PEGGY KEEPS HER INDEPENDENCE

Help for Daily Living You allow patients to reclaim their independence Peggy Roberts has endured more pain in the last 20 years than most people do in a lifetime. RiverStone Health Foundation friends make it possible for patients like Peggy to persevere and maintain a positive outlook on life.

At a young age, Peggy was bullied because of the curve in her spine. Scoliosis screening wasn’t provided in schools like it is today, so she dealt with a 45-degree curve in her back throughout childhood.

The CPR fund covered the cost of bathroom equipment that gives her the ability to bathe safely. She is grateful for “being able to shower on my own – I missed that more than anything.”

Peggy enjoyed working and would trade a hard job over disability any day. Very soon, she faces permanent paralysis and life in a wheelchair if she doesn’t have spine surgery.

Although she has many limitations, her outlook remains optimistic.

By 17, Peggy was a confident, selfsufficient woman managing severe scoliosis.

By age 30, she was unable to work and at risk of paralysis. For a single mother accustomed to handling whatever life threw at her, the pain was beyond her limits. It was demoralizing asking her kids for help bathing or walking to the mailbox. Peggy had lost her independence.

Watching my children watch me suffer was the hardest part.

Peggy Roberts She has received RiverStone Health Home Care Services for four years. Therapists have paid her many home visits to help with overall strength and mobility. More recently, Peggy’s RiverStone Health case manager, Tim, connected her to the RiverStone Health Foundation’s CPR fund, an emergency response to a healthcare need. He knew Peggy needed financial assistance.

Tim helped Peggy adapt her home to fit her lifestyle.

Peggy is working hard to improve her bone density in order to receive the needed surgery.

Support from RiverStone Health staff and the CPR fund have given her the confidence she needs to be the self-sufficient woman she once was.

Thanks to friends of RiverStone Health Foundation, Peggy is discovering independence again and the priceless gift of hope.
