Our highly anticipated 2023-24 season continues with the variety and quality of programming for which RiverCenter is known. Our season includes everything from a graphic novel on film to classical ballet, Renée Fleming, Amy Grant, Foreigner, and more! Broadway titles include the heartwarming, and what some call transformational Come From Away, and the exuberant, no holds barred On Your Feet! An old favorite— Mannheim Steamroller Christmas—returns, followed by a newly discovered, talented Irish Tenor—Emmet Cahill. We have added two silent pictures to our series featuring THE WAVE, making three in all—Phantom of the Opera (1925), Metropolis (1927), and Wings (1927). And what would the holidays in Columbus be like without the RiverCenter Gingerbread Village?
RiverCenter has been serving the Columbus region for more than twenty years and we are rapidly approaching our 25th anniversary. RiverCenter has been steadfast in supporting the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus, in presenting varied programs with many free opportunities for the community to experience the finest concerts and touring entertainment, and in providing affordable topquality services to the performing arts. As a key factor in the economic development of our region, RiverCenter contributes millions of dollars to the local economy supporting jobs, household incomes, and other ancillary enterprises and services—all procured from local businesses.
As we approach our twenty-fifth year, we hope that you will look forward to more great seasons of entertainment. We also hope you will explore ways to help us upgrade and maintain aging mechanical systems to refresh this magnificent facility for generations to come. We appreciate you taking the time to visit us. Thank you for your continuing support of RiverCenter and thank you for helping Columbus be the best that it can be through your support of the arts community!
Here’s to warming hearts and lifting spirits!

Hartmut Höll is one of the most sought-after pianists on the international scene. For almost two decades he has accompanied the soprano Renée Fleming at concerts in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the United States.
From 1982 to 1992, he was the performance partner of the baritone Dietrich FischerDieskau. Evenings of lieder at festivals in Salzburg, Edinburgh, Florence, Munich, Berlin and Tokyo, as well as New York’s Carnegie Hall were much acclaimed.
For over four decades he has been associated in a song duo with the mezzosoprano Mitsuko Shirai. Höll has worked with many other singers, including Thomas Hampson, Hermann Prey, and Peter Schreier. He has recorded more than sixty CDs on major labels, many of them honored with international awards such as the Diapason d’Or and the German Record Critics’ Award.
He has also served as Rector and professor of the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
In 1998/1999, he was guest professor in Helsinki and from 1994 to 2003 guest professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. For almost a decade, he also taught at the Zurich University of the Arts.
Each year, Höll teaches at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Since 2019, he has been invited every year to the SongStudio of New York’s Carnegie Hall.
In 1990, Höll received the Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau. From 1985 to 2007, he was Artistic Director of the International Hugo Wolf Academy for Singing, Poetry and Art Song in Stuttgart. In 2012, Höll’s WordMusic (WortMusik) was published by Staccato-Verlag Düsseldorf, describing his professional experiences, approaches to songs, and personal memories.
When I was 14, the film Soylent Green was released, a sci-fi thriller about a dystopian future of worldwide pollution, dying oceans, depleted resources, and rampant starvation. The story was set in the year 2022.
The movie has faded from memory, but one scene left a profound impression. An aged researcher, unable to go on, has chosen assisted suicide at a government clinic. To ease his last moments of life, he is shown videos of a world that no longer exists: flowers and savannahs, flocks and herds, unpolluted skies and waters, all set to a soundtrack of classical music by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Grieg.
This scene captured my imagination in a terrifying way. The impact increased when I later learned that the actor playing the researcher, Edward G. Robinson, was terminally ill at the time it was filmed.
Fast forward to the pandemic. After more than two decades of constant touring, usually to urban cultural centers, performances abruptly ceased, and I suddenly found myself at home. I sought comfort in long walks outside near my house. I needed this time outdoors to maintain my emotional equilibrium, and I was reminded that nature would always be my touchstone. At the same time, the news about climate change grew more alarming: the extinction of animals we took for granted when we were children, the knowledge that white rhinos had disappeared from the wild, and daily reports of heat, fires, and flooding. I realized that the crisis we had been warned of for so long had arrived.
I thought of the great legacy of song literature that I love, when Romantic-era poets and composers reveled in imagery of nature, finding reflections of human experience in the environment. I decided to record some of this music, and to juxtapose these classics with the voices of living composers, addressing our current, troubled relationship with the natural world.
The result, in collaboration with my friend Yannick Nézet-Séguin, was the album Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene. When it received the 2023 Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album, I was thrilled, and I had the idea to tour music addressing this theme of nature as both our inspiration and our victim.
I was incredibly fortunate to connect with the imaginative, dedicated leadership at the National Geographic Society, the global non-profit committed to exploring, illuminating, and protecting the wonder of our world. It has been so exciting to work with this universally respected, landmark institution. I am deeply grateful for the help of President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Ulica, Chief Executive Officer Jill Tiefenthaler, and Producer/Editor Sam Deleon, whose expertise and vision have been instrumental in creating the video you will see in the second half of tonight’s program.
Thankfully, the stunning natural world depicted in this film still exists, unlike that movie scene so upsetting to my younger self. In blending these beautiful images with music, my hope is, in some small way, to rekindle your appreciation of nature, and encourage any efforts you can make to protect the planet we share.
Sincerely,
Renée FlemingRenée Fleming, soprano Hartmut Höll, piano

Disney Concerts is the concert production and licensing division of Disney Music Group, the music arm of The Walt Disney Company. Disney Concerts produces concerts and tours, and licenses Disney music and visual content to symphony orchestras, choruses and presenters on a worldwide basis. Disney Concerts’ concert packages include a variety of formats, such as “live to picture” film concerts, and themed instrumental and vocal compilation concerts that range from instrumental- only symphonic performances to multimedia productions featuring live vocalists and choirs. Featuring concerts from the largest movie franchises in the world – from Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar and 20th Century Studios – current titles include the Star Wars Film Concert Series, Toy Story, Aladdin, Disney Princess – The Concert, Coco, The Lion King, Up, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Muppet Christmas Carol.
Broadway Princess Party, LLC is an entertainment company, which co-produces Disney Princess – The Concert. The development of the production began when founding members Benjamin Rauhala and Laura Osnes created a show, Broadway Princess Party, which initially played Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York City and within a few years had amassed a large and loyal following and over 17 million views on YouTube. With this, Rauhala and Osnes formed a company with fellow castmate Susan Egan to begin developing the brand, eventually adding, Courtney Reed and Adam J. Levy to the partnership as well. In 2019 they reached out to Disney Concerts to see if the concept of combining the music of these princess characters might be able to reach an even wider audience, and the ‘glow-up’ Disney Princess – The Concert was born. Egan and Levy now serve as Managing Partners and Co-Executive Producers, while Rauhala serves as Creative Producer and Music Supervisor. Since 2021, the production has played over 140 US Cities and 17 countries worldwide.
Program will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including one 20-minute intermission.
*This production features Broadway performers appearing as themselves. Costumed Disney characters do not appear at this event. Cast subject to change.
