MEGHANN PALMER GRATEFUL FOR SUPPORT BY THERESA BLACKBURN

F

ive weeks after having a double-lung transplant, Meghann Palmer said she’s feeling stronger every day. Palmer finally received her new lungs on Dec. 3, 2019, after waiting for nearly ten months. “The doctors are happy with my progress so far,” said Palmer, who was reached at her apartment in Toronto last week. “Things are going well. My lung function is quite good. Right now, I’m undergoing some tests because they think I might have a bit of an infection – possibly sinus – but other than that, I feel really good. My oxygen levels are usually between 99

and 100 per cent.” Palmer was born with Cystic Fibrosis. Her health was pretty good until about ten years ago. Since then, her lung function steadily declined, and she developed a fungal infection in her lungs. Prior to her transplant, Palmer said her oxygen levels were 90 per cent when she was sitting and considerably lower if she was doing anything beyond that, making it difficult for her to walk or do basic day-to-day things. “I’m doing physiotherapy three times a week for 60 to 90 minutes each time, and getting stronger,” said Palmer.

Doctors are keeping a close eye on Palmer. With the high doses of steroids she was on, she developed diabetes, something many Cystic Fibrosis patients experiences. “I still have a lot of appointments, because they’re keeping a pretty close eye on everything, so I’m at the CF clinic at St. Michael’s (hospital) a lot, as well as seeing doctors (at Toronto General) a lot. So we’re pretty busy,” said Palmer, referring to herself and her mother, Barb, who is still with her in Toronto. As long as things conContinued on page 2

fter 17 years as Chairman of the Board at McCain Foods Ltd., Allison McCain is retiring. The news wasn’t publicly announced, but was shared with employees via internal communications before Christmas. Scott McCain is the new Chairman of the Board. Neither McCain would comment on the change in leadership. Before becoming Chairman, Allison McCain was the board’s Deputy Chair, and spent 16 years in Scarborough, United Kingdom, as CEO of

McCain Foods Ltd., Great Britain. Prior to that, he was the head of production for the McCain Foods’ Australian operations. Allison’s contributions outside the corporation include being a former Chancellor of the University of New Brunswick, former Chairman of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Board of Directors, and an active member of the Carleton County Refugee Committee.
