DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Dear River Trails Residents,

As summer begins to wind down and families prepare for the excitement of a new school year, we at River Trails Park District look forward to embracing all that the fall season has to offer. While the colors of autumn begin to transform our parks and trails, our commitment to providing high quality programs and services remains stronger than ever.

We will close out another memorable summer with our Last Splash Event before turning our attention to an exciting lineup of fall events. From the return of youth sports programs to community favorites like the annual Obstacle Course Race (OCR) and Monster’s Bash, there are countless opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active, connect with neighbors, and create long lasting memories.

This summer also marked an important milestone for the District as the Board of Commissioners approved the 2026 Comprehensive Strategic Master Plan. This innovative plan will serve as a roadmap for the next decade, guiding improvements to our operations, programs, services, facilities, and capital projects. This innovative vision will help us strengthen our parks, programs, and facilities while continuing to meet the evolving needs of the communities we proudly serve.

We are proud to share that since 2019, the Park District has successfully secured nearly $1.6 million in Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) granting support to improvements at Burning Bush, Aspen, Willow Trails, and Tamarack Trails Parks. These investments have allowed us

To become the recreational choice in everything you do.

to revitalize park spaces, expand recreational opportunities, and improve amenities throughout the district. Looking ahead, we plan to submit another OSLAD grant application this fall for Sycamore Trails Park, with the goal of completing significant park improvements in 2027.

In addition, we are actively pursuing a grant through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to enhance lighting at Willow Trails Park. We will also begin evaluating and defining future capital improvements for Weiss Community Center, ensuring that this important community asset continues to meet the evolving needs of our residents.

River Trails Park District proudly serves the communities of Prospect Heights and Mount Prospect. Together, we aim to build a future filled with opportunity, connection, and recreation. These are truly exciting times for our district, and we invite you to be part of the journey. Be sure to stay connected with us throughout the year by following us on Instagram and by liking us on Facebook for the latest program information, event announcements, park updates, and community news.

As naturalist and author John Burroughs once said: “I go to nature to be soothed and health, and to have my senses put in order.”

River Trails Park District | Board of Commissioners

We invite you to learn more about your park district by attending the Board meetings. Meetings are held at the Administrative Building, 401 E. Camp McDonald Rd., Prospect Heights. For more information, please call 847.788.0551.

INVESTING IN PARKS, RECREATION, AND COMMUNITY

How Much of Your Property Tax Dollar Supports

River Trails Park District?

A Small Share with a Big Community Impact

River Trails Park District receives approximately $6.50 of every $100 in property taxes. These funds support the parks, trails, facilities, programs, and recreational opportunities that contribute to a healthy, active, and connected community.

INVESTING IN PARKS, RECREATION, AND COMMUNITY

The River Trails Park District’s 2026 Budget

The River Trails Park District’s 2026 budget of $11.5 million supports the operation and maintenance of parks, trails, facilities, recreation programs, open spaces, accessibility initiatives, and capital improvements while meeting the district’s financial obligations to the community.

INVESTING IN PARKS, RECREATION, AND COMMUNITY

Leveraging Grant Funding for Community Improvements

River Trails Park District has successfully secured $1.588 million in Illinois OSLAD (Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development) grant funding to improve local parks and recreational amenities.

Recent OSLAD grants awarded to the District include:

2019 Burning Bush Park: $400,000

2020 Aspen Trails Park: $400,000

2022 Willow Trails Park: $400,000

2024 Tamarack Trails Park: $388,000

These competitive state grants help fund park improvements while reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers. By leveraging outside funding sources, River Trails Park District continues to enhance parks, recreational facilities, and community amenities for residents throughout the District.

River Trails Park District Capital Projects

River Trails Park District continues to invest in maintaining and improving its parks, facilities, and infrastructure to enhance the resident experience.

Recent capital projects include pool supply line and irrigation improvements at Rob Roy Golf Course in 2023, followed by a new roof at Rob Roy and the purchase of two new buses in 2024

In 2025, planned improvements included renovations to the Weiss Community Center lobby, fitness center, and gymnasium, installation of new pool heaters, improvements to the Rob Roy cart barn, and upgrades to the Willow Trails basketball court

Looking ahead to 2026, the district completed a new pool bathhouse floor, and Burning Bush roof, improved the Rob Roy parking lot, and enhanced parks and facilities through landscaping and lighting upgrades.

These investments help ensure that River Trails Park District facilities remain safe, accessible, and enjoyable for residents today and for future generations.

EARLY CHILDHOOD & PRESCHOOL

Trail Blazers

Preschool Philosophy

Our Trail Blazers program is a developmentally appropriate program designed to help children grow and learn in a stimulating and nurturing environment. We look at the ‘whole child’ including intellectual, social, emotional, physical and creative growth. Children develop differently in each space so the curriculum is carefully planned to include activities that help each child learn and grow in all areas. Children will be introduced to the basic academic and social skills of preschool and will be encouraged to develop problem–solving skills, self–confidence and creativity. Activities will include math, science, language skills, art, motor movement, music and dramatic play. All areas of each child’s growth are important and we provide opportunities for intellectual, social, physical and creative growth. Activities are presented in individual, group, structured and unstructured settings and Jolly Phonics curriculum is used for kindergarten readiness. Our goal is for each child to develop a love of learning, tools to continue to learn and a positive image of himself or herself.

PARKOUR

550 Business Center Drive | Mount Prospect, IL 60056

Parkour Philosophy

At River Trails Park District, we believe movement is a fundamental expression of human potential. As the first park district in Illinois to offer a dedicated indoor Parkour facility, we are committed to creating an environment where participants can safely explore, challenge, and redefine their physical capabilities.

Parkour is more than an activity. It is a philosophy of overcoming obstacles through creativity, discipline, and perseverance. Drawing from elements of gymnastics, street acrobatics, free running, martial arts, and functional fitness, Parkour teaches individuals to adapt, solve problems, and move confidently through their environment.

Our program emphasizes progressive skill development, personal achievement, and respect for both oneself and others. Through running, jumping, climbing, rolling, tumbling, strength training, and obstacle navigation, participants build physical fitness, mental resilience, and self-confidence. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to learn, grow, and discover what is possible. Progress reports are given after each session to participant.

Using specialized amenities including a foam pit, climbing wall, warp wall, walking beams, and jump boxes, we provide a safe and supportive space where participants of all abilities can develop strength, agility, coordination, and courage. We celebrate effort over perfection, progress over comparison, and the belief that every obstacle can be overcome with practice and determination.

At River Trails Park District, Parkour is not simply about getting from one point to another. It is about empowering individuals to move through life with confidence, adaptability, and purpose.

Golf Courses will have a Partner Rate Mon–Fri only payment tier. Although the agreement may result in an increase in the number of potential users, each park district will continue to maintain its individual identity and utilize monies available to it at present tax rates. Residents always receive priority registration within their “home district” while enjoying the added benefit of enrolling in a “partner district’s” class or program at resident rates.
