After a challenging two weeks on the road, we are thrilled to reflect on an emphatic win and a resilient draw that really dinepitomose our determination.

Our journey to Queens Park for the Britannia Cup was one for the football pundits to talk about for weeks. As underdogs facing an unbeaten Queens Park side since we last defeated them at the start of the season, we delivered to a man the game plan, The result? A sensational 7-2 victory with outstanding performances across the pitch, a determined performance drove us into a commanding 5-0 lead, a little wobble saw us concede two but we regrouped and scored twice more ourselves, this victory is a testament to the hard work and application of our players this season as we mar have on into the semi finals.

Following this high, we travelled to Crawley Green with a patched-up side for a challenging encounter on a less-than-ideal pitch. Despite the odds, we displayed immense strength and resolve, battling to a well-earned 0-0 draw. This performance highlighted our defensive ability and the unity within our squad.

Building on the success of our last two matches, we now enter a crucial period where every point is vital. As we face a series of tough fixtures, it is important that we continue to show the same determination and commitment we have in the last two games.

Your support has been incredible and is deeply appreciated by the players. Together, we continue to grow and develop as a group and that group includes yourselves.

FROM THE BOARDROOM With Riseley Sports Chairperson David Balderstone

We extend a warm welcome to the players, coaches, officials and supporters of Elstow Abbey Football Club. We have enjoyed somecompetitive matches against Elstow since we were first promoted to the Premier Division in the 1995-6 season. The goalless draw here towards the end of last season saw both defences on top and although we were defeated at Elstow earlier this season, the teamcompeted well.

Today’s game is our first at home in 2025 so it is a good opportunity for the team to lift the spirits of our supporters after a string of disappointing performances against sides below us in the league during November and December. The good habits developed earlier in the season seemed to be forgotten in those games so it must have been very frustrating for Mark and Ryan, as it was for those of us watching those games.

Perhaps fresh after the extended winter break, the team have put in some solid performances in our games during January. Despite having a weakened squad, the team fought hard to secure a welldeserved point at last season’s league champions Caldecote before winning a memorable cup tie at Queens Park Crescents, a very rare win for us at Allen Park, to earn a place in the cup semi-finals.

The victory at Queens Park Crescents highlighted the unpredictability of this season’s league. We remain the only team to have beaten them, fairly comfortably on both occasions, yet have failed to take advantage of opportunities against teams around and below us in the league. With just 5 points separating 6 teams, every win can have a

Elstow Abbey Football Club, founded in 1920, is based in the village of Elstow, just two miles from Bedford. The club’s primary venue has been The Warren, though they’ve had a few relocations within the village over the years. In its early years, Elstow Abbey participated in the Bedford & District Football League, achieving its first significant milestone in 1924 by finishing as runners-up in Division Two. The following year, they reached the Bedford Hospital Cup Final but narrowly lost 2-1 to Potton.

The late 1920s and 1930s witnessed Elstow Abbey’s continued rise. In the 1929/30 season, they won the First Division title, and in 1937, they secured their first county title by lifting the Bedfordshire FA’s Junior Challenge Cup. During this period, they also celebrated victories in the Jubilee Challenge Cup (1934) and the Galletly Cup (1936).

After World War II, Elstow Abbey’s fortunes fluctuated. In 1950, they joined the South Midlands League and finished as runners-up in Division Two in 1954, earning promotion to Division One. However, they struggled at the higher level and were relegated after just one season. Notably, Brian Stapleton, a player from this era, contributed to Bedfordshire FA’s triumph in the FA County Youth Cup in 1955.

Elstow Abbey, a football club with a rich history, faced significant challenges in the mid-1950s. After eventually disbanding in 1956, the club rose from the ashes in 1958, swiftly regaining momentum and winning @riseleysportsfc

the Bedford & District Football League Division 1 title in 1961. The 1960s and 1970s were marked by resilience and sporadic success, with notable victories in the Igranic Challenge Bowl in 1961 and the Galletly Cup in 1981.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Elstow Abbey embarked on a rebuilding journey, achieving remarkable successes. They won the Diamond Jubilee Cup in 1979, the Britannia Cup in 2003, and multiple league titles in the Bedfordshire County League. The 1990s continued to be a period of triumphs, with the club winning the Beds FA Junior Cup in 1993.

The turn of the millennium marked a renaissance for Elstow Abbey. They secured the Bedfordshire County League Division 1 title in 2002 and the Premier Division title in 2004, along with the Britannia Cup in 2003.

However, the club faced another setback and disbanded in 2005. Despite this, they managed to reform in 2006 and compete in Division One of the Bedfordshire Football League.

In recent years, Elstow Abbey has continued to strive for success, maintaining its position as a prominent football club in the Bedfordshire community.

Elstow Abbey Football Club experienced a period of stability and success in the 2010s.

ABBEY F.C triumphed in the Premier Division. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Elstow Abbey demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing promotions and titles, including the Bedfordshire County Football League Premier Championship and the Britannia Cup double in the 2022/23 season.

Beyond its on-field accomplishments, Elstow Abbey Football Club has left a lasting impact on the local community. Wesley Matthews, the club’s previous groundsman, was recognised as the FA Groundsman of the Year in 2018 for his exceptional contributions to maintaining a pristine playing surface. The club also takes pride in nurturing talent, with notable alumni such as Barry Fry, who went on to have a distinguished career in professional football.

At today’s game Riseley Sports is showing its support for the Football v Homophobia campaign.

Football v Homophobia (FvH) takes place year round and the campaign has its Month of Action in February. It is an international campaign to tackle homophobia and prejudice against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) people in football. The aim of FvH is to make football safe and welcoming for everyone.

Prejudice and discrimination in football affects us all, not just LGBT people. In fact a lot of the homophobic language and abuse that is directed at football players, managers, officials and fans, targets heterosexual people. This doesn’t mean that it’s OK. Using discriminatory language towards someone because you don’t like the way they play football, manage a team, make a refereeing decision or because of whom they support is wrong. It’s against the Laws of the Game and can be a criminal offense, but most importantly, it can make football an intimidating and unpleasant place for people.

In recent years, professional footballers Robbie Rogers and Thomas Hitzlsperger, both of whom played in England, publicly announced that they were gay. Both of these players have talked about the challenges of being gay men within professional football, and the impact that anti-gay jokes, language and chanting can have on confidence and self-esteem. Casey Stoney, former England Women’s Captain has also spoken out about her sexuality. Whilst she felt accepted within football circles, she has also spoken of her fears of being judged by the ‘outside world’ for being gay.

Football is changing, and more people are coming out in the professional game. But we still have some way to go to make sure that football is a welcoming sport for all sections of the community.

Throughout Football v Homophobia month and beyond, please help Riseley Sports by standing up to prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people in the game. Together we can make football a welcoming place for everyone.

LEGENDS & The History of Riseley Sports Football Club

Part 10 (2016/2017) In the 2016/2017 season, under the management of Nigel Rees in his second tenure, Riseley Sports Football Club achieved remarkable success by securing both the Bedfordshire County Football League Division Two championship and the Bedfordshire F.A. Junior Challenge Cup. The teams performance was characterised by consistent excellence, culminating in a memorable cup final victory.

Throughout the league campaign, Sports demonstrated dominance, suffering only two defeats over the course of the season. Their offensive prowess was evident as they amassed a total of 93 goals while conceding 43, resulting in a commendable goal difference. The teams form was particularly strong at home, where they won 15 out of 17 matches, showcasing their advantage at Gold Street, Riseley.

The cup final, held at Langford FC, saw Sports face Cranfield United F.C. Reserves. In a decisive 2-0 victory, James Cooke and Mitch Crook each found the net, securing the Junior Challenge Cup for the first time in the clubs history.

This successful season was a testament to the collective effort of the squad, which included players such as George Atkinson, Luke Barnett, Paul Brown, Duncan Campbell, John Capper, James Cooke, Mitchell Crook, Jamie Gibson, Andrew Groom, Jordan Harris, Samuel Harrison, Jack Healy, Jack Henman, Sam Henman, Jake Hislop, James Jermyn, Garry Johnstone, Aaron Keech, Scott Mann, Adam Poole, Josh Poole, Steven Shirley, Jamie Simmons, Alex Taylor, Karl Walker, Jay Willett, and Jason Woolf.

NON-LEAGUE AND GRASSROOTS ARE THE BEDROCK OF FOOTBALL EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY IT

Having played Non-League football, I know how much the game means to the communities that support and grow out of clubs around the country at this level. Passion, hard work, loyalty and enjoyment runs through Non-League, it is the lifeblood of football. In stadiums just like this one, up and down the country, fans, players, coaches and club staff dedicate their afternoons, seasons, sometimes whole lives to supporting the football club they love.

All the people that make games like this possible, on and off the pitch, and the communities that have been created as a result. But, as these communities are becoming increasingly diverse, clubs must do as much as they can to help make fans, players and staff from all different backgrounds feel welcome.

Football should be a game for everyone. Stadiums, whether Non-League or Premier League, should be places where all fans feel like they belong. Where players can revel in incredible football atmospheres without having to worry about supporters crossing the line.

They should be places where fans of all races and religions, women, those with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ communities can access and enjoy matches safe in the knowledge that these spaces are for them as much as they are for anyone else.

Creating footballing spaces free from discrimination is part of what we do at Kick It Out. Alfie Gaunlett, Emmanuel Oyegoke and Luca Phillps found the back of the net for the Town with Noah Marsh and Matt Graver replying for the Blue Cross. Whilst Queens Park Crescents who sit in seventh place with at least three games in hand of all those who sit above them took their unbeaten ways up to seven games with a 4-2 victory at sixth place Elstow Abbey whose replies came via Daniel Green and Marko Tobdzic.

Bedfordshire FA Senior Trophy QuarterFinal Caldecote will now host AFC Oakley at the last four stage following their 7-0 home victory over Flitwick Town. February Pitch Maintenance As winter lingers and the football season remains in full swing, February presents a crucial period for maintaining a football pitch. The cold temperatures, heavy rain, and occasional frost make pitch care challenging, but with the right approach, you can keep the surface in top condition. Here’s a guide on key tasks to complete this month, along with some essential maintenance tips.

Key Tasks for February 1. Aeration (Spiking and Slitting) Winter rain can lead to waterlogging, which affects pitch quality and playability. Regular aeration helps improve drainage and allows air to reach the grass roots. Use a spiking roller or a slit tine aerator to break up compacted soil and encourage healthy growth.

2. Brushing and Drag Matting With high moisture levels, pitches are prone to moss and algae growth. Drag matting or brushing the surface helps stand the grass up, improving airflow and preventing disease. Do this when conditions allow to keep the surface firm and even.

3. Managing Wear and Tear High-traffic areas, such as goalmouths and center circles, suffer the most damage. If possible, rotate training areas to reduce concentrated wear.

Additionally, divot repair should be done after every match to keep the surface level and safe.

4. Fertilisation and Nutrition Even though grass growth slows in cold temperatures, applying a low-nitrogen, high-potassium winter fertilizer will strengthen roots and improve resilience. This helps prepare the pitch for spring growth.

5. Disease and Pest Control Cold and damp conditions create a breeding ground for fungal diseases such as fusarium patch. Keep an eye out for discolored patches and apply an appropriate fungicide if needed. Also, monitor for worm casts, as they can cause muddy patches that affect ball roll.

• Plan for spring renovations - Use February to assess long-term needs, such as overseeding or topdressing in the coming months.
