other’s Day and Father’s Day have always been special occasions in my family. When we were little, it meant a time of rest and relaxation for Mama and Dad. It meant bringing them little handmade cards and gifts that they would happily display on the refrigerator or on the table. When I got married, I was blessed to have a motherin-law whom I love, and thankfully, she loves me, too. Now, we celebrate with dinners, flowers, cards, and edible arrangements for parents and grandparents while enjoying each moment together.

Next came the birth of my children. My daughter and son are grown now, but I, too, still have those sweet little handmade cards and gifts that they created with all the innocence and love children have for their parents. I am so proud of the adults they have become, and this new milestone ushered me into another phase of parenthood.

This is not necessarily a bad thing; it is simply different. Instead of sharing about their playground adventures, they tell me about their days at work. And I listen to them tease each other as only siblings can, and I think: FINALLY THEY ARE FRIENDS! It makes me so happy to know that this time has arrived. Do not get me wrong, they have always loved each other, but the teasing would often turn into fussing like it does with most siblings. This new part is refreshing to say the least, and I am thankful to be around them to see it firsthand.

Not to rush things, but I am truly looking forward to the time when they have their own children and become parents themselves. I tell my husband, Brian, all the time that when I do have a grandbaby, the world needs to look out because he or she is going to be so spoiled. He laughs and says that, after a day spent with us—loading them up on sugar and caffeine—we can always send them home!

Buy, Sell, or Build Your Team Matters

he secret’s out—Lexington County is a wonderful place to call home! According to the U.S. Census Bureau, this area has experienced a 15.7-percent population growth in the last ten years. These figures represent individuals who have chosen to relocate to the area, and that decision often involves finding long-term housing. Whether the goal is to buy, sell, or build a home, the experience will be much more gratifying if the future homeowner does their homework ahead of time and selects the right team to assist in the process.

“Lexington offers an exceptional cost of living and contributes to a strong economic base here in the Midlands,” says Lisa T. Moore, a Coldwell Banker top-producing realtor and longtime Lexington County resident. “We are fortunate to have thriving communities filled with churches, programs for children and families that include a great variety of activities

When buying and selling a home, Moore assists individuals and families with this major undertaking, and their involvement makes the process run more smoothly. For instance, she can help buyers and sellers navigate the local housing market and position her clients for success. Moore can assist by negotiating contracts, inspections, and appraisals in both roles of representation.

Moore strongly believes that “you never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” In addition to routine maintenance, she can recommend less expensive improvements, such as landscaping, fresh paint, and better lighting, which make property more marketable. A real estate attorney is another important resource in the home-buying and selling process, and Lexington Attorney James McCutchen of McCutchen McLean, LLC, has handled real estate transactions while serving the Lexington community for the past 15 years. The responsibilities of firms such as this include preparing legal documents, verifying that a clear title is transferred, and ensuring the buyers have title insurance to protect their assets. They also review prior surveys and deeds to confirm there are no title defects, potential liens, or judgement liens attached to the property.

In addition to educating clients on town, county, and state requirements and taxes, real estate attorneys can advise them about new laws and regulations that may apply to or benefit them. Following the closing, attorneys distribute sale money to real estate agents and toward lender fees, closing costs, and any mortgage, repair, and lien payments.

Attorney McCutchen recommends that home buyers take time to select the right local real estate agent, lender, and closing attorney when buying and selling. “Do your homework, make sure they have experience in real estate closing, tax issues, probate issues, and that they know the local market,” he advises. “It can be the Wild West out here, and when sellers receive multiple offers, they often look at the real estate agent.

Sometimes that can affect whether you get the contract or not.”

When building a new home, attorneys also provide essential services during the construction process. If required by the lender, they assist in an extra closing and help clients understand the construction loan terms. For example, an attorney would inform home builders that lenders usually lock rates after the first year of construction and then issue a fixed rate or variable rate loan. The construction process includes paying contractors in phases with heavy lender involvement, which are financial details a homeowner building their first homes should understand before beginning the process.

Seventeen years ago, Emily and Joe Wright founded The Wright Group Construction company, a business that specializes in creating custom homes, as well as remodels and additions.

According to Emily Wright, choosing the right builder makes all the difference within this process. “We work hard to minimize issues, use trusted vendors and subcontractors, and work to resolve any issues quickly,” she says.

As an experienced builder, Wright also says that there are several important factors to consider when beginning this complex process. For example, municipal regulations may dictate the placement of the house on the property. Additionally, fees for utilities should fit within the homeowner’s budget, but if those services are not available, a well and septic tank must be installed, which requires guidance from the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

“When choosing a house plan,” Wright adds, “it's important to consider not only what will fit on your lot, but also how much square footage and what type of layout will work best for your lifestyle.” These selections can impact the price, so homebuilders are cautioned to think about the end goal—whether this will be

a “forever home” or an investment to sell in a few years.

With a construction loan, “a certain amount of work must be completed to be able to turn in a draw and get money off of the loan,” Wright explains. When budgeting for the project, she also advises adding 10-15 percent for unexpected contingencies.

Wright concludes, “Choosing to build can be a challenging process, but the beautiful custom home you create is worth it in the end.”

own journey, Jesse hoped the book would create conversations about cancer, show how people can help, and offer hope through the process.

What makes this book even more remarkable is that it’s entirely a family creation. “Everything in the book, between content and illustration, is all us,” Jesse says. Jesse’s son, Graham, who is now 13, created all the artwork for the book when he was just 12. This included illustrating the story on every page, designing the front and back covers, and contributing to every design element of the publication. The younger children were involved, too, as Jesse would read drafts to them, and they would offer feedback about what they thought.

The Harmon Family How They Turned Grief Into a Gift of Hope

veryone knows the story of the tortoise and the hare. The slow, steady turtle wins the race, not because he’s fast, but because he refuses to give up. But there’s a question that the story never answers: How did the turtle learn not to give up? For the Harmon family, that question became the foundation of a children’s book that would honor a mother’s courage, help a family heal, and offer hope to others walking through the darkest valleys.

Sarah Harmon faced a nearly two-year battle with colon cancer with faith and determination that left a lasting mark on everyone who witnessed it. Throughout her journey, she documented her experiences on CaringBridge and YouTube, sharing not just the struggles but also the hope that sustained her family.

Her husband Jesse watched helplessly as his wife fought with everything she had.

“It was a real struggle early on,” Jesse recalls. “None of it really makes sense.” He also faced questions no parent wants to answer: How do you tell your children their mom has cancer? How do you explain what cancer is to a six-year-old?

Sarah passed away on March 21, 2025, leaving behind Jesse and their children, but in the midst of their grief, the family found a way to honor her memory while helping others who face similar battles. The book they published, titled My Mom Is My Hero and Her Journey to #Fighthard Against Cancer, began as a way for Jesse to answer his children’s questions and put a purpose to their pain. “It was a way for us to process what we were going through,” Jesse explains, “to put pen to paper about feelings we had but also to, hopefully, help other people in similar situations.”

The story follows a character named Tank the Turtle, who learns perseverance by watching his mother battle cancer. Since the narrative mirrors the Harmon family’s

The book even comes with a plushy pillow of Tank the Turtle. However, the first prototype of the character didn’t pass muster with the two younger children.

“Dad, this is horrible. You need to do something different,” they told him, so Graham came up with ideas for a redesign, and this second version is what accompanies the book today.

Ultimately, this collaborative process gave each child a way to honor their mother and process their feelings—they weren’t just reading a story about loss and perseverance; they were helping create it.

At the heart of the book is a message that sustained the Harmon family through their darkest moments: Trust God and never give up. Relatedly, Sarah’s favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 3:56, which says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” That verse became the backbone of how the family faced each day.

“Whenever life throws you the craziest curveballs, where do you go?” Jesse asks.

“We want people to see that no matter the

circumstances, no matter the pain, trust in the Lord with all your heart. That’s what we want the message to be about through this whole process.”

Faith wasn’t just something the family talked about—it carried them through nearly two years of treatment, uncertainty, and loss. And it continues to sustain them as they share Sarah’s story, as the Harmon family has turned their grief into active outreach. They speak at churches and Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings, sharing the book and its message.

family is equally committed to giving books away to families in need. Last October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they set a goal to give away one book a day for a total of 30 families facing cancer. “We ended up giving away 80-something books in the month of October,” Jesse shares.

This past March was especially significant, as this is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and it marks the one-year anniversary of Sarah’s passing. Because of this, the family is planning additional initiatives—ways to honor her memory while continuing to support others facing cancer battles—but they have not yet announced these plans publicly.

Although Sarah’s battle with cancer ended about a year ago, the legacy of her life continues. Through every copy of the book given to a family who has heard the words “you have cancer” for the first time, Tank the Turtle’s enduring example demonstrates the life lessons that the Harmon children learned from their mother’s experience: that perseverance is born from faith, that hope can sustain us through the hardest battles, and that even in loss, love creates something lasting.

When Jesse started writing this book, he was trying to answer his children’s questions and process his own pain, but what emerged was something bigger: a resource for families, a tribute to a remarkable woman, and a testimony to a faith that does not waver, even when circumstances seem impossible. My Mom Is My Hero isn’t just the title of a children’s book; it’s a declaration that rings true for the Harmon children and for countless other families who have found comfort and courage in its pages. Sarah may be gone, but through this book, her message endures: Trust God with all your heart, and never, ever give up.

Mosquito Joe of Lake Murray Their Quest to Cut Pests

M

osquito Joe of Lake Murray, a local, award-winning pest control company, was launched by the Powell family in 2015 because they were personally sold on the franchise’s product and approach, which are effective, eco-friendly, and customer-oriented. The business still thrives today, and its goal is to continue to provide satisfactory services to the greater Lexington community and beyond.

Originally from Virginia, Trey and Cindy Powell moved to Columbia in 2003 to develop a franchise for preparing income tax, but by 2015, they were looking for a different type of business to invest in. When a friend who was affiliated with Mosquito Joe encouraged them to consider their company, “I kind of laughed at her and said, ‘I don't think I can get excited about pest control, but if you can kill some bugs, come on over, because I’ve got a million of them,’” Trey recalls.

About a week later, a technician from Mosquito Joe in Columbia arrived at the Powell’s lakefront property to treat their house and yard for insects. They were so successful at eliminating several types of annoying pests, Trey told four of his neighbors about their services, and they,

too, scheduled treatments that same week.

Because of their effectiveness, Trey paused to reflect upon his assumptions about the company, and it wasn’t long before he contacted his associate to say: “Tell me about this franchise. Why have I never heard of this? People need to know

about this—this is amazing!”

She responded to his inquiry by explaining that treating outside insects was the latest innovation in pest control, and in about a month, Trey and Cindy had decided to launch a Mosquito Joe in the Lake Murray area. Shortly after, the

Powell family moved to Lexington where their fledgling company was founded.

“We got started, the community embraced us,” Trey says, “and we just started growing like wildfire.”

Although they began with just one administrative person and a technician to treat the properties, today, they have a staff of 25 with 4 in the sales and customer service department and 19 technicians in the field. They also own a fleet of 16 vehicles, some of which are used by a second branch that they now own and operate in Augusta, Georgia.

In the beginning, Mosquito Joe of Lake Murray was licensed to only treat mosquitoes, but over time, their technology evolved.

“We're really excited at this point to continue expanding our business into offering these other services,” Trey says. “The services that we offer are mosquito, flea and tick, fire ant elimination, [and] home pest defense, which is general pest control to keep roaches and ants out of your house or business. We do termites… and we do rodent control, which is designed to keep mice and rats out of your house.” Cindy adds that they also treat a lot of lake houses, docks, and boats for spider infestations.

According to Trey, Mosquito Joe strives to be a company that is “as easy to do business with as possible.” One of the ways they achieve this is by not requiring contracts with clients, and services are based on their customers’ needs, the climate, and the life cycle of insects. For example, mosquito control is typically done every three weeks between late February and mid-November, while fire ants are treated annually. Other exterminator services are offered yearround on a bi-monthly or quarterly basis.

“We believe that we want to earn your business the right way, every single time. We have a done-right guarantee on all services.

If they're not happy, or they're having any kind of breakthrough, we do it again for free,” Trey explains. “I believe that every business is in business to help people,

and I don't see us as any different than that.”

Trey says that communication is the key to strong customer relations, and it begins with scheduling the appointment. “We are never going to show up unannounced,” he says. The technicians text and email before arriving, and the client can reply to and communicate with the technician if they need to provide special instructions before the visit. “It just gives them peace of mind that the technician who's there cares and will do everything that they can to resolve their problems,” he continues. After the job is finished, and before leaving the property, the technician will send another follow-up message to explain what work was done.

“At the end of the day,” explains Trey, “we're leaving a product that you can't see, you can't smell, you can't taste, and the only way you know it's working is that you don't have bugs.” Furthermore, when customers tell him they are happy to be buying outdoor furniture for the first time in years, Trey knows that Mosquito Joe’s problem-solving skills have been helpful and successful.

In 2024, U.S. News and World Report selected Mosquito Joe as the most eco-

friendly pest control company in the country. When requested, the company even offers a “100-percent eco-friendly” option, but they always endeavor to use the most effective and environmentally safe products available to eliminate pests, while avoiding “collateral damage” to beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

Locally, the company was named “Small Business of the Year” in 2017 by the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, an organization in which the Powells are actively involved. Also, the Lake Murray branch of Mosquito Joe, which services the areas of Lexington, Irmo, Chapin, West Columbia, and beyond, was selected by the umbrella company as the “National Franchisee of the Year,” out of hundreds of branches throughout the United States.

Fishing with Dad Wrong Time, Wrong Place —A Success Story

imply put, summers in South Carolina are HOT with temperatures sometimes rising to the 100-degree mark. For the fisherman, the sweltering climate creates its own set of unique challenges, and at Lake Murray, the warm-bath waters force the fish to dive down deep, in search of relief and sustenance. On any particular summer weekend, experienced fishermen arrive early to beat the heat in hopes of hooking a few bass. As the sun rises, their boats are seen floating in the middle of the lake with their lines submerged in the water.

Thus, it’s no surprise that the idea of going fishing at two o’clock in the afternoon would never cross my mind, but this would not necessarily be the case for my enthusiastic sons, who are nine and six years old. On a bright Sunday morning, I was awakened unreasonably early by the nine-year-old who was practicing with the new “bait casting” reel he had received as a recent birthday gift. When he hooked the crawfish jig in the comforter on my bed, that was my sign to change course.

“Dad, the sun is up. Let’s go!” he begged.

“Bubs, we have church, and your brother is still asleep,” I reminded him.

When a big sigh heaved from his little lungs, I decided to task him with something doable to keep his spirits up. I took him outside, pitched a paper plate in the yard, and suggested, “Son, while I make breakfast, try to hit the plate with your bait.”

As I pulled open the refrigerator door and grabbed the canned cinnamon rolls, the back door burst open. Sure enough, the plate was successfully hooked, and his face radiated the

elation of a child who has just accomplished something for the first time. I was filled with pride, but I also knew my time was running out before we had to get out on that lake.

After eating breakfast, attending church, and grabbing a quick lunch, we were finally ready to gather up our gear and head to the boat.

“Dad,” my oldest exclaimed, his excitement barely contained, “I got our life jackets, the sunscreen, our fishing hats, sunglasses, the boat keys, and the safety switch lanyard. I got all the rods ready to go and a cooler packed.”

As I thanked him for helping, a concern arose within my brain: “All the rods?

Sure enough, he had piled every rod we own into the boat, so we spent the next few minutes sorting through them and narrowing down our choices to the ones that were best suited for our task.

Finally ready to go, I turned the key in the ignition, and before we even pulled away from the dock, my son had begun plotting: “Dad, what lure do you think would work best?”

“Bubs, its two o’clock and 900 degrees,” I reminded him, “so we need to be tossing a herring-looking bait at a point somewhere out in the middle of the lake.”

“But, Dad,” he immediately countered, “I don’t want to go out there. I want to go where we saw that one log in the water a few days ago.”

Now, I usually have a good memory, but his description of “that one log… a few days ago” was a little vague. Having grown up on this lake, I could show you where 1,000 such logs

might be located, so on that day, I had no clue which one he was talking about.

As my younger son commenced deejaying the sound system on the boat, my oldest climbed onto my lap and assured me, “Dad, I know where it is.”

Slowly, we idled into the lake, and sure enough, after a 10-minute ride, we pulled into a cove where my son excitedly pointed out the area where he wanted fish. With some concern, I noted that the waters there might only be about eight feet deep at the most. Needless to say, I had to contain my this-isn’tgoing-to-work thoughts and, instead, reverted to the trolling motor.

“Dad, I’m thinking I want to throw a crankbait in here,” my son suggested.

Knowing that probably wasn’t the best option, I mildly advised, “You might want to grab the biggest worm or jig in the tackle box because, if there is a fish in here, he will not want to exert a whole bunch of energy into feeding right now.”

Without missing a beat, he scooted over to the container to select a lure. After setting my younger son’s line with a cricket, I then commenced helping my older son find the right kind of bait. As I sifted through the tackle box, I located an old five-inch grub worm attached to a shaky head weight and hook. I handed it to him, and without hesitation, he tied it to his line and flipped it into the water.

A few minutes later, my younger son was calling for another cricket, and as I made my way to where he was, my oldest started frantically yelling: “Dad! DAD!!” As I turned around, I saw that his brand-new rod was furiously arching over the side of the boat as he battled what appeared to be a fish of improbable proportions. In the struggle, he reeled madly, the fish jumped, and he screamed. I ran to assist and almost fell overboard wrestling the monster onto the boat.

At the end of the day, my son was the happiest child on Lake Murray because his dad had helped him wrangle the biggest largemouth bass that he had ever caught on his own. So, the moral of this story is: The next time your son or daughter wants to fish during the hottest time of the day on a South Carolina lake, just do it. Grab the required equipment and muster up some optimism because you might just end up having the most memorable “wrong place at the wrong time” experience you ever had.

Lighthouse for Life Radiating Hope, Freedom, and a Future

L

ighthouse for Life, a local nonprofit dedicated to eradicating human trafficking, defines this crime as “the force, fraud, or coercion of an individual for commercial sex or forced labor in exchange for something of value (money, clothing, food, etc.).” As a faith-based organization, Lighthouse for Life bases their rejection of human trafficking on the biblical belief that all of humanity is created by God and has been made in His image.

Social media, commercials, and the entertainment industry fuel the sexualization of human beings, and some people are willing to pay money to fulfill their selfish desires at the expense of others. Some of the risk factors for a potential victim include a difficult home life, lack of a personal support system, previous abuse, poverty, and addiction. Predators are experts at using these vulnerabilities to manipulate and control others, and the perpetrators of this behavior can be anyone—neighbors, classmates, relatives, or potential employers.

More common than one might realize, human trafficking happens everywhere— even in South Carolina. The state’s Human Trafficking Task Force Annual Report for 2025, recently released by Attorney General Alan Wilson, revealed that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigated 315 related tips last year, which included more than 300 potential victims, and most of these involved minors.

SLED’s data also disclosed that Lexington and Richland are both of the top five counties in the state where these cases were reported.

In February of 2025, Lighthouse for Life partnered with Fisher Films, a Columbia-based video production studio, to create a documentary entitled “A Slave in Your Backyard.” This film, which has been viewed by thousands on streaming services like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Tubi, “showcases what trafficking looks like in South Carolina by highlighting Heather Pagan’s personal story, as well as many others,” says Lisa Kejr, the chief executive officer of Lighthouse for Life. “It is now making its way through the prison systems and providing a gateway for individuals to come forward with their own stories and seek help!”

Lighthouse for Life, one of the leading organizations in the state combatting this detrimental crime, has adopted a mission to fight back by educating the community and empowering survivors to break free.

In addition to providing informative resources online, training service providers, and sharing with the public through presentations statewide, Lighthouse for Life offers valuable assistance directly to those who are at risk or have experienced human trafficking personally.

To empower survivors, Lighthouse for Life oversees several different operations.

“In June of 2024,” shares Kejr, “we had the grand opening of The Harbor, our drop-in center for survivor support. This is a location off of St. Andrews Road that we want to be known within the community. It is equipped to provide a warm meal, shower and laundry capabilities, life skills and trauma support classes, community gatherings, and advocacy support!”

After its opening, Lighthouse’s Survivor Support Team was able to assist a woman called “BJ” as she transitioned from a trafficking situation. Upon arriving at The Harbor, she was able to enjoy rest, safety, and warm meals; use their laundry and other facilities; and enroll in a class at the home. During her case investigation, Lighthouse transported her to a safe hotel room and provided her with clothing, groceries, and “a freedom bag,” which contains basic necessities. Because of

Lighthouse’s involvement, BJ said, “Just wanted to say thank you for everything you doing for me. I really do appreciate it.

These people like you that give people like me hope.”

While the Harbor welcomes female adults, another safe house they operate, known as Karis Home, is open to minors aged 12 to 21. Moreover, Lighthouse for Life’s Survivor Support Program is available for any situation or individual related to trafficking. “In 2025 alone, our Survivor Support Program came alongside 65 survivors, and 11 individuals who were high risk,” Kejr notes.

In 2025, the organization also established several strategic partnerships, including one with another nonprofit known as “Freedom Signal.” This tech company has created software that allows advocates like Lighthouse for Life to send secure text messages—directly and proactively—to those who are being exploited in online advertisements.

“Through the use of this tool, we were able to engage in over 200 conversations last year, and we look forward to more this year with the hopes that those conversations will eventually lead to lives changed!” says Kejr.

Relatedly, Lighthouse for Life is dedicated to training and providing information about human trafficking.

Later this year, the nonprofit will “unveil a video training series for counselors and other direct services providers that will assist them as they seek to come along survivors in an understanding traumainformed way,” explains Kejr. Currently, Lighthouse is also collaborating with the South Carolina Department of Corrections to offer an empowering curriculum entitled “Ending the Game” in the state’s women’s prisons.

To bring awareness to the general public, “We are always open to any opportunities to come meet with individuals, either one on one or in any group capacity, to help them understand the realities of human trafficking better,” Kejr states.

In 2025, the South Carolina Human Trafficking Task Force launched the South Carolina Safe House Certification Program for service providers who assist human trafficking survivors. In fact, South Carolina is the first state in the nation to implement such a requirement for these kinds of programs, and Lighthouse for

Life was one of four organizations in the state that completed this certification.

Mayoral Accolades

By Marilyn Thomas Hazel Livingston Tribute Every year, the Lexington Woman’s Club, a volunteer service organization that has invested in the local community for nearly 70 years, sponsors an award to recognize a “Woman of Distinction.”

Recently, Lexington’s mayor, Hazel Livingston, was the recipient of this notable accolade. In response to this award, she states, “I am deeply humbled and honored to have been chosen by the Lexington Woman’s Club as the Woman of Distinction for 2025–2026.” “[I] had no idea I would be receiving such a special honor that evening at the Lexington Women’s Club meeting,” she recalls. “When my name was called, and I was presented with a dozen beautiful roses and an engraved crystal vase, I was truly surprised.”

In addition to being a female Lexington resident, the qualifications for this tribute include demonstrating outstanding character and leadership, and a loving commitment to serving the county, state, and community through personal and professional endeavors.

“The women of this organization quietly do so much for our community,” continues Mayor Livingston. “Their dedication, generosity, and servant hearts make a real difference in the lives of so many. To be recognized by a group of women who give so much of themselves to help others means more than I can express.”

One major event the Woman’s Club sponsors is a spring golf tournament that raises funds for those in need throughout the local area. Organizations they have supported through this activity and other volunteer work include Camp Kemo, Mission Lexington, Sexual Trauma Centers of the Midlands, Chris Myer’s Children’s Home, Samaritan’s Well, Lexington County Library, and local law enforcement agencies.

Mayor Livingston expresses her sincere gratitude to the Woman’s Club for this honor, and adds, “Thank you for all you do to make Lexington such a wonderful place to live, serve, and call home. I am grateful to be part of a community that cares so deeply for one another.”

Mayor Bill Danielson Appointment If “two heads are better than one,” then certainly a group of thousands of municipal leaders meeting together to discuss concerning issues is a tremendously valuable resource. Such is the National League of Cities (NLC), a nonprofit organization that brings together those in leadership roles from cities, towns, and villages throughout the United States, with the common goal to improve the quality of life for those who dwell in their districts.

Within that umbrella organization is a smaller assembly known as the Small Cities Council, a networking subgroup specifically designed to attract officials from cities with populations of 50,000 or less. Irmo Mayor Bill Danielson was recently appointed to the NLC’s Small Cities Council.

“Being appointed to the NLC’s Small Cities Council is important because it ensures that towns like Irmo have a seat at the national table,” stated Mayor Danielson. “Our community’s challenges and opportunities are unique, and this Council gives us the ability to shape solutions, share best practices, and bring resources home that directly strengthen our local economy and quality of life.”

In November 2025, Mayor Danielson attended the NLC’s annual conference in Salt Lake City, along with thousands of other leaders from across the United States.

While there, one of the intriguing ideas he learned about was a city drone program, which is an economical, high-tech public safety measure that employs drones in emergency situations. These drones, which are stationed on the roof of a police or fire facility, can be dispatched immediately to the scene and are able to capture critical information and relay it to the first responders before they even arrive. Several practical applications include tracking suspects, identifying weapons, locating missing children, and assessing a fire.

Annually, the NLC also hosts a threeday activity entitled the “Congressional City Conference” in Washington, D.C., where nearly 3,000 members gather. In addition to attending panel sessions where mayors from major cities share their experiences and insight, NLC members are also granted opportunities to speak with the congressional representatives of their region.

Mayor Danielson, who attended this momentous event, explains, “My primary reason for going up there was to meet with our elected officials that represent us here in the Midlands and the state.”

Thus, he was able to have meaningful communications with key staff members of Representative Joe Wilson and Senators Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham.

During the latter meeting, issues about earmarked funds for municipal projects were clarified, and as a result, Mayor Danielson is now confident that the groundbreaking for Irmo’s new town hall will commence this summer.

In fact, they are part of the very liberty that those who served fought to protect.

But beneath the celebration lies a deeper story, one written in sacrifice.

For the families of the fallen, Memorial Day is not a long weekend. It is a sacred day of remembrance.

I have stood at military funerals where the air is still and heavy with grief and honor.

A casket draped in the American flag rests before loved ones whose hearts are breaking. Then the bugle sounds. TAPS. Those twenty-four haunting notes echo across the field, and in that moment, time seems to pause. Every note carries a story of courage, duty, and sacrifice.

The Empty Chair

he chair is empty. It sits quietly at the table, unnoticed by many, yet it carries the weight of a life once lived in service to something greater. Memorial Day is about that empty chair.

As a veteran with more than 26 years of service, I am often asked about the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It is a fair question, but the distinction is profound. Veterans Day honors those who served. Memorial Day honors those who never came home.

It is about the son, the daughter, the brother, the sister, the father, the mother, and the friend who raised their hand to serve and paid the ultimate price. It is about families who waited for a return that never came.

During my years in uniform, I served alongside many remarkable men and women.

Most of us were fortunate enough to return home to our families. But I also experienced the painful reality of losing a soldier, one of our own, whose life ended in service to this nation. His absence is a reminder to me that behind every Memorial Day tribute is a real person, a real family, and a sacrifice that cannot be replaced.

For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer. Grills are lit, families gather, and communities celebrate the long weekend. There is nothing wrong

The American flag that covered the casket is folded carefully—thirteen folds, each representing principles that reflect the values upon which our nation stands.

When the folding is complete, the flag is handed to the next of kin with quiet words that carry immeasurable weight.

“On behalf of a grateful nation…” No words can erase the absence that follows.

That service member is gone, but their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Memorial Day calls us to pause and remember the cost of the freedoms we often take for granted. It reminds us that liberty is not free; it has always been secured by the courage and commitment of those willing to defend it.

Across memorials and military cemeteries, you may notice a powerful symbol—an empty chair placed in quiet honor. That chair represents the fallen hero who will never again take their seat among us. It is a solemn reminder.

Someone gave everything.

This Memorial Day, enjoy your time with family and friends. Celebrate the freedoms that define our nation. But take a moment, just a moment, to remember the heroes whose sacrifice made it possible. And when you see that empty chair, remember who should be sitting there.

More Than Cookies The Heart of Girl Scouts

very January, you start to see them—tables set up outside grocery stores, bright green vests, eager faces, and the familiar call: “Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?” For most people, that is where the story begins and ends—a box of Thin Mints, a smile, and a transaction. But for the girls standing behind those tables, and the troop leaders and parents who support them, the story runs so much deeper.

I know this firsthand. I was a Girl Scout myself, earning badges through the Junior level. Today, I serve as a parent, a Brownie troop leader, and the “cookie mom” for our troop. My connection to Girl Scouting spans decades and roles, but my perspective has never been sharper than it is right now, watching the next generation of girls discover what this organization can do for them.

A Troop Built on Community Our troop meets at Lexington United Methodist, and it is anything but typical. With roughly 30 girls ranging from kindergarteners all the way through 12th grade, we operate as a multi-level troop. This structure creates something you rarely see in organized activities for young people: genuine cross-age mentorship. Older girls lead by example. Younger girls aspire. Everyone belongs.

That sense of belonging is the quiet engine behind everything we do. It is what makes a shy second-grader raise her hand for the first time, and what inspires a high schooler to step up and guide a Brownie through a new challenge. In a world where girls are navigating social pressure, academic stress, and the constant noise of growing up, having a place that is genuinely and unconditionally theirs matters more than most people realize.

Girls Who Take Action One of the things I am most proud of is how our girls not only talk about making a difference, but they also actually do it. During cookie season, which runs from

January through March, our troop collects donations to send boxes of cookies to active-duty soldiers and local first responders. It is a small gesture with a big heart behind it, and the girls take it seriously.

The impact does not stop there.

One of our girls noticed that students at her school were struggling because they could not keep their migraine medication with them during the day.

She turned that observation into action, petitioning school administrators for a policy change. Another girl recognized that many of her classmates needed sensory support and created fidget kits for her local school. These are not adultled projects; they are girl-led solutions to real problems, which is exactly what Girl Scouts is designed to produce.

There is also a quieter principle guiding everything our troop does: Wherever we go, we leave it better than we find it. It sounds simple, but it speaks to a mindset of care and responsibility that these girls are building at a young age.

A Space to Try, Fail, and Grow As a Brownie leader working with second and third graders, I have come to see that Girl Scouts give girls something they often cannot find elsewhere: a place where they are allowed to try, to fail, and to grow without judgment. In school, grades define success. In sports, scores do. In Girl Scouts, the process is the point.

The girls in my troop vote on which badges to pursue, which service projects to take on, and how they want their meetings to run. That ownership is transformative. When a child has a genuine voice in shaping her own experience, her investment in the outcome changes completely. I have watched the quietest girls in the room become the most enthusiastic contributors by year’s end, not because someone pushed them, but because they found their footing in a space that made room for them.

What stands out most is the confidence. When a girl earns a badge, she worked hard for, or helps a fellow Girl Scout accomplish a difficult task, something happens in how she sees herself. That shift from “I can’t” to “I did” is the real product of Girl Scouts, and it stays with her long after the meeting ends.

The Cookie Program: More Than Meets the Eye No mention about Girl Scouts would be complete without an honest look at the cookie program. As Cookie Mom, I have had a front-row seat to what happens when a young girl walks up to a stranger, introduces herself, explains what she is working toward, and asks for support. For many of these girls, this is the first time they have done anything like this.

The cookie program is, in practice, a hands-on business course.

The girls set goals, track their progress, handle money, practice communication, and learn to handle rejection gracefully. They discover that effort has real consequences and that a goal shared with teammates is more motivating than one pursued alone.

The funds raised go directly back into the troop. We use them for badges, supplies, service-project materials, and experiences that make Scouting memorable. When the girls set a sales goal together and then get to enjoy something they helped make possible, the pride is visible. They built that. And they know it.

An Invitation Girl Scouts has been shaping young women for more than a century. The green vest, the badges, the cookies are the symbols most people recognize. But the substance is harder to see from the outside. It is a girl learning to lead herself, advocate for others, and believe she is capable of making a difference.

If you have a daughter, granddaughter, niece, or neighbor who could use a place like that, I encourage you to investigate your local troop. And the next time you see a table of girls outside your grocery store, stop a moment longer than usual.

Ask them what they are working toward, what badge they are chasing, or what cause they are supporting. You might be surprised by the answer, and even more surprised by the confidence and conviction of the girl giving it.

Spoon the drippings over the fish before serving with angel hair pasta, rice, or toasted bread to soak up the flavorful juices and enjoy!

MANGO SALSA: 1 ripe mango, diced ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped Juice of 1 lime Pinch of salt SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Small tortillas, warmed Fresh cilantro Lime wedges DIRECTIONS: Season the fish with paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper, and then drizzle with lime juice. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the fish and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden and flaky. Remove from heat and break fish into large pieces. In a separate bowl, combine mango, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, and salt. Toss gently to combine.

Fill warm tortillas with fish portions and top with mango salsa and fresh cilantro. Garnish with lime wedges for extra zing!

Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil for 5-6 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through and the glaze is caramelized. Baste once more during broiling to enhance the flavor. Enjoy!

The State Capitals Test

I

n the 1960s, the State of Georgia decided that fifth graders should learn the names of our 50 states and each state’s capital. In addition, everything had to be spelled correctly. I thought it was cruel to slide in a spelling test as part of this nightmarish exercise.

I was not a great student, having already proved that with a record-setting 36 on a major science test. I enjoyed the information presented in class, but I didn’t enjoy studying.

I was too easily distracted by a library book.

I had said nothing to my parents about the capitals test, believing I had practiced enough in class to do well on it. Fate had other ideas. Unbeknownst to me, my mom ran into a friend on the day before the test. During conversation, her friend mentioned the test and her own son’s nightly preparation for it. This ignited panic in my mom.

“Are you ready for the capitals test?” she asked “Yes,” I said, believing that I was ready.

Later that evening, she called me into her bedroom for a quick oral review on our nation’s 50 capitals.

“Georgia,” she said.

“Atlanta,” I said.

And that’s as far as I got. Hysterics ensued. She stormed out of her own bedroom, leaving me there with a handful of flash cards.

I considered jumping out the window.

Soon, my dad appeared at the door and shut it. My dad was not a patient man. A few years before, I had watched him come close to a nervous breakdown, teaching me to catch a pop fly.

He sat down on the bed across from me, and for the next three hours, he calmly and gently taught me the state capitals. It was a very late night.

After school the next day, I rushed out to the farm to tell my dad of our perfect score, because I believed it was his victory, too.

He smiled and said, “Please don’t wait until the last minute again.” Later, we shared an ice cream sandwich together in celebration.

My late dad was a hardworking blue-collar man who loved us and made sure we knew it through his words, his time, and a hard word or a gentle hand, whichever we needed. As I became a dad, he never missed a chance to share how proud he was of me.

Happy Father’s Day to all the men who are blessed to be called Dad.
