F

or 14-year-old Daniel Kuwertz, school wasn’t always a happy place. “I used to get in trouble a lot. I was in the office a lot,” the Woodstock teen confessed. Diagnosed with autism at age six, Daniel knows he’s different than other kids. “I didn’t realize when I was being rough when I played with other kids,” he confessed. “The other kids didn’t think much of me, and I didn’t feel good about myself.” Daniel’s mother, Catherine, said he had a hard time with social etiquette.

“He used to ‘police’ other kids, and would get in trouble for that, too,” she explained. But this year was different. This year Daniel was mentored by his teacher, Dana Lawrence, and Townsview Vice Principal Steven Jones. “They would talk to me. They spent more time with me. They made me realize that I had to be a good role model for the younger kids because I was in Grade 8. They got me involved in Early Readers.” The increased responsibility, especially with the Early Readers program,

where older students read to younger ones, seemed to be the key to keeping Daniel out of the office. “Not being in trouble all the time made me feel better about going to school. I was only in the office a couple of times this year,” said Daniel. Being awarded the Craig Manufacturing Turnaround Award came as a shock to Daniel and his family. “I was really surprised. I haven’t gotten an award in my entire life,” he said, with a big grin. “It was pretty See AWARD on page 2

DTI PLEADS GUILTY IN BRIDGE FATALITY ADMITS SAFETY VIOLATION RESULTED IN DEATH OF WOODSTOCK MAN

T

he New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure pleaded guilty in Woodstock provincial court on Tuesday, June 16, to charges surrounding the death of a member of the department’s bridge crew last August near Woodstock. Jimmy Martin of Woodstock died as a result of an accident on Aug. 28, 2019, following injuries sustained while working on a bridge near Woodstock. With Martin’s widow, Rayma, in the gallery, DTI lawyer Julia Young entered

a plea of guilty on behalf of her client to one of three charges. Crown representative Patrick McGuinty told Judge Brian C. McLean the Crown accepted the plea, noting the other charges will be dropped.. McGuinty told the court the DTI officials admitted to a failure to secure a guard rail on the bridge which led to the fatality. The Crown pointed out Rayma to the judge, telling McLean she and other members of the family wish to submit a victim impact DTI PLEA on page 2
