The recognition of four generations raising quality Angus cattle from the pioneer days in the 1930’s to today is a heartfelt honour. We are thankful for the quality people we’ve had the pleasure to meet over the years. This is a truly rewarding lifestyle and we look forward to the next generation.

We would like to welcome everybody to our 17th annual bull and select female sale.

We are continually striving toward genetic improvement which is an exciting and motivating challenge, as there is always room for improvement. Our breeding program focuses on calving ease and pounds in the fall, as the cattleman sells pounds for a living. We also strive hard to keep the essential traits that make the Angus breed rise to the top, such as fleshing ability, phenotype, thickness, length, good udders, solid feet, superior soundness with a gentle disposition and structurely correct from the ground up. We strive for cattle to carry these traits along with performance and do it in an efficient manner.

We are into our 4th generation in the Angus business and going strong. Our cow herd still runs through the Battle River hills as it did 83 years ago. They are strong independent females that get the job done year after year. Our cows raise their calves on grass, salt and mineral. We do not creep our calves, nor do our cows go on any cover crop or swath grazing before weaning. Our weaning date was September 6th last fall.

DLMS will be with us again this year broadcasting live for online bidding again. We will have videos of all the bulls and heifers on our website as well as DLMS. Plus there’s photos available of all our bulls and heifers on our Rivercrest Angus website with links to the videos.

It is truly an honor and privelege to serve all our repeat buyers, local and from afar and to meet and provide for new customers. Welcome to the 17th edition of the Spady Bull Sale. We hope 2020 finds you in good health and spirits. 2019 had its fair share of challenges. Starting with the longest, coldest February I can ever remember to the summer flooding in some parts of the country and the drought in others. We kind of hit a happy medium and the feed yard is as full as ever. I also had a couple bull customers tell me that they received their biggest per steer cheques ever. That was good news and hopefully there is more of that in the future.

We are very excited to present this group of bulls for your evaluation. It is the culmination of selecting AI sires and planned mating’s 2 years ago. It is also the legacy of the herd that Grandpa Jack started over 80 years ago. There is a rich heritage here at Valleymere and we are so proud to be part of it. These bulls represent the results of 3 generations of cattlemen selecting genetics that work in the real world. That is, on the ranch, in the feedlot, as well as the packing plant. We have never chased fads and have always selected multi-trait genetics. Calving ease with performance have always been top priorities. Cattle with length, thickness and volume with good hair coats work well here on our ranch. Tits, toes, and temperament are every bit as important. We keep udder and disposition scores at calving time and cows that don’t meet our threshold are culled. Year after year that threshold gets a little tougher. We have a full herd health program including Scourguard. We preg check every fall and open cows are culled, no exceptions. Neither do we breed any cows that aren’t nursing a calf. The cows swath graze in winter sometimes right into calving the start of February. We are very proud of our cow herd and the fact that we have so many repeat customers, tells me our program is working.

This pen of bulls represent five new AI sires as well as six walking herd sires. It is our most diverse and definitely one of our strongest groups ever offered. With 11 different sires it gives a lot of genetic options from heifer bulls right up to scale crushing power bulls. As always the Valleymere bulls have not had their guts or their feet fed out of them. We have a reputation of raising bulls that last.

We purchased 4D through the Blairs Ag Bull Sale from Chance Jackson who had leased some cows from Scott Anderson of Mountain View Farms. He is sired by A.I. stud Mar Innovation 251 who Genex states to be an instant eye pleaser that will impress in terms of depth, width, docility and all while standing on a perfect leg and foot. This describes 4D to a T. He has proven himself to sire low birth weight calves that wean above average and mature early into moderate framed, efficient calves that have some pretty good performance. His sons in this offering are like peas in a pod and are all recommended for heifers.

Certified was purchased as a 3 yr old bull from the Owen Almberg family at Hughenden. They run a 1500 cow outfit and had bought the bull from Arntzen Angus as a heifer bull but felt a bull of this quality should be in a purebred herd. I liked what I saw and used him as a clean-up bull on the AI cows with plans of using him as an outcross sire on our replacement heifers the following year. The plan didn’t work out as he died in the spring of 2020 of unknown causes. His calves are long-bodied, smooth and extremely stylish. They are all low birth weight and are off some of the top cows in our outfit.

We selected Five Star from the Bar E-L program for calving ease, performance and maternal strength. His sire, Musgrave Big Sky is known as a moderate birth weight sire with tremendous performance through weaning and yearling. His dam, DBRL 94T Bride 4W is listed elite and is one of Longshore’s best. He calved easy and his sons and daughters are at the top of the pen. Five Star was injured at the beginning of the 2018 breeding season so we didn’t get any calves from him until later. He has fully recovered and has developed into a powerhouse herd bull.

Lorne Dale Spady - December 30, 1947 to August 7, 2019 In honour of our Uncle and Friend, Lorne Spady.

Uncle Lorne passed away peacefully at his home in Alliance on August 7, 2019. He was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, horseman and cattleman. Uncle Lorne operated under the Valleymere LDS herd name and would be best known in Angus circles for raising the 1976 Agribition Grand Champion Female, Favourite of Valleymere LDS 11G. He may be better remembered for his adventurous encounters and his ability to re-live them through his riveting stories. No one could tell a story like Uncle Lorne and his sense of humour was contagious. He will be sadly missed and his memories will be cherished forever.

Rest easy Uncle Lorne, you deserve it.
