How lo(cal) can you go?

W

e all know the importance of small businesses to our economy, but what about the smallest of small? In the season of farmers markets and pop up shops, all of a sudden, we see the talent hiding in plain sight. The sewing, baking, crafting, painting, pottery, woodworking and anything you can imagine, are all on display. Locally made and locally sold, it’s the epitome of shopping local.

It feels like there’s a growing groundswell in favour of this type of hyper local shopping, driven by a combination of factors. In the past, buying things was expensive, so people made them out of financial necessity. For example, before growing affluence, cheap international labour and fast fashion, many Canadians made their own clothes because they couldn’t really afford to buy them. But it’s now been close to half a century of cheap and easily available retail clothing and handmade has come to signify quality and individuality more than financial need.

The same story holds true for many of the handmade items we purchase and I think part of the resurgence has to do with an increasing preference for quality over quantity.

We are inundated with cheap products and many people look around their homes and see lots of stuff. Instead of buying more, buying quality products that offer a connection to the maker is an effective cure for retail overload. You know

Another factor is how much easier it now is for artisans to get their products to customers. In the past, they would have to attend events in person, try to get a retail location to carry their products or invest heavily in advertising.

Today, those avenues are still open, but online retailing has allowed artisans to sell directly to customers across the country and around the world in a professional way, even if they aren’t that tech savvy. As well, an enthusiastic and devoted marketer can build up an international following for free, something that really wasn’t possible a decade or two ago.

number of thoughts crossed my mind over the long weekend and so I thought I would share them.

•How come we have so many different kinds of groups of rights? There are dozens of groups claiming certain rights but I won’t name them as some would be offended they are included in the list and some would be offended if they were left off the list. Why can’t we just have human rights and leave it at that?

•Instead of chasing around after different groups’ rights, why don’t we just address the various injustices that exist?

For example, why do some communities have clean drinking water and others don’t? Why do some students have good schools and some don’t? Why are there huge discrepancies in the amount of money government puts into housing in urban areas as compared to rural and remote areas?

•How is it that political parties can hijack the political nomination process?

And better yet, why would they want to do so? Why is it that local constituency associations are sometimes overruled on who can be their candidate? Isn’t that just plain wrong?

•Why is it that in the provincial legislature and the federal parliament that party member MLAs and MPs have to vote only along party lines. How can the leader (premier or prime minister) have the nerve to dictate to the members how to vote on items (other than the budget perhaps)? What if a member wants to vote according to their conscience?

artisans studios, why don’t we do this at home? Prince Edward Island has turned theirs into a major tourist attraction, with visitors touring and buying from independent shops and studios around the island. There’s no reason why we can’t do that here, especially as more and more come into existence. This past week, I was able to visit four shops in Neepawa and Minnedosa that sold items made in Manitoba, most from within a 50 km radius. Each artisan, each shop, adds to the critical mass, making it more worthwhile for visitors from further afield to make the trek out. If PEI has managed to take artisans spread out across a mostly rural area and turn it into an internationally recognized tourist destination, we should be able to build upon what we have to turn it into at least a regional attraction.

There’s something supremely satisfying about buying from the person who made the product, either directly or at stores and co-ops selling the work of local people. Buying from these venues has become increasingly trendy in urban areas and it’s spreading to rural communities too.

I hope to see this trend continue to gain steam, it can only be good for our region and the people who live here. The more local residents can make use of their skills and talents to support their families and themselves, the more we can offer to make ourselves a destination, regardless of where the customer is from.

RIGHT IN THE CENTRE

Ken Waddell legislation? Should they not be allowed a free vote? Whenever a member questions the government and votes against the party line, they get turfed.

•When people vote for a politician, they expect them to vote along with the majority of the constituency or at the very least according to their conscience.

They should expect nothing less but in many cases, the reality falls far short of the expectation.

•Why are so many people not casting votes? Is it because they feel it is useless?

I wonder. No, I don’t wonder, I know.

People figure it’s useless to vote because they feel nothing will change. Maybe the parties want it that way, keep expectations low, keep voter turnout low and you can win government on 40 per cent of the votes cast. If only 50 per cent of the voters actually cast votes, you can then win an election by getting 20 per cent of the people out to vote. Pretty simple way to win an election isn’t it? Only have to convince two in ten people to actually vote for you and you get elected.

•As I pondered over the Canada Day long weekend how fortunate we are in Canada, it also crossed my mind as to how fragile that fortune is. Our democracy is not nearly as vibrant or a strong

as it once was. Many of our leaders can’t speak all that well. Some of them obviously can’t think very well either.

For many of them, we have no clue as to what they really believe. They develop policy by focus groups and on the fly.

Policies have to keep the mainstream media happy or they will be trashed.

If a policy doesn’t meet the accepted narrative of the CBC, it will be at best ignored or at worst ridiculed.

•Why do we send billions of dollars each year to Manitoba to prop up our poorly managed economy and many more billions of dollars to Quebec so they can have a cheap daycare and a propped up arts and cultural community?

•Why can Quebec and Alberta have privately run health clinics, diagnostic services and surgery and we can’t?

•Why, why, why?

The answer is simple, it because we let them and we need to stomp our feet and lift Canada up to an even better position. Complacency is a bad thing and it is long past time when we should be getting more involved.

Comment: I have no regrets about staying in my hometown. People are friendly and everyone helps each other out. MYJC is always looking for projects. We have a great group of energetic students who are more than willing to help out.

he holiday was intended to be a time away from responsibilities and a time to recharge the spiritual batteries. The time on Iona did that wonderfully. The major presences on the island are the Iona Abbey and the ruins of a nunnery. The abbey, constructed in the 1200s by the Benedictine order, and the nunnery around the same time by the Augustine order. Massive stone structures, serene and calming. The time on the isle did all that I had hoped for. As I mentioned from hell to heaven and then back to the real world.

Marie and I spent the better part of a week in Edinburgh, renting a lovely flat one block off the Royal Mile. Four flights up – good for the step counter! High on the list of impromptu stops are churches. While admiring St. Giles, a public announcement asked us all to leave as a wedding was to celebrated in the lovely cathedral. (we returned another day to complete our tour). Down a side street we found a small church, one honouring the Ste. Margaret Sinclair, a dedicated nun who died at an early age. This was the one and only time we felt very uncomfortable. There were a half a dozen folks, sitting in quiet contemplation when a young woman walked purposefully in, flung her bagged lunch on the communion table and then hopped up, and sat there, staring at us defiantly as she tore into her sandwich, casually swinging her legs as she observed us.

None of us sitting there spoke, I assume we were all tourists, and after a uncomfortable few minutes, we slipped out. If it had been my church, would I have spoken? I believe I would.

Should I have? Greyfriars Church was next and, of course, I stopped to rub the nose of the bronzed Scottie dog, Bobbie, who, legend has it, remained at his master’s grave site for some fourteen years, before passing away himself.

Music – an Irish Catholic marching band, well escorted, drums booming, pipes skirling, drew crowds. In our walking we had discovered Canongate Church, lovely ancient structure, well used, and attended a concert presented by a young choir form Alabama. Acoustics incredible!

We spent a day in Edinburgh Castle. Crowds of people everywhere! Sat in for high tea, choose a quiet tea room rather than the lawn for the weather was warm. Of all the sights and sounds on the hill, the military memorials moved me the most.

The hall was silently reverent, no cameras allowed, and any conversation was in whispers. Reverence. Books and books with the names of the fallen, including the Canadians. A young lad standing beside a grave, and the inscription-‘known only to God’, a moving seaman’s memorial – ‘ they have no other grave than the sea.’ A poem by Moina Miichael- ‘We shall Keep the Faith’ in response to ‘In Flanders Fields”, the section honouring the chaplains. So beautiful and so impactful.

Couldn’t leave the area without climbing Arthur’s Hill. I nearly made it to the top! Equal to 95 flights of stairs.

Cadet Update "After a short five months, our first year of police cadets has been a success! Another huge thank you to all of our local families, businesses and charities who donated to our program, you have made it possible to have this program for our youth. The cadets, which ranged from 35 youth from the beginning of the year, to a steady 25 youth graduated on June 6th, and were presented with their certificates of appreciation and dedication to the program. Due to the generous donation from The Rivers Collegiate Youth In Philanthropy group, we were able to purchase new uniform t-shirts for four distinguished cadets who were promoted on the sixth for their leadership and teamwork qualities! The uniform shirts were different in color, had a dedicated rank marker on each arm, and their names printed on the rear. We intend on carrying on with the program in the following months, with a tentative starting month of Late September, early October in 2018.

Throughout the past year, we developed the cadet’s ability to perform drills, which require patience, dedication, and hard work. We have also worked on organized team games, movie nights, presentations, and community involvement projects. Our plan for this up coming year is to be able to participate in one, if not two out-of-school field trips, such as visiting the Souris Rock Pit, fishing derbies, and local camping. We also plan to host a fund raising event for the program to secure future funds for the program. We look forward to developing more young cadets into strong, ethical and hard working members of our community in the following years; a return in investment that our supportive community has entrusted to our youth."

Funds raised for Riverdale Palliative Care

Naomi Russell Rivers Palliative Care The Riverdale Palliative Care organization would like to thank the members of our community and beyond for their generosity shown during a recent fundraising drive.

RPC has traditionally held their Hike for Hospice at this time of year but opted this year to simply collect pledges. $2085 was raised in this way and funds will be used to enrich palliative care services in Rivers.

The organization has many dedicated caregivers and volunteers who care for those who are facing life-limiting illnesses and for their loved ones. These volunteers work many hours with those approaching death to ensure that the burdens of suffering, loneliness and grief are lessened.

Riverdale Palliative Care would like to sincerely thank all those who have made donations in the past year in memory of loved ones. All funds raised in our community stay in our community so thanks to all for your support! Anyone wishing more information about our local committee work or to express an interest in taking the volunteer course can feel free to contact Esther Krahn at 204-328-7189.

On Tuesday June 26, 2018 , R i ve r s U n i t e d Church hosted a Retirement Celebration in honor of Reverend Glenna Beauchamp. In keeping with her favorite color and children's time props, the decorations included the color blue along with several troll dolls! Joan Thomson, dear friend of Glenna's, escorted her down the sanctuary aisle, in front of a large crowd of SUBMITTED PHOTOS worshippers of many denominations, to their specially reserved pew to begin the evening. Megan Lelonde was the Emcee for the festivities. The Senior Choir sang one of Glenna's favorite musical selections, a South African Zulu spiritual, "Siyahamba".

Greetings, speeches and best wishes were given from Rev. Barb Jardine (Forrest United Church), Rev. Sally Carter (St. James Anglican Church), Gary Neilson (Rivers Legion), Dianne Kowalchuk(Presbytery) and Connie vanDixhoorn(Church Council). All agreed that Glenna was a gift to our community and that her 23 years at Rivers United was filled with exceptionally dedicated and heartfelt service to the church, the wider church, Rivers and the surrounding communities. She was presented with a lovely water color painting done by Ina Hyndman. Glenna graciously thanked everyone for continuing to make Rivers her 'home' and for the painting. Refreshments and cake were served in the Friendship Hall and visiting concluded the evening.

On Saturday, June 30 a Children's Fair took place put on by the Play Group. They had interesting and fun activities for the children which included giant bubbles, face painting, splatter painting and the children made a volcano and set it off at the end of the fair. A Yoga session took place on the Band Stand as well. There will be a Grand Opening of the Band Stand sometime this month.

Kenton Memorial Hall on a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning July 1 for the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast put on by the Kenton United Church.

The Kenton and Area Lions Club held their annual Car Rally complete with poker hands and questionnaires. The winners of the car rally were: 1)Bill Alexander, 2)Loretta Black and Sean Tolton tied for second place. These winners won cash. Winners of the questionnaire were Robert and Roma Stevenson and they won a case of coke. 150 hands were purchased.

The Kenton Legion opened at 3 pm. for those wanting refreshments. Topping off the day was the Agricultural Society Pit Beef Barbecue Supper which was delicious and well attended.

The new Band Stand had live music for the evening with the following musicians taking part: Henry Wilson (drums), Nicole Wilson, Sheena Blanchard(Hamiota), Martin Finnie, Cameron Nolan and Brett Hemrica.

Appreciation is extended to all those who helped to make the events a success!

Summer is here! I hope everyone had a great Canada Day weekend. Now with school out, and the sun shining its time to think about what we can do this summer in Riverdale!

We’ve got a couple great programs lined up for children and adults this summer here in the community.

A drop in pickleball program continues at RCC from 11am-12pm on Mondays. This program is free and all skill levels are welcome to come and participate! Another continuing program is our Playtime at the Park which takes place on Thursdays from 10.30am-12pm at the Rivers Kids Park. We bring the supplies, you bring the children and together we will have a whole lot of fun!

Successful programs/ events that wrapped up this spring included: drop in f loorball, kids in the kitchen, Jr. golfing, and RCC/Curling Clubs Sports Dinner.

Due to lack of registrations, we unfortunately had to cancel the Beach Volleyball League that was planned to run this summer.

However, we haven’t given up on the beach volleyball dream and are looking at hosting a beach volleyball

RRC’s day camps have started this week! We always have room for more, so if you are trying to find something for your child (ages 5-12) to do throughout the day, why not send them to our camps! We have weekly themes, and great staff and games to keep them engaged and having fun all day.

If you are looking for specific sports camps this summer we’ve got you covered there as well! RRC is hosting a Volleyball Camp with the ACC Cougars August 28. This is a one-day camp and all high school athletes are welcome to join. We also have a Female Hockey Camp taking place this August at RCC! Facilized by Olympic athlete Jenn Wakefield, this camp allows female athletes the opportunity to develop their skill set for there upcoming season.

Our first annual Community Market is set to start next Wednesday ( July 11) and run every Wednesday for the summer. We are still looking for vendors, so if your garden is overflowing, or you’ve got some goodies to sell please register for our markets! If community run organizations are looking for fundraising ideas, we’ve got you covered! Host your BBQ with us during the

market hours and you keep the profit for your group.

Our condolences are sent to the Bollman family on the passing of Georgina Bollman. We hope you enjoyed a sandwich and piece of pie at our Rivers Fair food booth July 4. Along with Rivers Baptist Church, Rivers United will host Vacation Bible Camp August 20-24. Watch for posters around town for registration information. The Rivers Comets took on the Elkhorn Expos Friday June 29, to take home the win. Eric Truscott came up two for three with one run and one RBI. Ryan Shaw had one run and one RBI and went one for three. Mike McFadden and Dana McNish both came in at one for three, with one run and a double. The Rivers Comets are currently sitting in second place for the SWBL Northern Division with a record of 10-2.

Damage to the bins has not yet been estimated.

July 4, 1963 Manitobas Tobacco Tax Act went into effect Jul 1. The tax also applied to purchasers of cigarettes, cigars and tobacco that were held at the time by retailers.

Retailers had been instructed to count stocks on hand as of the close of business before the Act came into force, and were responsible for collecting tax on such initial stocks.

Martin (Marty) Derek Ramsey (April 5th, 1988 – March 11th, 2018)

Marty was born April 5th, 1988 in Brandon, MB to Cam and Shelley Ramsey, a baby brother for Craig. He spent a short time living in Oak River until the family moved to the “Ramsey home farm” in June of 1988.

Marty was raised on the N ½ of 5-14-22 in the R.M. of Blanshard.

Marty’s elementary school journals tell his story: friends, cattle, sports and family were the most important things in his life.

While growing up Marty played hockey with Tri-Town, Rivers Collegiate, Blanshard Bobcats, Olds College and Kenton Cougars. He participated in all school sports while attending Oak River School and continued playing volleyball at Rivers Collegiate and then Olds College. At 8 years old he joined the Rivers 4-H Beef Club where he was a member for 8 years. He honed his skills as a showman and enjoyed showing his steers and in later years his heifers on fair day.

Time spent with his grandparents was special to Marty. Trips to Regina for holidays, shopping and meals in restaurants or sleepovers in Oak River were all highlights of his younger years. He worked hard and played hard. He could be seen cutting grass around town for various businesses and individuals, babysitting and he held summer jobs with Blanshard Pork. Marty always loved people. Report cards and parent-teacher interviews always had comments that he spent too much time socializing. He was always up for a party, be it for a birthday when he was younger, or “just because” in his teen years. Marty had a smile that took up his whole face, which is definitely one of the many things that he will be remembered for.

Following his graduation from Rivers Collegiate in 2006 Marty moved out to Olds, Alberta where he attended Olds College. At Olds, Marty took the Ag Production diploma. He made lots of great friends, many of whom he was still very close with. Marty moved home and started his career at Richardson Pioneer in Shoal Lake in 2008.

Marty worked for Richardson Pioneer for almost 10 years.

He started his career off as a Location Assistant and worked his way up to an Area Marketing Rep. Marty worked hard at this job and made many connections. He enjoyed visiting with farmers and meeting new people in the business. He especially enjoyed the “business trips” and treating farmers to fun events. Marty was able to manage working off the farm at Richardson Pioneer full time as well as running a land and cattle operation at home. Cattle were Marty’s passion and he bought his first bred heifers in 2000. Marty was just beginning “Ramsey Land & Cattle” with about 100

commercial Simmental cows along with 800 acres of his own land that he farmed with his Dad, uncles and cousin. Marty knew every cow on the farm and which calf belonged to that particular cow for generations. Marty’s farming career was just getting going and he had big dreams to eventually not need the off the farm income.

Marty worked hard on and off the farm, but he was a great family man and loved his family very much. In 2013, Marty married his wife Kaitlyn (Lockhart) at Kaitlyn’s parents’ farm in Hamiota. The following year Kaitlyn and Marty built a new home close to the Ramsey home farm. Marty loved being home and working on the farm, but he also loved holidays and living life. There are many stories of him doing crazy things on trips to the States, Toronto, Mexico, Las Vegas, Calgary etc. He also enjoyed wearing muscle shirts and socializing at the lake on the pontoon boat as well as holding down a chair at the Oak River Inn. Marty was always the biggest “kid” around.

In August of 2016, Marty and Kaitlyn welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Halle Jane into their family. Marty loved Halle more than anything. He was an amazing Daddy to her and loved watching her grow and change. Marty took the time to be present with Halle and was often found lying on the floor with her playing tractors or dolls or reading stories. Marty and Kaitlyn’s second child will be arriving in September 2018. It breaks our hearts to know that Marty will not be here to be an active part of their lives but we know they will both know what an amazing Dad they had through all the memories and stories that we have to share.

Marty is survived by his wife Kaitlyn and daughter Halle; parents Cam & Shelley; brother Craig Ramsey; Grandmother Dorothy Ramsey; Grandmother Norma McDonald; Kaitlyn’s parents Murray & Lori Lockhart; sister-in-law Stacie (Dillin) Stonehouse; Brother-in-law Troy Lockhart (Laura Foss) as well as many Aunts, Uncles & Cousins in the Ramsey and McDonald extended families. Marty was predeceased by his Grandpas Robert Ramsey and Rae McDonald. A celebration of life was held in Marty’s honour in Oak River on March 18th, 2018.

Our hearts are broken and it is hard for us to believe that someone who had so much life left to live is gone. We cannot thank everyone enough for all the support they have given us over the past few months as we struggle through our journey of grief. We are so fortunate to have so many amazing friends, family and community members who have helped us in many ways. It is said that, “where there is deep grief, there was great love.” We loved Marty with all our hearts and will forever be grateful for all of the memories and 2 legacies (Halle & Baby R.) that he has left us with.
