COSMO BAE LEE MIN HO Tell us about your new album, Always.

I keep making albums because I feel like there’s always something new to express. Not necessarily big or ambitious topics, but as I grow, I want to continue to share my life with my fans, who have been so loyal over the years. Releasing new music is a great way to communicate with them.

That’s why this album is called Always—we’re always, always in this together.

Your fans are also very supportive of your fundraising platform, Promiz, the proceeds of which go toward various groups such as the UNICEF and Food Bank. Founded in 2014, it won the Korea Good Brand Awards last year— congratulations!

I’m thankful that my fans have been there from the very beginning of Promiz. It was born out of a desire to help those who are socially marginalized or are in a difficult situation. The more you encounter societal issues, the more you want to help in any way that you can. More than giving donations in cash or in kind at one-off events, we want Promiz to be a sustainable way of sharing our resources with those in need.

Since my character, Heo Joon Jae, changes the way he acts depending on whom he’s with, it’s safe to say that he is a collection of characters.

As an actor, I found it to be an interesting and fulfilling role.

There’s a playfulness but also a seriousness to his character, and it was fun to juggle both.

Sacrifice is a running theme in the love story that spans generations. If you were in a situation where you had to make a sacrifice for someone you love, what would you do?

The Legend of the Blue Sea is fictional, but it’s rooted in reality in the way that love, in all its forms, requires communication, compromise, and yes, sacrifice in some ways.

You’ll do anything to protect your loved ones. Given the situation, I think my character made the best choice.

Describe your ideal love.

For me, the ideal kind of love provides a sense of security and creates a positive environment. A relationship is a give-and-take exchange that creates a safe space for two people to make mistakes and learn from them, and grow together and as individuals.

As an actor, how do you immerse yourself in a story, and how do you separate the real from the reel?

Well, you just have to take a deep breath then jump right in. Living the character’s life helps you get the hang of it, but there’s always going to be an adjustment period. I try to find a common ground with the character by focusing on his emotions. I’m constantly trying to improve as an actor.

You’re an actor, singer, global ambassador, and philanthropist. What would you like to be remembered as?

I’d like to be remembered simply as a human being who always gave his best and tried to make a difference in the lives of other people. I’m happy with where I am today, and I hope to share that feeling with everyone.

If you had the ability to change one thing in the world, what would it be?

To have everyone speak the same language. That would be amazing.

“My 7-year-old cousin was sitting on my lap as I told him a bedtime story. We were in the bottom bunk of a double-deck bed, so there wasn’t much headroom. I accidentally sat up too quickly, and my cousin’s head hit one of the metal bars.

He got a bump on his head the size of a ping-pong ball and hasn’t spoken to me since. I’m the worst babysitter ever.”

“As the kuya of the group, I was assigned to drive home three of my friends and two of my siblings. Everybody was upset for reasons I can’t recall, and in an effort to keep them all quiet while I was backing out of a parking space, I ended up driving right into a concrete post. It took three months’ salary to get that dent fixed.

“My dad had to be brought to the hospital for a minor injury. Since I was the only one with him, I was tasked to fill out forms while he was being treated. It dawned on me that I didn’t know my own father’s birth year. I had to ask him when he got out...

What happens when an out-of-shape millennial joins an indoor cycling class?

That you, , of not-sosound mind and body, do hereby declare your one-time participation in a spin cla—oh, it’s not a spin class? This is different? And it all makes sense when you step into the cycling studio: the room is pitch black, except for a single candle next to the instructor’s bike. Everybody’s in neon garb, stretching and chattering. Up front, the instructor’s shouting “Hello, ladies!” and “Welcome!” in a tone just a few notches below slightly insufferable. But that’s her job, to pump you up. If anything, you’re wondering if your legs can trudge through without cramping. You mount your bike and take a swig of water, praying to all the gods you can think of.

2. THEE FIRRST 30 MIINUTES are a challenge: While most of the class is keeping up effortlessly, you’re sweating buckets, doing everything to keep yourself from collapsing to the ground. Each instructor’s got their own unique playlist, and yours likes classic rock. Arctic Monkeys at the gym? Heck yeah. After 10 minutes of genuine, honest effort, you take two minutes to catch your breath and take in your surroundings. The girls on either side of you are pushing

themselves to the limit, and the sight of that inspires you to keep going.

3. THEE LASTT 30 MINNUTES, and let’s not mince words here, are the closest to a living hell as you can get. The resistance on your bike is set to max, and your thighs are more jelly than muscle mass at this point. Then, juuuust when you begin to get the hang of things, you’re asked to pick up some weights and work your arms while cycling. You let out a faint whimper. You’re too weak to even protest. You look up at your instructor in this dark, dark room and it’s like she’s been replaced by the Devil himself. Now you know why they call it SoulCycle.

This is a ritual that’s meant to suck the soul right out of your body.

4. AFTTER THHE WORKOUT, you dismount your bike too quickly and nearly lose your balance. For the next few seconds, your legs will be completely useless. But the best part of the session—the post-workout massage—makes every second of that class worth it. Relieved, everybody steps out for some salad and coconut water. “You were really going at it back there,” says one of your classmates. “Maybe we can go to the next class together!” Maybe you will, or maybe you won’t. But hey, that’s one new workout off your bucket list.

“I want to be able to make mistakes and learn from them.”

It is 2003, and an 18-year-old Anne Curtis has just landed her very first Cosmo cover. In it she wears her hair long and stick-straight, her eyebrows arched and thin, her lips a matte nude. A powder blue halter dress clings to the young actress’s body, showing off ample cleavage and a tiny waist.

The cover blurb proudly proclaims, “Anne Curtis grows up.”

And grow up was exactly what she did from that point on, with as much determination and enthusiasm as a teenager could muster, having moved out of her parents’ house and into a condo she wasn’t even sure she could afford to rent on her own.

“That’s when everything got real for me,” she reminisces. “I struggled with small things like doing the groceries, comparing prices of toilet paper, paying my utility bills, not forgetting deadlines. I really did all of that by myself. But it’s okay because I wanted to do it. I wanted to prove that I could. I wanted to do my own thing without having to wait for anyone’s approval.”

Now, 14 years and 9 Cosmo covers later, Anne is wiser and more sure of herself, validated by the constant outpouring of love from her fans and grounded by the two eventful decades she’s spent working in the industry. “I’m still young at heart,” she assures us, as if we needed any convincing—the ever-present playful gleam in her eyes, no matter how exhausted she is from her graveyard shoot shifts for the upcoming action movie Buy Bust, is more than enough proof. “I don’t

let my age define me or take over my spirit, which has always been childlike and free.”

What’s your definition of independence?

Being strong-willed, having faith, and standing up for what you believe in. Independence to me is having the freedom to pursue your passions.

When do you feel the most free?

When I’m not in the limelight. I feel the most like myself when I’m not under scrutiny or judgment, and when I’m with the people I trust and love.

Is it hard to find time to feel like yourself, given that you’re such a big star?

I never let my celebrity rule over me. And sometimes that’s gotten me into trouble, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want that kind of freedom. I want to be able to make mistakes and learn from them.

Do you believe independence and romantic happiness can coexist?

I feel they should. You should never be dependent on anyone—that’s how relationships fail. Because what

happens when you’re too dependent on someone and they leave you? You become a wreck. But if you’re two independent people who have your own lives, it makes you more compatible because you both have something to bring to the table. You have something to share when you come home. And you just get better together.

Any advice on having both independence and a happy relationship?

I think it really starts with having faith in yourself. If you’re an independent woman, you won’t let your insecurities get the best of you, which is the number one source of destruction in a relationship.

When it comes to decision making, how independent are you?

“[A happy relationship] starts with having faith in yourself.”

I usually have to ask people what they think. It takes me forever to decide because I tend to second-guess myself.

Then I’ll make a last-minute decision and stick to it.

I’m more of a gut feel person than a rational one. That’s why it’s hard—it’s always a guessing game. I’ve always been intuitive. It got me to where I am now, which means both good and bad decisions have worked in my favor. Even mistakes can eventually help you make smart decisions, because then you’ll know better.

What’s your biggest adulting milestone to date?

Buying my own house was a major turning point. I was 22 and I wanted it so badly. I told myself I was going to work hard to make it happen. I just worked and worked. I learned to take my career seriously, because there was so much at stake. When I finally did it, it felt so good. Achievement unlocked!

Have you ever traveled on your own?

Yes, twice: in Thailand and Spain.

It was so soothing because I had so much me time. Imagine going a week without talking to anyone, except to check into a hotel. It was so liberating.

It’s your time just for yourself, and you take away so much from that experience. I discovered that I can enjoy my own company. You’ll doubt at first if you’re going to survive, but you get there and realize how much you can trust yourself. Heading out with your map and travel book teaches you to be responsible and mindful of your surroundings. It was such a

challenging, exciting experience. I’d do it again, but of course my constant travel partner now is Erwan (Heussaff).

Congratulations on your engagement! How do you think your career will change once you’re married?

Thank you! I don’t really know, but I’m so against the mentality that just because you’re married, all you’re supposed to do are mom roles. I don’t think that’s true.

Do you feel that women and men should approach independence differently?

Do you rely more on your intuition or on logic?

toward equality. In some countries, people still feel like women shouldn’t be at par with men. But if you’re a strong, driven, independent woman, you don’t have to rely on anyone but yourself. You can have your own career and provide for your family.

Times have changed for women. The marrying age has been pushed back, and women don’t need men to take care of them or to define who they are, which is a great thing.

Do you identify as a feminist?

I believe in the rights of women and that we should be at par with men.

I think women’s voices are being heard increasingly, no matter the industry. People say it’s a trend, but it’s not. Women can speak up now. I believe the gender equality landscape has changed in showbiz, too. Before, when you’re part of a love team, it’s the leading man who stays on. But that’s not the case now. Even if the love team doesn’t last, you can both have separate careers and a bright future.

The thing is, I experienced all those struggles when I was at an age that I was so eager and I wanted to prove that I can survive and be a responsible adult. So when I was 24, I was like, I got this! I was able to relax. It’s good to start being independent at a young age because that’s the point where mistakes are still okay. I think you reach a certain age where, when you make a mistake, people will say, Uy, ang tanda mo na, ha! But when you’re younger, it’s more forgivable and people are more open to guiding you. You’re also more driven to make up for your mistakes.

This is your 9th Cosmo cover! What would you tell the Anne who appeared on her first You’ve been working for 20 years. Cosmo cover?

What’s your most memorable fan “Don’t be encounter so far? such a risk My fans have grown up with me through the years. The most memorable experience was in Cebu in 2014. I was there for a concert, and my dad met Bernadette, one of my fans, at the hotel lobby. She’d traveled all the way from another province, broken shoes and all, but she didn’t have a ticket—all she had was a scrapbook she’d made for me.

She just wanted to see me; it was so heartwarming and touching. We got her a ticket, and I surprised her with a new pair of shoes and sang for her at the concert. Now she’s working in the Middle East and we follow each other on Twitter. It’s incredible how you can inspire someone and make them have faith in themselves. It’s amazing to be able to instill that in people, that they can follow their dreams and make anything happen.

You became independent at such an early age. Do you regret that?

No. I’m glad I learned to be

How much has changed since then?

Not a lot, really. How I was back then is still how I am now—except with lessons learned and a lot more experience in life. A lot of transitioning from different aspects, a lot of turning points.

Being in this industry keeps me youthful and fuels my zest for life.

At the end of the day, no matter what, I’m still a pursuer of dreams.

STAGE 1: THE SHOWER It is a truth universally acknowledged that my skin will never look better than it does first thing in the morning (thanks, retinA!). It’s all downhill after that because I like bathing in water that comes straight from the 7th circle of Hell. Whether I condition or use lotion is a matter of how much I care; on weekdays, I don’t. Sorry, lola, but my legs will be parched by 10AM, because the one body moisturizer that doesn’t leave me feeling like cochinillo is all the way in my bedroom and uuugghhhsofarhassle.

STAGE 2: THE PRIME Hair now wrapped up in the world’s most unflattering turban and in a robe I got for being a bridesmaid, I slather on oil-, fragrance-, and fun-free moisturizer. Down to the neck, because mom says it keeps the wrinkles away. This is followed immediately by sunblock, because of the

aforementioned retin-A and my fear of skin aging and cancer. Primer is only deployed when I know I’ll be out all day. I know, heresy.

STAGE 3: THE BASE Foundation follows, applied all over with the best (read: cleanest) tool I have. I like my base liquid, oil-free, and with none of that “only where you need it” nonsense, because I need it everywhere. Note to self: I really should wash my brushes tonight. Ugh.

STAGE 4: THE EYES There are days when I have the patience to do a lid-crease-highlight deal, and there are days when smudging on eyeliner and loading on a bajillion coats of waterproof mascara is enough. Let’s pretend it’s the former.

STAGE 5: THE BASE (AGAIN) I contour every single day, because I have dumpling-

face. The contour product of choice depends on which makeup bag I’m bringing, which depends on which bag I’m bringing. IT MAKES SENSE, OK. Blush is currently an LE whose eventual demise already makes me weep.

STAGE 6: THE HIGHLIGHT FOR THE GODS I am a highlight junkie. I am unashamed. I’ll use anything that makes my face strategically shiny. Current happiness hack: An eyeshadow called Valley Girl over my cheekbones. The name is everything.

STAGE 7: YOU’RE LATE I check the time and I’m behind schedule. I grab three random lipsticks, throw them in my bag, and hope for the best. Application happens in the car, and it promptly smudges on my coffee cup. Great. But isn’t that the great thing about makeup? That you can just…wipe it off? Also, I forgot to do my brows. Um.

Jamie, 31, a senior brand manager, applies to her profession by “working hard and smart, and building a reputation for being reliable.”

Her rise has not been without the occasional stumble, but she has always picked herself up. “During my early years at work, I was misunderstood by my older, more tenured colleagues because of how I work,” Jamie shares. “I personally talked to them one by one to understand where they’re coming from and tell my side of the story.

Talking about it with no BS has always worked for me.”

An independent woman through and through, Jamie has learned this about herself throughout her career trajectory: “I always try to move and improve.”

MAKING YOUR OWN DREAMS HAPPEN Independence can mean taking an idea and running with it, which is what Yana, 25, a social entrepreneur, did. Armed with a degree in fashion, Yana partnered with an NGO which supports victims of human trafficking and prostitution and launched a brand of upcycled jewelry that creates livelihood for the NGO’s community of disadvantaged women.

“True independence to me is owning who you are and using it to empower other women,” Yana says. “It’s believing in the power of your own story to inspire others to do the same.”

It hasn’t been a walk in the park for Yana, who admits that “it’s difficult

“You just have to focus, work hard, and hustle.” to take the career path ‘less traveled.’” “As a woman, there will always be people who would try to bring me down and doubt the advocacy,” she admits.

But despite the setbacks, Yana is loving what she’s achieved. “I get to be my own #GirlBoss, and at the same time I get to empower women to be proud of who they are and the lives they lead!”

CHOOSING THE PATH YOU WANT— AND STANDING BY THAT CHOICE If you can make difficult life decisions and stand by them, then you’re one tough, independent cookie.

Moriel, 29, was doing

just peachy as a nurse— until she fell in love with makeup. “I realized that I can only live this life once and life’s too short not to do the things that make me feel fully alive,” Moriel recalls.

Now, working with the industry’s best creative talents is just a day in the life for Moriel. But this would’ve remained a fantasy had she succumbed to self-doubt, dwindling finances, and the people who tried to talk her out of her career change. “I surpassed these setbacks by accepting that you cannot please everybody and that there are some people who won’t be there for you through the hard times,” Moriel says.

“You just have to focus, work hard, and hustle.”

DOING THE THINGS THAT SCARE YOU Trying your luck in an entirely new place is scary as hell—that’s why anyone who’s brave enough to do it is independence on legs.

Seneca, 31, a missionary who left for the UK at 23,

moved to Singapore at 25, and settled in South Korea at 28, thinks so.

“Independence means stepping out in faith to do great things and move out of your comfort zone,” she says. “It’s overcoming fears and doubts to pursue things that are beyond you.”

“It was scary at first,” Seneca recalls of her move to the UK, where she didn’t know anyone and took on housekeeping and waitressing jobs to earn extra while studying. But eight years since, she now prides herself in being “a wanderer, a risk-taker, and a truly independent woman.”

“A simple step—applying for a UK visa—was all it took to lead me to where I am now, raising a family in South Korea,” Seneca declares. “And it is not yet over. The world is going to be my daughter’s playground. We will go places, see the world, meet people of different colors, and experience beautiful things that only overcoming my fears can accomplish.”

I AM THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF AN OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKER (OFW) and a chronic gambler. It’s difficult to keep track of the things we’ve lost in the last 10 years—14 cars, four houses, several millions in cash, and the trust of many dear friends and business partners—thanks to my mother’s crippling addiction. I’ve been trying to keep my head above water since I was 12, acting as both mother and father to my two siblings while my dad was working abroad and my mom was an absolute mess. I faced the secondhand wrath of loan sharks as early as 13 and went to visit Mom for three separate jail sentences before I even turned 20. Friends I’ve known for years are astonished to find out this is happening, mostly because I’m good at keeping it under wraps. My life at home is

separate from the life I live outside it.

As minors with no extended family in Manila, my siblings and I had no choice but to suffer at the hands of our mother. That’s why I decided to take charge of my future as soon as I could: just two days after I graduated from college last year, I clocked in at my first job. My dad, finally realizing my mom no longer deserved a second (or 20th) chance, began to entrust the family finances to me. After over

My studio apartment is small, and an air conditioner is too expensive, but I’d rather suffer night sweats than emotional abuse. I’ll be sleeping on a mattress on the floor for a while, but when I think about the fact that I can now leave money and gadgets lying around without worrying I’ll lose them the next day, I almost want to cry with relief. For many of my peers, moving out is an option; for me,

moving out was a necessity.

This is why it’s hard for me to stomach #adulting—the hashtag tends to trivialize the struggles that come with growing up. But despite having no semblance of a real childhood, I’m content with the cards I’ve been dealt. This experience has taught me to be resourceful, futureoriented, and financially responsible. Most importantly, it taught me to go after the life I truly deserve.

Trying to move out is difficult, and at one point, you’ll be tempted to resign yourself to the vicious cycle you’re already used to anyway. But cohabiting with someone with an addiction of any kind is never healthy, and it’s important to put your foot down and say enough is enough. And I’m proud of myself for making that decision.

FACEBOOK RECENTLY took major flak for letting phony news stories slide—but most of your friends’ feeds are probably just as bogus. Bursting with love, job wins, and best-timeever group photos, social media is a happy place. And by happy, we mean really happy—on purpose. Chances are, you too get pulled into this online ruse: “Presenting yourself as upbeat to others is a way of subconsciously elevating your social standing,” says psychologist Randy Paterson, PhD, author of How to Be Miserable: 40 Strategies You Already Use. “It also helps you protect yourself from people who could judge you as a downer.”

The farce is perpetuated IRL as well.

Think: every time someone asks how it’s going and you respond “Great!” when you really want

to lie on the floor in the fetal position.

“When someone admires your buoyant response, you know they’re not admiring your reality,” says Paterson.

“This reinforces the sense that if they knew the real you, they would reject you.” It also encourages you to curate out the bad stuff— breakups, financial woes, bad hair days— leaving behind a lot of insincere smiles.

But self-propelled positivity isn’t always advantageous in a fake-it-till-youmake-it kind of way.

It can actually make you feel worse overall. When you mask or deny feelings of sadness, fear, anger, anxiety, or disappointment, you’re missing out on a behavioral guidance system that could spur action. For example, that feeling in the pit of your

stomach each morning could be a subtle clue that it’s time to change careers; being lonely in a relationship could offer important hints as to what you want from a partner.

To learn from negative emotions, you have to first recognize what you’re feeling, says Kayleigh Pleas, a positive-psychology coach in New York City. “If you can name it, you can tame it,” she says. By breaking the endlessly upbeat cycle, you’re doing everyone a favor. Says Paterson: “It takes courage to say, ‘Actually, things aren’t so great right now.’ Presenting both positive and negative elements shows other people your genuine self—and gives them permission to be human too.”

BREAK OUT OF THE FALSEPOSITIVE TRAP

Or why we never went out during the day. Or why you tiptoed around the word “us.”

The roses you gave me on our first date are brown and brittle now.

I was cleaning my room one day and found them under my bed. “What the hell is that?” asked my sister, not looking up from her laptop. “Office Christmas party,” I lied, as the aftertaste of that first kiss came rushing back. So here’s where I make peace with our prewritten ending. When we see each other again, I hope we’re friendly and familiar. But I also hope enough time has passed that we can embrace and then, in different directions, go on walking.

HOW NOT TO LOSE YOURSELF TO LOVE

You can (and should!) be independent within a relationship. And there are ways to do it without compromising your bond.

“I used to have such a full life before I was part of a couple!” That’s the complaint I hear so often in my practice, and it’s almost always from women, not men. Why? Well, women tend to find it more challenging to maintain their autonomy once they pair up—mostly because we’ve been groomed by society to think about the needs of others first.

That’s especially true when it comes to love. But relationships thrive when both partners give equal attention to me-time as well as together-time. Think about it: Having the freedom to do your own thing as well as spend quality time together 78

prevents you and your S.O. from feeling stifled, which can lead to a split. Plus, solo time enriches your life and makes the moments when you’re in each other’s company way more meaningful. So if you’ve been letting your entire world merge into his, you’d be wise to create some breathing room with these rules.

PLAN SOLO ACTIVITIES When you’re immersed in those first few intoxicating months of a relationship, it’s only natural to find that you have less time for your

usual hobbies. Spending QT with your guy and making him happy makes you happy, so who cares if you’re blowing off a random mani-pedi or spinning class, right?

Wrong. Consistently putting yourself second sets an unhealthy precedent for the relationship and sends a message that your life is based solely on what he wants and on his timeline.

It’s critical to honor your own desires. That means getting those nails done if you feel like it, hopping on a bike and pedaling your butt off, or doing whatever it is you’ve been neglecting.

A Don’t start updating your LinkedIn just yet. “If you’re fantasizing safely in your head, there’s not a thing in the world wrong with that,” says certified dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg, author of Dream On It. “Sex dreams are often about a psychological connection, not a physical one.” Phew!

So it may mean that you want to emulate your boss’s qualities. Or you could just be practicing in your mind: Loewenberg says that sultry reveries often help us explore untapped fantasies… without ever having to leave our beds.

Q Do libidoboosting vitamins really work?

A Nope. The main ingredient in some of these hyped tablets is the hormone DHEA, which your body already makes and converts into the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone, says Lauren Streicher, MD, associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. But more DHEA does not equal horniness, and there’s not a shred of science behind these supplements. “A woman in her 20s or 30s has plenty of DHEA,” explains Dr. Streicher. “Making that tank fuller doesn’t help with sex drive.” Plus, these “vitamins” can be pricey— up to P1,500 a bottle! Save your cash, and get yourself in the mood in other ways, like keeping your stress levels in check, getting enough sleep, and trying out new sex positions that, ahem, give you a healthy dose of his vitamin D (sorry!).

Q This is totally TMI, but I hate the taste of my guy. How can I enjoy oral more?

A “There are two ways to

approach this,” says sexologist Jill McDevitt, PhD. (Options, yay!) First, there’s no rule that says you have to get semen in your mouth when you’re going down on a dude. Next time, switch from using your tongue and lips to your hand when he’s about to orgasm. (And maybe ask him for a little warning.)

Or you could try to change his flavor by asking him to tweak his diet. Emphasis on try, because there’s no hard (hee-hee) research that proves this will make him more palatable—but semen is a type of secretion and, theoretically, those can be altered by spicy foods or sweet fruits, says Alex Shteynshlyuger, MD, a urologist in New York City.

Anything earlier than that, though, won’t affect your workout. In fact, getting busy a few hours before a workout could actually be beneficial. Sex gets your blood pumping and can act as a kind of warm-up that loosens your joints and increases your flexibility.

A When a pocket of air gets trapped in your vaginal canal after switching sex positions (or getting your namaste on in yoga or even just opening your legs too wide), well, it’s gotta come out sometime. If you feel a queef coming on while you’re getting busy, try this trick: “First, say, ‘Hold on a second,’ reach down, put your fingers in your vagina and press down to let the air out,” says Dr. Castellanos. “Because your fingers are in there, the released air won’t make an uncomfortable sound.” Now you two can go back to your regularly scheduled sexing.

There’s a massive trend of using social media—from LinkedIn to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram—and millennials have been brought up with them, say recruitment specialists. This makes you well placed to use them to your advantage, and you need every advantage you can get to land a job in today’s tight economy.

“Social media gives both the candidate and the company an opportunity to learn more about each other, rather than just a CV or an ad,” says Melissa King of South African firm Profile Placements. “You’re able to get a feel of a company’s culture from its posts or feeds—and vice versa. But your personal posts can be taken the wrong way and put a potential employer off, so be careful.” Here’s how.

Personalize your headline: it’s the first thing employers will see on your profile, says Matthew Neethling of ProAppointments in South Africa. “Add key skills to your title, so as to bring up your information when companies and recruiters use Boolean search tools, which will give your profile more exposure.”

Describe your duties and responsibilities, and how you made an impact on previous employers, even if you were doing holiday work. Avoid clichés: in 2015, “responsible,” “strategic,” and “effective” topped LinkedIn’s yearly list of most overused words. Be sure to complete all profile sections: social media specialist Darain Faraz, head of global consumer communications at LinkedIn, reports that completed profiles are seven times more likely to be viewed by potential employers, and 11 times more likely to be viewed when they include a photo. “Just make sure you keep it professional,” he told Cosmo in an e-mail.

coworker and I were 40 minutes into a business road trip when it hit me: I was about to, um, crap my pants. “I totally have to pee”—I lied, starting to sweat—“like, urgently.”

This wasn’t my first bathroom emergency. It’s happened on the train, at the department store, during brunch. With so much experience, I can read my audience. This woman got squeamish when I said spicy food makes me perspire, so I knew she couldn’t handle the truth. Thankfully, we made it to a McDonald’s.

I’m grateful I didn’t soil myself, but why couldn’t I have just said I might? Everybody poops... Why do we pretend otherwise? I know plenty of gals who talk openly about sex— including embarrassing incidents—but are tight-lipped about their time on the toilet, as if they’ve never been in a crappy situation. In fact, women are on average twice as likely as men to endure chronic constipation, and up to 1 in 5 Americans suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its hallmark symptoms, including diarrhea.

“There is a basic disgust associated with poop,” says Nick Haslam, PhD, author of Psychology in the Bathroom. He points out that feces has always been linked to disease and infection (truth: it’s not as nasty as you think; it’s 75 percent water). And now some candid celebs are loosening up the conversation.

to go later,” says Beth Manoogian, MD, a gastroenterologist at the University of Michigan Health System. When stool sits in your colon, it gets harder, making it, well, harder to pass.

Alcohol, especially wine and beer, increases the motility of your gut, making everything move faster. This means less time for the colon to absorb water from the stool, resulting in the crass-but-accurate “beer shits.” Your best cure? Imodium.

WATER

H2O is essential for avoiding constipation. Besides plain old agua, broths and many fruits and vegetables are hydrating.

PROBIOTICS

Our gut is filled with trillions of bacteria. Probiotics fight the bad ones and help replenish the good ones. Yogurt, miso, sourdough bread, and some cheeses are solid sources.

IT’S GO TIME! DAY-OF DOS AND DON’TS DO wear loose, dark clothes for easy access…and to avoid stains.

DON’T take aspirin, ibuprofen, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or drink alcohol beforehand.

Both can cause heavier bleeding.

DO expect pain. The hardest areas: anywhere close to the bones (like the ribs) or joints (the knees and elbows), or with lots of nerve endings (the palms).

The least sensitive? Fleshier areas like your thighs and upper outer arms.

DON’T bring your gang. It could distract your artist or cause you to move too much.

DO eat a full meal beforehand. Bring some snacks to keep your blood sugar up.

DON’T remove the bandage for at least two hours after.

DO check in with your artist after the tattoo has healed to see if it needs a touch-up.

It’s normal for some ink to seep out during the healing process.

efore my boyfriend Joff and I went on a two-week vacation to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam back in December 2015, moving to Hanoi had never crossed our minds. Although we’d toyed with the idea of moving, it had become one of those things pushed aside and saved for when the perfect opportunity presented itself. Like a lot of people, we’d filed away the dream of moving somewhere new into that folder in our heads that

kept all our fumbled attempts at better lives, lumped together with forgotten promises, New Year’s resolutions, and drunken plans.

For years, a passage from Dave Eggers’s book You Shall Know Our Velocity rang in my head: “My mind was a condemned church with bats, but I swung from this dark mood when I thought about leaving.” Living in Manila, for the most part, was like being in a doomed relationship.

were there, but still I tried to focus on the good things. I hoped things would change, that they’d get better, but no matter how many silver linings I tried to count, the painful truth always had a way of rearing its ugly head.

Hanoi was the last stop on our trip, and I fell in love with the city immediately. From its picturesque lakes and tree-lined streets that had quaint cafés and eateries spilling out from all sides, to the controlled chaos of the Old Quarter, and, of course, the fantastic grub you could get on every street corner for a song. On the last night of our trip, we grabbed dinner with some friends who’d moved to Hanoi a few years back. Their local expat friends joined us: a young Scottish couple who had just moved to the city, a middleaged Australian couple who had been living there for 15 years, and a British guy in his thirties who’d been a few years deep into his life there.

We made small talk and asked them how they liked living in Hanoi, and it was something Sophie (one-half of the Scottish couple) said that stayed with us and became the catalyst we needed to make our move. She said that of all the places in Southeast Asia she’d lived in—and there were a few—Hanoi was her favorite. Now, that might sound like benign chatter to you, but it was music to our ears.

It was just what we needed to hear.

After we got back from our trip, it took just a few weeks of settling back into our lives until we finally caved, no longer able to deny what we both knew in our gut: it was time to go.

Five months later, we were back in Hanoi, and this time, for good.

Moving to another country may sound intimidating, and before you actually do it, it is. But what a lot of people forget about major life-changing decisions is that the choice to move is really just the beginning of a slew of smaller, more manageable choices you’ll have to make afterwards. Somehow this makes it a lot easier. Having another person to share the anxiety of a massive life upheaval doesn’t hurt either.

It’s been a year since we made the big move, and although it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, I couldn’t be happier about our decision. Despite living here for just over a year, I still feel like I haven’t pulled back all the layers to this city just yet. There’s still so much to be experienced here and in other cities in Vietnam. It’s far from perfect, and for all its beauty, there’s a lot of grit and darkness, too. But just like when you get a song stuck in your head, the only way to get it out is to sing the entire song through, and for Joff and me, that’s exactly what Hanoi is.

UP ALL NIGHT Sexy time got you famished? Here are easy snacks and drinks you can whip up with the bae in between rounds.

PARMESAN TRUFFLE POPCORN

1. Cook 1 bag of microwave popcorn according to instructions on the package.

2. Empty cooked popcorn into a large bowl. Drizzle with 1 tbsp. truffle oil and sprinkle with 1/2 c. grated Parmesan cheese and salt (to taste). Toss.

BEEF SKEWERS

1. Heat a frying pan over high heat.

2. Season 1 rib eye steak (cubed) with 1/2 tsp. ground cumin, salt, and ground black pepper, and toss to coat evenly. Skewer cubed steak on small barbecue sticks.

3. Add about 1 tbsp. oil to hot pan. Sear cubes to desired doneness.

1. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat.

2. Spread 1/4 c. butter on both sides of 4 slices sourdough bread.

Brown one side on hot pan. Flip. Layer 3 slices brie and 2 slices sharp cheddar each on two slices of toast. Top with the remaining slices, browned side on the cheeses. Flip to brown the other side.

3. Slice, drizzle with honey, and serve.

PALOMA GUAVA

1. In a glass, add 1 tsp. calamansi concentrate, 1/4 c. orange juice, 1/2 c. pink guava juice, and a pinch of rock salt. Stir to mix.

2. Pour in 3 tbsp. tequila, then fill glass with ice.

Garnish with lemon wedges.

WHISKEY SOUR

1. Stir 1 tbsp. calamansi concentrate and 1/4 c. orange juice in a glass. Fill glass with ice.

Clara Benin, the impossibly pure voice behind indie-folk songs “Closure” and “Human Eyes,” learned to play the guitar in high school when her family moved to a farm in Silay, Negros Occidental. The farm is where she now finds herself, after graduating with a degree in music business management last year, and releasing the album Human Eyes and the EP Riverchild in 2015. It’s a muchneeded retreat of sorts: Aside from the occasional gig or collab, Clara spends her days waking up to the sunrise, working as a barista at her family’s coffee shop, and writing music and lyrics. “I’m a very reserved person, so I don’t open up much, even to my best friends. Over the years, though, I’ve learned to be more comfortable with writing and singing about personal matters. I’m itching to release new stuff, but I’m waiting for the perfect time.”
