‘WE DID IT RIGHT, RIGHT FROM THE START’: DR. MICHAEL PERLEY HORIZON HEALTH UPPER RIVER VALLEY REGION NEW CHIEF OF STAFF IS PART OF THE TEAM EFFORT BATTLING COVID-19 BYJIM DUMVILLE

W

hen Dr. Michael Perley accepted the position as Chief of Staff for Horizon Health’s Upper Valley Region, which he began on March 1, he didn’t realize most of the time in his new role would be dealing with a pandemic sweeping the globe. “I just thought it was a problem in China,” he said, thinking back to the time when he accepted the position with Horizon Health. It didn’t take long for COVID-19 to consume most of his attention as

he continues to work with Horizon staff, New Brunswick health officials and the provincial government to treat patients and limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. In his role as chief of staff for the region, Perley explained, his primary focus is maintaining a high quality of patient care in facilities throughout the region, which includes the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Perth-Andover and other smaller facilities.

Since early March and forward into an unclear future, Perley explained, the job includes making hospitals “COVID friendly.” In comparison to other regions in North America, New Brunswick has become a shining example of how to handle the COVID-19 crisis. With no deaths and only two active cases, the province’s efforts, to date, have proven effective in limiting the virus’s impact on the population Continued on page 2

Paul Jack, president and unit head, announced the temporary shutdown of the Nackawic mill. “In order to protect the business in the face of continued market volatility and reduced viscose fibre demand caused by the pandemic and the global economic slowdown, the mill will be taking a marketrelated short-term downtime,” officials explained in the memo. Neither AV Nackawic officials nor union representatives for Unifor local 219 returned requests for interviews about the planned closure.

The memo, however, outlined the impact of the novel coronavirus on the company worldwide, noting its plant in Wuhan, China was forced to close in late January and its fibre plants in India were forced to close on March 22 when the government imposed a nationwide shutdown as it battled the spread of the virus. The memo explained the shutdowns left the Nackawic mill with a large inventory of pulp, noting the continuation of warehousing pulp was not ecoSee NACKAWIC on page 2
