Welcome!

Inside

Welcome to the first ever Ripon Farm Services magazine! Created to keep you and your business On Track with both the latest news from Ripon Farm Services and the latest innovations from our industry leading manufacturers. Let’s look back at 2023... After a record breaking year, where turnover and profitability both improved significantly, investments have been made in our infrastructure and capabilities to ensure we are well placed to meet the ongoing needs of our customers. Key landmarks were the completion of the brandnew 22,000 sq ft depot at Malton and the acquisition of F G Adamson & Son, which has enabled the company to offer professional turfcare machinery and servicing. Our Managing Director, Geoff Brown, who cofounded Ripon Farm Services over 40 years ago, was made an MBE for services to the rural economy in the King’s Birthday Honours List. The year was then rounded off by the news that Geoff has been appointed to the prestigious position of President Elect of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, taking up his post in September 2024. We are looking forward to 2024 and we are delighted to be hosting the 20th Ripon Farm Services show on 24th & 25th January at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate. Thank you for your continued support, we do hope you can join us at the show, it would be great to see you!

We welcome F G Adamson & Son into the Ripon family At the beginning of 2023, we completed the acquisition of F G Adamson & Son, welcoming them into the Ripon family and entering us into the professional turf market. This acquisition means that we now offer professional turfcare machinery and servicing to our customers. F G Adamson & Son, which serves customers across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, was established more than 75 years ago and has been selling and servicing John Deere machines for more than 25 years. It has two depots: Swanland, near Hull; and Look out for the changes coming Langworth, near Lincoln – both have now been merged into our over the next few months! portfolio, with all staff being transferred as part of the process. Geoff Brown said: “This is really good news for RFS, its staff, customers and the John Deere brand. This is the next stage in the evolution of our business as we offer our services to the professional turf market for the first time. “F G Adamson & Son is a hugely-respected business with a strong reputation for excellent customer service, and we know that the high standards set by the staff for more than seven decades will need to be continued. With its staff, we are privileged to be taking on experts in their field, and they will be instrumental in ensuring a seamless transition.” Chris Meacock, Division Sales Manager for Turf at John Deere, said: “We owe Gillian, John, Mike and the whole Adamson family a huge debt of thanks for the fantastic service they have given John Deere’s customers over the past 25 years. RFS has an enviable reputation for looking after our agricultural customers and I have no doubt it will continue to thrive with its new professional turfcare service offering on board.” After the addition of F G Adamson to the Ripon family last spring, we have recently decided to bring the identity of the business in line with the rest of the Ripon group. As a result of this, from the 1st January 2024, F G Adamson & Son will become ‘Ripon Ground Care’. The update means that we will have one identity for our turf and lawn division across the business. This will resonate with the rest of the group and will give a clear message to our customers, whilst allowing us to continue building on the reputation that both our existing ground care department and F G Adamson & Son have built through the years.

Introducing Ripon Technology! Ripon Technology is all about solutions and helping our customers be the best in their field. The world of farming is changing fast, agriculture is becoming more complex and is demanding long-term focus and dedication no matter what the seasons may bring. Technology and digitilisation play a key role nowadays in maximising yields and crop quality while optimising operational efficiency. We have access to the best technology in the market; using John Deere technology we can connect mixed machine fleets, fields and operators in real-time and in all relevant data formats. The technology allows faster reporting, better decision making and data availability. Machines can be steered automatically for significantly reduced overlap; implements get connected, automatically set up and automated, all leading to higher yields and less input costs. Ripon Technology run regular operator training sessions, software updates and demonstrations covering displays, GPS receivers, JDLink and John Deere Operations Center. As technology continues to evolve the Ripon Technology team can bring added value to your business.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL

Getting more from your Harvest with John Deere HarvestLab: a sit down with the Swires Family Using John Deere technology to both produce silage more efficiently and apply slurry more sustainably is paying off financially and environmentally for the Swires family. When brothers Gary and Steven Swires decided to take further control of their silage-making back in 2019 little did they know it would be such a pivotal step. They began with HarvestLab technology on their forager but after seeing the benefits, the brothers are now using three applications – on the forager, the turntable and now in their slurry applications. Running 400 commercial Holstein Friesian milkers, 700 heifers and rearing beef animals to sell as stores, the brothers farm at High Moor Farm near Harrogate with sons Jack, Jordan and Dan. Located in a nitrate vulnerable zone, their 324 hectares (800 acres) are mainly down to grass. While most silaging operations are carried out in-house, a contractor was historically used for harvesting. But when an opportunity came along to buy their own self-propelled forage harvester for the 2019 season, they felt the prospect of taking full control of their silage-making from start to finish was too good to miss. “It gave us the opportunity to cut at the right time and when the weather is right, rather than wanting a contractor when everybody wants one,” Steven says. With milk sold to Arla and the farm paid for milk solids, their main goal from better silage was to raise butterfat protein, but there was also an increasing focus on farming more efficiently and sustainably. So when another opportunity arose just 18 months later to upgrade their first John Deere forager to one fitted with John Deere HarvestLab technology, which not only measures grass yield but also quality at harvest, they realised they could take the way they grow grass for silage to the next level. The Swires family; from left to right – Jack, Jordan, Gary, Steven and Dan.

8

ON TRACK WINTER 2024

RIPONFARMSERVICES.COM

Application 1 – On the Forage Harvester HarvestLab technology allows the family to understand the quality of the grass at the time of harvest. Using near infrared (NIR) the HarvestLab measures characteristics such as % dry matter, sugar, crude protein and fibre content. It informs farmers which fields are performing the best and enables them to grade their silage there and then. As a result they can put the highest quality grass into the clamp for the higher-yielding cows. “We can see the quality of the silage as it’s coming in on its way to the clamp, so if it’s like rocket fuel we can put it separately in the clamp. We can feed the cows relative to what is in the heap,” Gary’s son, Jack says.

Application 2 – On the Turntable HarvestLab has also allowed them to conduct their own day to day analysis of silage samples direct from the clamp. In the winter they might have two cuts open at once, running the silage through the turntable in the office ensures proper bunk management and accurate feed rationing. It’s a mobile laboratory, no more waiting for lab results. Straight away, the Swires found this revealed significant ME variation even within the same cut, therefore enabling them to give the higher ME material to the higher yielding cows, resulting in a rapid uplift in milk production. The more silage and better quality silage, the better the milk quality. The Swires have experienced better butterfat and protein since making their own silage, which has been worth 2ppl, which in turn has covered the harvester investments. The family are also able to use the yield and quality maps produced to identify poorer-performing areas of fields to improve how silage fields are managed. Yield and quality field maps help with fertilizer costs and slurry application too, applying higher doses in field areas showing yield or quality shortfalls and lower doses elsewhere.

Application 3 – Slurry application

Analysing HarvestLab statistics.

HarvestLab technology analyses the constituents of slurry, not only during filling, but during application too. Natural nutrient variations and settling during transport are taken into account and compensated with automatic real-time speed and/or flow rate adjustments. The Swires family wanted to utilise all HarvestLab applications and had the equipment fitted on their slurry tanker and umbilical in March 2023. Located in nitrate vulnerable zone, it’s helpful that volume can be mapped, maximizing yield and quality while keeping within the legal limits. Knowing the constituents and volume of what your field has had avoids down crop and gains more consistent crop growth, plus all data goes straight to the John Deere Operations Center enabling further analysis later. The Swires didn’t apply any fertiliser on their fourth cut in 2023 due to their use of HarvestLab, commenting on it being the most even crop they have ever had. “With slurry, you can change the application instantly as you’re doing it. Harvesting is more collecting data, monitoring what you’re doing, but slurry you’re more than monitoring it, you can react to the data too. Some people spread slurry without knowing what they’re putting on, it’s good to know what part of the field has had what” Jack says. Ripon's Regional Manager, Richard Halsall says, “For us, it’s great to see farmers gaining tangible financial benefits from the smart technology that we provide. We’re all passionate about agriculture, and we get a real sense of achievement when we help our customers evolve toward the accuracy, efficiency and traceability standards that we will all need to be sustainable and successful in the long term.” One season done for the Swires family using HarvestLab for their slurry applications, and it has already saved some fertiliser costs. The family plan to continue using this technology, saving more going forward with variable rate fertiliser applications from their yield maps too.

‘Slurry is no longer a waste product, it makes you think twice’ New – In addition to the three uses of HarvestLab within the “greencrop sector” HarvestLab is now available on John Deere Combines, on-the-go measuring of moisture, protein, starch and oil values in Wheat, Barley and Rapeseed.

To find out more about HarvestLab technology (for any or multiple application/s) please contact our Technology team on 07700 152217. ON TRACK WINTER 2024

Drive your future with John Deere Apprenticeships Together with John Deere we are celebrating 30 years of their apprenticeship programme, recruiting and supporting technicians to work across agriculture, turf and parts.

There’s never been a better time to consider a John Deere apprenticeship with Ripon Farm Services. As the agricultural and turf machinery business becomes more technologically advanced, utilising satellite navigation systems, Formula 1 transmission technology, computerised controls and advanced, fuel-efficient engines, the need for skilled people working in the industry becomes ever greater. It’s not just about the machines either. Sophisticated parts and service systems require the same skills too. The apprenticeship scheme is stimulating and challenging, with a wide range of opportunities and exciting prospects for the right people. Whatever your interest, there is a role for you.

What is a John Deere Apprenticeship?

Rebecca Watson, Workshop Tech Apprentice at our Ripon branch.

10

ON TRACK WINTER 2024

All John Deere apprenticeship programmes combine paid employment with training, leading to nationally recognised and valued qualifications. Apprentices work at our depots but also spend time at the John Deere Apprentice Training Centre and at John Deere’s headquarters, both near Nottingham. You are supported by a Ripon Farm Services mentor, gaining valuable workplace skills by undertaking practical tasks and experiencing real-life challenges. Three courses make up the programme: Ag Tech – focusing on agricultural machinery; Turf Tech – focusing on professional turf equipment; and Parts Tech – focusing on parts service and support. “It’s a hugely exciting time to be part of the agricultural and turfcare industries – they are evolving and becoming more technologically advanced than ever before,” John Deere Branch Training Manager Allan Cochrane says. “The job is so much more than just servicing and fixing things. The machines and parts our apprentices work on and with are some of the most advanced in the world, many capable of levels of automation or operating at capacities we could only dream of a few years ago.”

“It‘s not just about spanners, hammers and getting covered in grease and oil. It is about the mind-blowing technology that is built into agricultural and turf machinery.” Former John Deere Apprentice

Two of our apprentices, Ben Blakey (from our Tadcaster branch) and Quintin McGroryHill (from our Darrington branch) completed their John Deere Ag Tech Apprenticeships in 2022. They have recently been involved with some photography and filming – so look out for them in the latest John Deere Apprenticeship promotional video!

AG TECH With the emphasis firmly on farm machinery, you will develop skills and proficiency in a wide range of technical areas, from routine maintenance and servicing through to complex component overhauls utilising the very latest John Deere diagnostic equipment.

TURF TECH This turf engineering apprenticeship develops exactly the same skills as its agricultural equivalent, but with the focus more on machines used by golf courses, sports grounds, local authorities, landscapers and country estates.

PARTS TECH As a company John Deere is renowned not just for its machinery, but also for its outstanding parts and service support. This apprenticeship concentrates on how to manage John Deere’s sophisticated parts systems, run a profitable retail environment, merchandise goods effectively, and understand the value of John Deere products and the importance of selling on quality rather than on price.

Apprenticeship Q&A How long does it last? The apprenticeship programmes last from one to three years, depending on the programme undertaken. Most of your time is spent at one of our depots where you learn on the job, but with the added benefit of classroom and workshop tuition/ training at the John Deere Apprentice Training Centre in Nottinghamshire. What qualifications do I need to apply? Applicants should ideally have a minimum of three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, a willingness to learn and an interest in working at Ripon Farm Services. Why choose a John Deere Apprenticeship? John Deere’s Ag Tech training scheme was introduced in 1992, making it the longest running programme of its kind in the UK. In 1997 the programme won a National Training Award, and has gone on to win many other industry accolades. More than 1200 apprentices have graduated through the John Deere schemes to date. In addition, 13 Ag Tech graduates have received a National City & Guilds Medal for Excellence award, a unique achievement in the engineering sector. How do I apply? Get to know... Alex Purser Customer Support Manager We sat down with Alex Purser, who is the Customer Support Manager in the Connected Support & Customer Support Team. We asked Alex about her day to day life at Ripon Farm Services, her role, and how she works throughout the company.

1. What does your role entail? “My role is a customer supporting role as well as liaising between internal depots and departments. I work on the operational aspects with customers, ensuring the larger fleets of connected machines are supported, from service work to monitoring alerts. I support my team, service teams and parts managers to help in general but also to help with promotions and how to improve things where needed. I also support people across the company, ensuring the journey from start to finish is a better experience across the board, for both customers and staff.”

2. Tell us a bit about the background of the team “The team started in June 2023. Between us, we have 33 years experience with John Deere and customer service. Sarah joined in June at the beginning then we welcomed Caroline to the team in July. The team was created in order to provide an outlet for customers to receive full rounded support. We wanted to create a proactive aftermarket interface to ensure all customers are kept informed and up to date, and all their needs are met. It is important to us that they are looked after, kept in the loop and that we continue building the relationships with our customers. Our aim is to free up the increasing work load of other staff members to make sure customers are always satisfied and to streamline the whole operational process.”

3. Tell us about a typical day in the customer service team “The phone usually rings first thing which kick starts the day. From then on, we speak to various people throughout the day, taking both inbound and outbound calls from both colleagues and customers - it’s great getting to chat with people from Teeside to Yorkshire, down to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire! We are also busy monitoring John Deere platforms to ensure customers’ machines are optimised and working as efficiently as possible. One thing’s for sure, we’re never short of tea, coffee and a good atmosphere!”

4. What value does your team bring to our customers? “We’re a trusting team. We look after customer’s machines and fleets, from little lawnmowers up to big combines. Our aim is to simplify everything, taking the hassle out of having to remember booking in services, with the aim of making things more convenient for them. We have fun with the customers, we give them an outlet and provide some hopefully entertaining conversation as well as reassurance. We’re a point of contact if anything goes wrong, or just as someone to talk to. If a customer doesn’t know where to turn, we can signpost them in the right direction and help to resolve things as best as possible.”

6. What do you and your team enjoy most about your role? Alex: “I think for me it’s making sure the customers are satisfied.” Caroline: “For me it is just talking to the customers, getting to know them and having a chat. You never know what a customer will say next, which is great.”

7. What other ways can you support our customers? “If you’re stuck in a tractor and just want a chat, give us a call. If you need help or advice, if you can’t get to the right person, we are always there as a back up and we are happy to help.”

If you’d like to speak to the Customer Support team or need help with the monitoring of your machines, contact us on 07700 152220 or email csc@riponfarmservices.com The Customer Services team work out of our Malton branch but provide support for the whole Ripon group.

NEW PRODUCT ALERT! Kuhn Aura Feeder KUHN has launched a new self-propelled, autonomous diet feeder capable of feeding 280 cows which works autonomously using GPS and RTK to move around a farm collecting and feeding out a TMR. Inbuilt loading and weighing modules calculate the exact mix of forage material including grass and maize, along with any supplements and concentrates required. The AURA’s 3m mixing tank features two vertical augers that require a lower power requirement and feature KUHN’s K-NOX technology to guarantee a service life of six times longer than steel alternatives. The mixing and chopping speed can be adjusted to create a homogenous TMR with a palatable consistency. A 56hp (42kW) diesel engine can power the AURA for up to a week of continual loading and feeding, making it a truly autonomous machine. The Kuhn AURA is remarkably compact, standing at 2.6m high, 1.9m wide and just under 7m long which helps it to move around most areas of the farm including feed passages and clamps. It feeds out at a speed of 2km/h on both the left and right using a conveyor, and can travel at up to 7km/h. Farms choosing an AURA will be mapped and WIFI devices installed to enable connectivity throughout. The Kuhn AURA is expected to be availble in the UK from 2024/2025. Ifor Williams: right behind you since 1958 Ripon trailer centres are, of course, part of the Ripon Farm Services family, with four specialist outlets representing the world-renowned Ifor Williams brand. Ifor Williams started making trailers back in 1958, and were immediately welcomed by farmers as light but strong trailers that were easy to load and drove superbly. At that time nearly all trailers were heavy, awkward units that were lacking in any new developments. The Ifor Williams trailers soon got a really strong following within agriculture and when the product range was expanded to cater for other industries’ needs, the whole thing took off. Today, the reputation of Ifor Williams trailers has led to an excellent residual value, as well as strong user demand.

Let’s look at a few reasons that make an Ifor different from its competitors: 1 Ifor Williams use leaf spring suspension, which provides reliable and safe running. 2 Ifor Williams use third party testing to prove durability by MIRA. 3 Many years of Ifor manufacturing development has lead to the use of superior components such as Fenner tipping gear. 4 Manufacturing responsibility, such as product recall for faulty supplier goods. 5 Product innovation such as a combination ramp/ back door on a HBX horsebox. As the supply chain opens up, we will be looking to have a large cross-section of Ifor Williams products available across all our depots and look forward to welcoming all our customers, new and existing.
