This link enables the central processors to communicate with the various functions on the car via a common cable referred to as the bus; hence the

Initially this was used to warn of engine issues, worn brake pads etc, but now this also often includes bulb failures. The way in which this system tests bulbs varies between carmakers. Some use test pulses that are sent to the bulbs even when they are not lit, to check if the filaments are intact; others check the current drawn when the bulbs are switched on.

Bulbs that don’t return the correct status (via the bus) result in a warning light coming up on the dashboard. Most carmakers monitor the external mandatory lights, but not usually the interior lights.

LED replacement bulbs can be used legally for interior lighting applications and in general, failure detection will not be used in these applications. Some LED bulbs claim to be CANbus protected. The problem is, that to truly replicate a normal bulb, the CANbus LED bulb has to draw the same current as the standard bulb and this means that they run very hot. The extra heat generated has a detrimental effect on the LED, initially reducing light output and then causing early failure.
