfather, Charles Boyer, was coming with more handmade wooden pins, pegs, spikes, and nails. Much had been accomplished since she visited last.

She saw her father carving roman numerals in the sides of the pile of long hewn square beams.

Ten were going to be laid across the wide stone walls of the dirt basement and ten more across the beams that framed the first floor and later the second floor. All the hard

work had been done after falling and limbing the trees to make the twelveinch beams and smaller trees milled for the walls, lath and shingles. The trough to mix the plaster was waiting, and the material was on the site.

“Ouch!”

Phoebe screamed as she hopped on her right foot, holding her left foot in the air. Her anguish face made her father, William, stop.

“What’s wrong, Phoebe?” he called.

“Oh, Daddy, I stepped on a rock. I think I am going to lose my foot.” She was crying.

William sat her on a barrel and took off her shoe and her wool sock.

After careful examination, he suggested there was no need to lose the foot, holding back a chuckle.

His expression changed to a concerned look with furrowed brow and glaring eyes when he picked up her shoe to put it back on.

“Your shoe, Phoebe, has a large hole in it, and you have broken through the sides. No wonder you were hurt. I think it’s time for another pair. “ This made Phoebe

feel better, but she knew shoes were expensive.

She had worn these durable shoes for three years. Since the leather was pliable, it stretched as she grew. A large gaping hole revealed the layers. The front-laced ankle shoe with a square toe was stitched on the top and then punched; four eyelets were still intact but stretched from the leather lace. As she grew, her father cut the leather down from a high top to an ankle shoe for comfort, leaving a distorted top as the edge dips to the heel.

Over the next month, Phoebe set the idea of new shoes to the back of her mind and continued to pull on her ankle boots to run in the mud, straw and occasion animal manure.

It was Monday, and her father suggested a memorable trip contrary to their routine Sabbath rides.

They left their grandfather’s house and travelled through Victoria Corner towards Somerville, the road wide enough for two carriages to pass when they met.

“We have a surprise for you, Phoebe. We have

bought you new shoes,” her father spoke after they entered their Somerville property. The house was close to completion. Proudly her father reached under the seat of the horse-drawn carriage and pulled out a cloth bundle, her new shoes.

Her excitement could not be contained. She put them on with giggles and smiles, hugging her father and her mother simultaneously.

“Today, we are going to conceal your old shoe in the east wall of the house,” he remarked as he picked up the tattered, well-worn shoe.

Her raised curved eyebrows and her open eyes and mouth expressed her surprise. “But why, father, why would you put my shoe in the wall?”

“It is a magical practice that British people do and have done since 1600 when a home is built. A priest put a worn boot inside a chimney, so when evil spirits entered buildings through the chimney, they mistook the shoe as a human and entered the toe forever. The household would then be pro-

“But Father, why would the shoe not burn?” Phoebe asked.

“We are not putting it in the chimney. We are putting it on the east side of the house facing the river. If, indeed, the mystical practice was genuine, why take a chance. We will respect the belief of our forefathers and hope for fruitful powers. “ “I think this is a perfect place to conceal this shoe. The house was completed on the outside with clapboards that covered a split lathe with plaster mixed with horsehair. The shoe was amid the two plastered walls between

two windows facing east that overlooked the river and the infant settlement of Hartland.

On April 8, 2021, when the plastered wall of the Kennedy home facing east was stripped, carpenters discovered the shoe. The leather was soft and pliable but once exposed to the air, it stiffened. The airtight walls kept the time capsule that linked generations. A distant relative of the Kennedys owned the shoe. Out of respect for its original purpose, the shoe will go back into the Kennedy Heritage house in Somerville. Why dispute the mystical concept?

Olivia DeMerchant: For the love of rugby

The Woodstock native talks about her life on the field

livia DeMerchant first stepped on the rugby field as a Grade 7 student at Woodstock Middle School. She returned to the field in Grade 9 as a 15-year-old student at Woodstock High School. At the time, she never imagined the sport would take her far. While familiar with hockey, DeMerchant was drawn to the inclusivity of a sport once dominated by males.

“I really enjoyed that it was a really inclusive sport.

Meaning it was a sport all body types could thrive; all your friends could be included. I didn’t have to feel like I was the wrong shape, as I did sometimes in female hockey,” DeMerchant said.

The 30-year-old finished her final two years of high school at Stanstead College in Quebec. She continued developing her rugby skills. After graduation, she was invited to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, to play on their women’s wom-

en’s team. DeMerchant honed her skills to become an excellent defender and helped earn the team three national championships in 2010, 2012, and 2018. She has received the Coach’s Award and Tournament MVP numerous times and has acted as team captain on various teams.

In 2013, DeMerchant began playing for the Senior Canada Team, which she continues to play with today. With her help, the team was successful at two World Cups, placing second in 2014 and fifth in 2017. The team just wrapped up a competition in Colorado for the fall tour.

They played two games against the USA, with DeMerchant acting as captain for the first match. The games were part of the Pacific Four Series - Canada won both games. With the pandemic, these were the first games the team played in two years.

“It was great to reconnect a year out from the World Cup 2022 after it

was postponed from 2021 due to COVID,” shares DeMerchant. The team travelled to England on Nov. 7 to finish the fall tour and played England on Nov. 14 and Wales on Nov. 21. DeMerchant will finish off her pro contract at the Exeter Chiefs in the United Kingdom in December, then return to Halifax for training. The team has the next Pacific Four Series in June 2022 and the World Cup in October 2022; both will be hosted in New Zealand.

DeMerchant says she’s looking forward to both tournaments.

DeMerchant says the pandemic has made enjoying rugby difficult.

“We have to test all the time, before games, before all planes, and after arriving in new places even with everyone being double vaccinated. It causes issues for fans and family to come.”

DeMerchant’s parents, Chris and Sandra, sold the family’s dairy farm back when she started to play

competitively, wanting to watch her games in person as much as they could.

Travel restrictions have prevented DeMerchan’ts biggest fans from witnessing her latest achievements.

“My parents would usually follow me to watch in person, but with COVID, it’s more difficult.”

DeMerchant isn’t sure what kind of rugby future she’ll have after her trip to the world cup, but she knows the lessons from the sport will stay with her.

“Rugby has been so important in my life. I have been able to travel the world and gain experiences that I would not have had otherwise. I gained friends from all areas and really expanded my view of the world. I have learned many life skills from playing rugby that I will take forward into my life after rugby.”

DeMerchant says she is forever grateful for the sport for helping to mould her into the woman she is today.

or the second time in three years, the Nackawic High School golf team are provincial A champions.

The team, featuring Bruce Stairs, Gabe Ouellet, Alex MacFarlane, Liam Clark, Gavin Calder, and Colton MacElwain, earned the prestigious title Oct. 23 at the St. Stephen Golf Club.

Head coach Peter Legacy and assistant John McCauley led the team to the N.B. banner.

NHS was one of five teams qualifying from the South-West NBIAA zone.
