HAPPY NEW YEAR!! There’s just something about January and February that feels like a reset button.

The holidays settle down, clean calendars and planners come out to notate upcoming meetings and events, and suddenly we’re all focusing on goals for the new year. I love that energy—it’s that spark that keeps all of us at Our Town excited about what is to come.

As 2026 gets underway, I’m reminded again how special our community and the people in it truly are. Every month, I get the privilege of sitting down with local businesses, snapping photos around town, and hearing stories from those who live and work here about why they think our community is so special and different ways we can all contribute. And let me just say, the heart, hustle, and creativity right here at home never fails to inspire me and pique my interest in …well, our town.

In this issue, it is all about growth. From a family-owned business evolving with the times to the Home Series that will be a main feature in 2026; there’s no shortage of good information to kick off the year. That’s what I love about publishing a magazine that is truly focused on the community: we get to provide information that readers want with resources they can trust, found right outside in their own back yard.

A New Year Together: Why Community Matters More Than Resolutions

Young Love

That Lasts a Lifetime

wo juniors met at a high school dance on a warm evening in the spring of 1968. Minutes before, she had complained to her cousin that there were no “good boys” in attendance. He wasn’t looking to meet anyone special that night. Their single dance together was tender, although brief, and the night might have been forgotten if not for another chance meeting.

A month later, she drove her younger sister to summer school in the family car for the first time, and for no foreseeable reason under the sun, he was there, ready and eager to talk. And talk they did, for hours and hours about the entirety and nothingness of teenage bliss. More dances followed, though meetups certainly couldn’t be called “dates” since neither had a car. Finally, at one of Woody Windham’s Hopperoonies, they shared their first kiss. To them, it was “The Spark Felt Round the World”.

After that dance, they spoke every day, and when school started, they double dated every weekend with whoever could drive them (still no car!); that is, until Halloween.

Don’t ask about the details, but there were a lot of teenage boys from the neighborhood involved, and LOTS of eggs being splattered everywhere. No car, including her dad’s, was spared. For the first time in their relationship, she had been allowed to drive to his house to visit. He made sure everything was cleaned up, and perhaps that convinced his dad to let him use their family car for going out on dates.

The next five months were a blur of dinners, movies, and platonic romance for both, culminating in a day trip to Myrtle Beach at Easter. For him, it was the perfect day—he had his girl and his freedom, and he loved them both. He decided then and there what he wanted for his future.

When they returned home, he bought her a “promise ring”, which was all he could

afford. Some did not think they should commit themselves at such an early age, but he was determined. In fact, a month later, he bought a proper engagement ring for her and told everyone, “We’re getting married and having ten kids!” Ten children were a news flash to her, but she was willing to try for him.

A month later, just two days after her 18th birthday, they were married at her parents’ house. It was a small, happy, and nerve-wracking affair. He was late due to car trouble and had to hitch a ride from two kind elderly ladies. The electricity failed due to a terrible thunderstorm, and the “best man” was delayed in storm traffic chaos and arrived just after the “I do’s” had been said. Not elegant, perhaps, but very satisfying. They were MARRIED. Come what may, they would face it together.

They began their domestic bliss in a small mobile home in a corner of her grandmother’s property. After a few months and job changes for him, they could drive themselves around town and perform the normal day-to-day functions of a married couple.

Several months later, just before their

first anniversary, their first child came into the world. He was so scared, he wouldn’t hold his son until they were in the safety of their home. She worried continuously that she might hurt her baby with the slightest mistake. Like most new parents, they were extremely nervous and wanted to do everything right. As a husband and father myself, I know firsthand that becoming a parent is a far greater endeavor than becoming a spouse; yet I cannot imagine how thrilling and terrifying it must have been for them to face this challenge at so young an age. That sudden, instant reorientation of your perspective, all of your priorities, hopes, and dreams are unimaginably powerful and complete.

Somehow, they managed. Their love for each other supported and sustained them through those early financial setbacks, mutual career disappointments, and family challenges. They did, however, reduce their target family size to include only five children.

Their next child, a daughter, was born on January 1st, 1974, the first childbirth in the state of South Carolina that year.

Another rush of parental love and protection swelled, no different than the first, except that they were a little more confident this time. Along with the second baby’s growing pains, they recognized that they were running out of space as the family expanded; their living situation needed an upgrade. A bigger house meant more money required, and within three years, she was working full-time again to help support the growing family. He changed careers as well, opting for work that paid more but required extensive travel. A big part of their love expression became bringing home the bacon and holding down the fort. And, they decided, the family was now as large as it needed to be.

This is when many couples’ romances derail and never recover, but theirs was made stronger through their commitment to each other and to their children. They invested their time, energy, and hearts into their family. Teaching their children to read, write, and count, showing them how to throw, catch, and hit a ball, these things were not burdens but blessings.

Family time was (and still is) precious above all else to them. With a heart for adventure, they purchased and renovated a full-sized van to make road trips, state fairs, and family reunions more memorable, and enjoyed countless drive-in movies together. Endless miles and hours spent

transporting the children to ball practice and gymnastics, school plays, and birthday parties were never recognized as accomplishments or achievements—only the achievements of the children mattered.

Witnessing their kids develop into adults and leave home, experiencing heartbreaking health setbacks, enduring financial rollercoasters, and constantly spoiling their grandchildren as often as possible, Bob and Cheryl have been steadfast in the belief that their love for one another has gotten them through it all. Today, when they open their eyes, they thank the Lord for another day with one another and look forward to enjoying future road trips, gatherings, movies, and hopefully great-grandchildren one day, all while still dancing with each other the same as when they first met. I’ve heard the following many times and have learned that some consider it a cliché but take a beat and really feel the words from "Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians: “Love…bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians, 13:7 KJB). If it is really love, it really does. My parents are living proof.

A Dream That Still Guides Us

very January, when our community honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it can seem like he belongs only to the past, as if his work ended long ago. But his dream is still alive in the United States, showing up in our daily choices and the connections we create. King's message was beautifully simple: recognize the inherent dignity in every person and see the shared humanity that connects us all. That vision resonates in our community today, from the diverse congregations at local churches to the partnerships between businesses and nonprofits serving all our neighbors.

Think about the selfless volunteers in the Midlands who give their time to make sure everyone is cared for, or the teachers who believe in every student. These actions show what King meant when he said, "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." He believed service was not about big, public gestures, but about everyday people making a difference through small acts of kindness and fairness.

King once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'" It's a question that challenges us personally. Are we mentoring a young person who needs guidance? Supporting a local family facing hardship? Standing up when we witness unfairness? These aren't abstract ideals; they're practical ways we honor his legacy right here in our own

community. What stands out about King's message is how much he focused on unity instead of division. Today, when it often feels like we are being separated, his call for a beloved community is still important. He dreamed of a society where people are judged by their character, where we celebrate differences, and where justice is strong and steady.

King knew that making change took both time, courage and discipline. He used nonviolent resistance, taught others how to protest peacefully, and always said that only love—not hate, could drive out hate. His way was not passive; it was active and took more strength than violence ever could. Here in our close-knit community of Lexington County, we can live out that vision. When we shop at local businesses, volunteer at food banks, or try to understand someone different from ourselves, we are carrying on the work King began.

His dream was not meant to be admired from afar like something in a museum. It was meant to be lived, worked toward, and shared with future generations. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. this year, we can ask ourselves: What part of the dream is mine to carry? How can I help bring more justice to my own community? In the end, King's greatest legacy is not just what he achieved. It is the invitation he gave us all to keep building a beloved community, one choice, one day, and one neighbor at a time.

Building a Clear Future With Family at the Center

A

bsolute Glass, Inc., a family-owned, Lexington-based glass repair and installation company, is proving that a generation gap can be a very productive part of a growing business. After founding the company more than 20 years ago, owners Mary Anne and Ray Jones are now sharing this homegrown enterprise with their son, Raymond. As a result, operations continue to successfully provide the surrounding communities with personalized, efficient and effective service, which develops a large base of satisfied, returning customers.

When Mary Anne and Ray married in 1998, they were blazing their own unique career paths. While Mary Anne pursued a vocation in victim advocacy, Ray was working for glass repair and installation companies, both local and national. He was continuously faced with the threat of layoffs, inconsistent schedules, or substantially reduced hours. After dealing with so much uncertainty, the two eventually made the bold move to launch their own enterprise: Absolute Glass, Inc. According to Mary Anne, they were both blessed with the fact that Ray “comes from a family of entrepreneurs who have been very fortunate with starting successful companies, so we had

good advice from his parents and from my parents.”

Almost immediately, the venture showed great promise. “Because Ray’s forte was working on high end cars with other companies,” explains Mary Anne, “when we opened, these accounts followed him to use our business.” Life became even busier for the couple as Ray manned the phones and performed installations while Mary Anne processed the billing in the evenings and on the weekends while balancing a full-time job.

Within the first year, the company was able to hire two more staff members; not long after that, their son, Raymond II, was born. The early years became even more challenging due to baby Raymond’s health issues, and Mary Anne was thankful that she had the oppor-

tunity to take him to work with her and attend to his needs personally. Having close family nearby was also a huge bonus; Mary Anne’s parents were available to spend valuable time with their grandchildren as the business continued to expand and evolve.

After about a year and a half, “I ended up resigning from my position and coming to work for the business full-time,” says Mary Anne. Today, she wears many different hats, supervising the office, managing daily operations, administrative tasks, and accounting.

Almost from the beginning, it was not unusual for father and son to perform service calls on weekends or school holidays. Over time, their son Raymond, who was affectionately known as “Little Ray” by clients, became “Big Raymond" as he began to deliver more services and surpassed his father in stature. “Raymond has definitely been a valuable person to have to help us keep up with technology,” she adds, “because the younger generations are all about the new technology.” Their daughter Hannah, who is a freshman at Clemson pursuing an Agricultural Mechanization degree, has occasionally helped answer the phones of the family-friendly business in her teen years.

Mary Anne says they have always encouraged their children to “follow your dreams” and because of the interest Raymond showed in the automotive industry, his role in their company seemed like a natural fit. Young Raymond has challenged his parents on multiple occasions to expand the business by accepting national accounts, and has even tackled his mother’s responsibilities when necessary.

During COVID, the business steadily grew—as a sophomore in high school, Raymond became more available. About that time, a pivotal opportunity within the company was carefully being considered. “This was when windshield recalibrations were introduced to the industry,” recalled Mary Anne. “Ray, Raymond, and I went to one of

our major suppliers and got certified to do recalibrations on cars.” As mandated by insurance companies, “When you replace a windshield or sometimes even other pieces of glass in the car, you have to recalibrate the car, basically resetting it back to factory settings,” explains Mary Anne.

Midlands residents are fortunate—Absolute Glass is one of the few shops that offer free quotes for homes and businesses along with in-house and on-site mobile recalibration services.

“Absolute Glass helped me out in a pinch!” says Blake Allen, a well-satisfied customer. “Unfortunately, I decided to hit a foreign object with my lawnmower in my front yard, and it wasn’t until two days later that I found a piece of this object behind the curtains on my bedroom floor.

I quickly realized I had a problem, so I immediately contacted Mary Anne. Someone was here the next day from her company to get measurements for the glass! Today, the company owns six dispatchable mobile units, and the staff has grown to include 10 members. Within that team, Mary Anne manages the daily tasks of the office and bookkeeping, Ray handles estimations and auto glass installation, while Raymond is the Operations Manager and Lead Auto Glass Technician. “We have always wanted to be our customers’ onestop shop for all their glass needs,” says Mary Anne. “We want them to come back and become repeat customers–whether it’s for their vehicles or for their recreational vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors, or just any glass that they could possibly need.”

Mary Anne and Ray live, work, and play in the Lexington community, ensuring that their customer’s money will be reinvested in Lexington County’s economic health. Some say that a house looks sad or empty when holiday decorations come down, but this is the perfect time to look around your kitchen, family room, garage, or attic with a new set of eyes. Decluttering and organizing your living space will help you create a house you’ll want to come home to.

Adopting an organizational mindset is the first step in creating a living place that brings peace, order, and efficiency. Whether you love a deep clean that immediately results in a new empty space to redecorate or only have the energy to tackle one closet at a time, decluttering and organizing is a process you can do at your own pace and is a lot easier than you might think to get started. It is also a process that can bring value to a home.

Emily Wright of Wright Group Construction suggests considering how a space will be used when clearing and redesigning because, “the money makers in home property values are kitchens and bathrooms, which are also the most critical spaces in your

home to keep up-to-date and clutter free.”

Wright says when organization projects like a closet redesign or built-in cabinetry are completed in preparation to sell a home, the homeowners almost always say they wish they would have done it years before to be able to enjoy the upgrades.

Out With the Old - Decluttering To get started, pretend to be a first-time guest walking through your home. Take note of things you’ve overlooked, like stacks of clutter on the family steps or forgotten mementos pushed into a corner. How different would each room look if trouble spots were tidied or removed all together?

Choose the process before you begin. Identify where you’ll sort things to keep, things to donate, and things for the garbage. Whether you’re clearing a family room, a closet, or kitchen cabinet, be prepared to clean the space once it’s cleared. Have boxes, labels, and markers nearby, and use white trash bags for garbage or recycling and black trash bags for toy donations. It helps if items that your children have outgrown or are no longer using are not visible when you are headed out the front door to a community donation site such as Mission Lexington or Samaritan’s Well.

Be intentional. What space would bring the greatest joy to reclaim? Where does your family spend the most time, or where would they hang out if a space was repurposed? Focus on these areas of your home first and get the entire family involved in the process. Once you have made progress in shared spaces like a den or playroom, your family might find the momentum to tackle other areas around the house.

Be realistic. Not everyone has extended amounts of time or money to completely “gut” a storage or living space, so give yourself permission to start small in order to be successful and stay motivated. Start with a high-impact quick-turnaround project, like clearing kitchen counters, organizing linen closets, or cleaning out under beds or counters. Identify what daily, weekly, and/or monthly decluttering goals you can commit to and then follow through with them. Checking off a “to-do” list can be very satisfying.

In With the New – Getting Organized The key to successful, long-term organization is to discover methods and products that are useful and efficient for you. According to Ryan Allred, with Closets by Design, a cleaned and reclaimed space “needs to serve the purposes you pursued in your decluttering. The things that remain are important to organize.” People seeking home organization solutions are most often looking to maximize or add to existing spaces, but Allred suggests exploring ideas that repurpose spaces in creative ways, such as turning a walk-in closet into a home office or an upscaled vanity and dressing room.

Whether you are organizing attic space or a cabinet in the half bath, take time to think through how to optimize space storage. Wright reminds readers that they can “make

List and label. Don’t overlook this simple yet critical step in organization. Label makers create tidy, easy-to-read reminders that a particular shelf in the linen closet is for pillowcases or detail what’s been stored inside a holiday container. Make index card tags on garage or attic containers waterproof by completely covering them with packing tape. Jot down content lists for storage bins of unique or rarely used products like specialty carpet or leather cleaners. Being able to read what is inside of a sealed box saves time and prevents frustration down the road.

Space savers. Professional organizational services are great, but remember that there are simple, affordable ways to maximize the storage space you already have. Internet searches for space-saving products can meet specific storage needs, such as vacuum-sealed bags for seasonal pillows or winter clothes. Get creative with the highs and lows in your living space, too. Where could you create vertical storage, or how could you best utilize spaces under beds, furniture, or consoles?

In the end, decluttering can be hard if the project feels too overwhelming or emotional; splitting up daunting projects into smaller, bite-size tasks with a long-term goal in mind is critical. Organizing takes time, energy and, sometimes, extra money. However, the joy and peace gained from a clean, organized, and welcoming space is not only worth the effort– it will make your house a place you will always want to come home to.

ever underestimate the power of “Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day,” which is typically observed on the fourth Thursday of April each year. The celebratory theme day was initially created in 1993 to build self-esteem in girls by giving them an opportunity to explore and witness a wide variety of employment positions and role models, especially in fields where females were often underrepresented.

Dr. Jennifer Hartel was inspired to become an ophthalmologist by observing the work of her father, Dr. Walter Hartel, up close and personal as an elementary school student.

She excitedly explained, “I watched my father perform cataract surgery,” and described watching the live surgery via video projection straight from the operating microscope.

The cataract surgery was a “clean surgery, with no blood involved,” says Hartel. Rather than instilling fear in the bright, young girl, the experience sparked a heightened interest in her father’s profession.

It is obvious Hartel was drawn to the field of ophthalmology by more than genetics. She thoroughly understood at a young age that optimum vision significantly improved the quality of life and automatically recognized that this was how she wanted to help people. The road to her professional ambition entailed rigorous academic commitments, diligence, excellence, and perseverance: four years of education at Wake Forest University, four years of medical school at Wake Forest Medical School, one year of internal medicine internship at the University of South Carolina, three years of ophthalmology residency training at the University of South Carolina, and one year of fellowship training in cornea, cataract, and external disease at Ohio State University.

Dr. Hartel and her husband, ophthalmologist Dr. Shawn Iverson, married during her fellowship year, and practice at Palmetto Ophthalmology Associates on Butler Street in Lexington. Prior to joining Palmetto Ophthalmology Associates in 2022, Dr. Hartel

had the pleasure of practicing at Prisma Health/University of South Carolina. She is adored by her patients for her warm bedside manner and admired by her colleagues for her sharp expertise, integrity, experience, and knowledge. This was further solidified by one of her patients, who recently had an in-house laser treatment, “Dr. Hartel and her technicians walked me through the entire procedure in advance so that I would be informed instead of worried or confused,” remarks John. “The treatment was a total success and went exactly as planned; Dr. Hartel’s gentle approach maintained a calm, peaceful atmosphere throughout the entire process.”

When asked about her priorities regarding patient care, Dr. Hartel stressed that the most important part of her job is improving the quality of life for her patients, “In health care in general, you talk to people from all walks of life. You have to be patient and understanding.” The couple enjoys spending quality time with their two beautiful, young daughters, as well as cooking, gardening, and hiking.

ew Year’s Day means collards, black eyed peas, and pork. Over the years I have managed to come up with a pretty good collard recipe (though my wife requests that I cook them outside), and I can stir up some passable black eyed peas. The cut of pork is negotiable. For years, the thing that I missed the most on New Year’s Day was my mama’s cornbread.

As you know, cornbread, like barbeque, coleslaw, turkey dressing, and bread pudding, has many iterations. Sometimes these are regional or ethnic, often they are experiential, and some might even say genetic. While I like most cornbread and can tolerate pretty much any kind, except that which is ruined with too much sugar, my mother’s cornbread fills my stomach and my soul.

Like much of my mother’s cooking, her cornbread is pretty basic; developed over years of practice, it is meant to be tasty and filling. She learned to cook out of necessity after her mother

passed away when she was eleven. Her widowed dad was left to raise the four girls and one son still at home with the help of aunts and friends. Cooking was not a hobby—it was a requirement. After marriage in 1941, and living just outside the town limits of Pelion, cooking continued to be essential. The closest restaurants were a half hour away, and on mill worker and seamstress pay, eating out was an occasional luxury.

Looking back, we were lucky. The big garden out back, and the extended family garden at Grandpa Kyzer’s old home place provided bushels of fresh vegetables in season and a freezer full of meat in the winter. Our normal supper included a meat selection, several vegetables, often rice (because it is a southern staple and also because Dad didn’t care for potatoes after he consumed and peeled so many during WW2), and on occasion, that warm and delicious cornbread. I’m sure at the time I coveted the prepackaged, convenient meals that my friends had, but I realize now that I was fortunate to have our healthy, home cooked fare.

A couple of years back both my sister and I began to experiment, trying to replicate Mama’s cornbread. We each arrived at a recipe that is pretty close to the real deal. I am convinced that mine is more authentic and tastes a tad better. My sister disagrees. Everyone has the right to be wrong. I'm happy to share it with you here. Give it a try. Don’t fret if it cracks or doesn’t flip over exactly right; Mom’s didn’t. Slice it like a pizza and serve it warm, with or without butter is acceptable. I know it won’t warm your heart like it does mine, but perhaps it will inspire you to take the time to cook with your mom or work on recreating a favorite recipe.

A Night to Shine

When Our Community Celebrates Royalty

he room goes quiet as the music begins. One by one, each guest steps forward to receive a crown.

Volunteers and family members rise to their feet, clapping, cheering, some wiping away tears. For three unforgettable hours on a Friday evening in February, there is no question about anyone’s worth. Everyone here is royalty.

What began as a simple idea to celebrate the Tim Tebow Foundation’s fifth anniversary in 2014 has grown into a global movement. Tebow and his team wanted to “radically celebrate overlooked people,” and Night to Shine was born. Today, more than a decade later, 725 churches across all 50 states, and in 56 countries across six continents host Night to Shine simultaneously on the Friday before Valentine’s Day. In Lexington, the event found a home through collaboration. When The Harvest Church first brought Night to Shine to the area and eventually outgrew its space, Mt. Horeb Church stepped in to partner and later began hosting the event. This year marks Mt. Horeb’s ninth year honoring guests ages 14 and up for an evening designed entirely around celebration, dignity, and joy.

For Michelle Hunt, Special Needs Coordinator of Mt. Horeb Church, the event holds a deeply personal meaning.

As the mother of an adult child with autism and a longtime advocate for the special needs community, she has witnessed Night to Shine from every angle—guest, volunteer, and parent.

And every year, she says, the atmosphere is remarkable. “The atmosphere is electric,” Michelle shares. “It is just pure joy at its finest. You can see it on everyone’s faces—from the volunteers to the attendees, to the parents and caregivers walking in. The excitement is contagious. If I had to describe it in two words, it would be pure joy.”

That joy begins the moment guests arrive. A red carpet stretches before them as volunteers line the walkway, cheering and celebrating each guest by name. For many, it’s a thrilling moment—hearing applause, seeing smiling faces, and knowing this night is just for them. At the same time, Mt. Horeb is intentional about meeting every guest where they

are. “Most of our attendees love the red carpet,” Michelle explains. “But we always have someone in place to quiet the crowd if it’s too much for some of our friends. Some just want a quiet stroll down the carpet, and that’s okay too.”

Inside, the celebration continues. Guests can visit hair and makeup stations, have their shoes shined, enjoy karaoke, share a catered dinner with friends, and dance the night away. A sensory room offers a calm space for anyone who needs a break, while a respite room allows parents and caregivers time to relax and connect with one another—something Michelle knows is especially meaningful. “I love hearing back from parents and caregivers,” she says. “So many special needs families don’t attend church because they don’t feel there’s a place for their child. But that’s not the case at Mt. Horeb.” Through Sunday school classes, vacation Bible school, a basketball league, and other programming for individuals of all ages, the church has become a welcoming home for many families—some of whom first connected through Night to Shine. Yet the most powerful moment of the evening comes during the crowning ceremony. Every single guest is honored as king or queen, receiving a crown in front of a cheering crowd. It’s a moment that embodies the heart of Night to Shine—a reminder that every person has immeasurable value and deserves to be celebrated.

For Tim Tebow, Night to Shine represents something deeply meaningful. In reflecting on the event, he shared that some of his greatest joys in life have not come from sports achievements or championships, but from moments like Night to Shine when he feels he’s doing what he is meant to do. The goal, he explains, isn’t just for honored guests to hear they are loved, but to truly experience elegance and recognition; to walk down that red carpet and receive their crown surrounded by people genuinely celebrating them.

The experience extends beyond the guests themselves. One of the most transformative aspects of Night to Shine is what it does for the volunteers. “I think the biggest thing that sticks with me,” Michelle reflects, “is hearing the stories from volunteers and how this event changes the way they view individuals with special needs and their families. Many volunteers are stepping outside their comfort zones for the first time, while others return year after year. I love it when I get a call after Night to Shine and they say they’re hooked—and to sign them up for next year.” For Michelle, those moments are deeply affirming. “As a mom and an advocate for the special needs community, I could not ask for anything more,” she says. Hundreds of volunteers come together to make the night possible, serving as buddies, managing logistics, styling hair, driving limousines, snapping red carpet photos, and spreading joy wherever they’re needed.

What makes Night to Shine so remarkable is that it transforms everyone involved. Guests experience an evening of celebration. Volunteers discover the power of selfless service.

Preconceptions fade. Barriers dissolve. What remains is an authentic human connection and shared joy. Basketball Concrete to Hardwood Courts

I

was recently looking for something in the boxes on the top shelf of our bedroom closet. As usual, I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did find some old sports photos. One of them was from Saturday morning basketball, 1992.

Eleven boys in yellow t-shirts smiling for the camera along with a much younger me. I was coaching, our twin sons were playing, and the league was at the old Northside gym in West Columbia. Boy, it brought back memories. I could almost feel the pebbly grip of the ball, smell the gym socks, and hear the ref ’s whistle and the squeak of shoes on the old hardwood court.

My basketball career was unremarkable as I was never skilled enough to make it past junior varsity, but I always loved the game. I remember regularly playing against my friend Nate in my back yard—and regularly losing to him. (There was a reason we nicknamed him “Frazier” after the Knicks’ great Walt Frazier.) We also had some pretty intense pick-up games on

concrete courts, and there was that unfortunate incident when I was called to the principal’s office on a Monday morning after he caught a crowd of us playing in the school gym on Sunday afternoon. In my defense, it was not our fault that the custodial crew failed to lock up properly. Being good gym rats, we also always made sure the balls were put away, the floor cleaned up, and the doors locked tight.

Despite my lack of talent, I stayed involved with basketball by cheering on and keeping stats for our high school team. I also had the good fortune to coach junior varsity ball for a few years at Pelion High, coach our boys in the recreation league, and help one of our sons coach a grandson in Upward basketball. As a school administrator, I had the opportunity to attend hundreds of games pulling for the Panthers, War Hawks, and Timberwolves. It was a joy, building relationships all along the way.

As I reminisced about my basketball past, I thought about all the great memories being created around our town. Hundreds of girls and boys and young men and women are participating in our high school and middle school teams and in recreation and Upward leagues. All around town players are lacing on their A Ones, Kobe 6s, or the ever-popular Air Jordans. They are working on teamwork, running plays, boxing out, taking it to the rim, and, hopefully, sinking those freebies. Whether they are skilled high school athletes, JV and middle school players honing their skills, or recreation and Upward league players just learning the rules, everyone is hoping to hit the winning shot and dreaming of suiting up in a college or NBA jersey. Alongside them, scores of coaches give their time, knowledge, and talents to provide opportunities and direction; hundreds of parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends are cheering for their team.

So, get into the action. Head out for the Colonial Life Arena, Littlejohn Coliseum, or HRC Arena. Score a ticket and join 18,000 others supporting the three-time national champion Gamecock Women’s team. Stay in Lexington and cheer for the 2024 Wildcat State Champion boys team, or cross the lake and support the 2023 State Champion Yellow Jackets. If you have a child who loves the game, look for an opportunity to get them involved in a league. If you have the time and talent, check on opportunities to give back to the game by coaching. If you attend a game, cheer for your team, give the coach some credit, and bite your tongue when the ref makes a bad call. At the very least, pull your goal back onto the driveway, pump up the round ball, and shoot a few hoops and enjoy the free play!

We hope your heart is full, taste buds are delighted, and your appetite is satiated with the savory dishes from our favorite Jersey-Italian designer, Kristina Parella.

Pesto Pasta

Bright, fresh, and ready in minutes. Serves 4-8

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. pasta of choice 2 c. olive oil 2–3 garlic cloves 1 c. freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano 2 c. fresh basil leaves 1 large handful pistachios (or toasted pine nuts for traditional pesto) Juice of 1/2 lemon Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: To make the pesto, combine the olive oil, garlic, Parmigiano Reggiano, basil, pistachios (or pine nuts), lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain well, then toss immediately with the fresh pesto and serve warm.

Fettuccine Alfredo

Rich, silky, and classic with simple options for chicken or broccoli.

Serves 4-8

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. fettuccine 2 sticks butter 4 egg yolks 1/4 c. freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste Chopped parsley, for garnish

OPTIONAL ADD-INS: 1-2 garlic cloves (grated) 1/4 c. heavy cream, half-and-half, or light cream Grilled or sautéed chicken (seasoned with salt & pepper) Steamed broccoli

INSTRUCTIONS: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the fettuccine according to package directions. While the pasta cooks, mix the egg yolks and Parmigiano Reggiano in a bowl until a thick paste forms, then set it aside. Drain the pasta and toss it with a tablespoon of the butter to prevent sticking.

In the same pot, melt the remaining butter over low heat, adding grated garlic if desired. Remove the pot from the heat, return the pasta, and toss to coat. Stir in the egg-and-cheese mixture until the sauce becomes creamy, seasoning with salt and pepper and add 1/4 cup of cream if you prefer a thinner texture. Fold in grilled or sautéed chicken, broccoli, or both if desired, and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Spaghetti & Meat Sauce Serves 4-8

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. spaghetti 2 lbs. meatloaf mix (beef/pork/veal) or ground beef Olive oil 2 cans San Marzano whole plum tomatoes 2 cans crushed San Marzano tomatoes 6–8 garlic cloves, sliced 1/2 c. chopped fresh basil 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley Kosher salt, to taste Red pepper flakes, to taste Grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS: In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the meat, then remove it, strain off any excess fat, and set it aside. In the same pot, heat enough olive oil to coat the bottom and sauté the garlic and red pepper flakes until the garlic just begins to brown, then stir in the basil and parsley. Reduce the heat and add the crushed tomatoes along with the whole plum tomatoes, breaking the whole tomatoes by hand directly into the pot; season with salt. Bring the sauce to a quick boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for at least an hour, tasting and adjusting the seasoning as needed. Meanwhile, cook the spaghetti in a large pot of salted boiling water according to the package directions, then drain and toss with sauce. Serve with grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano.

INSPIRATION

The Valentine’s Candy

here was a girl in my fourth grade class who I thought was beautiful. In fact, as Valentine’s Day approached that year, I planned to purchase a small, red, heart-shaped box of candy from the Rexall Drug Store and give it to her.

Romance has always been my love language, though my Vicki now says my love language can often be torment for her.

I worked Saturdays on my grandfather’s farm and had saved a few dollars for the box of candy. I had every intention of taking my money to school one day, catching the bus to my mom’s workplace, crossing a downtown street to the Rexall, and purchasing the candy.

But, easier said than done. I spent my money on baseball cards and comic books. I was at my mom’s workplace for several days, but I had forgotten my money on those days. One afternoon I remembered my money, but the Rexall closed for a funeral. I could never get all the pieces in the box to buy this candy. I was so blinded by the task that I wasn’t paying attention to the calendar.

Then came February 13th—the day before Valentine’s Day. When our teacher reminded us of the cupcake party to come the next afternoon, I sat at my wooden desk and panicked. I didn’t have my money, and my dad was getting me from school. I could not take the bus to town.

On days when my dad picked me up from school, it was so late in the afternoon that I was in the school library completing my homework. He worked in residential heating and air, and was extremely tired at the end of his day. He picked me up that afternoon and we rode quietly home, 10 miles on two lane roads. He didn’t even turn on the radio. I still remember riding by the Rexall and staring pitifully at it from the truck window.

When we pulled into our driveway, I couldn’t take it any longer. Between deep breaths and near hysteria, I purged myself of all my frustration over money, timing, Valentine’s candy, the Rexall, and the little girl who was the object of my affections. My poor daddy looked at me like I was having a nervous breakdown.

“Wait right here,” is all he said. He went into the house and came back a few minutes later. He cranked the truck and we started back up the road for a 30-minute round trip to the Rexall. My dad had gone into the house to call the Rexall Drug Store and ensure Dr. Marcinko would wait for us. My mother had given him my money as he came back to the truck.

My dad, who is now in heaven, was never one to say “it’s too much trouble” or “I don’t have time for you.” Regardless of how he felt, he made time for his family.

When we returned home for the second time, my dad turned off the truck and said, “There’s nothing I won’t do for you—nothing I won’t do to help you.” Then, as an afterthought, he said, “Please don’t forget that candy in the morning.”

In his simple sacrifice that day, my dad told me how much he loved me and gave me a true Valentine’s lesson.
