64-YEAR TRADITION CONTINUES
STEWART FAMILY GIFTS SANTA, REINDEER, AND SLEIGH TO TOWN OF WOODSTOCK BY JIM DUMVILLE
I
n 1956, Bud and Dodie Stewart completed a Christmas display for their three young children. Over the next six and a half decades, the Santa, reindeer and sleigh lovingly built for Gary, Janet, and Mark would become a traditional sign of the season for an entire community. Whether travelling past the Stewarts’ longtime home at the corner of Grover and Elm Streets in their hustle and bustle of Christmas activity or making a deliberate trip to see the seasonal icon, generations would view the display. Each year they would find the Santa waving to them from the same spot on the family’s front lawn. For Christmas 2020, Santa will no longer be waving from his usual location. Instead, the beloved display will be wishing the community happy holidays from a new site just a few blocks up Main Street, next to the town hall and Woodstock police station. With the loss of Bud in May of 2019, and Dodie’s decision to sell the family home and move into a senior’s residence, the Grover Street tradition came to an end. To ensure the Santa
and reindeer remained a Woodstock tradition, the family donated the display to the town. In the late afternoon of Friday, Dec. 4, Dodie, accompanied by sons Gary and Mark, met with Mayor Art Slipp and Coun. Randy Leonard to officially unveil the display at its new location. “We love our old Santa Claus,” said Dodie. After selling the house, she said, the family wanted to make sure it remained on display for See TRADITION on page 2
