Reaching the entire world with the good news of Jesus Christ is a big task, but it’s what Jesus asked all His followers to do. This mission is our Global Project. At River Valley Church, Global Project is what we call our global missions efforts. Through Global Project we all have the opportunity to participate in this great mission that Jesus Christ asked us to be a part of.

At the end of Matthew’s gospel, we find one of the most well-known sermons of all time. It is the pinnacle of Jesus’ teaching, and it serves as the foundational purpose of the Church. The message, while short, gives a clear call with firm direction—GO!
This sobering knowledge compels our church to a response. We are passionate and determined about reaching everyone we can with the gospel, and we are willing to sacrifice everything for those who would otherwise have no access. Our response is to give 10% off the top of our general fund to support over 300 missionaries and missions organizations around the world every month. It is why we organize and send one Global Team almost every week around the world, both to make a difference as well as have a difference made in us. It is why we are on a journey to see 500 individuals sent out from our church to the rest of the world sharing the gospel for at least a year—and maybe a lifetime.
If you have been at River Valley Church for any amount of time, you will likely have heard the phrase, "Our Heart is Global," but there can sometimes be confusion on what this means or why we say it. It is one of the most common questions I get asked from newer people in our church: "Why is our heart global?" One of the main reasons we are so passionate about a global heart comes down to the concept of access. In the United States, there are people who are lost— people who do not know the authentic, life-changing relationship found in Jesus. These same people drive by numerous churches on their way to work. They have friends and family members who follow Jesus and have likely attended church occasionally throughout their life. Our neighbors, our family, our friends…all have some level of access, even if limited, to the gospel of Jesus.
God's heart is for all humanity. It is about people— about generations of people who are separated from God. I want our church to align with God's heart. We have the call, we have the drive, and we have the resources to move the gospel of Jesus forward. Our heart is global because God's heart is global.
The same cannot be said for the rest of the world. Today, there are people around the world who are as equally lost as those across our street, but they have zero access to the gospel. No one in their life knows Jesus, and there are few if any churches in their country, let alone their community. Over 2.9 billion people around the world are still waiting to hear the good news of Jesus for the first time. There are entire people groups who don't have any part of the Bible printed in their language. People every day are living without knowing that life in Jesus is even a possibility.

What verses come to mind when you think of the word "missions?" Most of us are hard pressed to name more than the old faithful Great Commission. For years our church culture has singled out this passage to be the theme of our missions conferences and the motivation for those who go. It's no wonder that our obedience is slow—who wants to hang their future on one verse?

The Bible has a lot more to say on this subject than just the Great Commission. We need to understand the concept of a Biblical basis for missions. Maybe you're saying, "The Biblical basis—is there one?" Yes! God's desire for His glory to cover the earth permeates every book of the Bible. Missions is not your pastor's idea or your campus minister's idea, or even your idea—it is God's. Since creation, God has been intent on redeeming all peoples to Himself. As Christians, it is vital that we see the world as He sees it. Let's look at the Bible in light of God's heart for the world, and we will see that from Genesis to Revelation, He is beckoning you, me, and all of His people to join Him in bringing every people group to His throne. There will be a representative from every nation, tribe, people, and language worshipping at His feet. God is a missionary God, and from cover to cover He is showing us His mission.

I will never be the same as I was. I have forever left a piece of my heart in that beautiful country we traveled to on my Global Team. The thing about traveling is you never come back the same. It's funny how 10 days can change the course of your life. I remember, before I left on my Global Team, a friend asked me, "What impact are you trying to make when you go there?" And my reply was, "I mean, how much can you really do in one week?" Now, having returned from a Global Team, the question is asked again: How much of an impact can you make in one week? Well, that depends on how you view it. How much is it worth your life being changed—your eyes being opened? How much is it worth gaining an understanding, even just a small amount, of a people group and their culture? How much is it worth sharing your story of hope with even only one person? Maybe God can change their heart, and they can change the lives of so many more. How much is it worth opening your heart to pray for people or things you had never even thought of before? I can tell you, with God by my side, with tears in my eyes, with love in my heart, with new friendships, and a stronger hope than ever before, that God can

take a week and use you and others to impact lives that will last a lifetime. I know my life will never be the same. God doesn't belong in a box full of timeframes. All He needs is a moment where you choose to say "yes" to Him. I serve and follow a big God who can do immeasurably more than you or I could ever ask or imagine. So after numerous hours of travel, staying in places I never thought I'd stay in, meeting people I never thought I'd meet, climbing mountains I never thought I'd be able to climb, and truly seeing people and circumstances that I had never seen before, I will never be the same as I was. Even as a country overflowing with fertile land, more than 50 percent of the Argentinian provinces struggle heavily with child hunger and malnutrition. Twenty percent of the country's population live on less than two dollars a day, and 11 percent are unable to meet basic food needs. Team members may have the opportunity to help with construction of community vegetable gardens and greenhouses in impoverished areas and share God's life-giving Word with local university students.

Cambodia Throughout this Southeast Asian country live over 16 million people who have not heard the good news of the gospel. At the same time, many children living in Cambodia lack the resources and support necessary to obtain a proper education, and, as a result, are falling behind in school—especially those living in rural areas. Team members will participate in evangelistic outreach, school ministry, and missionary support aimed at combating this developmental crisis. Additionally, Cambodian excursions such as riding elephants and visiting one of the oldest religious monuments in the world, the Ancient Angkor Wat, will provide members with a unique cultural look into life in Southeastern Asia.

Over 600,000 orphans are living in China. Tragically, 98% of children abandoned in China have special needs. Through this Global Team, members will have the opportunity to minister in orphanages and local cafes, while also allowing university students an opportunity to learn and practice English. Global Team Costa Rica is focused on bringing relief to communities facing poverty. In this country, 1.1 million people (22 percent of the population) are currently living in poverty or faced with an unstable home environment. By visiting villages, rafting in supplies and food, and helping with construction projects, members on the team will have the opportunity to offer hope and support for these poverty-stricken communities.

MINISTRY FOCUS
Currently, the construction of religious buildings is prohibited by the Cuban government. As a result, citizens meet in house churches to learn about the Bible and discuss their faith. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 of these house churches exist in the country. As a part of this Global Team, members will have the opportunity to visit house churches and assist with community projects in an environment dominated by secularism. Additionally, the team will enjoy a day on the beach.

Cyprus
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Members of this team will participate in cultural exchange and relational evangelism at the university, sharing the good news with a country that is majority Greek Orthodox and Sunni Islam. On days off, members can hang out on the beach and participate in the unique experience of island water baptisms.

From community service projects to prayer walks and missionary support, Global Team East Africa is a unique opportunity for a cultural exchange into African culture while on mission for the Church. Forty-five percent of the total population falls below the poverty line, with 23.5 percent living in extreme poverty, and two out of every three people unreached—an environment thirsty for the hope of the gospel. Outside of the mission and communitybased work, team members can enjoy days on the beach and become immersed in everything from authentic food to dances and African traditions.

In Egypt, 86 percent of the 80 million citizens are Muslim. Islam controls the legal system, state education, and to a large extent, family life. Members of the Egypt Global Team will visit Muslim universities, participate in missions education and training, and connect with existing local missionaries. Additionally, Egyptian Pyramids and camel riding provide a unique cultural experience on this Global Team.

During downtime, the team will travel to local tourist attractions and see Northern Europe scenery.

eSwatini has the world’s highest estimated prevalence rate of HIVinfected adults. As a result, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of vulnerable children as well as households lacking parental guidance. On this Global Team, members will have the opportunity to provide orphan and medical care to these children while also assisting local missionaries associated with Children's Cup—a nonprofit dedicated to providing physical, spiritual, educational, and economic support to children around the world. During off time, the team will have the chance to experience both a night and day safari adventure.

In the country of Honduras, over half of the population lives below the poverty line. Additionally, there are about 57 physicians per every 100,000 people—showing the desperate need for medical care in this Central American country. On this Global Team, medical teams of practitioners, nurses, dentists, and interpreters are headed to help these communities desperately needing health care attention. In their off time, individuals will have an opportunity to zip line through the rainforest, snorkel, or visit a mountain spa.

Indonesia Global Team Indonesia is focused on leading English and cultural exchange groups as well as Bible studies to minister to the many unreached people in this country. Currently, there are around 165 million unreached people belonging to 234 unreached people groups. With 3,000 higher education institutions, team members will practice evangelism and sharing the gospel to these individuals. During their downtime, team members can water tube down an Indonesian river and visit bat caves.

believe to be lost entirely to the forces of darkness. He moved within me to see the reality of His reach; His power and might indeed extend far beyond the reach of evil.
In the summer of 2017, my husband Thomas and I knew we were approaching the four-year mark of attending River Valley Church and wanted to accomplish our goal of embarking on our first Global Team. So with fall quickly approaching, and a short window of time available for us to go in the early part of the following year, we began to puruse the list of upcoming Global Teams. The only option that worked with our schedules was Global Team Egypt.
It wasn't until we returned home that I came to understand how true this revelation was for the lies I believed about myself. I would never have chosen to go to Egypt, or anywhere even close to that part of the world because I believed that I wasn't equipped for the task. But Heavenly realities would come to show me that He always knew exactly what I could handle, and was ever-near to provide for me the strength, protection, and peace I needed for each new day.
I've always shied away from missions due to health and dietary factors, believing that I was limited to only Europe and North America, and that was just the way it was. Having children only cemented that idea all the more, so seeing Egypt as our only feasible option sent my mind reeling.
My life was changed in February of 2018 when my husband and I set foot in Cairo, Egypt. I met my God in a land seemingly ruled by darkness, and He opened up before me a plan far grander and more wonderful than I could have ever believed I was suited for. I thank God for the strength and peace of mind it took to take this one step of obedience amidst the sea of excuses not to. God has always known me better than I know myself, and I believe He was eager to show me what I hadn't yet discovered.
I can't possibly go to Egypt! What will I eat? What if I get sick? What if something happens to us or the kids? But I have this thing about obedience, and I knew that I had set out to obey before I ever knew the destination, so trust in the Lord was going to be my means of seeing the task through to the end. I left for Egypt with one passage on my mind and heart: "O Eternal One, I ask you to allow my servant to see Heavenly realities. The Eternal awakened Elisha's servant so that he could see. This is what he saw: the mountain was covered with horses and chariots of fire surrounding Elisha." (2 Kings 6:17-18)

Before I ever opened up my suitcase, the Lord asked me to bring along an expectation of seeing His presence in that land—to pray for eyes to see Heavenly realities. Amidst the noise, the busyness, the sights, and smells, my eyes continued to see the work of God in a place that many

Medical Kit You never know what bumps, bruises or bites you’ll encounter, so include a small medical kit in your backpack. Make sure you have enough of your daily prescriptions to last the duration of your Global Team and carry them in their pharmacy-supplied bottle.
Bible and Journal Keep your journal handy to record your experiences and what God is teaching you. Cash and Debit/Credit Card Find out how to best obtain the local currency when you are traveling, whether through debit, credit, or cash. If you plan on using plastic, don’t forget to call your bank to see if your cards will work internationally. Let them know the dates and location of your Global Team to avoid suspicious activity alerts on your account.
Adapter Plug and Voltage Converter Electrical outlets are shaped differently all around the world. You will likely need an adapter plug to use them. Additionally, your electronics might be made for a specific voltage different from the power supply. To avoid frying anything, check to see if you need to pack a voltage converter.
Passport Keep your passport on you when traveling. There is no need to bring your social security card.
Small Flashlight and Batteries A flashlight is not necessary until it is. Be prepared and pack a small one in your backpack.
Necessary and Appropriate Clothing Take time to think critically about what clothes you really need for your Global Team. Pack the essentials. Remember, less is more. You will need clothes to work in, for out-and-about excursions, and for church. Familiarize yourself with modesty standards and typical dress for someone your age and gender.
Camera Capturing photos is a great way to remember your Global Team. Before you start snapping away, though, ask your Team Leader(s) what pictures are appropriate to take and where. Remember, photos should always be taken with permission and in the context of relationship.
Linens and Toiletries You might be able to purchase some personal items in-country. Ask your Team Leader if you need to pack your own sheets and towels for your Global Team. But you definitely need to bring your own toothbrush.
Carry-On Tip Pack all prescription medicine, essential toiletries and a change of clothes as well as reading material, snacks and music.
Comfortable Walking Shoes Once in-country, most of your travel will be on foot. Invest in a comfortable pair of walking shoes that will last the entire Global Team, and break them in before you leave to avoid blisters.

This Global Team can visit the Hagia Sophia Museum, a beautiful former Greek Orthodox Christian Cathedral.

For enjoyment in this historical environment, team members can tour landmarks such as the Hoa Lo Prison where many U.S. pilots were held during the Vietnam War.

Zanzibar faces teacher and classroom shortages that result in 150 students per classroom while the goal size is 45 students per class. As well as poor learning environments, Zanzibar’s Judicial government is run by Islam which makes it near impossible for Christians to worship or express their faith. As a part of the Zanzibar Global Team, members will have the opportunity to serve by leading English and cultural exchange programs, engage in community service projects and prayer walks, and assist and encourage missionaries. During time off, Zanzibar offers snorkeling off of Prison Island—one of the country's historical landmarks.

The Genesis of the
River Valley 500 The life and death of missionary William Borden inspired us to pray an even bigger prayer.

grabbed the money and paid it on the spot. At that moment, one of the missionaries said, "I believe you're supposed to raise up 500 missionaries from your church—one for every dollar you just paid to restore this grave."
Since the beginning, River Valley Church has always prayed that God would raise up individuals, couples, and families to share the gospel of Jesus Christ overseas. But the life and death of missionary William Borden inspired us to pray an even bigger prayer.
Five hundred missionaries felt like a stretch; the current goal was 100-200 missionaries over the lifetime of River Valley Church. This charge was way outside of Pastor Rob's comfort zone. After receiving confirmation of the goal from others, Pastor Rob starting sharing this vision with key leaders of the congregation. The vision is now known as the River Valley 500.
Borden, born in 1887 to a very wealthy family, gave his life to Christ as a young man. He studied at Yale University and went on to Princeton Seminary. After graduating, he decided to dedicate his life to reaching the Muslims of China. His first stop on that journey was Cairo, Egypt. But at the age of twenty-five, less than a month after he arrived, Borden contracted spinal meningitis and died.
“
Found in the back cover of Borden's Bible were three important phrases that defined his short life. In response to a friend saying that he was wasting his life as a missionary, he wrote two words: "No Reserves." Later, after turning down his dad's offer to take over his company, he wrote two more words: "No Retreats." And shortly before his death, he wrote two final words: "No Regrets." William Borden lived his life with no reserves, no retreats, and no regrets.
“William Borden lived his life with no reserves, no retreats, and no regrets.” The Missionary Action Plan, or MAP, was developed as a four-phase process that helps people determine if they are one of the River Valley 500. We do not just wish for 500 to show up—we've prayed for it, and we have a plan in place. This is 500 people who are wanting to give a year of their life or more to go overseas to minister for Jesus Christ. It's going to take everyone saying, "I'm in!" We need thousands of people to jump in on this with us. We want to send our best. This is our calling—our mission to send our best and see what God does. We will reach the least of these with no reserves, no retreats, and no regrets.
During a visit to the Borden gravesite a few years ago, Pastor Rob, Pastor Justin Mack, and a small group of pastors they were visiting with were yelled at by the graveyard caretaker. He was mad because a group of Christians said they'd pay for Borden's grave to be restored but never paid the bill. Not knowing how much the bill was and wanting to defend the Christians, Pastor Rob said, "We'll pay it!" The bill was $500. Pastor Rob

In 2016, Pastor Rob cast an electric vision, unveiling our church's call of the River Valley 500, the 500 people in our church who would be raised up, sent out as missionaries, and financially supported by our church.
Kent had a rich surrender moment his senior year in college. Bondage and doubt clouded the truth that led to questioning faith itself entirely. But the Lord found him and his migrant heart in a church on a study-abroad trip to Italy, leading to an adamant, heart-cry, and surrendering his life fully to Jesus.
Following that message, Kent and Ashley Hetland's hearts were sparked, igniting something within them that the Lord began long ago. They barely pulled out of the Crosstown Campus parking lot before Ashley leaned over to her husband, "Is the Lord telling you something? Are you hearing anything?"
It was pretty clear that after he met Ashley, God was directing his path for full-time ministry as well. And that Sunday, the call was confirmed—this time together.
"I think we're supposed to go sooner," he responded. Seeking to remain in community and talk about the questions they had, they joined Explore "[Explore] brought a ton of awareness. It's been my favorite thing,

their home for us to live while we prepared to go. Without River Valley as a church and the people in River Valley, we probably wouldn't have hit the field until we were older. It moved the timeline up."
being able to hear from missionaries from all over the globe..to see the real day-in and day-out struggles and the mundane parts, I want to know it all," elaborates Ashley. Kent recalls how "it made me more comfortable that we could do this. I knew about missionaries but didn't really know what their life actually looked like. If it wasn't for the practical steps from the Missionary Action Plan (MAP), we might still be dragging our feet."
Kent recalls how Pastor Rob spoke over them, "Squatters rights are over." And to Kent, this stirred something in his gospel-heart, the very purpose of the Great Commission. "To me, those words meant I was going. I was going to help people get freed from the enemy for the first time. People are just in bondage for their whole life. There's so much spiritual oppression in that part of the world. But we have power when we get there."
Advancing through the MAP, they started the interview process with missionaries from their sending agency on the ground in various continents on the globe, and it brought out the eye-opening truth that "the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." They needed confirmation of which team to join.
The Hetland's have their eyes on the goal. Their preparation and time they intentionally set to pay off debt were not years wasted nor without value. "God uses the steps and seasons to speak to you and equip you. We felt His love in a way we hadn't been able to experience before going through this whole process. That's something to be celebrated and enjoyed, and not missed," remarks Ashley.
Their Lifegroup leader, Chris, came over for dinner and felt the nudge from the Holy Spirit to tell them that it was the Asian Pacific country of Vietnam. Remembering her surprise, Ashley explains, "Vietnam just wasn't on my radar. I had no knowledge of the country except for the war. But the confirmation was comforting. A lot of people were speaking to the Lord on our behalf, and the Lord confirmed to all of us."
Kent and Ashley Hetland, are missionary number 102 and missionary 103, respectively, of the River Valley 500. A sensitivity to yield to the Holy Spirit and a timeline surrendered to His agenda led them to passports in hand, embarking to share the good, good news in an area that has a vast need. It's only just the beginning for them.
Six months of learning curves after that dinner with Chris, they Skyped with the Vietnam missionaries, officially joining the team, and laughed about the all-surpassing peace they now had. They knew the call to go was in their hearts, and the involvement of the church played an integral role that provided community and direction as their missional story unfolded. "Coming to River Valley expedited the process," reveals Ashley. "We had practical steps to follow. We had people cheering us on and offering to help with those steps. 'We want to do this for you,' people would say, and they'd make things possible. People opened up

Awakened Passion “I felt God saying to me, ‘Katie, people do this for Me. They go to countries where people have never heard the gospel, and they just live. And it’s out of a flow of who they are that they have opportunities to share the gospel.’” As a college student, Katie Kohnen went on her first River Valley Global Team in 2016 to the country of Jordan and partnered with LiveDead, an initiative funded by Kingdom Builders whose mission is to bring the church to unreached people groups. "That's when it all started for me," she remembers, "on that Global Team."
She experienced life alongside LiveDead missionaries: visiting locals, helping at the English center, touring a mosque. Seeing how they lived their lives deeply inspired and impacted Katie, and it shattered the missionary stereotypes she had in her mind. "This is what it's like? These people have apartments and artwork in their apartments.

Often lumped together with its neighboring conflictridden countries, Jordan stands apart in the Arab world for its warmth and hospitality to foreigners. In a maledominant culture, she stood out to them as a single woman and was often curiously asked, "Why are you here alone? Who is watching out for you?" Her Jordanian neighbors responded by embracing her as they would their own family. Operating in a family-like model as well, the members of her LiveDead team are all now like brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles to her.
I see their life...they're normal people. They opened up to me, being so vulnerable about things they struggle with." After arriving home in the states, questions continued reeling in her mind: Is this a possibility for me? Can I do this? Is this what God wants me to do? A deep passion for the lost and the unreached Middle East sprung up like a shoot from the roots of her soul. She figured that if this passion was going to go away, then it would in time. But it didn't. Instead, it grew deeper. "It was a burning fire within me that God said, 'I want you to step out and do this.'" She continued praying about it, talked with trusted leaders in her life, and faithfully followed the Holy Spirit's prompt. While simultaneously finishing her business degree and applying to go back to Jordan for a year, she raised the funds and flew back where her soul awakened.
Currently on furlough, Katie will follow the God-call to return to the Middle East and will be heading back to Jordan for more training and then onto Iraq where the soil is ready, and people are hungry for the gospel. "God is calling people to the harvest—he needs laborers. Even if I don't feel qualified, which I never do, God speaks in that. He's like, 'I just want you to go and I'll provide for you.'" She encourages those who feel that same prompt to take off the heavy garment of pressure to save others that those in overseas vocational ministry can feel. "His yoke is easy and his burden is light. If it's work for God, how are we different from our Muslim neighbors? It's not in your power to save someone; it's God working through you. And through the process of it, God pulls you closer to himself, which is a beautiful thing.
She touched down in Amman, Jordan, a populous city built on seven hills of densely packed tan and gritty white buildings that reflect the hot sun. Katie's new soundtrack became the bustle and culture of the Middle East: honking taxis, the Muslim call to prayer, the lively sounds of an entirely new and complex language echoing off the streets and alleyways. Yet she experienced His peace, like a promise kept, and held onto it that entire year in Amman. "No matter the chaos or noises around you, He quiets it, and you're able to find your peace. My peace is within me, and I learned how to tap into that and to abide, above everything else."
