To create the look of plaid for this quilt, you will need to plan your colors carefully. We give yardage requirements for 9 medium solids and 9 matching light solids. Choose whatever nine colors that make you happy and then fi nd lighter values of those colors to make the buffalo plaid. Tip from Jen: Chambray can shrink quite a bit and bleed, so it’s important to pre-wash it before use. I also pre-wash the solids I use, but separately from the chambray. Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance throughout to ensure all elements of the quilt fi t together well.

Fabric yardage assumes 40" usable width of fabric (WOF) unless otherwise noted. • Blue chambray 3¼ yds. for blocks, border, and binding • 9 assorted medium solids *1 fat quarter each for blocks • 9 assorted light solids **1 fat eighth each for blocks • White solid 5⁄8 yd. for blocks • Backing 4½ yds. • Batting 74" x 74" *fat quarter = 18" x 20" **fat eighth = 9" x 20"

Patches are lettered in order of use. Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Border strips will be pieced and cut to exact length needed. You may want to make them longer to allow for piecing variations. • Blue chambray 7 strips 3½" x WOF for border 8 strips 2½" x WOF for binding 9 squares 11¼" (A) 36 squares 5½" (C) • 9 assorted medium solids

Easy Lessons, make 9 sets of 4 matching Flying Geese using blue chambray A’s and assorted medium B’s (Diagram I).

2. Join Flying Geese, chambray C’s, white D’s, and assorted D’s into rows as shown. Join rows to make a block (Diagram II). Make 9 blocks total.

NOTE: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps, watching block placement.

3. Sew 3 rows of 3 blocks each.

Join rows together.

4. Join chambray border strips and cut to sizes shown in Assembly Diagram.

Matching centers and ends, sew border side strips to quilt.

Repeat to add border top and bottom strips. 5. Layer, baste, and quilt. Jen machine quilted an allover loop pattern across the quilt surface. Bind the quilt.

Try this method to make four perfect Flying Geese units at the same time.

1. On wrong side of each of four small squares, mark diagonal line corner to corner. This will be your cutting line. Mark sewing lines ¼" away from each side of cutting line. 2. Place two small squares on opposite corners of one large square, right sides facing. Corners will overlap slightly at center. Sew along marked sewing lines. 3. Cut along marked cutting lines. Press seams toward small triangles.

4. Place remaining small squares on unit corners. Sew along marked sewing lines. 5. Cut along marked cutting lines. 6. Press seams toward small triangles to complete four Flying Geese units.
