There are great benefits of joining the Iceland Responsible Fisheries programme. It provides access to marketing and promotional material, as well as various types of assistance in promoting Icelandic origin and responsible fisheries. Co-ordinated promotional efforts mean more effective marketing of Icelandic seafood and an improved image internationally. Companies in the value chain of Icelandic seafood can apply for authorisation to use the logo of origin in their marketing efforts, or the certification mark, when they have obtained chain of custody certificate.

THE ICELANDIC APPROACH TO FREEZING SYSTEMS Chiller and freezer systems for processing at both shore and at sea are just what Kælismiðjan Frost excels at. Frost is by far the largest company of its kind in Iceland, with headquarters in Akureyri, in the North of Iceland, and an affiliate in the Reykjavík area, working for clients both in Iceland and abroad. Frost has developed and installed freezer systems for some of the major seafood companies in the North-Atlantic, such as Samherji, HB-Grandi, Ísfélag Vestmannaeyja, Skinney Þinganes, Síldarvinnslan, Vinnslustöðin í Vestmannaeyjum and the Faroese companies Vardin Pelagic and Pelagos. Projects abroad have been a growing part of Frost’s operation with projects in 13 countries in 4 continents last year alone. Cold stores / chiller rooms In recent years, Frost has delivered many cold stores, either built as a standalone project for shipping and transport companies or as a part of pelagic processing plants. The stores are equipped with air drying systems and loading and unloading docks to prevent the accumulation of ice in the stores.
The Icelandic approach Over the last two decades, Kælismiðjan Frost has worked with Skaginn, Rafeyri, and other specialist companies in the seafood service sector, to establish an “Icelandic approach” to pelagic processing: A processing plant where fish is automatically graded, packed, frozen and palletized, greatly reducing the cost of labour, energy and packing materials. This is the approach that the Faroese companies Vardin Pelagic and Pelagos chose when they contracted Frost, Rafeyri and Skaginn for their factories in Suduroy in 2012 and Fuglafjordur in 2014. The fully automated plants produce between 600 and 1.500 tonnes in 24 hours. Since then the collaborating companies have delivered a new 850 ton factory to Eskja in NE Iceland as well as upgrading other plants in Iceland to increase capacity. Currently the companies are rebuilding the Vardin Pelagic plant in Suduroy after the plant built in 2012 was destroyed in fire last summer. The new plant will have a maximum capacity of 1.500 tons in 24 hours.
On board refrigeration Frost is also deeply involved in the seagoing side of the business, with both refits and new installations for chiller and freezer systems for fishing vessels.
At the same time, work is starting on a new fish processing plant for the Russian company Gidrostroy. The Gidrostroy plant will have a capacity of 800 tons in 24 hours and will be commissioned in September this year.
Last year Frost delivered a new prawn trawler to Canada as well as two new filleting trawlers to DFFU in Germany, and in the first half of this year two sister vessels to the DFFU vessels will be delivered, one to the UK and one to France. All these vessels are built in Norway.
RSW systems As part of the seafood industry’s quest for better raw material handling and better consumer products, Kælismiðjan Frost´s routinely installs new or upgrades existing RSW systems on board pelagic vessels.
Later this year Frost will deliver the equipment and start installation for HB Grandi´s new filleting trawler that will be built in Spain.

FUEL SAVINGS
EFFICIENCY
Fuel is black gold these days of volatile fuel prices and burning fuel without needing to hurts. Marport gear sensors are designed to play a role as a contributing factor in maximising efficiency, targeting fishing at the most productive spots and keeping fishing time to the minimum needed to fill the fishroom while keeping your fuel bills down
Time is money, and cutting down on lost time and wasted effort is the key to streamlining any fishing operation. The better the sensors on the gear and the more detailed the information reaching the skipper, the shorter the time the fishing gear has to be in the water. Our aim is to provide the essential information to keep fishing time strictly to the time needed, without wasting time or effort.
CATCH QUALIT Y
COMPATABILIT Y
Short tows are the thing. Getting the fish from the water to the fishroom as fast and as fresh as possible it what keeps quality high and prices strong. Marport’s codend sensors aim to tell you when there’s just enough fish in the gear for a prime quality haul, without needing to tow that extra halfhour to be sure.
Marport’s sensors have been designed from the outset to work seamlessly with other systems. We don’t see why you should have to fit an entire system when a single component needs replacing, so our sensors dovetail with other manufacturers’ sensor arrays and wheelhouse displays.
SUSTAINABILIT Y In today’s world sustainability has become more than simply a buzzword; it’s an essential aspect of modern fisheries. Today’s approach is to take what you need and leave the rest. Nobody wants to slaughter any golden geese and we aim to provide skippers with the gear they need to align their catches to the needs of the market.

Samskip in a nutshell Samskip is a global logistics company offering transport and related services by land, sea, rail, road and barge with a particular focus on cost efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly transport. Samskip transports more than 800,000 TEUs every year and over 1 million tonnes of refrigerated and frozen products, making the company a major operator in the field of temperature controlled logistics. And with an annual turnover of over EUR 700 million, Samskip is now one of the larger European transport companies, with offices in 26 countries throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia, employing approximately 1,500 people.

The shipper’s flexibility, contacts and rapid response is paramount to success. He says an example of things going well is how the Icelandic fisheries companies and Samskip worked together when the Russian market closed to Iceland in the summer of 2015, a belated result of the situation in Ukraine.

On average 650 to 700 thousand tonnes are exported from Iceland each year. „Groundfish catch is relatively stable between years, even though catch in specific species can vary a bit.” Major changes that have been seen in recent year Kvaran says have been related to pelagic fishing. “We have seen especially strong capelin seasons, in particular between 2002 and 2005. ÞORLÁKSHÖFN - the future location for your company? The cargo ship Mykines which is owned by Smyril Line Cargo, sails between Þórlákshöfn and Rotterdam on a weekly basis, all year around. The sea transit time is the shortest on offer in the southwest corner of Iceland. Þorlákshöfn is located on the southwest coast of Iceland and the town has the only cargo and fishing vessel harbour on the south coast, until you reach Hornafjörður. Transportation from Þorlákshöfn is easy as the town is well connected to all areas of Iceland and is located only 40 km from Reykjavík and 85km from Keflavík Airport. There is a wide range of land available in Þórlákshöfn for companies of various sizes and types. A major industrial and service area has been planned and will be located in the harbour area and inland of the harbor area. The land area is vast and the conditions are suitable for development. The location is also advantageous with regard to the requirements generally set out by investors e.g. with regard to the location of industrial sites and manufacturing but is also ideal for other operations.
