ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18
AN INSPIRED JOURNEY A typical Annual Report will highlight a school’s mission and impact, thank volunteers and supporters, and make a case for giving. While this year’s report encompasses all of the above, we also plan to highlight what made 2017-18 unique in the broader history of Riverstone, with its share of successes and challenges.
Dear Riverstone Community, As our 2014–2019 Strategic Plan nears its conclusion, I am filled with pride at how much we’ve accomplished. Thanks to a superb faculty, we strengthened academic excellence from Preschool through Grade 12. Our International Baccalaureate exam pass rates exceeded 90% last year, well above the 78% global average. We strategically managed enrollment to draw students of (a record) 43 nationalities, and also introduced a boarding program that has enhanced the educational experience for families living abroad. With your help, we raised an endowment that set the stage for long-term sustainability and made Riverstone eligible for $2 million in Malone Scholarship funds for high academic achievers with demonstrated need. With all of our successes, we were aware that 2017-18 would be an inflection point for our school. Former Head of School Bob Carignan’s departure sparked a leadership search with a top-ranked recruiting firm. We hired two of the best education leaders in the world, Todd Horn, Ed.D., as Transition Head of School for 2018-2019, and Dr. Jeff Paulson arriving in July 2019. Although we ended last school year with a budget shortfall, we have been able to refinance long- and shortterm debt and streamline operations. The Board of Trustees and staff are working hard to set the stage for future growth under Dr. Paulson’s leadership next summer. Our faculty and staff work every day to deliver on the school’s mission to enable our students to lead purposeful lives. Riverstone inspires our children to seek understanding, respect themselves and others, and actively contribute to their communities, and this quality of education is why I invest in Riverstone’s long-term success. As you review statistics and financials encased in this report, I challenge you to ask yourself: what about Riverstone compels you to invest? Best wishes for an inspired journey.

A SCHOOL ON THE MOVE Dear Riverstone families, What an honor it is to serve Riverstone International School at this formative time. All of us owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the families, teachers, students, and school leaders who have played a role in getting us to where we are today. In particular, I thank Bob Carignan for his 17 years of devoted service. It’s impressive what a group of committed parents and faculty can make happen when they work together toward a common vision. And that vision has been realized: Riverstone has shaped some of the brightest, most well-rounded minds I have yet to come across in my career. These kids are going places, embarking on courageous journeys and building purposeful lives. However, like many young independent schools, Riverstone is experiencing some life-cycle challenges as it works to improve systems, expand facilities, develop policies, and reorganize leadership. This is what much of my time is focused on. While enrollment is up a whopping 8% in 2018-19 and student programs have never been stronger, we are working to improve our communication and be more responsive. Hopefully this annual report will further that goal. Thank you for supporting this important school that means so much to all of us.
TODD HORN, ED.D. Transition Head of School
EXCEPTIONAL EXAM RESULTS Our class of 2018 had a record 90% pass rate on the International Baccalaureate exams, where the average Diploma score was 31 points, above the 2017 global average of 29.9. SAT and ACT scores were also well beyond both state and national averages. Riverstone alumni are prepared, and thrive at colleges and universities both locally and around the world.
RECORD ENROLLMENT 2017-18 was a banner year: 335 students were enrolled in Preschool through Grade 12, our largest student body to date. We also saw record diversity as 43 countries were represented in the Riverstone community, fostering a vibrant school environment unique to our region.
BUILDING OUR FUTURE Generous gifts to past endowment campaigns have supported Riverstone’s strategic growth and enabled us to develop Idaho’s #1 Residential Boarding program, Riverstone House, where 30 residential students live, study, and experience life in beautiful Boise, Idaho.

The financial overview of Riverstone mirrors that of many young schools. From grassroots origins an energizing vision emerges, galvanizes a community, and in the early years is fueled by improvisation, volunteers, and boot-strap creativity. As enrollment grows the capital needs of facilities and program expansion significantly outstrip revenue and the school takes on some debt. Concurrently, young schools face the financial challenges of securing experienced outside leadership and strengthening management systems. Effective leadership is essential to growth, mission fulfillment and the long-term health of the school. Then, at a certain inflection point, enrollment revenue and fundraising catches up and the school has the ability to pay off the debt and become financially sustainable. This early institutional life cycle story is shared by almost all great schools. In 2017-18 Riverstone International School had a budget shortfall of $347,000. This was due to a series of extraordinary expenses: consolidation of debt, integration of new boarding program, consultant and hiring costs associated with securing experienced leadership (transition and permanent Heads of School), facilities expansion, and reorganization of the administrative leadership team. Current improvement in business systems requires some investment but will yield greater transparency and improved decision making. 2017-18 was an inflection point and while we didn’t miss a beat in terms of the student experience, we did underperform in administrative areas. Stewardship of philanthropic support was one of these. To our many generous supporters we apologize that our heartfelt appreciation for your support has not been adequately demonstrated. We now have a dedicated Director of Development so we can more effectively plan and honor those who step up to support our extraordinary programs, students, and faculty. Making a dream come true can be an uneven process, but the outcomes more than justify the growing pains. Our record enrollment, increased endowment, maturing boarding program, strong reputation, and various cost saving measures all indicate that our current 2018-19 budget will balance, and we anticipate a small surplus in 2019-20.
