READY FOR RIBFEST
ORGANIZERS EXCITED TO SUPPORT THREE CANCER GROUPS By JIM DUMVILLE
A
s co-chairs Scott Dunlop and Andrew Garnett help put the final touches on the third annual Woodstock Ribfest, their focus remains on creating a special weekend of entertainment for the region and, most importantly, funding the local battle against cancer. Dunlop said the goal for the third annual Ribfest, scheduled for May 31 through June 2 on the infield of Connell Park Raceway, is to build upon the success of years one and two. At the same time, he said, Ribfest organizers want to maximize the funds raised for three important cancer-fighting or-
ganizations in the region. He explained funds raised at Ribfest are divided equally between River Valley Cancer Support Group, the Living Beyond Cancer Peer Support Group and the Woodstock Relay for Life, which raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Dunlop said the division of funds helps battle cancer from three critical angles. He said the cancer support group provides direct funds to local people and families dealing with the high costs of battling the disease. Meanwhile, he said, the peer support group connects cancer survi-
vors, experts and others with people living with cancer to provide the emotional support and advice needed to deal with the physical and psychological stresses which accompany diagnosis and treatment. “They deal with the emotional side,” said Dunlop. Then, Dunlop added, the Relay for Life, through the Canadian Cancer Society, helps fund the vital cancer research to continue to find preventions, improve treatment and possibly even find cures for various forms of cancer. A
fearless champion of support services for cancer patients and survivors in Carleton County has died. Initially diagnosed with stage three invasive breast cancer in 2014, Tina Harding helped start the Living Beyond Cancer – Peer Support Group and was instrumental in bringing the Stay Strong therapy program to the Upper River Valley Hospital, raising more than $6,000 in two days for the initiative. In 2017, doctors told Harding her cancer had

spread to her lymph nodes and lungs. In 2018, it had spread to her cerebellum. Throughout each diagnosis, Harding never gave up and worked to make life better for people just like her with the hope of inspiring her 14-yearold son, Hunter. “I wanted to do something tangible, something Hunter could see. I hoped it would make him proud of me,” she told me during an interview for agelessNB magazine last year. Continued on page 2
