Hello Readers, Greetings from Sakhi Kendra team.

First and foremost I would like to express my sincere gratitude to PHIA and TCS for providing our Sarsaul Block’s Team the biggest opportunity to literate adults from rural areas. I take great pride to share this Annual Report of Computer Based Functional Literacy Project by PHIA and TCS 2017-2018.

Education is the first and foremost rights of every human being. Without education, we are incomplete. Education helps us to set a goal and go ahead by working on that throughout the life. It improves our knowledge, skill, confidence level and personality. It enables us and prepares us in every aspect of life.’

Education is very necessary for the betterment of everyone’s life and thus we all should know the importance of education in our life. Adult education is necessary for the personal enrichment of the people, effective participation in many areas like social, political, international level affairs, professional advancement, etc. Adult education improves individual peacefulness, enhances working efficiency, leads towards progress in life, strives the learning in society.

PHIA and TCS have made the adult education as the matter of great appreciation under the project of “'Nai Shuruat– Sahaj Shiksha Pariyojna” by giving a call to million of adults for education and we, at Sakhi Kendra took it as a challenge as project implementation partner to educate a large number of people of Sarsaul Block, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

This project imparts computer based functional literacy to community members in the age group of 15 to 45 years. With financial support from Tata Consultancy Services , the project was operational in 60 villages of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh and led by community Facilitators. The community facilitators were trained on delivering a pre- designed module, equipped with laptops and projectors and specially designed adult literacy modules. The facilitators have

not limited the teaching- learning process to the pre-designed primers, but spread awareness about health and other related social issues as well. The computer based literacy program was an empowering process both for the facilitator and the community members.

Our team which include 15 Instructors have taught about 4025 women to sign their names, read and write a little bit - which resulted in helping them to get rid of their helpless life due to their illiteracy.

These women had to endure the tragedy of putting the impression of their thumb on various documents in crowds. Due to illiteracy, they face many problems in searching a department for the execution of their work,gettheir work done in banks, finding out any place etc. They had to be humiliated by other people for asking help. They get mistreated by their family. These women used to depend on others because of their illiteracy. This year, they got a new strength through the project. There are many learners who found a new purpose for their life after attending the classes. Now they have decided to pursue their further studies. In this way new ways are opening up to them.

There will be no exaggeration to say that we have worked on many big projects in our social journey, but this project was very special for us, in whichwe have tried our level best to leave no stone unturned to empower a large number of women of rural areas and awakened their sleeping dreams for which we thank PHIA and TCS again for their tremendous support.

About our Instructors : Our 15 instructors were selected for this project based on their performance in both theoretical and practical examinations. We are very happy to share that our instructors were proficient in computer skills and social media and they have commendable ability to understand the pain of illiterate people as well.

Therefore, they have put their great energy to make these women able to read and write. Although they have been faced the challenges of weather, distance from home to the learning center, but they have said that through this project, they have learned so much. They became more confident and self reliant while working on this project.

About our Learners : It was a great experience to meet the highly enthusiastic and dedicated learners during this project. We were amazed to saw a 60 years old woman with a school bag of her grandson. She carried some books and notebooks to attend the classes conducted by our instructor. In a conversation with the woman, we came to know about their thoughts and perseverance to become literate. She said that she do not know if there is any age restrictions in this

project but she just want to learn .. she just want to read and there must be no restriction for it.

Some women continued to attend the learning centres even after receiving a lot of criticism from their family members. But their determination never stop them. Some have told that earlier when they were unable to read the information written on buses, hoardings etc, they felt like to have inferiority complex. But now when they have been able to read the letters together, it seems that they have achieved a huge victory.

When we see children going to school, we know it very well that they are learning to read and write. It is a great feeling to see those children. But we have a slightly different view for the learners of our functional literacy project.

These are the women who had either forgotten that they would ever learn something or have dreamed of learning something. After having a conversation with them, we feel that the people who wrote, passed and effectively implemented this project would never thought that this project can bring a lot of happiness and colours in the life of these rural women. This project has helped them in awakening new dreams and provided them a respectful position in their family and society.

Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the hard working and energetic team members of Sakhi Kendra and it’s clear that our team’s great work is paying off in tangible results. A big thanks PHIA and TCS who supported us in all our endeavours.

Meet our Learners Inspirational stories of our learners who are improving their lives with Functional Literacy Project

My name is Ram kumari. I live in Pali Khurd. I was fond of reading from childhood. But the school was very far from my village. So there was difficulty in going there because of that my biggest dream of gaining education could not be completed. At present I am the village head of Pali Khurd. At first I used to have trouble talking to people, understanding various schemes, policies etc. But through functional literacy project I learned to read and write and started taking part in social programmes. Now, I understand regional problems better. I can read various documents by combining letters. Now I go ahead in the field of politics and consider myself selfsufficient to provide better arrangements to my village. This project has increased confidence within me. So, I would like to convey my thanks to PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra.

I am Shilpi Sonkar, lives in Narwal. When I got married all the people in the house gave me great respect. But when they came to know that I am not literate, I suddenly realized that I have no respect in the house. When this project of PHIA and TCS came in our village, I learned to read and write which made me capable to help my children in their home work and other things. For this, I am thanking to PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra for such a great project.

My name is Geeta Devi. I live in Manilava. I have been married since 20 years. But before January 2018, I did not know how to read and write, but I took no time to register my name when i came to know

about this functional literacy project in our village, so that I could become literate too. Now I can fill the form to withdraw money from my account in the bank. For this, I want to thank the key people behind this great project.

My name is Suman. I could not read or write before because my parents believed that it is not necessary to educate the daughters.

But I did not allow this to happen with my children and I learned to read or write through this functional literacy Project and today I have learned to sign my name, I have been able to withdraw money from the bank, get proper medicines and many more. My confidence has increased a lot and for this, I would like to say a big thanks to PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra.

My name is Neelam. I have learned to read through the project, and as a result there have been many changes in my life. I did not know how to read and write before. But now through this project I have learned to read and write. For this I want to thank PHIA , TCS and Sakhi kendra.

Stories of our Instructors My name is Avantika Awasthi. I live in Kwajagipur. I have been working in COMUTER BASED FUNCTIONAL LITERACY PROJECT for the last one year Initially, when I got an opportunity to work in this project, I was very scared. But gradually I started working. By which the fear of me ended. My selection in this project was done through interview and written examination.

Along with this project, I took part in various social programmes for the wellbeing of our society. I am thankful to PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra for providing me an opportunity to be a part of this prestigious project.

My name is Shweta Awasthi. I live in Narwal. I got a tremendously great opportunity to be involved in this functional literacy project of PHIA & TCS. I have done my level best and leave no stone unturned to literate the rural women. Besides, I have marked my active partcipation in various social work programs.

This project has given me a new direction. First, I used to be scared and afraid, but now my self confidence has increased. So, I am thankful to PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra for their generosity.

 Through this project, there has been a change in people's way of thinking. This project has succeeded in changing the perception about the importance of literacy in the life of both men and women.  Through this project, participation of women in every field has increased.

They are now determined to take any challenge and display great courage in the face of adversities.

 Leadership skills and problem solving skills has been developed in many women.  Through this project, their work efficiency has improved.  Women's social and family life have also improved. They are now getting respect and lead a dignified life.

Letter from our coordinator ............

First of all, I would like to thank PHIA, TCS and Sakhi Kendra because of whom I got the opportunity to connect with this excellent project. Through this project, I participated in many social programs, made people aware of issues related to their rights and wellbeing. I believe that we must have enough perseverence to live a life of dignity and make an identity of our own.

This project have brought many positive changes in me. I was hesitant to share my views with others in my initial years of joining this project. But when I started to go among the people, I talked to them and started enjoying a pleasant experience. I started to feel their problems. This project has metamorphosed from a beautiful dream to an excellent reality. A woman who had to face many problems due to being illiterate, she did not get respect in her family and society. She had enrolled her name in this functional literacy project and now she became capable to read and write on her own. This is the story of many women who are now stepping ahead to achieve their dreams. I hope I will get the opportunity to work with this kind of projects again and get the golden chance to help people and work for the betterment of our society.
