Crusaders claim CCS crown over Monarchs
By Santino Woo ’22 As Antonio Pusateri ’22 softly laid the ball into the hoop with less than a minute remaining, the Archbishop Riordan bench and crowd exploded with joyful emotions knowing the inevitable was about to happen. The final buzzer sounded and the Archbishop Riordan Varsity Basketball team began to run across the court, hugging and celebrating as they squashed Archbishop Mitty’s dreams of capturing a third Central Coast Section (CCS) Open Division Championship in a row on Feb. 18, at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. Led by King-Njhsanni Wilhite’s ’23 game-high 29 points and a combined 26 points from Marcellus Edwards ’22, Quinton Bundage ’24, and Jasir Rencher ’25, the Crusaders came home with the CCS Open Division Championship trophy and avenged their overtime loss last year in the same championship

With this win, the Crusaders now have 16 CCS Championships. Center Brendan PassanisiBoullet ’22 described winning the championship as “surreal.”
“I could hear my family cheering behind me, I saw the student section going crazy and it was just a surreal feeling, especially since this season was so grueling, with some weeks having four games.
He held us to high standards but also allowed for real conversations to take place during class and in the halls.” She recalled the most meaningful conversations she has had with Reardon over the years and highlights that he always made her feel like her perspective mattered. Reardon was hired by newlyhired President Currier in 2017. He reminisced and stated that during their time at Riordan, they were “a good match.” “We are both very good friends, we were good at things the other wasn’t, and we complimented each other well,” Reardon added. As principal, he witnessed many historic events at Riordan, such as the gym renovation, the institution of the House System, the creation of the Engineering Program, the opening of Mayer Family Field, the school becoming a coed institution, the impact of COVID-19, and most recently, the creation of the Biomedical
Program. “All these major events have made me a better leader,” stated Reardon. “I got to collaborate with an amazing group of administrators and directors to ensure a smooth transition to coeducation, and we used every possible resource to become the first SF high school approved for reopening.” During the times of isolation due to COVID, Reardon believed that “kids needed to get back in the classrooms as soon as possible.” Both he and Currier understood the negative effects of isolation, and they wanted students to experience the fun of being around their friends every day. After the departure of Currier at the end of the 2020-2021 school year, Reardon was named interim president up until this February.
To know that we beat everyone else and won the CCS Championship is just a surreal feeling I’m still wrapping my head around.” He continued talking about the locker room energy by saying, “As far as after the game in the locker room, it was about as crazy as you can expect. Hugging, yelling, maybe some crying. We were all so ecstatic to avenge last year’s team and it was just a perfect moment.” This season has been nothing short of remarkable for the Crusaders as starting point guard Whilhite broke two records this season. He currently has the most points scored in a single-season with 319 points and the highest scoring average in a league season with 22.86 points-per-game. The Archbishop Riordan Boys’ Varsity Basketball team looked a lot different than it did last year, after impactful players such as

Timothy Reardon is the new president of Archbishop Riordan High School, succeeding Dr. Andrew Currier. On Feb. 9, the official announcement was made to the Riordan community. Reardon has been serving as the school’s principal for the past five years, including this year, fulfilling the duties of both principal and interim president after the departure of Currier. Reardon began his teaching career after college, at age 22, teaching English at his alma mater: Saint Ignatius. He coached basketball for 25 years and later became the alumni director at Saint Ignatius. Social Science teacher Jackie Grealish was one of Reardon’s students at Saint Ignatius. She stated, “Mr. Reardon was a great teacher because he was so approachable. What I think most students appreciated about him was that he treated us like adults.
