COVID-19: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
LOCAL DOCTORS WORK TO EDUCATE PUBLIC BY THERESA BLACKBURN
T
iming is everything, and for emergency room physician Dr. Hanif Chatur of Woodstock, and his partner, Dr. Jonathan Clayton, from the Fredericton region, timing is what motivated the doctors to start a new, online medical service. Dr. Clayton and Dr. Chatur co-founded eVisitNB.ca, launching the online healthcare platform in February. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed COVID-19 as a pandemic, but what we also have is an ‘infodemic’ with a vast amount of conflicting information out there,” said Dr. Chatur.
The coronavirus has caused widespread panic. Some stores have run out of disinfectant wipes and toilet paper. “With so much information, people don’t know where to turn for trusted information. With our platform, we’re trying to ensure people get the right information.” Dr. Chatur and Dr. Clayton collaborated to improve access to healthcare by allowing patients to access healthcare providers online. N
Liberal Leader Kevin Vickers (Jim Dumville photo)
ew Brunswick Liberal leader Kevin Vickers and the official opposition left no doubt about their intentions. Long before Premier Blaine Higgs and the Tory government introduced its 2020-21 budget on March 10, the Liberal leader said his party would not support it. Speaking to the River Valley Sun on Feb. 24, Vickers was unequivocal in his party’s plans to try to bring down the government and force a spring election regardless of what was in the budget. He said the actions of the
government in announcing overnight closures of six rural hospitals, then reversing the decision in the face of widespread protest, demonstrated the lack of planning and consultation which warranted a no-confidence motion. However, the N.B. Liberals’ appetite for a spring election wavered somewhat by March 12, under the rapidly growing threat of the coronavirus crisis. In a CBC report, LibSee BUDGET on page 4
