Dear Rio family,

Students returned to campus in April, 2021 after a year of distance learning.

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” 2 Cor. 4:8-9

It has been a while since we’ve published our Rio Report magazine. We have had a turbulent ride over the past few years with the Kincade fire reaching close to campus, staffing changes, and all of the recent impacts of COVID-19.

During our winter board meeting last year, I felt such a sense of defeat because of all of the trials that seemed to come our way. I described to our board members the number of families who pulled their students out of Rio to pursue a home or public school option when high schools in California weren’t allowed to open for in-person instruction. Our teachers could no longer teach students face to face, and we were faced with weighty budgetary decisions.

I described to the team the parable of the sower; the great Farmer who scattered seeds across the muddied landscape. I told them how I felt that we were neck deep in manure at that moment, with no end in sight to these challenges facing our school. The hope, I described, was that every good gardener knows that tomatoes grow better in a nice mix of manure-laden soil, and that my trust is in God who is holding us in His hands and is using this time as a time of growth through adversity.

I am proud to say that a year later, I believe we’re on the cusp of reaping this proverbial crop. Our enrollment is on the upward trend and we have had some unexpected financial generosity come our way. More than that, COVID-19 forced us as a staff, board, and conference to come together as a team and reconcile our past with where we would like to be in the future. I have seen alumni come forward to support us, our board commit like never before, and our conference leadership come to campus with willing hearts to cultivate those seeds and lead Rio into a new morning, until we are ready for the Great Harvest.

I want to tell you that I appreciate every one of your notes of encouragement, gifts of financial support for our school and students, and stories that you have shared with me about your time at Rio. Your influence and life experiences only make us better as we move forward, as you are the evidence of a Rio success story.

My hope for you is that you also have found a deep resilience inside yourself as no doubt you have faced defeat, loss of loved ones, or financial challenges. I pray that you have come to find trust and rest in the One who planted you here on this earth; that your story would continue to touch countless others because of your testimony.

For some encouragement in your walk down the road of resilience in this issue, I invite you to read Marissa (Hilligoss) Johanson’s (‘86) story and my interview with Dr. David Metzler (‘69), who researched one of the most resilient authors in the Bible in his devotional about the life of Paul.

What a joy and honor it is to be joining the excellent team of teachers, staff, and community here at Rio Lindo Adventist Academy this year. We are excited about this school year and getting back to some “normalcy” with our students and the programming that has made Rio Lindo such a special place for 60 years! We wholeheartedly believe that Adventist education in the 21st century has the potential to train, develop and unleash leaders for the Kingdom of God. Our vision is that students would live interactively with Jesus throughout their time at RLAA and there would be a tangible difference in a student’s academic, social, emotional and spiritual growth.

Finally, the context of discipleship in a community setting is always service to others. Earlier this school year I had the opportunity to join a group of our students on a community service project at our sister school, Redwood Adventist Academy. What a privilege it was to work alongside and see our young people get excited, roll up their sleeves, and get to work to improve their campus in a meaningful way.

I’m always reminded of Jesus’ example of sacrificial love that we model, teach and provide opportunities for our students to serve both locally and abroad.

New Athletic Field

In winter 2020, Rio’s athletic department broke ground on the new athletic field.

The field is home to sports year round and over time decayed with gopher holes, yellow jacket nests, and divets from use over time. The field was extended, raised up, and turf was

News Updates COVID-19 transformed the way all schools functioned.

During the summer after COVID, Rio began losing students. The enrollment slid as more families elected to pursue home school or public school programs. When the school year started, Rio’s enrollment hovered just under 100 students.

Teachers threw themselves into learning new tools, recording software, and making the best out of this situation. They were determined to continue the Rio sense of family through supporting students. The Student Association created care packages and mail was sent around the world.

Over time, students returned to the dorms in small numbers to get additional academic and emotional support. By April 2021, most students returned to campus.

COVID rules required students to

wear masks and prohibited many activities such as sports and music.

Again, staff worked hard to make the best out of constantly changing guidelines and many students finished out the year with positive memories and close relationships.

This year, Rio is resuming as much normalcy as possible while still maintaining safety to prevent outbreaks across campus. Rio was the first school in Sonoma County to adopt a rapid test screening program and so far has had no cases spread to others.

Rio’s teachers are still coping with learning loss and the mental impact that isolation and fear has had on students. They are encouraged, however, by the resilience of the students and their ability to support one another.

New Coding Class

This year, Rio launched a new coding class for the 2021-2022 school year. There are a total of fourteen students who are learning the fundamentals of Python, a computer programming language used to write code for software.

Python was created with the intention of simplifying complex computer language so any user can learn to read and code. Because of this, Python is easier to read and write which is why it is being used to write programs for major companies including Netflix, Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Google and NASA. Through this class, students gain technology credit and foundational knowledge in the computer science field. The coding class is being held in the library with an instructor on Zoom, who is a senior computer science student at New York University. Students are taught virtually through a website

called Trinkit.io which runs live codes in any browser. Currently the students are learning how to code shapes and simple programs.

“I took this class because I wanted to learn how to use computers and be more familiar with technology.

I’m surprised how much effort I have to put into coding to make simple shapes,” said Jonathan P., a junior.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community survey, the top ten careers currently are in the STEM and computer science fields.

Principal Lepulu’s goal is to prepare Rio’s students for the future and expand students’ knowledge and prepare them for some of the most valuable college degrees. Rio has always offered industrial art classes that teaches students the foundations of engineering and applications of math. Tech classes are a beneficial addition to Rio’s educational program.

installed. The additional space of the field is now able to host two games of flag football simultaneously. Rio’s annual Sports Camp in September 2021 was the first major event to use the field. Sports Camp is a recruitment event that introduces Northern California 5-8th graders to Rio’s student coaches and athletic teams. Over 155 students attended this year after last year’s cancellation.

Rio then hosted its Football Weekend Oct. 15-17 and had seven schools compete. With the flat surface and plush grass, there were fewer injuries and more satisfied athletes.

his was an alumni weekend we will never forget. After canceling last year’s alumni reunion, we knew we had to have some sort of solution for alumni to come together and be honored. The tricky part of planning any event during a pandemic is weighing out all of the various factors that make an event possible. In the end, we relied on guidance from our local county about group gathering limitations and for the health of our students and alumni, we opted to hold Alumni Weekend online with a Youtube church service streamed live for comments and Zoom class meetings throughout the afternoon.

Many alumni across the decades came together through video to make our church service happen. The program had music provided by the 1972 orchestra, messages of hope and peace from Steve Daily, ‘71, Berit (Christensen) von Pohle, ‘75, and Ron Mellor, ‘71.

Another beautiful special music was written by Andi (Tucker Brown) Galusha, ‘95 together with Jeff Long, ‘94 who collaborated over Facebook to write a song that reminds fellow alumni to rely on God as a forever “safe space” in uncertain times. Paul Mahlon Tu-ivai, ‘86 gave our offering appeal and shared how he was supported financially to attend Rio, when he never thought it could be a reality.

Recent alumni, Tiffani Jackson, who is studying theology at Oakwood, conducted our community prayer time and Gerri Smith, ‘76 closed our service with “The Lord’s Prayer” performed in American Sign Language.

Starting at 2:30 on Sabbath afternoon, Rio staff members opened up Zoom meeting rooms for members of the honor classes. Alumni streamed in from all over the world and shared their updates, memories, inside jokes, and in some cases, tears. It was incredibly moving for everyone who participated.

“I loved having the Zoom breakout rooms in the afternoon and into the evening. It afforded the opportunity to interact with more classmates on a personal basis than at past reunions. Thus I left more satisfied without the disappointment of missing out on engaging with quite a few classmates as I had in the past when we spent so much time listening to one speaker/entertainer from a ‘platform.’ Thanks to all of you who did so much to make our reunion a success! I started to list you all here but I would probably be amiss at including you all. We know who most of you are. THANK YOU!!!” said Teri Manzano, Class of ‘71.

JOYLEEN MABIKA, ‘16 Public Health Officer | Oregon

Joyleen joined Oregon’s Pandemic Response Team as a Case Investigator and worked with patients who either tested positive for COVID-19 or had been exposed. She connected people with local resources and support and remained flexible to address ongoing challenges to make sure healthcare is equitable and accessible to all communities.

Elizabeth spent her senior year at Rio volunteering at a vaccine clinic with her mom who is an RN. Elizabeth helped check people in, made sure they were on schedule, and helped transport the vaccines to the nurses at the clinic. She is now attending California Baptist University, pursuing a degree in Chemistry and Pre-med.

Miranda was a new graduate nurse at Loma Linda University Medical Center before the pandemic hit. Her skills were immediately put to the test as she cared for COVID patients, supported families, and witnessed countless good byes over an iPad. Miranda’s faith carried her through her grief and she relied on God to give her strength in the toughest of days.

Kim has been conducting COVID tests since March 2020 and now assists with administering vaccinations to members of her local community.

TINO MKOROMBINDO, ‘13 MD/MBA Student | Louisville, KY

NANCY (HELM) WILHELM WEEKS, ‘76 Registered Nurse | Simi Valley, CA

Tino volunteered in Louisville where the pandemic had disproportionately impacted his community. He helped administer the vaccine when it was first released and his team helped more than 1000 people register for their first dose. Tino is the founder and president of Greater Influence, which seeks to increase representation in healthcare by improving access to resources and increase early interest in medicine and medical school for students of color. Nancy helped set up her hospital’s COVID Convalescent Plasma program and arranged for recovered COVID patients to donate plasma which was then given to the sickest patients in an attempt to transfer the antibodies from the recovered patient to critically ill patients.

DON LARSEN, ‘77 RN-Information Technology

Don worked as an RN for the Sutter Health information technology department. His department worked with electronic health records to address the COVID surge’s rising demand for additional ICU beds.

His team also created systems to organize massive vaccination efforts and made video visits more accessible to patients. Most of these systems were created with his team from their home offices as they worked remotely.

Cheryl works in public health and conducted COVID tests before moving on to COVID case tracing and vaccinations.

EILEEN BENSON, ‘73 Nurse Practitioner | Maryland

DR. LORRAINE WILLIAMS-TEDOR, ‘76

Eileen worked in a retirement community when the pandemic started. While desperately trying to figure out ongoing challenges to keep her patients safe when PPE was minimal, her team used creative things like sheet protectors for face shields and plastic bags for gowns. She watched COVID spread like wildfire and every sniffle or cough was suspect. After retiring in April 2020, she now volunteers in vaccination clinics several times a week.

MD-Volunteer | Texas

Dr. Williams-Tedor volunteered with the Medical Reserve Corps on behalf of the State of Texas Disaster Relief. She worked alongside other doctors, nurses, ETs, and pharmacists either administering vaccines or drawing vaccine vials. Much of her work was done in the Alamodome in the parking lots while patrons remained in their vehicles. Her knowledge of Spanish helped her connect with many patients who had questions about their health.

DAN FERGUSON, ‘73 Director of the WA Allied Health Center of Excellence

Dan works in Washington and serves multiple roles mostly in supporting changes in health workforce education but also with supporting local and regional public health strategies and Behavioral Health initiatives to address the impact of the pandemic.

MONICA AMOROSO ’72 Registered Nurse | Montana

Monica worked in several different Native American clinics on the reservations during the last 2 years.

As a “Covid nurse”, she tested patients and addressed symptoms.

She taught patients about health, while maintaining awareness of cultural traditions and how they fit into lifestyle modifications due to the virus.

AST YEAR WAS the most financially difficult year for Rio, maybe ever. When our enrollment tumbled

downward after COVID prevented California high schools from meeting in-person, we saw our budget take a major hit. Tough cuts, both to staffing and our budget, were made and we rallied our staff, board, and community to come together to begin planning for a stable future for our school; with the faith that we would make it through.

And we did. At the start of 2021 school year, our enrollment began to climb back up again, and we celebrated the support that we received from donors and encouraging family like you. Together in total, we raised more than $150,000 to support student scholarships, learning projects, and the area that we needed funding most; unrestricted funding to make it through 2020. “Thank you” is not enough for your generosity and unwavering belief in our school and our students. Let’s keep going so we can continue to make this place the best that it can be. We have several upcoming projects that we’d like to share with you.

RIO’S TOP 3 NEEDS 1. Science Laboratory We have already started cleaning out our old science laboratory, which has experienced much wear and tear in the past 60 years. Our new modern lab will feature five large student work stations, a new ventilation system, state of the art LED lighting, epoxy flooring, bright walls, integrated technology and safety upgrades to facilitate learning for our biology, chemistry, physical science, physics, and anatomy and physiology students.

We already have an anonymous donor who is committed to match gifts up to $50,000 total. This means we need all of our alumni, parents, and community to come together to support this project.

We are also extending naming rights for the science lab to a donation surpassing $50,000.

3. Dorm Room Renovations Rio’s dorms were built in 1962 and as you know, teenagers really know how to give dorm rooms that “lived in” feel. Our dorm rooms are very similar to when you attended Rio and are in dire need of an upgrade. This long-term project will fund the renovation of multiple dorm rooms at a time. The renovation will include fresh paint, carpet, sturdy window treatments, and an updated closet and sink area. The hope is that our dorms would be comfortable, modern, and clean for many years to come.

This construction project will begin Spring of 2022 and continue for several years until Mail gifts to: all rooms are renovated.

How Students Learn From one teacher’s perspective

Teachers in all grades are observing varying levels of learning loss in students after an entire year of instruction online. At Rio, new students who attended a public school the previous year have demonstrated that their knowledge is not at grade level. A record four new students are repeating a grade this year after not receiving credit for last year’s high school classes.

a new perspective from my students that I haven’t seen before.

When I assigned the first unit reflection, the comments by and large exhibited a more determined tone than I have ever seen before in my years of teaching. Students commented, “I know I can do better and I want to try harder this unit”, “I’m enjoying reading so much more now”, and “I am going to spend more time preparing for class”.

One surprising aspect of learning in a COVID world is demonstrated by Rio’s freshman class. This class of 25 students has overwhelmingly taken ownership of their learning and turned their challenges into resilience as they find intrinsic motivation that we haven’t seen before in a freshman class. The freshman class also has a record high number of students who had previously attended an Adventist school with 22 out of 25 coming from Adventist education, versus about half of all other new students who have previously attended a public school.

Two characteristics of this point of view jumped out at me.

Number one: their comments were “I” focused. They took ownership of their efforts and acknowledged what they each individually had put into their unit. If they had not done as well as they could have, they owned their mistakes. Which leads us to number two. These comments exhibited a growth mind-set. The growth mind-set is an indicator of success because it demonstrates the person is looking at obstacles as opportunities. It is a brave resilience that shows their ability to grow in the face of struggle.

English teacher Nick Sigler explains.

“At the end of most units, I have my students complete a reflection survey. This wrap up assists them in taking what they learned about the content, the educational process, and themselves and applying it to future subject matter. My hope is always that they will grow both in their knowledge and gain confidence in themselves as students. The comments usually run the gamut: “I wasn’t interested in this subject”, “Assign less reading”, “I think I did pretty good”. This is all normal teenage perspective on school and studying.

I believe this resilience is a product of all our students have gone through this last year and a half. Our Rio students faced school as they have never known it before; they have been ingenious about how to make their lives work in a quarantined existence; they have had to pivot at a moment’s notice. And yet through all of it, they can still see the possibilities for growth and improvement.

However, this year (and the previous 18 months) has elicited 12

I am hopeful. If a student body can see their own potential, take ownership of their mistakes, and set goals for themselves, then the future of Rio Lindo, our country, and our planet looks like a place we all want to be.”

Resilience Through the Unknown

These past two plus years have brought to the lives of people on our planet more defining moments than could ever have anticipated in our lifetimes. Mine certainly have been, and they have been not only defining, but have distilled within me what outlook is the best, healthiest one I could have. This came sharply into focus the other day as I was chatting on the phone with a friend whom I have not spoken with in a long time. He does not believe as we do, and I was still able to spell out for him a couple important things: 1- I am grateful. 2- I believe I am truly looked after.

I believe he was not offended, and could hear what I was saying. He summed it up in his own way, “You have the Midas touch!” I believe I have God’s touch too. Allow me to illustrate: In the spring of 2019, a few short months after taking a new job, I was unwittingly exposed to a TB positive patient. I discovered in November of that year, that I was positive for TB. After some back and forth with the compensation insurance company and the entrance of SARS-CoV-2 into our existence, I was placed on a course of TB prevention medication. I stayed on it for 4 months of the year 2020. I did not feel spectacular. I was tired. My stomach was constantly upset. I lost weight. But I refused to allow any of this to keep me from working. I was so thrilled when I came off the medication in August of 2020 and began to feel better.

Then on September 28, 2020 another setback occurred.

I had a stroke. I could not believe it. It is still hard to believe sometimes. Thankfully a few things went right: 1- I wasn’t in the middle of a patient transport. (I work as an air ambulance/HEMS RN). 2- I was at work, and my partner sprang into swift action on the realization I was in trouble.

She rushed me to the local ED and I received thrombolytic medication within an hour. 3- The overall clot burden was low, despite its widespread distribution as a multi-embolic, multi-focal event. 4- My flight partner became my flight nurse, and she and a medic friend flew me to the ICU at CPMC in San Francisco, CA. It was there that a piece of the puzzle was discovered. I had a patent foramen ovale (PFO).

It is an additional opening between the atria of the heart, and normally it is closed, but mine is not. It was not the cause, but was a contributor to the stroke.

In retrospect, looking back at all this, I have learned much. I do not have to be in control for things to still work out right. For so much of the past two years I have not been!

Yet I am still looked after and loved. Both by God whose love is un-ending, and by my family; a family who really could not be better. These things fill my heart with gratitude.

I still have work to do with regard to my PFO, but there is no grand hurry. I have had it my entire life. I live taking aspirin every day in order to prevent any undue stickiness in my blood, and prevent clots. I know that this too will be cared

for the way it should be.

Through all this my remarkable family has gone on to do great things of their own: Kendra (‘14) has graduated from Pharmacy School, passed her PharmD boards and is a fully licensed Pharmacist currently in residency in San Antonio TX. Hailey (‘17) has graduated with honors from the Honors track program at PUC with a degrees in Communication/ Marketing and a minor in English. She is currently eyeing other post graduate ideas….more to come there. And all this during a pandemic! I could not be more impressed by my children. Shaun has taken over the family Dental office (also with its special pandemic related issues) and keeps very busy. Me: I am once again back in the air, taking people from where they are to where they need to be.

God has been gracious to us, and I am daily so grateful. I am not angry these things have happened to me or us. Life happens. Sometimes in stereo and full technicolor. We cannot stop bad things sometimes. We just choose how we respond. Choose love my friends.

Choose to seek the best and ALWAYS pray about it.

Resilient Faith Instilling a framework of faith in teens to weather life’s storms.

In August of 2020 when Pastor Jesse Malin stepped out in faith and accepted a call to Rio Lindo Adventist Academy as Bible teacher and pastor, he knew the position would come with many challenges. At that time, he had no idea what the extent of those challenges would be but also how rewarding the 24/7 involvement in a boarding school can be. During the year and a quarter Pastor Jesse has been Rio’s spiritual leader, he has done an amazing job building a student-based spiritual program and has already had a positive impact on both the academy students and adult church members.

According to Principal Mekey Lepulu, “I’ve appreciated Pastor Jesse’s leadership and ministry on our campus as he works with our students helping them to develop or deepen their relationship with their heavenly Father. What a blessing and absolute privilege it is to see our young people get excited about spiritual life on our campus; God is good!”

Pastor Jesse or “PJ”, as students fondly call him, has three primary goals as he guides Rio’s spiritual program: “to provide opportunities for all Rio students to start or deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, provide opportunities for students to plan and lead spiritual programming, and ultimately equip students with the tools they need to grow in Christ throughout their lives.”

Meeting his goals for Rio was particularly difficult last school year since COVID necessitated distance learning, but Pastor Jesse demonstrated his resilience as he worked tirelessly to establish personal relationships with students and stay optimistic as he learned a new job under the constraints of distance learning.

This year he has been able to implement his full program. One of 14

Pastor Jesse’s major changes has been choosing an all-encompassing theme for the year that guides the whole spiritual program, not just Sabbath sermons. In accordance with his leadership philosophy, Pastor Jesse worked with Student Association leaders during August’s pre-session to pick this year’s theme—Revive and Thrive, which was inspired by John 10:10: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.”

As he further explains, his purpose as he has planned and implemented the spiritual activities this year is to show students how Christ wants to bring us new life and to sustain us with more and more opportunities to flourish. Topics so far this year for small group discussion, interactive games, sermons, and even outreach activities related to the theme include discipleship, forgiveness, dealing with conflict, and finding Sabbath rest.

Throughout this process, students have been actively involved.

Pastor Jesse comments that working with the student-led Campus Ministries team is a highlight of his week and that “Rio has over a dozen students actively involved in planning and leading out in spiritual events on campus every week.”

Student leaders are involved in planning worship services, presenting devotional talks for Friday chapels, leading small group discussions, and organizing a variety of events, such as the current prayer wall set up in the Ad Building lobby.

Even for the two special weeks of prayer with guest speakers, class and Student Association officers plan and lead out in the overall program. The third Week of Prayer is entirely student-led, with students speaking for the chapels throughout the week as well as for

Pastor Jesse says, “I like to see the great courage students exhibit when they are willing to stand up and share what God is doing in their lives. Helping students gain confidence in the power of God to work in them and through them is a truly inspiring experience.”

Incorporating student leaders into all aspects of the spiritual program makes spirituality more appealing to teenagers.

According to Jareth Dunbar, a non-Adventist Rio senior, “The spiritual activities are fun to participate in while being educational. They’re accessible to those who don’t identify as Adventist. Rio has helped me by changing my previous views of Christianity and the Bible.”

Diego Batin, a senior, explains that through planned events like the prayer wall, “I’ve seen myself grow spiritually; I’ve noticed that I pray more often, and also I’ve gotten the chance to do devotions.”

Senior Shekinah Valce explains that Rio’s beautiful and serene natural setting also contributes to spiritual growth. “Rio has definitely helped me grow closer to Jesus seeing as how I always find time to be alone, so I always find time to find peace in God.” Another important aspect of Rio’s spiritual program is teaching students the joy of service through community outreach, with activities ranging from students helping in local food banks to scheduled community service days throughout the year. Serving others helps root students in their faith and helps develop gratitude and empathy for others.

Victor Cullen, senior, explains that he enjoys Rio’s spiritual program because everything feels connected—the lessons, the people, activities.

He explains, “Rio has helped me solidify my beliefs and feel more comfortable sharing Pastor and Chaplain Jesse Malin them.”

In a time of unpredictability, economic downturn, and civil unrest, what are we as Christians called to do? In his recently released 365-day devotional entitled “A World on Fire,” Captain David Metzler, D.D.S., ‘69, dives deep into the life of the apostle Paul and draws parallels to the foundation of Christianity and today.

Throughout this biography, Dr. Metzler follows Paul from his childhood, through his life-changing moment when he came face to face with God and was blinded, to how he called out newly established Christian churches who were fighting with each other. The book follows the story of the first church and the heart-changing impact of salvation through Jesus in Paul’s life and the lives of countless others who were lit on spiritual fire through the Holy Spirit.

Metzler observed Paul as a specifically chosen apostle of Jesus who was called to spread Christianity to the globe after trying to extinguish it. Metzler also drew parallels to today’s current political climate, economic downturn, and tribal mentality of people turning against each other. The title “World on Fire” has a double meaning; the Holy Spirit’s anointing through tongues of fire spreading good news, but also speaks to the relentless chaos of the world.

Metzler’s advice to young people and alumni alike is to put focus on their relationships with Jesus and focus on Him completely. As he has seen God’s leading in his life, he has seen Ellen White’s words ring true: “When you look back you wouldn’t want to choose any other way than the way He’s led you.”

After a successful and fulfilling 28-year career in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, Captain David Metzler and his wife Margy retired in 2012 to Fort Myers, Florida. Dr. Metzler still enjoys researching biblical customs and historical events. Dr. David Metzler attended Rio Lindo Adventist Academy as a two-year student (class of 1969) and grew up in Ukiah, CA.

NEWS NOTES [1960-1969] ‘63 ED DOWER It has been a couple of years since I’ve given an update. So here it goes.

I sold my business in 2018 and Donna (Piner also ‘63) and I moved to Las Vegas where our daughter lives. We are enjoying the beauty of the great American Southwest. We are well and avoiding Covid so far.

‘65 STEVE MILLER, ‘66 REBECCA RUPRACHT Steve Miller and Rebecca (Becky Rupracht) were married on October 15, 2021.

I jokingly tell everyone that we had to move away so we could retire. There is some truth to that.

We have our 1st great grandson who turned a year old in September. His mama and daddy are both in the military and are stationed in Virginia. We don’t get to see him as much as we would like.

Judie Wagonleitner Squires who sadly passed away a few years ago from colon cancer hidden by her appendix.

Would love visits here at New Smyrna Beach by Rio classmates. We are near Daytona Beach. Live just 3 blocks to a great surfing beach. Disney is a little more than an hour’s drive. Retirement is good.

‘65 JOHN HEWITT After 45 years in the medical profession as University teaching and EMS supervising I retired to my second career as a professional artist. For many years I taught for PUC art department at Albion Field Station summer session, first with Vernon Nye and then I took over in 2000.

I have been featured in national art magazines twice this year. I was inducted into the Watercolor Honor Society recently also, a great honor.

With my friend Leland Yialelis (also Rio Alumnus) I do art tours of Greece.

I recently completed book soon to be published about raising a gosling. We have conversations about being a goose versus human. The pandemic put us together accidentally with life altering consequences. Follow me on facebook or johnhewittart.com.

‘69 BRENDA MUTH It has been almost 3 years since we lost our home during the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA. I am happy to say that we are back in a new house on our lot in Paradise, as of July 15, 2021. It has been a life-changing experience, but God has blessed us and we are thankful for his leading. We are excited to have 5 grandchildren, 2 girls and 3 boys, ranging in ages from 2-14. Unfortunately, they all live in Washington! I am currently working part-time at Paradise Adventist Elementary, doing their Registrar work and some Aid work in Gr. K-2 and 3-6.

At last I have returned to the Northern California I love after spending 24 years in the foreign land of Southern Cal. Yes, with a smile I say that, as all experiences, positive and negative, make us who we are. I am very thankful for the life I have been given by God. I was recruited by the USAF to work as an embedded licensed behavioral health provider. I never imagined this would be part of my rich heritage of professional experience, but it is one of the most interesting, complex, rewarding careers of my life. I am much closer to family after way too long being distant. I think of my four years (YIKES!) at Rio with (mostly) fondness, and celebrate some of the enduring connections I maintain from that time.

‘77 BEV KRAMER It’s been a busy summer with our daughter graduating from Southern Adventist University with her BSN in May, our son graduating from HS at Upper Columbia Academy in June, our daughter getting married in the Chattanooga area in August, where she and her new hubby are settling, then getting our son ready for his first year at my alma mater, Walla Walla University in September. I’m working as an RN, performing utilization review for OB, Peds and NICU patients at Adventist Health hospitals up and down the west coast. I’m blessed to be able to work entirely from home. My husband works for Adventist Health Portland, in the clinical dietary department. We’re looking forward to Christ’s soon return, and in troubling world events, see signs that it’s closer than we may think.

NEWS NOTES ‘96 STEPHANIE FRITZ-TA My family moved from Washington state, where we had lived for 12 1/2 years, to Paradise, CA in October 2018. The Camp Fire devastated the town 3 1/2 weeks after we arrived, and our home was burned in the fire. We eventually settled in Clovis, CA in June 2019 and are still living here. We are loving our new community, and hope to travel more and visit family and friends more often in the future.

[2000-2009] ‘02 FAITH (PATRICIO) COCHRAN July 29 I was giving my last patient report after working the night shift when a terrible headache hit me. I had an aneurysm rupture in my right middle cerebral artery causing a subarachnoid hemorrhage (I think I got that right). Thank the Lord I was working at the hospital! I ended up being flown to UC Davis where I received OUTSTANDING care and was able to come home 18 days later. Living at, and having my family be a part of the Rio community has been such a blessing, and I’m so thankful for the faculty and families up at Rio who helped my parents take care of my kiddos when Neal and I couldn’t, including throwing a birthday party and getting them ready for school.

I’m doing so well now and my family and I are so grateful to all of you for your support and prayers. Thank you!

‘16 MATTHEW SALVINI I am in the Army. I live in Colorado Springs on Fort Carson. My job is 11c indirect fire infantryman which is a mortar man. I have made many friends here which I call my brothers. I do miss my family. But I am doing well on my own. I can thank Rio for preparing me to be away from home. All in all I love what I do and can’t wait to come and visit when I get a chance too. ‘06 BRIANA TOELKE ‘96 TINA MARIE (GRIMSTAD) HACKNER I moved to Germany in 2006. I live here with my husband Stefan, 9 year old daughter Lauren and our pompon Copito.

I own my own day spa and my husband owns a Bakery. We enjoy traveling to Ibiza (photo) in the summer months and spend winter skiing in Kitzbühel.

This fall I joined Walla Walla Valley Academy as a math and science teacher.

In the next few years I’m hoping to earn a Physics teaching endorsement and a M.S. in Mathematics while settling into a long career here at WWVA. Oh, and somehow balancing family life and outdoor pursuits with all of that!

KENNON MARTIN, ‘63… SEPTEMBER 11, 2021 Ken was a great friend and a loyal Rio Board member. He will be greatly missed, and just one more great reason to look forward to resurrection morning. -Ed Dower, ‘63 Dr. Kennon Martin served on Rio’s school board for nearly twenty years. STANLEY GRISWOLD- APRIL 17, 2019 Mr. Griswold began working at Rio as Assistant Dean in the 1968/69 school year and then taught at Rio until 1986/87. During his time at Rio he taught all subjects including Bible, English, History, Biology, and Math. The 1980 Yearbook was dedicated to the Griswolds in appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the students of Rio. Mr. Griswold passed away at his home in Wellsville, Utah, surrounded by his loving family.

GERALD HETZER-APRIL 30, 2020 Mr. Hetzer passed away at 94 years old in Sebastopol, CA. Mr. Hetzer was an original staff member at Rio and served as the Industrial Arts and Driver’s Education Teacher from 1962/63 1969/70. Mr. Hetzer sponsored Rio’s diving club and taught many students the fundamentals of industrial arts after returning to Rio to teach from 1976/77-1979/80.

HARLEN IRVIN MILLER-DECEMBER 18, 2020 He was born September 11, 1948 in Santurce, Puerto Rico and was a son of Harvey Miller (spouse, Frances) of Provo, UT and the late Helen Edwards Miller.

Mr. Miller was a music teacher in various Seventh Day Adventist high schools including Napa Christian School, Rio Lindo Adventist Academy, Shenandoah Valley Adventist Academy. Harlen Miller was a music and voice teacher at Rio from 1988/89-1995/96 and sparked the love of music into countless students during his time at Rio. HELEN WILHELM-FEBRUARY 14, 2021 Helen Phyllis (nee Lund) Willhelm was born August 15, 1934 in Great Falls, Montana. Mrs. Wilhelm taught at Lodi Academy, Rio Lindo Adventist Academy, and Columbia Union College. As an original staff member at Rio, Mrs. Wilhelm taught business education and typing class. Her husband Glenn was the accountant. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Glenn Willhelm, daughters Carol Willhelm and Lisa Willhelm Cooney, son-in-law Patrick, and grandchildren Sean and Clare. Helen deeply loved the Lord, her family, and her many students and friends.

SANDY PRIDE-APRIL 19, 2021 Mrs. Sandra Pride passed away after a long battle with pancreatic cancer on April 19, 2021 in her home on Rio’s campus. She served as girls dean at Rio from 1981-2001 and has volunteered on campus delivering love, support and many cookies to the students in the dorm since then. “Mama Pride”, as she was known, was a beloved member of the staff, and loved her girls and all the Rio community fiercely. As a lifelong dean at Oak Park Academy (Iowa), Laurelwood Academy (Oregon) and at Rio, Mom Pride poured out her heart to her girls and maintained contact with many of them after they graduated. Mrs. Pride is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Debbie Pride and daughter and son-inlaw, Debbie Pride-Young and Gary Young. www.RioLindo.org
