WELCOME HOME, SAM Family, friends, and community share love in a welcome-home display for 12-year-old bravely battling cancer BY JIM DUMVILLE

J

acksonville’s 12-yearold Samantha Harper is bravely facing her tough battle with cancer, but on Feb. 12, she learned she’s not facing it alone. After being in Halifax since May 2020 to undergo leukemia treatment at the IWK Children’s Hospital, Sam arrived home to find an outpouring of community-wide love. Family, neighbours, Meduxnekeag Community School classmates, Jacksonville United Church congregation, par-

ents’ CBSA workmates and even the local RCMP made it loud and clear how much she is loved and supported. Sam’s mother, Heidi, said they arrived home to find a surprise roadside welcoming party waiting for Samantha. “We even had an RCMP escort down the 560 onto Hopkins Road,” said Heidi. She said the surprise community gesture lifted Sam and her whole family’s spirits, including twin

sister Sydney, older sister Abby, father Scott and mother. “Samantha and her family are so thankful to everyone in our community who have supported and encouraged her (and our family) since the beginning,” said Heidi in an email to the River Valley Sun. “We have so many people to thank. We are proud to call this community home.” See SAM on page 2
