ROTARY GIVES $100,000 TO URVH FOUNDATION CLUB’S DONATION TO HELP FUND NEW ENDOSCOPY UNIT BY THERESA BLACKBURN

A

‘surprise’ donation from the Rotary Club of Woodstock to the recently formed Upper River Valley Hospital (URVH) Foundation received enthusiastic applause at the Rotary Red Carpet Gala Event in Woodstock on Feb. 8. “We decided this would be kept secret, and we wanted to make a splash at the event, and I think we succeeded,” said Rotary President Allison McLellan. Their secret was a $100,000 donation. “An anonymous donor approached the Rotary,” explained McLellan. “They asked the club to match their $100,000 donation.

It was an easy choice to make.” McLellan said the donation met the club’s fourway test. “Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned? It fit all the parameters we use as a funding guideline,” said McLellan. President McLellan also noted that the donation dovetailed nicely into Rotary’s priority to support the health and wellness of mothers and children, both locally and globally. The funds are going toward the URVH Foundation’s first priority – replac-

During the presentation at the Rotary Gala, URVH Facility Manager Sherry Leech told the crowd the purchase of this particular piece of equipment will mean ‘high clarity exams of the esophagus, stomach, and bowel’ and allow doctors to ‘biopsy and diagnose ulcers, precancerous and cancerous areas.’ The estimated cost for the unit is $290,000. With the two donations, only $90,000 is left to fundraise. Dr. Bill Mutrie is a member of the URVH FoundaContinued on page 2

rystal meth addiction and related crimes are a major problem in Carleton County and local police forces are working hard to reduce its impact on society. But, say Woodstock Police Chief Gary Forward and West District Woodstock RCMP Sgt. Brendan Flewelling, police alone cannot solve the problem. “It’s going to take a societal shift,” said Flewelling. “We’re making a dent, but it’s an ongoing battle. Forward agrees, noting his force works closely

with the RCMP and other law enforcement agencies, but the solution requires input from across the community. “It can’t just be enforcement,” he says. Both police officers said they are working with other groups and agencies to be proactive in fighting the growing meth problem. Forward said a community advisory committee is being created to map out a response to the problem. While not spearheading the committee, ForContinued on page 2
