Welcome to Rio. Rio Lindo Adventist Academy is a co-educational, boarding/day high school owned and operated by the Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. As a Christian school, Rio has developed a school program grounded on the principles of loving God and serving others. Founded in 1962, the school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and provides an enriched, college preparatory curriculum with numerous elective classes, allowing you to pursue a wide variety of interests.

At Rio, our qualified and caring teachers will guide you on a exciting journey of discovery. All Rio classes share the common goal of helping you become an imaginative, independent and analytical thinker. You will learn in well-equipped science, computer, home and industrial arts labs, and enjoy access to technology in all classrooms. Rio’s administration and teachers are continually striving to discover and develop effective educational methods to improve your learning experience, with an emphasis on clear and measurable standards. As Christians, staff members are committed to a balanced approach to education, focused on improving your body and soul as well as your mind. The quality and dedication of Rio’s staff is reflected in multiple student surveys that identify a caring staff and faculty as the greatest strength of the school program. Rio’s academic program supports and empowers each individual student. Our School Counselor, Dean of Students, and student support team work to meet students needs both inside and outside of the classroom and help students build a foundation for success beyond high school.

Rio Curriculum C HA LL EN GE YOURSELF
As you plan your course of studies, you can chose from three possible diploma options — general diploma, college preparatory diploma, and honors diploma. If you are an honors student looking to stretch your mind, then you can take math classes up through Calculus, three levels of Spanish, and honors classes in History and English. All college preparatory and honors classes are approved through the University of California. If you have difficulty in a subject area and need extra help, staff members will assist you by offering tutoring and counseling to provide you with the tools necessary for a successful academic program. For international students with English as a second language, ESL classes will give you the required skills for success as you complete high school and prepare for college or university entrance. Rio is an official TOEFL testing site, so you can assess your progress in English by taking the regularly scheduled TOEFL exams on campus. Rio also offers the SAT and ACT tests regularly throughout the year.

Outside the Classroom
In a 24/7 learning environment the classroom is just the beginning. Much of your learning at a boarding school takes place outside the classroom. Immerse yourself in the numerous social activities; join a campus club, sports team, or community service project; travel with a touring organization or on Rio-sponsored trips. If you do, you will thrive during your years at Rio, gain new friends, and have unforgettable experiences. The more you get involved, the more exciting and worthwhile your Rio experience will be.

In the Dorms
This is it. Your transition from living at home to finding your place in the world. Your time in the dorm will help you explore and embrace your emerging independence while creating memories and building life-long freindships. The dormitory deans provide a safe, homelike environment, create a family feeling, and allow for relaxing and recreational times together. Each dorm has Resident Assistants who help the deans in creating a meaningful and successful dorm life experience for you. You may wish to participate in the special dorm club activities that are planned throughout the school year. The dorms have lounge and recreation rooms for watching TV, playing games, studying, or just relaxing with friends. Through dorm life, you will learn accountability, independence and proper time management through the hundreds of daily decisions you make that impact your life in a positive way.

Work to Learn and Learn to Work
At Rio you will work to learn and learn to work. To help with tuition costs, students work between 8 to 12 hours per week in a variety of on-campus jobs. If you qualify to participate in the work program, you will be assigned a job with a work supervisor. You will learn the importance of regular attendance, how to follow directions and stay on task, and the value of taking the initiative to begin a task without being told to do so. In planning your work program, the Rio Labor Coordinator will determine the number of hours you need in accordance with your families financial arrangments, your class schedule, and interests.

Off-Campus Trips
Off campus adventures are exciting and enriching chances to explore life outside the Rio community. Classes often take field trips, highlighted by the biology class 3-day excursion to a biological field station on the Pacific Coast. On Saturdays the school plans optional Sabbath excursions, such as a trip to the beach or a nearby old-growth redwood grove. Music organizations also provide you the chance to travel, ranging from day trips to local area churches to a major spring tour. If you are on a varsity sports team, you will play off-campus league games in the local area and participate in tournaments requiring overnight travel. Clubs and class organizations provide another option for going off-campus.

Connect with the Community
You’ll find that some of your most satisfying and exciting moments at Rio will be the times you serve rather than play, give rather than take. You will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of local outreach projects including Open Table, an ongoing homeless ministry in Santa Rosa; regular visits to a local nursing home; help at the local animal shelter; assistance with community events, such as river, beach, and stream cleanup days; and many others. Most students log much more than the required 25 hours per year of community service required for graduation.

Connect with God
Attending Rio is literally your passport to a greater understanding of other cultures and a broader, more tolerant and compassionate attitude toward world issues.
Rio gives you the opportunity to discover the benefits of a personal relationship with God. Rio’s pastoral staff and student leaders work to develop spiritual growth opportunities that are Christcentered, youth-focused, and often youth directed.
Rio students have changed lives by participating in mission trips, such as building churches in Mozambique, Mexico, and India; assisting in medical and dental clinics in Peruvian villages along the Amazon and mountain villages in Thailand; and building playgrounds for orphanages in Albania and India. On a mission trip, you go to help others but come back realizing that you are the one who has received the greatest blessing. You’ll have a chance to experience the larger world community through a number of Rio-sponsored trips. History and art history take on greater meaning when you participate in the European study tour.
Rio teachers present a view of a compassionate, involved God as revealed in the Bible who loves you and offers you happiness and purpose in life. The dormitories provide additional opportunities for spiritual growth with daily worships and optional small-group Bible studies and prayer sessions. At Rio, you can experience a religious faith that is relevant and real. Love for Jesus unites students and staff, resulting in a caring, accepting, and nurturing campus environment. A commitment of service to others will inspire you to develop your talents and use those talents to reach out and serve the local and world community, both now and for the rest of your life.

Leadership is both a gift and a responsibility. If you take advantage of the many opportunities at Rio, you will graduate a changed person. In the classroom you will have been prepped for success in the next level of education relevant to your career and personal goals. You will have been challenged to think for yourself and exposed to new ways to express your creativity, developing problem solving skills that will grow throughout your life. In life, you will grow more tolerant and open-minded after working, playing, growing and worshiping with individuals from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. You will have developed a life-long support system of friends, including both fellow students and Rio faculty and staff. You won’t feel alone in the world, because you are not. Your spiritual life will be nourished through learning more about a loving God and by making Him central to your life. This God cares about you and wants you to share His love with others.
