An Introduction and Welcome from Jami Whitmer, High School Director

Dear Riverstone community: You are invited to learn more about our graduating class in this installment of Meet the Seniors. In these pages, you will learn more about our amazing Class of 2022, and hear from each senior firsthand as they as they talk about their experiences at Riverstone and their journeys to come. Several of our seniors have been with us for their whole academic journey: Alease, Caroline, George, Mac, Kaija, and Salma joined us in Kindergarten. Others, like Walker, Edo, Eliot, Raquel and Molly we have only had the pleasure of working with for one year. No matter when in their journey they joined us, we have been honored to be a part of it. We are happy to honor the class of 2022 and excited to see where they go on the next stage of their journeys. Please learn more about them in the following pages.

Caroline T. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? I haven't decided yet. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 12 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The accessibility of the art of Jenny Saville vs. Frida Kahlo and why Jenny Saville Executed It Better. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? My most meaningful CAS experience was helping OneStone to organize and plan the EmpowHER event. I think this experience helped me work together with others and become a better leader in the process. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I've always struggled in math and over the years i've definitley seen myself improving with the help of my teachers and my tutor. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Being a part of SAGA club and making friends with people in all different grades. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel very well prepared for my college classes and I know the importance of time management. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't procrastinate. You might think you aren't stressed but you will be. Don't take things too seriously, remember to have balance between school work and having fun. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Challenging. Enjoyable. Enriching. 3

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Do your work on time and play soccer. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Playing Co-ed High school Soccer with the Swaghounds. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Small class sizes. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Outdoor trips. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I can complete work quickly. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't take it too seriously and make friends outside of Riverstone. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Unique. Illuminating. Tough.

Stephanie F. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Smith College How many years have you been at Riverstone? 3 What is the title of your Extended Essay? An analysis of the effects of technology and social media on social and political power in the modern age. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Working as a junior counselor at Gold Arrow Camp. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I transferred part way through 10th grade. I had to make all new friends and get comfortable in a group that had been together for years. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Going on a backpacking trip in the Eagle Caps wilderness in the beginning of twelfth grade. Debating the importance of money and life in relation to The Visit in English class. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I have learned a ton of skills in the analysis and creation of text. These skills will help me succeed in college and in the workforce. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Always communicate with your teachers and don't be afraid to ask questions. No matter how silly school traditions or advisory activities seem, take part because they create great memories. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Community. Growth. Exploration.

Salma S. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Duke University How many years have you been at Riverstone? 12 What is the title of your Extended Essay? An evaluative analysis of Turkey’s international relations with the West, post Erdogan and AKP (2002). What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Working towards, and receiving, my Wilderness First Responder certification. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Balancing my work and managing my stress levels. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? My first favorite memory is every outdoor trip ever. They are truly all amazing and full of laughter. My second favorite are all the memories you make during the small moments in class and the interactions you have with your teachers. Those are some of my fondest. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I think Riverstone has prepared me in so many ways: managing big workloads, teaching me the meaning of hard work, and how to enjoy myself in even the toughest and most stressful situations. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? First, take advantage of the resources you have around you: everyone wants you to succeed. Second, foster the family you create with your classmates and fill your experiences with positivity and happiness. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Outdoors. Colin R. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of Utah How many years have you been at Riverstone? 2 What is the title of your Extended Essay? IDBM and Sustaining Salmon Runs in Bristol Bay. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Weeding the park. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Making new friends, communicating and speaking to people, making my way through the IB physics course, operating a digital audio workstation for music, and writing the IA's and Extended Essay. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Discussing philosophy with Mr. U in his ToK class, and playing cards with classmates. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I'm more prepared to handle longer essay and research papers due to the amount of practice I received. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Try not to stress about your workload because in the end you will manage to finish it. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Challenging. Interesting. Unique.

Aidan D. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of Denver How many years have you been at Riverstone? 9 What is the title of your Extended Essay? In what ways does present-day moral character reflect the Confucian and Daoist concepts of dao, de, wu wei, and ren? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Sound tech at a local church (on-going) What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Balancing the crazy amount of school work with my job, social life, relationships, and hobbies. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Playing frisbee and predator with another school during the Hells Canyon trip and a bunch of people ended up getting stung by nettles. All the ensemble performances I've done at Riverstone. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Balancing workload and getting stuff in on time. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't complain because complaining won't get you anywhere. Sleep when you can. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Tough but Good.

Derek L. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Colorado School Of Mines How many years have you been at Riverstone? 13 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Study of the Rocky Mountains and Climate Change. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Volunteering at a camp teaching kids about fly fishing and sustainability. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? My personal challenges at Riverstone have been to adapt to undesirable situations while on outdoor trips. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? One of my biggest highlights was the grand gulch backpacking trip, and my other highlight was making it to the basketball state championship. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I think that I am prepared for the next part of my journey because I have learned to manage extracurriculars and my schoolwork. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? One piece of advice that I have is to never get behind. If you get behind it is hard to catch up again. Another piece of advice is to just have fun, there is a lot of work but it is also very possible to keep having fun. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Community. Challenging. Extensive. 10

Ryan W. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Colorado School Of Mines How many years have you been at Riverstone? 7 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The Reliability of Mental Math and a Comparison to Paper Math What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Running the yearbook club has been my most important CAS experience because it is the first time I have taken a leadership role in a club. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? My first day at Riverstone when I knew no one was one of the hardest things because I was unsure of what I was walking into. Now I have a great group of friends that I enjoy spending time with and will have forever. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? I have enjoyed the amazingness of HL Math/Physics with Mr. Moreno and my classmates that were crazy enough to take two of the hardest HL’s at the school. We grew closer as we used “the smart parts of our brain” to learn “the fun stuff.” Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Riverstone has taught me how to think outside the box, how to succeed in the face of fear and stress, and how to put the right amount of effort towards tasks. Also, I learned the benefit of having relationships with my teachers as they are knowledgeable in their subject and are more than willing to help us succeed in the class and in life. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Growth, Rewarding, Happiness 11

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Pick things that you are interested in for your classes and assessments that come later at Riverstone because you will spend a lot of time in these classes and on these assessments. Join extracurricular activities; Riverstone is a highly academic school, but take time to do activities you enjoy with your friends. Meet the Seniors, Riverstone Class of 2022


Mac W. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? High Point University How many years have you been at Riverstone? 13 What is the title of your Extended Essay? To What Extent Did the Dalai Lama Influence the Popularity of Buddhism in the United States? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Taking my golf team to the state tournament in 2021. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? The amount of studying and constant workflow in the DP program. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? I really enjoyed Grand Gulch in 2019 as well as the river trip in 7th grade. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I learned how to be polite. I also learned that good people skills can really help make a good impression on people that I meet. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Get your first draft of your EE done before summer of junior year. Spend 20 minutes making an outline so you can write your essay way faster. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Enlightening. Challenging. Rewarding.

Universidad Francisco De Vitoria How many years have you been at Riverstone? 1 What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Living in a dormitory. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Winter formal, Spring Break, Thanksgiving. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I know I can handle a serious workload. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Patience and open minded. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Different. New. Edoardo T. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Politecnico di Torino How many years have you been at Riverstone? 1 What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? The language barrier earlier this year and getting strong connections with my American peers. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Math and Physics Class with Moreno but in generally every moment spent at school. Camp Night with Seniors and Halloween. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I'm way more open-minded and independent. This experience made me do activities I could never imagine doing back in Italy. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Never say no to new stuff coming up and try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Freedom. Nature. Revolutionary.

Eliot L. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? I haven't decided yet. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 1 What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Understand the "Riverstone spirit." What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Definitely soccer seasons. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I'll definitely do more backpacking now. I also became more friendly and open-minded. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Be nice (it isn't that easy with everyone) and relax. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Social life. Fun. Sleep.

Andrew E. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Whitworth University How many years have you been at Riverstone? 7 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Themes of Oppression in George Orwell’s 1984. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? My time as a JRS at a summer camp. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I have had plenty of challenges during my time at Riverstone, from my first backpacking trip when I discovered that I was not a backpacking person, to struggling in Art, my worst class and regretting it after a semester of it in the DP. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? I've loved the sports. From organized basketball in the winter to pickup games at lunch year round. I've also enjoyed trying something new with ToK, especially my first year of it with Mr. Udesen. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I'm a bit better at organization and I know I can handle a large workload, I just can't stress about it too much. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't procrastinate, especially with the Personal Project or Extended Essay because I did with both and it sucked. Also, enjoy PE while it lasts, it's fun and easy and I missed it after going into 11th grade. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Difficult. Enlightening. Fun. Camilla V. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? I haven't decided yet. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 1 What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Making new friends, learning to live in a different culture, learning English and growing personally. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Winter dance and camping trip. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I know I can handle a serious workload. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Always try to jump in to make friends without shame and do not expect people to always come to you first. Try to enjoy every single moment. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Interested. Adventurous. Useful.

Cinematic Elements and the Development of a Film’s Protagonist. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? BLM volunteer work in the Owyhee Mountains (with my Dad). What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Time management and public speaking. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Rafting trip on the Main Salmon River (8th grade). Backpacking in Grand Gulch (9th grade). Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I now know how to effectively manage my time and balance my workload. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Cherish your outdoor trips. Don't wait til the last minute to complete assignments. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Meaningful. Busy. Outdoor-oriented.

Will R. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of Texas, Austin How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Applications of Decision theory in Gambles, Analysis of a modified version of the Monty Hall Problem. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Teaching Robotics. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Getting 7+ hours of sleep. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Pool party at Derek's or Camp Party. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. It completely transformed me into what I am today. Upon almostgraduating from Riverstone I have become a much more proficient in every subject, I have become a harder worker, and have become much more resilient. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Do only what you want to do and do it to the best of your ability. (Dorm kids in mind) Buy a shower luffa. It will save you a bunch on body wash. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Not too bad.

Soloriana T. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? John Cabot University (Rome, Italy) How many years have you been at Riverstone? 6 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The Effect of Cymatic Frequencies on E. coli Microbial Growth. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Either participating in a one-on-one plant medicine mentorship with a renowned master herbalist, which I was able to use to contribute to my community or volunteering in inner city New York with the homeless population. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Time management with long term projects such as my Personal Project or Extended Essay. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Grand gulch (striking views and a wonderful opportunity to get to know my peers). The beginning of school via Zoom and all the funny memories which accompanied it. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I understand the value of hard work and self-responsibility. Additionally, Riverstone has nurtured my love for learning as well as fostered my ability to think on my feet and outside of the box. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? enriching, challenging, unique

What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Take advantage of the small class sizes and more personal teacher-student relationships. Remain close and connected with your class (these will likely be your peers through graduation and they can help you through the difficulties of the IB and even your own personal struggles) . Doing work in subjects that weren't my favorite. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Trips, Spring Break, Winter formal. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I know how to handle a serious workload. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Be open minded and have patience. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Different. New. Excited.

Zaynab E. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? The College of Idaho How many years have you been at Riverstone? 2 What is the title of your Extended Essay? How reliable is Euler’s Theorem in providing a secure public key algorithm called RSA in cryptography? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Spirit Squad/Cheerleading team. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Transferring to Riverstone in the middle of the pandemic. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Making art with Mr. Udesen, and getting life-advice from Jane Armstrong. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I became a fast English writer, learned communication skills and how to be more responsible with words when living in the dorm. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Teachers are your friends. Get closer to them, and you'll learn about not just the subject but life. Deborah T. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? I haven't decided yet. How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? How do Carol Ann Duffy’s alternative versions of Bible stories prompt the reader to consider multiple perspectives about women’s experiences and roles across time? What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Coaching a kids basketball camp over the summer and learning that I have a passion for coaching. It was so much fun to watch the kids just soak up everything you were teaching them, it reminded me that we all have a ton of potential. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Working in an environment that is very different than that at public schools, adjusting to the IB from the public school system was quite challenging. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I feel that Riverstone does a really good job of ensuring that our heavy workload allows us to be prepared in time and stress management and by creating a way for us to learn this in highschool as opposed to college. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Finish your first draft EE before the summer and try to get your CAS done during the summer. Remember that high school is fun, go enjoy the social part of your life, since not everything is about school. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Challenging. Adventurous. Fun. 23

What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? One of my favorite things at Riverstone has been the outdoor trips. playing sports, and making new friends through these experiences. My favorite memory on a trip would be the Grand Gulch trip my freshmen year. We had been hiking all day and completed the hike by lunchtime so we decided to hike further so we could rest more. We got to a section of the hike where there was water up to our shins, it was cold, wet and overall miserable. Everyone was quiet except for Kyla and Darci who were singing trail songs sounding happy as can be, and at the time it was really annoying but looking back on it, they made the trip more enjoyable. Love in Relation to Drugs and the Brain’s Reward System: An Examination of Love as a Chemical Addiction through the Narrow and Broad Views of Addiction. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Writing The Book of Questions: College and Life. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Keeping up with my online HL IB Psychology class. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? I loved Mr. Neef's lectures-- he was truly one of the most intelligent teachers I've ever met. I also loved the class camping trip that the grade organized (apart from the outdoor trips Riverstone already has) Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I definitely have learned what it means to have zero social life and work extremely hard. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Spread out your studying for science courses so you won't have to cram right before IB exams. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Unique.Time-Consuming. Frustrating.

Kyla C. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of Arkansas How many years have you been at Riverstone? 4 What is the title of your Extended Essay? To what extent does livestock grazing on Western rangelands mitigate wildfire risk and impact. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? Camp Counselor! What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Adjusting to packed schedules, learning to actually study. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Going to state for basketball and all the lunches spent making memories with friends. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I know I can handle writing long papers, and how to advocate for any help I may need. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1.) Find your people, they will support you in all you do. 2.) Do not be afraid to make your voice heard. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Quirky. Engaging. Challenging.

Alease L. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? Colorado University, Boulder How many years have you been at Riverstone? 13 What is the title of your Extended Essay? The Pipeline: From Covid-19 to Socialism What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? My most meaningful CAS experience was the progression of learning how to use my body correctly after a back fracture. The process taught me a lot about grit and perseverance. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Riverstone and my grade specifically, is like a family. I’ve known and seen the majority of these kids turn into adults and change over the years. But, as wonderful as that’s been, we fight like siblings. Learning to get over things and deal with them because you cant change things has been a challenge. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Riverstone taught me how to function and communicate well with people you may not particularly like. It taught me to get over our differences, in order to get the task at hand completed. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? 1. It doesn’t matter if you think you and your friends are too different than the rest of the groups in your grade to get along. Reach out, plan grade functions. I promise you won’t regret it. 2. Befriend Brittany Roper, she’s there for school things, but truly there for anything. She notices when you're off and she’s one of the teachers that truly cares about you as a person, not just as a student in her class. She's also probably the coolest person I’ve ever met, so if you don’t go to her with personal or academic problems, let her tell you her funny and wild stories about her life. 26

What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Family. Crazy. Baffling.

Nikola N. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of Arizona How many years have you been at Riverstone? 11 What is the title of your Extended Essay? How did the Soil pH change in the different biomes in Boise. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? Academics at Riverstone were at times challenging, however they pushed me to be a better learner. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? My first answer would be going to the state finals with the basketball team in 2021. It was amazing. The Fall trip my class took in 2021 at the beginning of our senior year, I loved seeing the Oregon wilderness and it was great bonding with my class. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. Trusting the system that Riverstone has in place that insured I had the tools I need to accomplish that I need for college. Riverstone hasn’t always had programs in place for learners like me, and I hope they continue to make strides in the right direction to accommodate all students and various learning styles. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Always talk to your teachers and don’t go out for lunch every day or you will end up with no money! What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Challenging. Different. Exciting. 27

Hailey W. Which college/university will you attend after graduation? University of San Diego How many years have you been at Riverstone? 8 What is the title of your Extended Essay? Differentiation of themes in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Ibi Zoboi's remix, Pride. What was your most important or meaningful CAS experience? My most meaningful CAS experience would be setting up and planning the Empow(HER) event for 3 years in a row. This experience changed my life and taught me how to be a leader. What have your (personal) challenges been at Riverstone? I would say not being able to go on many of the outdoor trips because of medical issues. This made me feel like I missed a lot of the bonding for our class. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? Playing volleyball with my advisory and being able to play in ensembles throughout my years at Riverstone. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I believe that my essay writing skills have definitely gotten better. I will be able to take this with college with me. What are two pieces of advice that you want to give to other students at Riverstone? Don't take things too seriously and be yourself. What are three words that describe your experience at Riverstone? Trying to overachieve in every class I took. What are one or two of your favorite memories or highlights of your journey at Riverstone? All outdoor trips were unforgettable. Tell us the ways you feel that you are prepared for the next part of your journey. I developed better time management and I can handle more stress now.
