Meet the Editors...

Hey there!

I’m Sarah, and I reside in Jonesborough,

Tennessee. Like most little girls, I have been in love with all things equines since I was 6 years old. From pretending I was a horse myself, to starting my own colts, loving on mustangs, to jumping in the show ring, I have never been able to get enough of God’s most gorgeous creation, the horse.

Now, twenty years later, I have started my own natural horsemanship mentoring business and am elated at the opportunity to be a collaborator and editor of this magazine!

Hey guys, I’m Sam, a 22-year-old trainer

whose passion is gentling, training, and rehoming mustangs to get them out of holding. My other passion is helping other horse owners communicate with their horses better. Over the past few years I've developed my business through YouTube, clinics, training, taking and teaching lessons, learning through internships, social media, etc. My goal is to help other young trainers grow their businesses as well and connect the equine community… which is why I began this magazine.

Sarah and I are so excited to bring you this magazine full of content.

I’m Grace Thompson, of GET Horsemanship. I am a 20 year old colt starter and mustang gentler from East Tennessee. I grew up on my family’s farm, helping care for a wide variety of animals, including horses. At 14, I met my first wild mustangs. A trainer I knew had mustangs in training for the Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover. I had never heard of this competition-100 days from Wild to Mild. I watched this man gentle a mustang mare, and take her on to compete in the Extreme Mustang Makeover and was completely mesmerized! I knew then I had to do this. In 2018, after years of praying for this opportunity, I did my first Youth EMM. I placed 3rd and I was hooked. In 2019/2020, I went to intern with Sid and Jacqueline Zacharias and competed in my first adult makeover. At the end of 100 days, I found myself in Fort Worth Texas, alongside some of the biggest names in the business, making top 10 and placing 7th in finals-walking away the 2020 Young Gun Champion of Fort Worth Players Choice EMM. A dream come true for sure. Since then, I have worked with other trainers including Luke Gingerich and Hannah Catalino, and I have become a TIP Trainer and have competed in several TIP Challenges and the Oklahoma EMM.

DON’T QUIT I have been gentling and training wild mustangs since 2018, but I’d like to share one particular journey with you, about a horse named Froya. Frøya was a wild, 12-year-old mustang, mare from Warm Springs, Oregon. At pickup, I watched as they ran her up into the chutes. As I videoed her, I was shaking on the inside, knowing that I was taking on something huge, something that maybe I wasn’t quite ready for. She was massive, and stoic and definitely had a presence more wild than any other mustang I’d encountered. I was excited and a little scared. They would not halter her in the chute, so that left me with a Liberty start and I knew I had my work cut out for me.Those first three months were spent trying to develop a language we both could understand.

Whenever I asked her to face up, she would trot up off the fence towards me with her head high, neck arched, ears sharp and alert, looking at me as if to say, “I dislike your very existence, and will dispose of you if you threaten me.” Needless to say, she demanded respect.

At first, I was enthusiastic about the challenge she presented. Any little sign of acceptance was encouraging and felt like a success. Everyday I would go out to her, and try to work with her, but most days she would turn off her emotions and be hard and unreachable. I started to get discouraged and I began to question if I would ever really break through to her. Seven months into Froya, I was seriously doubting myself. I started to genuinely struggle. Going out to work with her became very difficult for me and I began to question why? Why me? And why this horse? As I . pondered the question why, I began to realize my struggle wasn’t necessarily with her. Every morning I woke up, knowing I had to go face that horse and look into the mirror that she held up to my face. I had to stare at my lack of patience, my lack of feel and timing, and my inability to communicate properly with her. Everyday, I had to go out and face that big, gray, still mostly wild, mare that didn’t want my love, didn’t want to trust, didn’t want human interaction, and definitely didn’t want me.

No matter how I tried… be it slow and steady, working at Liberty, or being more forward and confident in my approach… nothing clicked, and nothing really progressed. I reached out to many trainers, but no one could physically help me. I was discouraged and many days I just wanted to quit. Then one day, it became obvious to me that this was about me. This was about me needing to dig deeper, work harder and figure this horse out. So that’s what I started to do. We made it through the winter with achievements of small things like basic desensitizing, lunging over ground poles, tarps, garbage bags, pool noodles, etc. I could throw anything at, over or under her. My confidence was increasing and I got the saddle on, and then taught her to ground drive. The only thing left for me to do was to ride her, but the thought of that still really scared me.

Froya was still somewhat untrusting and cautious. She still preferred to be alone and I was hesitant to just get on her and go, like I normally would do with a horse at this point. My doubts, and maybe some common sense, told me I definitely couldn’t ride her without some help. My farrier, who is an absolutely amazing horseman, taught me a different approach for the first ride, using a second person. He lunged her, while I rode her. She was very nervous of a new person handling her, and it was a little intense. Not gonna lie, I’ve never been so scared in my life, but we got it done. We didn’t ride again, until I had the help of a second person.

Don’t Quit Continued...

I finally found someone brave enough to ride this mustang while I handled her from the ground. Me on the ground seemed to work better because she knew me and now seemed to be putting more trust in me, and we got a second ride on Froya. I decided that the 3rd ride was going to be in the mountains. We took her to rugged mountain trails, where we put the next four rides on her going straight up the mountain side, so all she had to think about was putting one foot in front of the other. This was a good decision for her. She was incredible, like she’d been trail rode her whole life.

After that, I started riding her regularly on other trails and in the arena. But it never got easy and I still have her in training. To this day, she is still a little intimidating and she still holds that mirror up to my face, but she tries her heart out, and I am very proud of her. I am proud of the work we have done, and I am proud of where we are. We have come so far. I tell you her story, not to share my success, or her success, but to encourage you to dig deep, try new things and never give up. So many days, I dreaded seeing Frøya, knowing that I had to ride her. I had to go out there and face my fears and myself and get that first ride done. Froya is still the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life because every time I see her, I see me. She shows me the things about myself that I don’t like. My lack of patience, my lack of a courage, my lack of trust, my fear of getting hurt, and my fear of failure. She forces me to look at myself and see what I need to change about myself. I am not suggesting that Froya and I are perfect, nowhere near, but I definitely have to say we are better. I am better. The way I see horses, my language with them, is so different now. Frøya has taught me to be softer, to be more patient, to listen longer, to ask differently, to be willing to trust, to lay aside fear and to saddle up anyway. To give every horse a chance… a fair chance.

But mostly, to never be afraid to fail. No one has ever achieved anything great, because they were afraid to fail. We really don’t learn much from our successes, it’s those failures and mistakes that teach us about life and living (and horses.) We are reaching the end of our journey together. Frøya will soon go home. She is still a little anxious and introverted. But here at the end, she has finally found the freedom to express herself.

Instead of holding onto her emotions, fears, and doubts she is confident that I understand her and respect her and that she can trust me. I am so grateful for this journey with Froya and the growth that happened because I didn’t quit. Maybe you can relate? Don’t give up-don’t you stop.

Dig deep, and DON’T YOU QUIT!

Currently, I am colt starting full time and gentling mustangs for the public at my home facility. I ride and train reenacting cavalry horses and work my personal horses at Liberty. I love my work, and the many wonderful opportunities the mustangs present me. So hopeful to see what God has in store for my future.

CW Horsemanship focuses on natural horsemanship, an open gentle source of communication in the partnership between horse and handler. A favorite around the barn is trick training and Liberty work.

Carley owns six personal horses, five of which are BLM Mustangs and the other is a welsh cross. With her personal horses, she enjoys fox hunting, showmanship, ranch riding, hunter/jumpers, and performing.

Carley has participated in nine different mustang competitions since 2017. Along with competing in the 2021 All Womens Colt Starting competition, bringing home reserve champion out of some extremely talented trainers.

Always Keep the Hope!

It’s not secret that I love horses, and even more I love being able to share my love of horses with kids.

Which is why I started a 501(c)3 non profit that works with underprivileged children in giving them a safe place to go after school and have the ability to learn life skills at no cost. When starting my non profit I’ll admit I was nervous and never thought it would grow into what it has today, so let me taking you to the beginning.

It all started in 2015 when I met a family staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill.

Immediately after hearing their story of how their daughter, Clara Bell, was in the hospital at UNC I knew I wanted to be able to help. Not only help them, but have the opportunity to help all the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. So it began, I started handing out gas gift card twice a year to the families residing at the Ronald McDonald House.

Soon after doing this I knew I wanted to incorporate horses into my 501(c) and that’s where my aspirations for creating a program designed to help at risk youth began. As I have grown my non profit and been able to take kids in I’ve personally seen significant growth within them. Some of them start off shy, introverted kids that quickly become the ones known for their jokes and smiles around the barn.

Giving these kids a safe space and place where they can experience normalcy and consistency is beyond important. Especially, while they are figuring out who they are in this world. Horses help these kids gain confidence, acquire problem solving skills, as well as grow in patience, and personal responsibility.

They have the opportunity to ride and show at no cost. I’ve been so blessed with donations of showing and riding clothes throughout the years, which also ensures these kids have the proper attire and equipment to learn and grow in the equine world.

Each of these kids will forever have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to see them conquer life!

Hello! My name is Sarah Hableib, I am 19 years old and I am from Holton Kansas. I am working on expanding my own horse training business, Sarah’s Mustangs & Horsemanship.

When I was young, I did not grow up being around horses. I was 10 when I finally owned my first horse. From there on I fell in love with riding, taking care of horses and training. I took lessons for several years when I learned the basic riding skills and how to start training horses.

In 2017 I adopted my first mustang. He was my very first project horse, and I learned by trial and error how to start and finish a horse all on my own. I also received help from several trainers I looked up to. After a couple years of working with my own horses, I decided to take on a couple client horses. I started several horses under saddle, which I began to enjoy more and more!

After training for a few clients, I knew I wanted to pursue horse training as my career.

After adopting my first mustang, I knew that was a breed I wanted to continue working with. So I applied and competed in two Wild Horse Youth Challenges, where I was awarded overall Grand Champion both times with my yearlings! Then, in 2020, I competed in the Kentucky Extreme Mustang Makeover. And again, in 2021 in the Oklahoma Extreme Mustang Makeover, where my horse, Dunkin, and I received Reserve Champion and fan favorite.

This was a huge accomplishment and goal of mine!

How it Started…

Several years ago, I watched a film called Wild Horse, Wild Ride. This was the first time ever heard of the Extreme Mustang Makeover. I found the whole idea of taking a wild mustang, gentling it, and starting it under saddle along with 100 other competitors very exciting and amazing. After reading and learning more about this program it became one of my dreams! It was almost too impossible to think I would ever be able to compete in it. However, my dream came true in 2020 when I applied and was accepted for the 2020 Kentucky Extreme Mustang Makeover. I picked up a completely wild and spirited mare that I named, Janelle. She was extremely tough, taking all of my training skills to the test. At one point I wanted to give up, but I reached out to several trainers and continued working with her.

By the end of our 3 months I was able to ride her and compete in all the classes for the makeover. We did not place in the top 10 but I was still amazed that I was able to compete in it at all! Even though my first experience in the mustang makeover was extremely tough and challenging I still enjoyed it! So, this year, April 2021 I picked up my second Extreme Mustang Makeover horse, Dunkin. I knew I wanted to get help with this one, so I packed up and headed to Texas for four weeks to intern with two amazing trainers, Craig and Katie Moore. I was able to make huge progress with Dunkin and learned so much while I was there.

The internship gave us a great start to our journey together. The four months went by quickly, and soon the competition was right around the corner. We were prepared as much as we possibly could be. It was a long and stressful couple of days as we drove to Oklahoma where the competition was held and competed, but it was completely worth it!

By the end of the competition, my mind was blown! Dunkin performed to the best of his ability, we placed well in all of our classes and were awarded with the overall Reserve Champion and fan favorite freestyle!

This was a dream come true, which I worked so hard for.

There are nearly 50,000 wild horses and burros that have been removed from public lands and are currently in holding pastures and corrals managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The mustang makeover events give the mustangs a better chance of being adopted, and this is the reason why I wanted to start competing. Mustangs are an amazing breed with a huge variety of color, sizes, conformation, personality, and temperament. They can be trained for all disciplines whether it's reining, hunter jumping, cutting, mounted shooting, trail riding, and so much more! If anyone were to ask me if they should adopt a mustang my answer would be yes! Mustangs will teach you more than you think you could ever learn. The mustang makeovers have shown me that if you work hard for what you want, you can reach that goal, no matter what!

How to Gain and Keep Clientele

Hello, I’m Erika and I live and train in San Diego County, CA! I grew up near Seattle Washington riding in 4-H with my two quarter horses. By college age, I was showing paints and western performance horses. I didn’t start training professionally until I moved to California with my husband, Shane, in 2010. From there I started training full time and found my passion for a different type of horsemanship after being inspired by Stacy Westfall and Elisa Wallace and their incredibly moving liberty performances on YouTube videos. In 2013 I fell into the world of the Extreme Mustang Makeovers, and I’ve become extremely passionate about helping people be successful and safe with their horses, in and out of the saddle.

I now teach horsemanship clinics at my ranch and around the country, I start horses for clients and I TIP train burros, because I adore the long ears! I have competed in several different Mustang Competitions, earning top ten finishes in: Arizona EMM (2016), Texas Magic (2017), Washington EMM (2018) and California AMTC invitational (2019).

The Importance of Great Clients You’ve got the skill, you’ve got the passion, you’re ready to start training full time… Where do you start??

With finding great (the best, actually) clients of course!

It’s an exciting and challenging part of becoming a professional horse trainer. Establishing fantastic client relationships from the get go will set you on a long term path for success, while holding on to bad clients can easily put you in a tail spin and wash your dreams down the drain. Allow me to help you with some tips on getting (and retaining) incredible long term clients and help you to distinguish when and how to fire a client who’s causing you grief.

First of all, let’s establish a few things that make YOU trustworthy and desirable as their ideal trainer. They are entrusting you with their special horse, their baby, and giving you their hard earned money.

“The Importance of Great Clients” continued...

Make sure you always do these 5 things: 1.

Be fantastic at communicating. From the very start, be totally clear about what you can accomplish with the horse, give clear and accurate updates and video updates, charge accurate fees, be punctual and organized for lessons or clinics. Make billing simple and easy. Your client should never have a chance to wonder how the horse is doing or feel ghosted by you. Over communicating is always better than silence.

2.

Set Expectations and deliver results. Can you start the horse in 30 days? (Really?) Can you get the horse to never spook again? (Really?) Put in writing, before you take the horse, exactly what the goals are for the horse, and be very clear on what you KNOW you CAN achieve. Then if you can achieve more, even better! They will be pleased with completing the tasks, but they will be blown away when you over deliver.

3.

Embrace Your Role as the Expert. If they are sending the horse to YOU, you are the expert. For new trainers this can be hard to not second guess yourself. Especially when something in training isn’t going as planned. Stick with step one: communicating, and tell the client any issues.

Then step two: stay with your plan & trust yourself to get the desired results. You can do it!

Own Your Mistakes (and present solutions immediately). If you mess up- don’t hide it, own it! Tell your client what’s going on and how you plan to course correct.

Ask for feedback from clients. At the end of every clinic I send out a survey where people can rate how I did in different areas, including if we covered what was expected, was the price to low/high/just right, if they had fun, and what they took away. This helps me plan clinic costs, what I teach and how to market future clinics. The same will work for horse training when you’re getting established.

Next... let’s go over what makes a great client, and what makes a BAD client.

Great clients pay on time, communicate clearly, make you happy to work with them, put a smile on your face when you see them, uplift you/your brand/your barn. They will also support you, trust your judgement, and sometimes bring you home baked goodies! Great clients are more likely to stay with you longer, provide you with great references and promote your business. You want your client roster and wait list to be packed with great clients!

Bad clients make excuses, don’t value your time/knowledge, they don’t value your boundaries (maybe asking way to much of you, well beyond the terms of your agreement), they’ll waste your time, they may accuse you of doing it “wrong,” bad mouth or gossip and just give you that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach.

Tough News… How to fire a bad client.

First, maybe they aren’t a bad client, maybe something just wasn’t communicated correctly. Make sure you have a clear and honest conversation with them to clear up any questions/miscommunication first.

One honest and forthright conversation can often turn a bad client into a great one!

Next, put something in writing. Let’s say they never pay on time… Clients that don't pay on time are more than just annoying; they interfere with your business's cash flow. You simply can't afford them!

It’s not personal, it’s business. Write a new contract that says something like “We agreed that your bill is due on the 5th, you have been consistently paying on the 11th. From now on there will be a late fee of $___if paid after the 5th, and after the 10th our contract will be terminated” After it’s in writing, if they violate again, don’t be scared to say “Bye Felicia!” Give a written record of the reason for termination and/or a refund if fitting. “I don’t seem to be able to accomplish the goals you have for this horse and we need to part ways. As of this day you need to move your horse.”

If the horse is dangerous, don’t be a hero and get yourself hurt by trying to work miracles. I have a clause in my contract that say I can send the horse back at any time, for any reason. Just issue a refund and be done with the problem person or problem horse if you feel like the situation is off AT ALL.

For every bad client out there, you will find 10 great clients that want a spot in your barn, so make your job easy and fun by finding people and horses that make you love being a horse trainer!

Whenever someone new contacts me, I ask how they heard of me/who referred them, and if they have worked with other trainers before. If they have worked with 5 other trainers and always felt “cheated”, this is a huge red flag to me. If they worked with one trainer, but it just wasn’t the right fit, that’s totally okay with me, everyone has a different style and maybe mine will match what they want. I also never get mad or offended if someone seeks help or advice from other horse professionals, you want your clients to get as much knowledge as they can, so they can have a more successful relationship with their horse!

Hey! I’m Jessica and I live in DeLand, FL I have been riding since before I could walk, but only started taking lessons and riding with trainers when I turned 18. I grew up riding problem horses and wanted to learn how to fine-tune and make them fancy. Now I ride and train reining horses and barrel horses daily, as well as dabble in cow work whenever I get the chance. But I never left the problem horses behind, and even branched out into wild mustangs. I always strive for a soft, responsive, and willing horse, who can go any direction and do anything asked of it. I offer training to any and all horses, from performance horses and prospects to horses that have been labeled as "untrainable" by others. I train the horse I have that day, and am always willing to change my approach as the horses need me to, I don't stick to just one method of training.

Just Ask...

A tip for anyone wanting to get into horse training, or even anyone who wants to just become a more serious rider - learn to ask for help, ride with anyone and everyone you can! Also, ride as many horses as you can too. No one person knows everything about horses and training, and no one person ever will. However, everyone knows something! The more little bits you learn, the more you will be able to do and the more you will grow. I am constantly texting or calling other trainers for tips or advice, even when I'm not struggling with a specific problem. Sometimes, I just want to brainstorm ideas or bounce theories around. On average, I am hauling out at least once or twice a week to ride with different trainers, because nothing beats in-person help. Even as a barrel racer and reiner, I ride with cutters, dressage riders, and jumpers, not just people who do the same stuff as me. It is an invaluable thing, learning from other equine disciplines. There are so many different approaches to training, there is no need to limit yourself to only one or two. All horses are different, and something that has worked every time on one specific problem may not work with the next horse you encounter with that issue. Someone who has different experiences than you do may have the answer. Don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone a little bit, it turns out I love cutting more than I do reining or barrel racing and I never would have known if I hadn't driven 2 hours one day to ride with a guy I had only spoken to a few times. I have learned so much more in the past 5 years riding with other trainers. Don’t limit yourself, just ask!
