BOMB UNIT REMOVES SUSPICIOUS OBJECT FROM HARTLAND COVERED BRIDGE

‘Police are investigating to determine exactly what it is and why it was placed on the bridge’: RCMP BY JIM DUMVILLE - Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

O

ne of New Brunswick’s most famous landmarks faced a threat of damage Sunday night, June 27, as West District RCMP responded just after 8 p.m. to reports of a suspicious object on the World’s Longest Covered Bridge in Hartland N.B. West District RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Gallant said officers, upon arrival at the scene, temporarily closed the bridge as a precaution and re-routed traffic while the RCMP explosive disposal unit attended. “There was no risk to

the public during the police operation and no one was injured,” Gallant said. He said the explosive disposal unit removed the object. “Police are investigating to determine exactly what it is and why it was placed on the bridge,” said Gallant. The RCMP did not respond to the River Valley Sun’s request for an update of the object or the investigation. Gallant said the bridge remained closed for a significant period Sunday evening, allowing the ex-

He said there’s no ongoing risk to the public. Gallant said the investigation of the incident remains ongoing, and asks anyone with information to contact the RCMP or Crimestoppers. Harland Fire Chief Mike Walton said his department attended the See BOMB pg. 2
