The Invisible Force Design Principle Studio Design

Location: RISD Farm, Providence, Rhode Island Date: 09/ 2018- 12/ 2018 Type: Individual Work Instructor: Adam Anderson In the design principle studio, we were asked to systematically study the phenomena of the site, RISD Farm, and design two outdoor labs to reveal those phnomena based on our experience. I personally considered the site has two opposite characters, so I designed two labs with relatively opposite phnomena in winter and summer. When people visit these two labs, they would feel there is an invisible force between them so that they would subconsciously learn how wind, vegetation, light, and shadow, which the invisible force actually is, work together to create a system.

At the first stage of the studio, we were asked to develop a module that could form either rigid or flexible structures. Then, we texted how the structure filter lights and observed how the forces transport through the structure.

After visiting the RISD Farm, each of the students was assigned to a pit to study the soil structure. The soil profile helped me understand different layers of the soil and how much organic materials contained in each layer. The models enabled me to further analyze moisture, particle sizes, and porosity of the soil.

From hand-making models, I also developed a linear module based on the original paper module. This module would help me analyze the whole site at the next stage.

The woodland at RISD Farms functions as a twosided filter. View decays at a different speed when people stand on the different side of the woodland.

This phenomenon is caused by topography, distance, and density of vegetations.

Parti Diagram To apply what I learnt to the design, I focused more on the difference between the two sides. The phenomenon I was most interested in was light and shadow. From this design, I would like people to notice that light and shadow are not fixed. There are rooms of light in rooms of shadow and rooms of shadow in rooms of light. Even if we zoom in to the minimal, light and shadow are also changing with time. Thus I built two labs, one on the ridge and one in the woodland.

Using the linear module developed before, I made an armature model of the site. Wood chips stand for surface water on the ground, water table, and canopies of the woodland. The form of the wood chips also indicates the shape of the landform.

Piano wires are root systems and trunks of the woods. Thus, the denser the wood chips are, the wetter the site is. The denser the piano wires are, the denser the vegetations are. The wood chips also show the concept of the two-sided filter.

Winter

In the woodland lab, the evergreens are planted in the north while the deciduous are planted in the south. Therefore, the lab will be cool and shady in summer because of the canopy, and warm in the winter because the evergreen trees block the north wind, and sunshine could cast down because there is no canopy in the south.

In the ridge lab, the small evergreens are planted in the south while the deciduous are planted in the north. Thus, the lab will be hot in the summer while cold in the winter because the site embraces the wind.

For the detail design, vegetations would be planted in three different groups according to the structures and canopies. As the sun passes by, different kinds of shadow would be cast on the ground, so that visitors could notice the temporal dimension of light and shadows 7

The Last RISD Ride is at 3 a.m.

Currently, the site is in-between two main streets of Providence, North Main Street and Water Street, and two teaching buildings of RISD, BEB and ID Building. Based on site analysis, I think the site could function as a guide to lead people from North Main Street to Riverside and vice versa. To achieve it, I define some attractions along the street and Riverside, analyze where on the site can people see these attractions and finally get two view corridors as the results.

Constructed Ground Studio Design

Location: the Parking lot of the BEB, Providence, Rhode Island Date: 01/ 2019- 02/ 2019 Type: Individual Work Instructor: Joseph James In the constructed ground studio, we were asked to use grading as a tool to redesign the parking lot outside our department building. Based on the site analysis, I considered the site as a connection between two streets and two teaching buildings. According to my own experience, students in these two teaching buildings sometimes stay up late, so I'd like to reform the site to a place where students could take a breath from their heavy work and refresh themselves.

Type of Passerby

Another possibility of the site is that it could be a connection between ID Building and BEB and function as a shared space for both departments. Students from these two departments sometimes stay up late, so I want this design to be a place for them to relax at night. I observed and analyzed which windows of these two buildings are bright at night and what space these window lights define at the parking lot. The bright space at night will be the activity areas in the design.

The upper area of the site will be multiple seating steps. It is a more private space on the site. Students could spend several minutes there having lunch or smoking. The middle area will be a passing by area since it is dark at night, but it's not boring because water will gather beside the roads because of the landform. The area below will be the central gathering space. Students could have BBQ there or outdoor exhibitions. The vegetation areas will become the buffers to avoid influences from the streets.

Fo Ding Palace A New Attraction

The lack of burial land has been a serious issue in Nanjing nowadays. The government only issue land permit of 30 years for burial land. On the other hand, Nanjing has prohibitted cemetery construction since 27 years ago. It will be no future supply for burial land in Nanjing.

HongJue Temple Cemetery was built in 1990. During the 27-year usage, it has lost most of its green space to concrete tombs. The gaps between tombs are too narrow to provide a proper mourn environment.

The design was based on the tourism regional planning project in my senior year. After examing the site again, I noticed an old cemetry in the site, which was impeamearble and of high density. And this is also the shared situation for most public cemeteries in Nanjing. Thus, I was intrigued to find a more sustainable way of burial that can serve the purpose of memorial and also be efficient in space. During my exploration, I added another layer of ecological planning with artificial construction to stress the natural cycle, of which death is part.

Cremation is the most prevalent way of burial in Nanjing nowadays, nevertheless, in rural area, some people still prefer inhumation. Both these two burial ways take a piece of land for grave. Once the land is taken, it is hard for cemetery land to convert into other land use. As a result, the government has little incentive to provide more land for cemetery use as land resource in urbanized area becomes more and more limited. Thus, these two common types of burial are no longer suitable when facing the high-density development of urban area.

Other than inhumation and cremation, Cliff burial and indoor burial are two other traditional ways that have been employed in a few other Chinese regions. However, cliff burial highly depends on landform while indoors burial could only happen when families live in bungalows. The main idea of sea burial and sky burial is to turn remains into food of eagles or fish. In this way, the dead become part of the cycle of nature again, which is highly eco-friendly but not cultrally acceptable for a lot of people.

Eco-burial is a recent trend that shares the idea of "returning to Nature" but includes products which are more civilized and visible. Among forms of eco-burial, wall burial makes full use of vertical space like cliff burial. Organ donation, tree burial and flower burial inherit the core value of sea burial and sky burial, but in a more romantic way. These improvements allows eco-burial to gain a better opportunity in urban development.

Ecological sensitivity and construction suitability are the two dimensions I used to evaluate land value. Ecological sensitivity stands for the ability or the posibilities of an area to aviod environmental disruption and protect itself when facing external interference. Construction suitability is a measurement of how suitable artificial consturction can be appiled to an area.

In order to evaluate, I firstly picks up 11 primary indicators and divide each primary indicator into 3 classes. Then I utilize AHP to give each primary indicator a proper weight. I imported each indicator as a layer in ArcGIS then use the weight to calculate the final result.

Historical Slices

The site has been experiencing a dramatic change in the last 2 decades. In general, the site is constantly losing green space.Up to 2016, woods in HongJue Temple cemetery (A) has been completely replaced by tombs. Farmland in the north (B) was firstly replaced by bungalows. After the village was abandoned, it became deserted land. Land in the middle of the site (C) was also a village till 2011.

After being abandoned for 3 years, it was built up as a park in 2015.

Now this area is at the first stage of ecological recovery.

Within my design, to relieve the pressure of the cemetery, it is reasonable to utilize bare land in the north into burial land. Tombs in the original cemetery will be resettled in the north. In the next 5 years, tree burial areas will be built in the old cemetery. Up to 10 years, flower burial and wall burial areas will also be finished. There is no cremation area in the new cemetery. Tree burial and flower burial areas will be built within 5 years. After 10 years, wall burial 23

Types of Burial

Tree Burial In tree burial areas, each tree represents a dead person. Relatives are allowed to choose the representative species for the deceaseds. As time goes by, tree burial areas will be promoted from simple cemeteries to woods.

Wall Burial Area This area is composed of a series of sunken plazas which are framed by walls and decorated by grass and water fountain. The walls are made of customized metal sheets, Embedded in the wood frames, visitors can open and rotate these walls.

Flower burial areas are collective cemeteries.

Cremains will be spilt into these areas and flowers will grow as the number of the dead increasing. With these areas developing, they will finally became flower fields for leisure. No cemeterial signs will be found except the sculptures.

Vegitation Planting

Tree burial area provides the opportunity to memorize a beloved one with a new form of life. Relatives pick their plant species and buried the deceased in containers under the tree. The dead body will provide nutrition to the young plant as a new cycle of life starts.

Site Analysis Tengfeiyuan Residential Community was built in 2000.

There are almost 8000 residents , most of which are retired teachers and professors. There are two activity centers, a kindergarten, a middle school, a central square and a special school for children and teenagers with intelligent impediment and psycological issues. Tengfeiyuan Residential Community Landscape Design Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu Date: 11/ 2017- 12/ 2017 Type: Individual Work Advisors: Ying Zhou, Gege Wang The design was based on the reserch training program I participated in senior year. The original study focused on therapeutic landscape while this time I decided to observe the site from another perspective. I noticed that the community lacked energy and there was no communication among different types of people. Thus, in the new design, I focused on breaking the invisible wall and introducing new energy to the community. In addtion, I also tried to express my corcern to the disadvantaged, the elders and children with intellgent impediments in this case, by meeting their physical and mental needs in the landscape design form.

For me, the keys to meet their needs are to break the wall and to create new feelings with existing elements.

I find out that the trainings elders and special children have are almost the same, which means they could recieve do exercise together. Besides, their physical exercises did not require professional facilities, so they can do exercise in normal activity spaces. Therefore, I divided these activites into six categories. I designed spaces that can be shared by all residents for each types of the activities. In this way, it would be more likely for residents different demographic groups to meet each other.

For further study, I categorized the residents into four (demographic) groups: elderly people, white collars, normal students and special children. Then I did a survey about their daily life to to understood their needs for improvements and to find the common activities or routines among the four. The essential needs of the elders and special children are selfesteem and social activity with other groups, while the other two groups of residents wanted a more interesting life.

To bring all residents together, the first thing to do is to link existing public spaces together. Thus, my design starts with a runway which links city streets, the central square, the kindergarten, schools and activity centers together. Not only could residents travel on the runway, passers could also be introduced to the community. Then, I set a series of facilities ranging from playground to horticulture square to meet the needs of different people.

The focus of the central plaza design was to bring the people in the community together as well as attracting people outside to enter the community. The central plaza consisted of two major parts. One was a sporting park which was open to the main street in the south while the other was multiplelevel squares with a runway fuctioning as a tunnel which leads people into the community.

In this design, I wanted this two parts to share a similar form language but meanwhile in a significant visual contrast. Thus, materials with dim colors were used in the sporting park while strip-shape tiles with rainbow colors were used in the squares.

Besieds vegetation mentioned before, residents could plant other herbs on the horticulture square on their own. The planting beds are on different levels: on the ground, 0.5m and 1.0m.In this way, people on wheelchair could also participate in horticulture.

Training stairs are a series of staris running up and down. There are two types of rise height, 10cm and 15cm. The whole stairs peaks at 1.75m.

Visual Interpretation and Spatial Representation of the Movie " "Predestination" Type: Individual Work Advisors: Gege Wang, Zhuoni Yang This study came from my interest of sci-fi movies. The idea of translate time travels into a spatial experience came to me after watching the move " Predestination ".My translating process started from analyzing the multiple storyline of the movie to abstract these storyline as simple geographical form.

Then I used these geographical abstract to generate various spatial forms according to the storyline. My final step was to choose the most important storyline in the movie as representative then visually combined all events of this storyline as a spatial representation.

To start with, I choose eleven important events in the film and give them values from one to eleven. Then I study the timeline of the charactors individually to see how the numbers jumps as the film goes by. After studying the film carefully, I found that there are actually two storylies in the film. The first one is about Single Mother, including Jane and John; the other one Final mission consists the stories of the barkeeper and the Fizzle Bomber.

The core metaphor of the film is Ouroboros, a snake which bites its own tail. This line inspires me to utilize torus as the prototype of the study.

The radius of the two circle sin the prototype may stand as the two storylines in the film.

In my study, I try to change the two radius of torus according to the film.

After generating the nine individual forms, focused on how to combine these spatial component as a whole to provide a more complex spatial experience under the framework of the movie. Thus, based on my own understatnding, I choose the most important event in the whole story, the explosion event, as the subject and select the four individual space form which directly connected to this event.

In this assignment, I was aksed to express some terms in the form of photography.

My model, Duolan Dihua, and I tried to create completely different effects without any after-effect softwares. We took these pictures by only manipulating light and camera settings. All the photos were taken in the same place.
