Meet the Editors...

Hey there!

I’m Sarah, and I reside in Jonesborough,

Tennessee. Like most little girls, I have been in love with all things equines since I was 6 years old. From pretending I was a horse myself, to starting my own colts, loving on mustangs, to jumping in the show ring, I have never been able to get enough of God’s most gorgeous creation, the horse.

Now, twenty years later, I have started my own natural horsemanship mentoring business and am elated at the opportunity to be a collaborator and editor of this magazine!

Hey guys, I’m Sam, a 22-year-old trainer

whose passion is gentling, training, and rehoming mustangs to get them out of holding. My other passion is helping other horse owners communicate with their horses better. Over the past few years I've developed my business through YouTube, clinics, training, taking and teaching lessons, learning through internships, social media, etc. My goal is to help other young trainers grow their businesses as well and connect the equine community… which is why I began this magazine.

Sarah and I are so excited to bring you this magazine full of content.

Many people start out riding horses out of desire. It’s a typical childhood dream to ride, and own horses, but it wasn’t mine. We have had horses since I was in kindergarten. My mom rode a lot, and was set on making me her riding buddy, however I did not take an interest.

I started out taking English lessons at a local barn but couldn’t find my spark. Then, my parents got me a pony, which was another failed attempt. Finally, the last attempt to get me to take an interest was signing me up for the 2020 Texas Extreme Mustang Makeover. I didn’t want to disappoint my parents, so I reluctantly agreed. On September 14th, 2019, I picked up my first mustang and officially found my spark!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (the two-year old sorrel filly I was assigned) and I went through many highs and lows. I was out there every day, rain, or shine, working with her.

It’s like we were meant to meet each other. Since Reese, (who now is started and competing under saddle) I have trained several other mustangs, and other young horses.

Reese was the first mustang to meet me, and certainly won’t be the last.

Making a Successful Horse Many trainers want to train a successful horse. They want their horse to win shows, classes, or qualify for some big event. Many people view a successful horse with these standards in mind.

However, I view a successful horse a little differently. A successful horse is a horse who understands what they are being asked to do and can properly execute it. This is more dependent on the handler than the horse. You may have heard the phrase, “set your horse up for success,” which is what this concept revolves around. Your horse can only be successful if you give them the opportunity to be. How exactly might we do this though?

Providing an Opportunity First, to give your horse the opportunity to be successful you must know what you want them to do. Let’s say you want to teach the lay down through the bow method (teaching your horse to bow by picking up its hooves and applying backwards pressure to the rope and building until they lay down). You cannot expect your horse to bow or lay down in the first session because those are (usually) unrealistic expectations that lead to frustration, confusion, and overall failure. To set your horse up for success in the first session you would make sure they understand the basics first. In this case that would be being able to pick up their hooves, and softly back up.

Moreover, you need to have obtainable expectations. In this example it might be you pick up their hooves, put pressure on the rope and they shift their weight back. This mindset and prep work would set your horse up to be a successful horse in the process of teaching the lay down.

An additional point is handler anxiety. When people are nervous about showing they will decide to change things last minute or do something in a different way that their horse doesn’t understand. You might think it looks better to do something a different way than the way you practiced, but it usually ends up looking sloppy and unprepared. This sets our horses up for failure in the ring, because they don’t know what we are asking. Instead of doing this, we should in doubt do what you practiced. It will almost always look better and sets your horse up for a successful showing experience.

Therefore, a successful horse completely lies in the hands of the handler. You can decide to do the prep work, have realistic expectations, and do as you practiced, or set your horse up to be unsuccessful. I challenge you better yourself for the success of your equine partner.

Garrett Shanks Trainer at Garrett’s Equine Path

Garrett Shanks is an 18 y/o young man with a strong passion and dedication to the equine industry. Garrett has competed in three Youth Extreme Mustang Makeovers, one Youth TIP Challenge, and is working on his first Adult TIP Challenge. Aside from all of the Wild Mustang Training events, Garrett Shows in Open Shows, Mustang Only Shows, and performs demos with his personal horse Sheza Dancing Dream, a 4 y/o Mustang Mare. The team has many accomplishments including the title of 2020 Mustang Heritage Foundation Youth Ambassador, 2021 Oklahoma Open Show Grand Champion, and Operation Wild Horse Open Show Reserve High Point Champion.

Garrett offers beginner horsemanship/riding lessons, TIP Trained Mustangs, and horses for sale all while he moves around the country, living and learning with different people and experiencing different opportunities. Garrett dreams of becoming an owner and operator of an equine based facility with growth opportunities for all people in their horsemanship journey, farm life skills, and Christian values.

Overcoming NO!

As a young person, many times we get words of discouragement from people older than us... “No you can't do this or you can't do that because you're still a kid.” or “No, kids don't get those kinds of opportunities.” Well, with a little courage and faith all things are possible. I know personally the first time I told someone I wanted to compete in a Youth Extreme Mustang Makeover, I was pulled out of work, sat down in the office with 3 adults, and received an hour long rant about how I was not ready to train a horse, nor was I ready to own a horse, nor would I be able to find anyone to help me learn enough to be able to do the competition.

Heartbroken yet determined, I returned with “BET!?” I walked out of that office more excited and confident then I had ever been. From that point on I knew I had to do everything in my power to prove those people wrong!

That opportunity didn't come fast or easily, but it sure did come.

For the next eight months I dedicated all of my time to researching information on training mustangs, working with a trainer, and building a support team to cheer me on in the event.

When I was finally able to pick up my first wild mustang for the 2018 Youth Extreme Mustang Makeover, I drew a yearling filly. I named her Sheza Dancing Dream, because after all, she was a dream come true.

The Journey...

Sheza and I spent 4 months working and prepping for the EMM. Everyday presented its own challenges with training and with people making daily comments such as “You will never make it as a horse trainer.” and “It’s sad that you have younger people doing better than you.” Hopeful that the competition would bring better luck and more confidence, I pushed through with high hopes! To my surprise the show brought me some grief and heartache as I had people make fun of me for showing my filly in all pink show shirts. However, by the end of the event everyone's negative comments didn't mean anything to me; because, I had proved them all wrong. We placed 14th out of 40 and had a great partnership between a young wild horse and myself, which no one believed I could accomplished. Most of the people who discouraged me have since turned into my biggest supporters and friends. The biggest take away from this experience was not the boldness of telling an adult no or proving them wrong, but the humbling that came from it. It was extremely important not to be disrespectful or rude to anyone. I had to respect what they had to say and learn from their negative comments, as many of the comments were true... I really didn't have the knowledge to work a wild horse and I didn’t have the mindset to become a trainer. BUT I did have the grit, willingness, and determination to understand and learn from them.

This experience still humbles me today as I figure out the proportions of knowing where I stand in the horse industry. Many times young people take an experience like this and start to think they “have arrived” as a trainer.

My goal is to never oversell myself, but to continue to better my skills and show people that anything is possible with courage and faith.

My name is Emily Ogan and I run Two Bears Mustangs a TIP and mustang gentling facility located in Central Oregon. I started my riding career at 5yrs old and began competing in the Pony of the Americas club by eight years old where I showed and trained horses as an all around rider for 12 years, bringing home many regional and club titles before eventually making it to the national level for the breed. However, about 6 years ago I was bit by the “mustang bug” and completely shifted my focus. I started gentling mustangs for people in my community before competing in my first mustang gentling competition in 2018, where I showed in the “Teen Riding Division” at which point I was really hooked. I continued to compete in mustang gentling challenges before officially becoming a TIP trainer in 2019. I have since worked hard to pull mustangs out of holding facilities and place them into loving homes where they can succeed as valued equine partners while simultaneously spreading awareness for the adoption program and versatility of the mustangs.

The TIP Business: What Works for Me and Why My Program Stands Out:

My program is primarily centered around the TIP training portion, while I offer other services, TIP is definitely the most popular part of Two Bears Mustangs, I mean who doesn’t love the ability to adopt a started mustang for $125? However, there are lots of amazing and talented TIP trainers out there, especially in my state! Because of this, I needed to find a way to make my program stand out, this is why I work hard to make the adoption and TIP process through my facility very adopter friendly. The way I run my program, adopters get to be involved in every step. I feel this helps ensure my gentled mustangs end up in homes where they will likely live out their entire lives. I look for and get to know my adopters before I even pick up the mustang. This way I can get an idea of what exactly my adopters are looking for. We also have the discussion about how I train and the methods I use so we can decide together if my program is a good fit for everyone. At this point the fun begins! I will go to the corrals often accompanied by an adopter so I can aid in picking out a mustang that will be a good fit. Through the gentling process I encourage adopters to come to my facility to watch me work with the horse(s.) I feel by allowing my adopters to be involved in the gentling process early on not only will help the mustang transition better when it is time for it to leave my facility, but also helps prevent clashing between horse and handler. If I find a particular horse and adopter aren’t a good fit while still at my facility, I can help to find solutions before a horse is placed into a new home. By doing this, I can help ensure the mustangs that come through my facility aren’t passed around as I work to create lasting partnerships between adopters and mustangs early on. By taking these extra steps to ensure my adopters and mustangs are happy, I have been able to create a TIP program that stands out and truly works well as a business. While I may not TIP out as many horses in a year as other facilities,

I am extremely proud of the horses I do produce as well as the lasting connections between my adopters, myself, and the mustangs.

Rebecca Wittek TRAINER

Rebecca has always had a passion

for horses, but growing up in the city made it hard to pursue. As she grew up, she got involved with horses in any way she could. As soon as she could drive, Rebecca started working at a halter horse-breeding farm in Argyle, TX. Within the four years of working for this farm she learned all the aspects of the breeding industry and skills that she now uses everyday. In may of 2018 she found an amazing place in the mustang world as she picked up her first mustang, a yearling filly for the Ft. Worth Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge. Rebecca and her filly ended up 10th overall and Rebecca's life was changed forever. Since then Rebecca has tipped and competed with several mustangs including placing 8th overall in the finals at her first adult EMM in Oklahoma City August 2021. Mustangs have opened up a whole new world for her from the horses she has trained, the trainers she has learned from and the people she has met. Rebecca is a TIP trainer and will continue to learn and build up her small training business as well as competing with more mustangs in the future.

When to Quit: The best training tip I have ever learned was that you have to know when you quit. You need to end a training session with a horse when it is relaxed and responsive, not stressed and exhausted! A good trainer has learned where the line lies between asking too little and asking too much. The longer you work with horses and the more horses you work with, the easier it gets to read horses body language and see the differences in each horses mental and physical limits while training. A good example would be like a child in school. Just like young children, young horses can have a hard time focusing and retaining information in one session. The younger the horse, the shorter the sessions and the longer the breaks may need to be. This is why kindergartners have naps and longer recess than a 4th grader. When any horse, no matter what age, gives you even a part of the correct answer to what you’ve been asking there needs to be a pat, rub, or reward and then it’s time to move onto another task or be done all together. If you constantly repeat, over and over and you have already gotten a part or whole correct answer, it becomes a punishment and the horse will no longer think what it did was correct. This is how horses get confused and frustrated. Horses and kids are alike in another way, they both learn best when they aren’t being forced. Force creates fear and resentment, and some will not take very much of it before they quit and fight back. Then you have a real problem on your hands! A scared horse can make a dangerous horse. You could be headed for a wreck, but now you have to try and undo what damage has now been done in the horses mind.

Horses are very forgiving animals and you can retrain them from what they have previously learned, but it takes lots of time and dedication. Learn how to read a horse and find the line of when you need to stop. The horse and your future self will thank you!

One Heart with a Heart Horse

by Sarah Rebecca May Burgner Hey there, I’m Sarah and I live in Jonesborough, TN. I have loved all things horses for as long as I can remember. I even used to pretend I was a horse myself, resulting in lots of bruises, knee torn jeans, and an incredibly tolerant mother with nerves of steel. I was fortunate enough to be able to get my own horse at age 10, Ebony. Ebony was a beautiful, 14 y/o jet black Tennessee Walking horse mare who ultimately taught me what it meant to have a relationship with a horse. She was patient, honest, and as kind as they came. As I got a older, and much braver, I started dreaming of show jumping. My sweet “Ebbie” was amazing in so many ways, but being a walking horse, jumping was simple not going to be her best suited discipline. I then had the opportunity to get my first mustang, Bullet. He was a 16 year old, liver chestnut, and was barely 14 hands tall. Nonetheless, he had come from a stable that used him as a school horse for beginner jumpers. My parents bought Bullet from some church friends of ours and the rest is history. That little mustang and I jumped everything in sight! Ebbie was the perfect first horse, but it was Bullet who taught me what horsemanship was...

What Horsemanship Is and Isn’t Ebbie was naturally an absolute sweetheart, she was easy going and wise beyond her years.

However, Bullet was spunky and opinionated. He was the perfect horse for me to not only learn to jump on, but he taught me how be a partner. He challenged me to ask him questions, not just give demands. After about a year of owning Bullet and Ebbie, I was introduced to a program called, Parelli Natural Horsemanship. I was intrigued and mesmerized from the very first clinic my parents took me too. I began to study, watch, and read anything I could about the Parelli program and I was immediately hooked. In natural horsemanship, the focus is on so much more than just disciplines and training. Natural horsemanship is all about a natural approach to the relationship with horses that doesn’t use fear, manipulation, or force on an the animal, but is all about understanding the psychology of how horses think, act, and learn in their natural, God-given behavior. It wasn’t long until I realized that horses, like humans, have different personalities. When we understand our horses’ personality, we can communicate so much more effectively. For instance, Ebbie was slow, gentle, and calm in any situation, whereas Bullet was steady, but more energetic, and would spook when he wasn’t confident. After learning this, I was able to love and lead my horses so much better! There was less confusion and more confidence for me and for them!

“One Heart with a Heart Horse” continued...

I believe God created these magnificent animals for our enjoyment, but I also know He created mankind to take care of these animals and enhance their lives for the better! Natural horsemanship is a total package to me. I feel a true horseman will exemplify the fruits of the spirit as talked about it in the Bible (Galatians 5:22) while working with horses. Such as: patience, kindness, self-control, joy, and gentleness. Natural horsemanship is where we get to enjoy and improve the welfare of God’s creation and creation thanks us by tusting us enough to let us in emotionally or allowing us climb up on its back and taking us for a ride. That feeling of harmony and oneness is unlike anything you’ve ever felt before...

Did you know horses can actually hear a human’s heartbeat from up to four feet away? And within moments they can sync their heartbeat up with ours? It’s because horses are “herd animals.”

God specifically designed them to work off of the energy around them. When we are able to create authentic connection with our horses, it’s essentially like we have one heart. And when we operate with one heart, we can be real partners, and when we become partners with our horse, anything is possible.

Living My Dream...

Now, I’m 26, married to the love of my life, and love all things horses probably more now than I did as a kid; because, I get to enjoy the passion with my husband too! Both Ebbie and Bullet have gone on to “horse heaven” and I now have a full of life quarter horse gelding named Judah. It was Judah and the support of my friends and family that lead me to the starting my business, One Heart Horsemanship.

One Heart focuses on natural mentoring, problem solving, and colt starting. All while using holistic emotional support with the help of essential oils, clear, natural communication styles and confidence methods to provoke the conversation and curiosity between horse and human.

Although my sweet Ebbie and spunky Bullet have passed away, my husband now has a black TN Walker who looks so much like my Ebbie and is a constant reminder of that precious horse my mom found all those years ago, the heart horse who started it all. I am currently taking on clients whether in person problem solving or virtual mentorship. I have a Facebook group where I post weekly tips, how to’s, and encouragement. My ultimate goal for One Heart Horsemanship is to become a TIP Trainer for the Mustang Heritage Foundation. The mustangs will always have a special place in my heart because of my boy Bullet. He and Ebbie gave me the foundation of my horsemanship as well as the kindness and patience from my parents and mentors. And to all of them, I am eternally grateful.

There really is nothing quite like having one heart with your heart horse.

College Station, TX Age 20

Howdy, my name is Jennifer Deden and I am currently located in College Station, Texas.

I was introduced to horses at a young age on my family’s ranch in Centerville, Texas. In 2003, we purchased our first horse, which was a wild mustang; I was only two years old at the time. Since 2003, we have adopted and rehomed over a hundred mustangs. In 2008, I was introduced to the Extreme Mustang Makeover (EMM). In 2011, we learned about the youth EMM and I competed in my first Youth EMM competition at ten years of age. Since then, I have competed in seven EMM’s from 2011 to 2017, which also included the 2011 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover and the 2013 Mustang Million.

Currently, I am a Junior at Texas A&M University pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Animal Science with a Business Minor. I compete with my 2017 EMM mustang, Prince Apollo the 7th (Apollo) in the International Liberty Horse Association, Ranch Horse, Hunter Jumpers, and performance competitions. In the future, I hope to move in the direction of movie performance work. In addition, I train my personal horses, promote mustangs, and liberty work. Lastly, I own a photography business called Jennifer Deden Photography, which I use as a way to support my horses in college. I specialize in equine and agriculture photography including black background photos, events, senior pictures, and candids. Since I started competing in the Youth EMM at a young age, my favorite people to watch are the younger kids in any competition.

Looking back to when I was ten years old, I would not have been able to compete at any of the seven EMM events without the encouragement of my older sisters, and my mentors. The best advice I can give to anyone, especially someone younger, is never to give up and find mentors in your life. A few of my mentors are Miranda Lyon of Miranda Horsemanship, Catie and Elliot Holtzman of Versatile Horsemanship, and Dan James of Double Dan Horsemanship. These amazing people are just a few who have helped me achieve everything I have learned today.

Pursuing An Equine Career To young trainers unsure of pursuing a career in the Equine industry, the world is enormous but small; therefore, do not be afraid to explore it. The equine industry is smaller than you expect.

Find a trainer, equine facility, or an inspiring individual in the equine industry and see if they offer an internship. Internships allow for young individuals to explore different options in industries of interest, which will lead to figuring out if you enjoy it. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself and remember everything takes time, either for you or the horse. When I competed in my first EMM at ten years old, I was the youngest competitor with a wild horse twice the size of me, who was trying to jump out of the loading dock. To say that was a lot of horse for a ten year old would be an understatement. It took longer for me to teach him than it did for my sister to teach her horse.

However, over time we both learned how to work together and most importantly stayed safe, with the help from my older sisters and mentors.

Don’t Forget Why You Started Lastly, remember to enjoy working with horses and have fun. If you aren’t having fun then evaluate, and ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” I have my horse Apollo with me in school, because it requires me to invest at least two hours outside every day while doing something I love. Boarding Apollo in College Station, Texas while I attend Texas A&M University has been the best decision, and the only thing I regret is not doing it sooner.

Before going to college, I always assumed my place was in the equine industry. However, I have recently expanded my knowledge about different agriculture industries, specifically the meat science industry. I joined the 2021 Texas A&M Meat Judging Team, which led me to the realization, I really enjoy meat science. I am planning on always being a part of the equine industry, even if it is not my career path. Lastly, I will one day return to compete in an Adult EMM competition. I am always proud to compete and showcase the versatility of the mustangs and I am excited to see where life takes me next.
