Renovations celebrated at “Ribs & Ragtime” By Jonathan Martin

For the 10th year, Amherstburg Freedom Museum (AFM) celebrated African-Canadian heritage with Ribs & Ragtime. Hundreds gathered for the sold-out fundraiser. Windsor-based jazz band Black Orchid provided the tunes and volunteers served the catered food. Due to the number of attendees, AFM president Monty Logan said the event underwent a reconfiguration. “We had to move things around to make room,” he said. “The band had to face the other way this year and we had to move some tables around.” The most noticeable of the changes was the placement of a large, plastic cheque just in front of the band. AFM received $119,700 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for earlier this year. Saturday, Logan showed off where that money went. “We got rid of the drop ceiling, got rid of the clutter, added new lighting,” he said. “Essentially, this capital infrastructure funding allowed us to better utilize the place on the inside.” On the outside, AFM has earmarked funding for roof replacement. The roof is made of cedar, though, and this spring has been too wet to execute the
plan so far. Logan did note that the museum’s log cabin has received new siding. “The impact of this Ontario Trillium Foundation grant cannot be underestimated,” said Mary-Katherine Whelan, curator/administrator. “This grant has allowed much needed renovations to be made. These renovations ensure the safeguarding of the museum’s collections, historic properties and permanent galleries, all of which focus on presenting and preserving the history of Underground Railway in Canada and legacies of those Freedom Seekers and their descendants who built their lives in Essex County during and after that period. The OTF Grant allows the museum to continue sharing this history and educating the public on this often overlooked and important historic movement in Canada and Essex County.” Amherstburg’s deputy mayor, Leo Meloche, was one of the event’s hundreds of attendees. “Museums are very important to the fabric of our society,” he said. “We use historical information, the knowledge of where we’ve been, when we try to figure out where we want to head together as a society.”
