The Gestational Surrogacy Process: What You Need To Know?

Most people equate the gestational surrogacy process with pregnancy.

While this may be true in some sense, an entirely different process is involved leading up to the surrogate’s pregnancy, often lending many questions.

Here are a few pointers every potential surrogate needs to know about the gestational surrogacy process: Genetic Link Every potential surrogate must understand that they will not be related to the baby that will be growing in their womb. Here at Rite Options, we facilitate intended parents and surrogates with gestational surrogacy. In this method, the surrogate’s body facilitates the growth of the embryo into a fully developed baby. The embryos are created using the egg/sperm of the intended parents or with donor material. The surrogate will NOT share a genetic link with the baby.

Pre-Surrogacy Routine Preparing for surrogacy requires a series of medical procedures which the surrogate must undergo. This involves a fair amount of medical examination, needles and investigations. For example, the surrogate and her spouse/partner are both required to participate in medical tests for infectious disease prior to embryo transfer. She will also undergo a series of blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure her body is fit for carrying and safely delivering a baby.

Preparation for Embryo Transfer In order to prepare her body for the embryo transfer, the surrogate will have to self-administer regular injections of a series of hormones, over the period of 4 weeks. In order to ensure the hormones are being absorbed by the body, the physician will conduct a few blood tests and ultrasounds prior to the embryo transfer.

The Embryo Transfer Process When the surrogate is ready for embryo implantation, a catheter is inserted into her womb via the cervix, with the aid of an ultrasound guide. The embryo is transferred into the surrogate’s womb. After the transfer process, she will be requested to rest for another hour before going home and to continue resting for the next few days. Approximately ten days after this process, the surrogate will receive another blood to check for levels of pregnancy hormone HCG. A repeat blood will occur two days after the first one.

If the embryo transfer does not lead to a pregnancy, the medications are arrested. A menstrual cycle will occur shortly thereafter. In case additional embryos are there and all parties approve to move forward, the process will be repeated starting with the medications.

Points to Note An embryo transfer is not the end of injections. These will continue for another two weeks after the transfer occurs and longer if the procedure results in a positive pregnancy.
