FOUNDATIONS At the heart of The Campaign for Neurosciences, we will develop and enhance our services in three foundational areas.

THE RIVERSIDE INSTITUTE OF NEUROSCIENCES

Bringing together neurologists, neurosurgeons, primary care physicians, specialists and other staff, the Riverside Institute of Neurosciences will house Centers of Excellence in neurology and neurosurgery. Our teams of clinicians and team members will provide multidisciplinary care with innovative treatments, management of complex neurological conditions and resources for families and caregivers.

THE MARTHA W. GOODSON CENTER

The Martha W. Goodson Center is an innovative and exciting concept in healthy aging connecting individuals facing the challenges of aging or caregiving with expert care and support. As part of the Riverside network of care, we believe in an evidence-based approach that provides research and education at every level. From initial symptoms to diagnosis and creation of personalized treatment plans, we are here throughout the journey. At the heart of the Center are caregiver support and resources to assist in understanding cognitive disorder disease progression and other challenges of aging. We make connections with community-based support networks and assist in navigating the path to improved well-being for patients, caregivers and loved ones.

The Martha W. Goodson Center is located in Williamsburg, Virginia, and connects patients and loved ones to our health care network of Riverside physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, clinical professionals and real loved ones going through their own experiences. Our care network expands over 8,000 square miles of Southeastern Virginia.

RIVERSIDE MENTAL HEALTH & RECOVERY CENTER

The Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center provides the most comprehensive range of behavioral health services on the Peninsula. Our services include acute care for adults and adolescents, crisis assessment, adult detoxification services, an intensive addiction outpatient program, depression services, a partial hospitalization program, dialectical behavioral therapy and the only dedicated psychiatric emergency department in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Riverside was the first comprehensive, interventional stroke care provider in the region. We were among the earliest systems in the nation to use advanced imaging to assess stroke patients’ brains and have been recognized regularly with the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get with the Guidelines® Stroke quality achievement award.

Riverside’s Radiosurgery Center, in affiliation with Chesapeake Regional and the University of Virginia Health System, has continued to be an innovator in the care of new patients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

PROVIDE PATIENTS

We were the first area system to use interoperative guidance for precision in neurosurgery. Riverside was one of only 100 providers in the nation to earn Healthgrades’ 2022 Spine Surgery Excellence Award.

CONTINUITY OF CARE

We are uniquely positioned to treat patients with neurological conditions, many of whom require multifaceted levels of care.

Riverside Health System currently consists of four acute care hospitals, three specialty hospitals, more than 110 primary care offices, six senior living facilities, home care services and physical therapy clinics. Riverside Smithfield is set to open in late 2025, which will add a new additional 50-bed acute care facility with an emergency department, a labor and delivery department with a Level 1 Neonatal Nursery and diagnostic imaging services, including CT and MRI.

WHY RIVERSIDE

WHY NOW Today, our communities face many complex health concerns. An aging population means more need for memory care services and stroke treatment and prevention.

For families facing these conditions for their loved ones, having care close to home is essential. So, too, is the need for coordinated services across the health care continuum.

The Campaign for Neurosciences is designed to provide services throughout our facilities with integrated care teams delivering inpatient, outpatient and long-term services.

WHY NOW A crisis in behavioral health, including addiction, has meant a dramatic increase in service needs across all ages.

PSYCH I AT R I C E ME R GE NCY DE PARTM ENT Scheduled to open in late 2023, Riverside will be the first health system in the Commonwealth of Virginia to have a dedicated Psychiatric Emergency Department. Supported in part by philanthropy, the nearly 15,800 square-foot, freestanding facility will be located on the Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center campus and is designed to care for patients with mental illnesses, behavioral health concerns and substance abuse disorders who otherwise would go to local medical emergency rooms

OUR PILL ARS COMPREHENSIVE STROKE CENTER & STROKE INTERVENTION NETWORK for those we love O UR ST R EN G T HS Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Advanced Stroke Network is the first accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center in Southeastern Virginia. Our three other facilities have a Primary Stroke Center designation. Collectively, in 2021, we treated 1,600 stroke patients in emergency departments and 1,500 patients in our hospitals. We offer treatment for strokes at every stage – inpatient, outpatient, long-term care, and specialized rehabilitation.

Riverside is one of the few health systems in the country with a team of neurointerventionalists, highly skilled clinicians who use advanced technologies to identify, diagnose, assess and treat stroke patients. We are able to treat patients faster and improve outcomes with dedicated teams of emergency care clinicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, therapists and social workers.

OUR PILL ARS BEHAVIORAL & MENTAL HEALTH for those we love O UR ST R EN G T HS Multidisciplinary teams of psychiatrists, nurses and therapists provide care to those coping with serious behavioral health needs, including depression, anxiety and psychosis. Our evidence-based approach provides personalized treatment plans that allow for continuous care in inpatient and outpatient settings.

For patients grappling with addiction, Riverside offers personalized, comprehensive treatments, including inpatient detox and outpatient services. In 2022, Riverside launched a new, therapy-led intensive outpatient program that provides invaluable support for patients on the path to sobriety, using national standards of care.

OUR PILL ARS MOVEMENT DISORDERS & CHRONIC NEUROLOGICAL CONDITIONS for those we love O UR ST R EN G T HS Riverside provides care for patients living with movement disorders, including ALS, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, dystonia and others. We deploy neurostimulation techniques, including deep brain and vagus nerve stimulation, which use implanted electrodes to better control various neurological conditions.

Our ALS clinic was the first in the Hampton Roads area, providing one-stop multidisciplinary evaluations. The Riverside Multiple Sclerosis Center treats 1,500 patients annually and was recognized as a Center for Comprehensive MS Care by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In addition, we offer multiple support groups for patients, friends and family to share experiences, challenges and triumphs.

OUR PILL ARS B RAI N & S PI N E CA R E for those we love O UR ST R EN G T HS Riverside has the largest neurology group on the Peninsula and expansive outpatient services to diagnose and treat patients with brain, spine and nervous system conditions. We are the only system in the area with 24/7 neurosurgical coverage for emergency needs. In 2021, our neurologists and neurosurgeons treated nearly 35,000 patients.

Our neurosurgeons use advanced technologies for diagnostics, monitoring and image guidance, including the Gamma Knife® as an alternative to traditional brain surgery and the Varian Edge™ for tumor tracking and motion management. We are one of only 40 sites in the United States dedicated to stereotactic radiosurgery, a noninvasive treatment for tumors and lesions.
