AN INSPIRED JOURNEY Dear Riverstone Community, I am pleased to deliver Riverstone’s 2018-19 Annual Report. No other document captures the essence of our fabulous community as we educate tomorrow’s generation of global thinkers. Our Annual Report is a report card of the prior year, a time in which a reasonable person would not have contemplated a global pandemic. Our current crisis makes it even more important to look back at our history and contemplate our school’s future. In the past few months we have begun to rewrite our next Strategic Plan while reflecting on the last plan written nearly six years ago. Although the last Strategic Plan encompassed nearly six years of growth, 2018-19 was particularly successful. We achieved a record enrollment of 370 students representing 48 different countries. A larger student body will lead to better cultural diversity and a broader financial base for future educational opportunities. I can’t overemphasize the importance of keeping the school on sound financial footing. This report highlights the advances we have made in reducing our operational shortfall. The longterm success of our school depends on continued investments in our infrastructure and our most important asset: our teachers. We had a particularly successful Annual Auction which raised funds for teacher professional development and a much-needed school bus. The 2018-19 school year ended with the addition of Dr. Jeff Paulson to lead our school through its next phase. We thank Dr. Todd Horn who set the table for Jeff to succeed. With one semester under his belt, I can attest to Jeff’s highly successful entry. With his inclusionary style and highly responsive work ethic, he has already made his mark. Our school is poised for excellence under his leadership. Thank you for reading this important report, and contemplating how you can invest in Idaho’s best private school. A SCHOOL ON THE MOVE What an honor it is to serve Riverstone International School. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the families, teachers, students, and school leaders who have played a role in getting us to where we are today. I thank Dr. Todd Horn for stepping in as an interim for the 2018-19 school year, who did an admirable job replacing Bob Carignan after his 17 years of devoted service to Riverstone and provided a solid bridge to my arrival in July 2019. My first six months at Riverstone have had a true impact on me. It’s impressive what a group of committed parents and faculty can accomplish when they work together toward a common vision. And that vision has been realized: Riverstone has shaped some of the brightest, most well-rounded minds I have yet to come across in my career. These young people are difference-makers and impactful. Truly, they are experiencing and embarking on courageous journeys and building purposeful lives. This has been a year of continuing to improve systems, expand facilities, develop policies, reorganize leadership, and work toward financial sustainability. Under Tom Mahoney’s leadership and guidance, the Board of Trustees provides exemplary wisdom and visionary thinking which is confidence-building. Truly, Riverstone International School is in good hands with such strong leadership. Enrollment continues to grow, and student programs have never been stronger. As a school, we continue to improve our communications in effort to more inclusive and responsive. We continue to emphasize “the Riverstone Way” and hope that this annual report will further that goal. Thank you for supporting such a wonderful and inspirational school.

EXCEPTIONAL EXAM RESULTS The Class of 2019 had an 82% pass rate on the International Baccalaureate exams, where the average Diploma score was 29 points. SAT and ACT scores were also well beyond both state and national averages. Riverstone alumni are prepared, and thrive at colleges and universities locally, nationally, and around the world.
RECORD ENROLLMENT 2018-19 was a banner year. 370 students were enrolled in Preschool through Grade 12, our largest student body to date. We also saw record diversity as 48 countries were represented in the Riverstone community, fostering a vibrant school environment unique to our region.
BUILDING OUR FUTURE Generous gifts to past endowment campaigns have supported Riverstone’s strategic growth and enabled us to develop Idaho’s #1 Residential Boarding program, Riverstone House, where 30 residential students live, study, and experience life in beautiful Boise, Idaho.

ASSESSMENT SCORES To ensure that our students are prepared to live, work, and thrive on a global stage, Riverstone conducts international and national benchmark tests for select grades starting in Grade 3. We use these tests to supplement classroom assessments to provide both subjective and objective measurements of progress and identify areas for curriculum growth.

NEXT STEPS: THE CLASS OF 2019 The focus of Riverstone’s college counseling process is to identify “best fit” colleges for each student. Ultimately, our graduates have many great colleges and universities from; 50% of the class received merit-based scholarships that averaged $18,000 per year. In total, the Class of 2019 was offered a total of $3.2M in financial aid packages. THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE The International Baccalaureate® (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum, the IB Programme allows its graduates to fulfill requirements that are recognized worldwide. Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization are eligible to teach the Diploma Program philosophy and to register candidates for examination. As Idaho’s first International Baccalaureate® World School, Riverstone strives to fulfill the mission of the IB organization to its fullest capacity.
Riverstone International School has the highest Diploma Programme pass rate in the state of Idaho, and for the past four years, has surpassed both the United States and global averages. We do not require applicants to take entrance exams that may prove their ability to do well on standardized exams.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION (PA) Riverstone International School is a non-profit, independent school that relies on the generous support of families, friends, staff, and community organizations to supplement tuition revenue and provide support for our programs through volunteerism. Our parents volunteer as PA officers, room parents, fundraising committee members, classroom assistants, field trip chaperones, subject area experts, coaches, and more. The PA kicked off the 2018-19 school year with the “BooHoo/ Yahoo!” Coffee following Convocation and an Ice Cream Social later that afternoon. The group also continued to build community with the second BINGO night, destined to become a cornerstone in the Riverstone annual calendar. Other perennial successes were the Spring Carnival and Meet the Seniors, as well as the annual Pumpkin Patch and Book Sale. Last but not least, the PA recognized Riverstone staff throughout the year with the continuation of the elaborate Merci Lunch program and an over-the-top Staff Appreciation Week complete with a cocktail party, gifts and tokens of appreciation.

THE ANNUAL FUND Annual Fund gifts sustain every single aspect of the unique educational experience at Riverstone and support the school as a whole. The funds raised during the Annual Fund campaign are used during the school year for immediate impact. The 2018-19 Annual Fund campaign received over $229,698.65 in gifts. We also reached 92% participation from parents, staff, and trustees. Our high level of participation is reflected in every grant application we write and reinforces to granting organizations that we have a history of strong community support.

THE ANNUAL AUCTION: FUND-A-NEED FUND-A-NEED: RIVERSTONE CONNECTED 2019’s Fund-A-Need was a thematic umbrella for two items we desperately needed: funding for faculty professional development, and a second school bus. Our Fund-A-Need goal was $75,000; you helped us get to $89,500!

“I had an incredibly beneficial experience this past summer in Vancouver, BC at an IB conference for Language and Literature instructors. The IB curriculum is incredibly challenging and always under revision to improve, and it’s the teacher’s responsibility to stay current. I was shown in excellent detail how the changes could make the course better for students. Also, meeting teachers from all over the world who are teaching the same subject gave me a much deeper appreciation for the IB and its role, globally. A SECOND SCHOOL BUS Thanks to your contributions, we were also able to connect your children to more field trips, outdoor experiences, athletics, and competitions with better (and more efficient) transportation. A second school bus had been in order for some time, and we were supplementing our growing transportation needs with bus vendors such as First Student and Caldwell Transportation. However these expenses were adding up to become much costlier than acquiring a second school bus. We purchased a sturdy 2008 Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2 School Bus. Working with a trusted local reseller, we recently purchased this well-maintained, reconditioned bus with a Mercedes diesel engine that's built for the long haul. As a fancy bonus, this bus also has automatic snow chains that will save our driver(s) time and exposure to the winter elements. Bottom line? You bought us a bus–A Bus for All of Us.

In January 2015, Riverstone International School embarked upon a two-year campaign to build an endowment called “Navigating Forward” led by Campaign Co-Chairs, Kurt & Treacy Liebich.
