is here! Whoop, whoop! Every January I get so excited anticipating what is to come. My daily routine seems to run uniformly for the most part, but then there are always a few “surprises” along the way that keep things interesting.

This year I will turn the big 5-0, half a century--FIVE decades! However you choose to say it, I am just happy to be here. For those who may not have reached this milestone, YES, it truly is just a number, not a death sentence!

Nanny used to say, “It doesn’t matter how old you get, in your mind you’re always 25.” I love that remark. I may not completely agree with her since my body doesn’t always feel 25, but I can at least say I am wiser at 50 than I was at 25. That is the “silver lining” folks; I have learned to appreciate my people and the beauty of this world more. I tell people that I love them more often and how much they mean to me. I try to spend quality time outside, or at least with my window open so that I can hear the wind blowing the chimes and catch a glimpse of the sun or the rain. Both are beautiful in their own way.

Is there something that you are looking forward to in 2024? Are there lessons you learned in 2023 that you plan to utilize in 2024? Are there places you want to experience, or do you prefer to look at the view from your own window? Whatever 2024 holds for you, my friends, I pray that it will be full of blessings and happiness.

2024 Resolutions Sustainable and Intentional

A

s 2024 makes its grand entrance, most of us begin to revisit our previous New Year’s resolutions. You may have successfully improved your physical, mental, or financial health, or perhaps you “missed the mark” because of unrealistic goals. Regardless of the outcome of your past attempts, there is a way to guarantee personal satisfaction in 2024: resolve to do more to help others, the environment, and your community.

Research shows that helping or contributing without expecting something in return leads to greater happiness, less stress, better pain management, less depression, and better overall health. If you make a conscientious, intentional effort, the benefits of generosity are multiplied threefold. Not only is the recipient blessed, but the entire community is strengthened with each act of selfless kindness. Not sure how to get started?

Here are a few great ideas that will make 2024 your most fruitful and abundant year of all:

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE

According to the Red Cross, someone in the United States requires a blood transfusion every two seconds. Donating blood is a simple thing to do and can make a big difference in the lives of others. Your gift could help up to three people. On average, the process of giving blood takes about an hour from registration to completion; healthy donors without serious health issues are eligible every 56 days (6 months). Frequent donors have been

Clutter promotes anxiety, confusion, and stress; just think how nice it would be to have everything that you need at your fingertips at the right moment instead of searching for it. Now is the perfect time to free your home of unworn clothes, unused or outdated electronic devices, unwanted furniture, recently expired canned goods, and random surplus items.

Rather than simply discarding things you no longer need, donate them to someone who does. Lexington County has several homeless shelters, charity centers, and donation sites that will accept and distribute or sell your donations at discounted prices. There are also many online services that will match your items to a worthy recipient. Another bonus: you can deduct the fair market value of the donations from your taxable income.

Recycling options can vary widely depending on the type of items you are getting rid of, the current season, and the governing regulations in your area.

Of course, giving items away for free is perhaps the best form of recycling, but if you're not getting any responses, and you don't have the time or the inclination to list them online for free, there are always alternatives to throwing the items away.

Get creative—find ways to repurpose items so that they are useful and serve a purpose. Use foam pipe insulation or pool noodles to babyproof sharp edges and corners in your home, or use it as a wrist rest as you work at your desk. Old hardcover books can be repurposed as a knife block, or you could use the pages to create a romantic letter by pasting cut words or letters onto stock paper.

Imagine how it would feel to start each day in a positive, relaxed mood, ready to take on the world. Instead of mentally agonizing over the challenges that lie ahead, you choose to take control of your mind and focus on the positive aspects of life. As humans we naturally default to negativity, criticizing, and worrying about things that are usually out of our control. By keeping a daily gratitude journal you can develop a practice of focusing on positive affirmations, appreciating the little things in life, and enjoying happier days.

Expressing gratitude for another person shows that you notice them. Send a quick note to let someone know how much you appreciate them, how proud of them you are, or just to say thank you for being a blessing in your life. Praising others in front of family or coworkers can have an impact that lasts beyond the moment itself.

GO GREEN-PLANT A TREE

Trees foster healthy environments—they not only provide oxygen, material for paper products, shelter, shade, and warmth, but these protectors also supply valuable nutrients for the soil, deter surface erosion, and sustain precious wildlife.

Planting a tree in honor of a loved one who has passed has become a common practice, but you don’t need any “reason” other than goodwill to get started.

Whether you plant a tree in your yard, work with a local volunteer group to plant trees in your neighborhood, or make a donation that will plant trees in a forest restoration project, you are preserving and contributing to the health of our planet. Take time to research native species, weather patterns, and local utility guidelines before breaking ground. We need to actively acknowledge the impact that we have on the environment, especially in a world so heavily affected by climate change and deforestation.

Recognizing loved ones doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated; a successful Valentine’s Day results from thoughtful planning and paying attention to the small details. Think about the person’s interests, hobbies, health, and schedule— would they appreciate flowers, tools, candy, or an intimate dinner the most? If they have small children, perhaps you could arrange childcare services or a relaxing massage; if they are elderly, perhaps you could provide transportation, food preparation services, spend time reading to them, or reminisce with them while browsing photo albums. If you are searching for a more intimate, romantic Valentine’s Day treat or adventure for that special someone, we have some great local ideas for you!

A Vintage Winery Experience Enoree River Vineyards and Winery located on Dusty Road in Newberry offers a signature experience with exquisite, local wine selections. Laura and Richard LaBarre bought the 18-acre property, originally an overgrown cow pasture, in 2005. With extensive clearing, grading, and preparation, grape production began in 2008. Customers often describe the landscape and atmosphere of the winery to be reminiscent of authentic Italian vineyards. Laura notes with pride that the Winery does not utilize “shiners” or products manufactured by other facilities as most wineries do. (Shiners are finished, bottled wines that do not have a label or any other identifying features until a vintner purchases and designates a label on the bottles.) The venue serves local, handcrafted 100% real juice wines, with no chemical enhancements, processed, corked, and labeled onsite. All wines are made naturally, with minimal processing and sulfites, taking three months to a year to fully ferment. More than 60% of wines produced by Enoree River Vineyards and Winery are made with South Carolina fruits.

Guests can look forward to relaxing with their refreshment of choice in rocking chairs on the large wrap-around porch overlooking the massive vineyard, sample tastings from the current season’s harvest in the “Upper Room,” and tour the facility up

When the owners decided to sell the bakery in 2023, Heather was overjoyed that her dream would finally come to fruition, “Owning my own bakery is everything I have ever wanted,” she remarks with a glowing smile. “I’m honored to be able to do what I love in Lexington.” Heather also derives great satisfaction from contributing to worthy charities and shelters within the community. In December she was nominated as a competitor in the “Greatest Baker” competition, which supports The Andrew McDonough Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization for families battling childhood cancer.

“Valentine's Day is among my favorite occasions because as a pastry chef/baker, I can have fun and be creative,” Heather explains. A youngster’s worldview and character are shaped by two main factors: the environment they are exposed to and how they are acknowledged, validated, accepted, and treated. There should be an obvious, unified approach when rewarding, encouraging, affirming, and disciplining.

Instinctually parents want to place their children in a protective bubble.

Children can be very open to strangers; they may easily talk to others without hesitation or prejudice, and they are naturally fun and curious. It is important to be safe and cautious, but if children are always restricted from talking to other people, it may hinder their natural sense of communication and independence.

Allow your child to converse freely with people of all ages--from schoolmates to grandparents and extended family, to the lady operating the register at the grocery store, as long as they are safe. Distance yourself enough to give the child space to freely converse, but not so far away that the conversation cannot be monitored.

Listening intently to others and patiently waiting for their turn to speak can seem like an impossible feat for youngsters due to their short attention spans, but with patience it is achievable.

A great way to instill responsibility in a child is by giving them daily, manageable tasks according to their maturity level and physical capabilities. Create a notebook or writing board with a list of chores such as making the bed, washing the dishes, putting clean clothes in the laundry basket, and feeding the pets. This is just as important for them as learning to read or write. Give clear and straightforward instructions; you may need to demonstrate the way you want tasks to be completed.

Although they may complain, most children enjoy receiving sincere compliments after their chores are completed. Don’t hesitate to let them know when they have finished a task to your satisfaction.

Positive reinforcement has been proven to not only improve unflattering behavior but also build self-esteem and confidence while instilling leadership skills.

Make your child aware that no human

is perfect, including parents and role models. Give them examples of situations in which mistakes were made along with the consequences and steps that were taken to rectify the problem.

Having kids acknowledge and accept their own mistakes is a hard but very important task; there are powerful lessons that come along with every failure. Think of each struggle with your child as an opportunity for you to teach them different approaches that could have had a better outcome. Take time to ensure that they understand their mistake and how to avoid repeating it.

Young children who have been raised in a positive environment that demonstrates love and respect for others are inclined to be thoughtful adults. It is never too early to teach them to favor all people, including the elderly, authority figures, and those who are less fortunate. The easiest way to do this is to lead by example; be the person that you would like your kids to admire. When acts of kindness or compassion are performed automatically, sincerely, and consistently, children take notice and are more likely to repeat those actions. The older they get, the more responsibilities they can handle, and usually they enjoy pleasing others. Remind them to open doors for others to enter first, ask them to take care of minor household chores or yardwork for an elderly neighbor, teach them to use phrases such as “Thank You,” “You’re Welcome,” and “Pardon me.” Explain what personal boundaries are for themselves and others, helping them understand that guidelines and restrictions are generally implemented for the safety and comfort of everyone involved.

We naturally want our children to display compassion and kindness in every situation. While there is something to be said for kids who enjoy fashion or the arts, there is nothing wrong with those who enjoy playing in the dirt or with a football.

Everyone has their own gifts and interests. We should give them space to be unique and express themselves and show them how to do this without offending or disrespecting others. Raising polite children who are trustworthy, confident, and modest is a challenge in today’s culture. A parental figure or caregiver’s influence and presence are profound. These bright, smart, impressionable whippersnappers are watching every move and hanging onto every word, mentally recording every situation and your response or reaction.

Showing interest or curiosity about a child’s hobbies or sports makes them feel important and gives the adult a reason to engage with them on their level. Taking time to teach your child how to work on something or complete a task leads to great open interaction and bonding. If your child is willing to perform activities and work on projects with you, enjoy your time together. As long as you keep these moments light, fun, and positive, you and your child will have memories that will last forever.

Modern-day communication and manners are not as formal as in generations past. Most of our youth are less likely to speak with others in person, naturally choosing to utilize various forms of digital communication. They are less concerned with table manners and more aware of tolerance, inclusion, and respect for others’ differences or preferences. Guiding children in ways that they can become positive role models at any age will not only benefit them in youth but will also drive them to success in adulthood.

Matters of the Heart

here is no magic recipe for success when it comes to romance. Even when you think you have found “your person”, longevity and bliss aren’t promised. While we all have basic needs such as affection, security, companionship, and acceptance, how those needs are recognized, met, and maintained can vary from individual to individual. Although there are no easy solutions, genies in a bottle, or guarantees in the realm of love, studies prove that the most solid relationships are built primarily on friendship, mutual respect, patience, and open communication. These components must be evident along with daily, intentional effort from both parties to sustain a healthy, permanent relationship.

Friendship came first for Lexington’s lifelong sweethearts, Linda and Steve Cruea. Originally from Wisconsin, Linda’s family relocated several times until they settled in Ohio. On a warm, sunny day in 1953, fate allowed Linda and Steve’s paths to cross on a train at the Cincinnati Zoo. Linda’s recollection of that

day is a little fuzzy as she was only 5 years old, but she says the connection with Steve (and his family) was instant.

“We were only a few months apart in age, we had a lot in common with each other, and we became close friends almost immediately.”

The youngsters had no idea that they would be “thick as thieves” throughout their adolescent years, all the way into adulthood.

As the years passed, Steve and Linda became romantically attracted to each other at the beginning of their junior year of high school. It is often true that opposites attract--Linda was academic, shy, structured, and responsible by nature; Steve was more social, flexible, charismatic, and spontaneous. Linda remarks, “I remember sitting at a table with my girlfriends after a football game when Steve walked up and began talking. As I listened to him, it was a defining moment in my mind--he was a man that I wanted to get to know much better.” They began dating exclusively during their senior year, attending the prom and many other fun outings and activities together. “Our families

knew each other very well and would occasionally take us square dancing,” remarks Linda.

After graduation, Steve furthered his education in Florida while Linda attended college in Ohio. Although they were separated geographically, the lovebirds knew that they had something special together and were eager to see where it would take them. Steve eventually quit school and moved back to Ohio where he and Linda continued to develop and strengthen their bond. When the news arrived that Steve was going to be drafted and stationed in Vietnam, the young, vibrant couple eloped to Kentucky where they had a small, impromptu chapel wedding before his departure.

During Steve’s tour of duty, Linda continued her education and the lovers communicated verbally as often as possible. Linda was not fond of writing letters, and public/residential phones had not yet been introduced; they talked via live radio switchboard operators. Of course, their phone calls were not private, and the parties had to take turns talking and pausing as the signals were intermittently transmitted. Steve received a brief period of R&R during this time, and Linda was excited to have the opportunity to spend time with him in Hawaii. She soon finished college and Steve was dismissed early from his military position to finish his accounting degree in Ohio.

The couple began building their own family in 1970. Digital ultrasound technology was not yet available at that time, and they were ecstatic to welcome their beautiful daughter into the world.

The precious Cruea clan was thriving; 2 handsome sons would complete the family during the next 5-7 years. Linda worked part-time utilizing her marketing degree while taking care of the children. Steve continued to work while he attended school and secured several jobs in various capacities. He was a very smart, distinguished, attractive man who enjoyed talking to people, collaborating, and helping others as much as possible. Linda recalls that one of his most interesting positions was being the night auditor for a prestigious hotel in Dayton where he had the opportunity of meeting several celebrities and local dignitaries.

As Steve completed his secondary education he moved “up the ladder,” making huge advancements professionally, which required relocating the family several times. Eventually, his upper management position with Georgia Pacific brought them to South Carolina, where they made Lexington their permanent home.

“It was a much different town at that time,” Linda remembers.

“Apartments did not exist in Lexington then, so we rented until we were able to build a house in 1998.” The couple was pleased to have been able to raise their children and grandchildren in such a positive, nurturing, and supportive community.

Being married to the same person for 46 years is a huge accomplishment; each day delivers both challenges and triumphs.

Sadly, Steve lost a battle against cancer in 2016. Linda was by his side every step of the way, caring and giving all that she could to make his last moments as special as possible. He made a promise to her that he would “be there” for her birthday in late August so that she would not be alone. As the date approached, Steve was very weak and frail but lived until midnight on Linda’s birthday.

When asked what advice she would offer new couples, Linda explains, “You must work to overcome your differences and settle daily issues without fighting. Perseverance, forgiveness, and communication are of utmost importance,” she continues. “You must think of the other person first, be patient, and be flexible.

We NEVER considered divorce as an option.”

Love & Life “To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak” –Hopi Indian Saying

T

he Heritage at Lowman is a continuing-care retirement community located in Chapin. It is home to many vibrant retirees, including residents Craig & Millie Brandt. Every other month, Independent Living residents create and publish a community newsletter featuring a variety of topics, including love stories and life adventures of current residents. The following is one such love story: Millie Mahaffey and Craig Brandt met at Union United Methodist Church in Irmo. Millie, a schoolteacher, was a member of a singles group that was meeting for dinner and games.

Craig, a father of three, was visiting and wandered into the kitchen after dinner where he met Millie. He stayed and helped Millie clean up the church kitchen. On their second “date”, Craig took Millie, his children, and several of the children’s friends to the Carowinds theme park in Charlotte. Everyone squeezed into a station wagon rented from “Rent-A-Wreck”; ironically there were a multitude of vehicle mishaps during that trip.

Craig & Millie continued to date for a year before they officially tied the knot on August 8, 1987. In the days leading up to their nuptials, the couple had begun the process of moving

furniture into their new home, with Millie moving in first to begin arranging and organizing with the help of her mother. Craig was only able to partially assist in the move due to his allergies, as moving upholstered furniture and other stationary items often spreads dust particles. He had planned to sleep on the floor of his empty apartment before the wedding. Unfortunately, his symptoms worsened and he developed a severe sinus infection.

On the evening before the wedding, Millie’s mother insisted that Craig stay at the couple’s new house and sleep in a spare bed with the understanding that he was not to see or speak to Millie. On the morning of their wedding Craig’s health declined; he reluctantly went to a local Urgent Care clinic. With time being of the essence, Craig informed the staff that his wedding was going to begin in a little over an hour--he would either have to be treated immediately or leave. Thankfully he was treated quickly, and he arrived at the wedding on time. For their honeymoon, the couple spent a week in Jekyll Island, Georgia, culminating with an Air National Guard drill that same weekend in Savannah, Ga. Craig and Millie spent the first 29 years of marriage in their first house before moving to the Heritage at Lowman seven years ago. They enjoyed traveling to the beach and mountains and were delighted to find dancing venues in both areas--swing/shag dancing at the beach and polka/waltz dancing in the mountains.

Later, they both also became involved in square dancing.

Chickenbutt Donuts Tre and Sue Dabney

f you aren't familiar with Chapin's Chickenbutt Donuts, drop by the popular donut shop and meet owners Tre and Sue Dabney.

The whimsical business name comes from the beloved playground song, "Guess What, Chicken Butt?" In case you're wondering, chicken does not appear in the donut ingredients.

Although both Dabneys had extensive experience in the service industry, they took jobs at Amazon for six years after their children were born. "Grownup jobs," says Tre. But the couple's dream of opening their donut shop called for a change; their frequent discussions soon blossomed into an actual possibility. Tre says all the best ideas came from his wife, Sue, but of the two, he was the risk taker. Despite all their research and deliberations, making it happen was another thing altogether. Neither had worked at a donut shop, made donuts, or knew anything about the business. As prospective entrepreneurs, they explored eBay, bought a forty-year-old donut machine, hooked it up in the garage, and taught themselves how to make donuts. And they got good at it. Tre says, "Once we had money in the game, signed the lease, and crossed the threshold, we were totally committed and invested."

On November 1, 2023, the couple celebrates five years of operation. The business has been a rounding success. Tre says, "I love getting to the heart of what people want and what makes them happy. Having a sense of humor helps!" Customers consistently comment on the owners' gregarious and engaging personalities. One customer remarked,

“Everything about this business is five-star rating! From the friendly greeting with a smile, to the great donuts!”

The shop specializes in customers creating their own donuts. Tre says, "We are committed to having a broad base of things that you would put on a donut."

INGREDIENTS: 6 sweet onions, large, roughly chopped 4 tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil 2 tbsp. unsalted butter 1 tsp. of sugar

Peel and slice onions Add EVOO and butter to a 5-6 quart pot on medium heat.

Then split the EVOO and butter mixture into two separate portions.

3. Add onions and begin the caramelization process, stirring often, until the onions are softened (about 15 to 20 minutes).

4. Add the remaining EVOO and butter mixture and increase the heat to medium high for 20 to 40 minutes.

5. Add in the sugar, salt, and thyme, and cook until the onions are brown.

6. Add in the minced garlic and cook for about a minute.

7. Deglaze the pot with a dry white wine of your choice, being sure to scrape the bottom of the pot to capture the brown bits.

8. Add beef stock to the pot and bring it to a simmer. Cover the pot and reduce heat, still maintaining a simmer for about 30 minutes.

9. Add salt and pepper to taste.

10. To serve the soup, add to an oven-safe cup or bowl, float a toasted crostini and cover with provolone cheese.

11. Place the bowl in the oven to melt and brown the cheese.

Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the tomatoes cut-side up on the baking sheet, drizzle with 2 Tbsp of the olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 1 hour or until the edges begin to shrivel and the insides are still juicy.

Heat the remaining 2 tbsp. of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and 1/2 tsp. salt; cook until soft, about 8 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, vegetable broth, heavy cream and seasonings and simmer for 20 minutes.

Let cool slightly and pour the soup into a blender, working in batches if necessary. Blend until smooth. Add the basil and pulse until combined.

Garnish the soup with basil leaves and shredded Parmesan.

Serve and Enjoy!

Cook the meat and onions together until brown Drain most of the grease, leaving some in a large pot.

Pour all of the corn (do not drain) and the tomato sauce into the large pot.

Add potatoes and sugar.

ommunicating “I love you” remains the most powerful message we can share with another human being. I’m not talking about “Love you, mean it,” or “Love you more” or “Love ya.” Nothing replaces the power of looking into another person’s eyes and saying, “I love you.”

My great Aunt Mary (May) was tall and poised. Filterless, stern, and straightforward, when you visited Aunt May you had better have on your best behavior with hair combed and shirt tucked in.

It saddened me to overhear an adult saying, “I have never heard May express her love for another person.”

When I could finally drive, I visited Aunt May to make sure she knew I loved her. The visit was hilariously awkward. Leaving, I said, “I love you, Aunt May. I love what you mean to our family.” Her gaze fixed on mine, and she said, “Thank you.”

For the next six years, I made a mission of telling Aunt May that I loved her and followed it each time with why I loved her.

One afternoon, I dropped by her home with fresh tomatoes from my daddy’s garden and said, “I love you, Aunt May. I look forward to eating tomato pie with you.” She reached out, touched my hand, and said, “I love you, too, sweetie.”

Aunt May told me she loved me for the rest of her life. She and I enjoyed many chocolate shakes at the local Dairy Queen. Aunt May bought me a subscription to Reader’s Digest. She made me a delicious chocolate layer cake for my birthday.
