David Roberts ’80, Chair of the Board of Trustees We celebrated our centennial as one of the finest independent schools in the world a short three years ago. At that time, we looked back to Frank Hackett’s vision of a “country”school in a major global city, with a student body engaged in the affairs of the city and the world—young people who put their knowledge and skills to practical use in making the world a better place for all of us. Now, we envision being a leader in education with a traditional and innovative approach to teaching and learning. With our green campuses within NewYork City, our rigorous academic program and rich co-curricular offerings, we allow students to challenge themselves and to become independent thinkers and doers in this increasingly complex world we inhabit. As we develop the minds and character of our young people we also offer inspiration to other educators around the world by:

Any institution in this world must think about its mission in these changing and challenging times; it is an especially interesting time for schools and educators to think about their goals and intentions as they educate our younger generation to be prepared for the world they will inherit and in which they will live. To that end, Riverdale has been engaged in active self-reflection over the past five years through our accreditation and strategic planning processes. We are focused on developing our strengths as a school community and ensuring that our students are more engaged, thinking more deeply across and within disciplines, and becoming better ethical decision-makers. We have focused our efforts on four main fronts: in developing MINDS, building CHARACTER, inspiring COMMITMENT, and creating COMMUNITY. These emphases have allowed us to move to INVOLVING the community in taking immediate action, generating IDEAS that will guide our work in these next years, and bringing INSPIRATION to other schools, individuals, and institutions globally as a leader in education.

Our mission is to create the mindset in our students that will have them set on a path of life-long learning and prepare them for making good change in our world. We hope that by participating in the Annual Fund this year, you can also be a part of this dynamic and inspirational school community.

Rosen ’92, Chair, Development Committee The Annual Fund is a critical part of what enables our children to have the Riverdale experience they enjoy every day when they leave us in the morning and travel to one of our beautiful campuses to learn, study, and play. As the parent of a young child attending Riverdale and as an alumnus, I am delighted to see the growth and positive change in the school over the years. I could not be happier, knowing my son is not only getting the finest education but is also being taught to be a good citizen. Sufficient funding for the school is crucial to keeping this momentum going for our children today—and for future generations tomorrow.

The Annual Fund fills the gap between tuition and the cost to educate each child. It pays for professional development for our faculty and funds a large part of the financial aid program, which this year tops $7 million. Riverdalians have a long tradition of generously supporting our School in every respect. Even in last year’s modestly recovering economy, our community rallied to support the School. The final numbers from the 2009-10 Annual Fund show that we exceeded our goal by 5.8 percent, raising $3,385,605 from 1,560 donors.

We are kicking off the 2010-11 Annual Fund campaign with a goal of $3.2 million, seeking donations from the entire Riverdale community. Every contribution matters.Your participation in the Annual Fund demonstrates support for Riverdale and acknowledges the role that the school plays in your life.

There are benefits of contributing to the Annual Fund beyond supporting the school. As in previous years, families contributing $1,907 or more will receive an invitation to our Society of Riverdalians reception. In addition, families who contribute $5,000 or more will be invited to join us for special events and performances throughout the year.

We love ideas here and get our students to appreciate the amazing strength that an idea can have. We also have ideas about our future and some areas in which we are taking ideas and transforming them into realities.

ideas Riverdale has been working on a number of tangible initiatives over the past three years that have been funded by your generosity to the School. We have investigated a number of ideas and have started to implement them.

We have been working on reforming our curriculum to focus on good interdisciplinary work, on application of knowledge and skills in authentic contexts—such as our Summer Science Research Program and Senior Projects— and curriculum development surrounding creative and critical thinking.

Increasingly, we want our students to experience the world, but also better understand the city and nation in which they live.

We send students across the globe to countries such as India, Spain, France, and Botswana to engage in service and learning about other cultures.

We also have our students do community service in the Bronx and try to use, to the best advantage, the richness of our city to support student learning.

Understanding the world also demands that students understand themselves and seek to understand different points of view. That is why our school has to be inclusive and aim to represent the diversity inherent in New York City. One learns most effectively when one recognizes and appreciates the wonderful diversity in our world. We want Riverdale to ensure that learning process happens in all our students.

ideas Not only do we have our students develop their minds, but we also believe that character and ethical decision-making are essential to good learning and living. Therefore, we emphasize character strengths such as curiosity, zest, and grit in our programs, in addition to the intellectual strengths schools normally develop.

Our school community reveres great teaching. Our teachers have a deep appreciation of their disciplines and the art and science of good teaching, but they also love working with young people.

Our teachers are role models for who we want our students to become—they love learning, but they also love taking that learning and using it to make the world a better place.

Independent Curriculum Group

Students of the World: Riverdale Travels to China

To be successful, an education program must be constantly evolving. We have a deep respect for the traditions established by our founder more than a century ago that call for “intimate, scholarly teaching,” but we know intellectual growth often depends on new ideas and fresh perspectives. To that end Riverdale has joined the Independent Curriculum Group, a consortium of independent schools. This organization is committed to developing courses that challenge and inspire students. Faculty work collaboratively and with the student body to create classes that reflect the passions of the school community and that will have lasting impact. Innovations in our interdisciplinary classes, including a new Climate Change elective, make Riverdale an exciting laboratory for new approaches to teaching.

Building on the success of past international study programs, Riverdale is currently recruiting Upper School students to participate in a trip to China this June. In addition to visiting some of China’s most renowned historical and cultural sites in Beijing, students will take Chinese classes, engage in community service, participate in social and cultural activities, and go on excursion trips. Our students will also have the opportunity to stay with Chinese host families. This new trip builds on the success of past expeditions to India, Botswana, France, Spain, and Italy. These global travel opportunities, which have become increasingly popular with our students in recent years, are made possible in large part through the Annual Fund.

Developing a Language of Character

Teachers such as Debbie Wing and Danny LaChance (below) embody the traditions of Riverdale and are moving the school forward with innovative teaching methods and an outstanding commitment to their students. Debbie is the 2009 winner of the Al Davis Award for Teaching Excellence.

“Our primary goal is to create a safe space in which children can grow, take new risks, and learn about themselves as students and individuals,” says Debbie. “With my students, I make the point that knowledge does not exist in a vacuum. An interdisplinary approach gives you the possibility of drawing connections among subjects for deeper meaning,” adds Danny.

Riverdale puts an emphasis on teaching young people to think well. We are a “thinking community”. One of the most important elements of good thinking is one’s ability to question one’s assumptions. To that end, we want to ensure that Riverdale is an incredibly inclusive community. Being more diverse in all sorts of ways is an essential part of our mission. This allows everyone in our community to learn from others and to question their own assumptions. Over the past few years, we have put together Community Development Teams on both of our campuses, with Directors who work on understanding difference and ensuring inclusion for all our students and families. They also create events and help bring speakers to the campus to make us think about difference, equity and justice, and inclusion. As we move forward as a school, we need to ensure that we are giving students from all backgrounds and with all types of experiences the skills and understanding to work in an ever-diverse and rich global community.

For the past three years we have embarked upon a project informed by “positive psychology”—a field developed by Martin Seligman—to develop a “language” of character and find ways to intentionally build strengths such as grit, curiosity, optimism, and gratitude in our children. Although schools and institutions often talk about character, it is usually ill-defined or it is not clear what is meant by the word. We are trying to think, along with the KIPP charter schools, in more intentional ways about character development and what it means. We have been working on a core group of strengths: curiosity, zest, optimism, gratitude, social intelligence, self-control, and grit. Our work has consisted of putting together an evaluative tool and creating language based in student behaviors. We are starting to use that language in the school community and hope to intentionally craft learning experiences around these capacities. As we all know, intelligence is required in life; however, the capacity to use intelligence to good effect is linked to one’s character. Ensuring that our students have the character to work effectively in the 21st century is becoming a focus for our school.

David Patnaude, our Director of Plant & Sustainability, has engaged students, faculty, and staff in thinking

about energy conservation and the stewardship of our campuses and buildings. As part of their Senior Gift, the Class of 2010 gave a solar panel array—installed on the Jeslo Harris Theater—that has already started

producing electricity for us. We hope to increase our understanding of—and attention to—environmental sustainability in the years ahead.

supports participatory action research by students and faculty to better understand our school culture, the lives of all of our students, and how we cope with issues such as race, socio-economic difference, gender, and sexuality in our school community.

The results of this research will help us to shape a variety of student programs in the coming years.
