Design Problem and Solution Strategies

Page 03

Design Background and Purpose

Mercedes-Benz Bionic Car Ostracioncubicus, commonly known as the yellow boxfish, has a stream lined hexagonal bone structure, strong muscles, and a body that is light in weight yet firm and resilient. These characteristics enable the bulky-looking yellow boxfish to travel through water with agility and speed while consuming little energy. The yellow boxfish was mimicked to design the Bionic Car, which is the best example of vehicle lightweighting. Note: Aresearch paper published in Journal of The RoyalSociety Interface indicates that the boxfish body shape does not particularly excel at drag reduction. Engineers from the Mercedes-Benz’s Research and Development Center and Daimler Chrysler conducted collaborative research and launched a futuristic concept vehicle known as theBoxfish in 2005. This bionics-inspired vehicle has the appearance of a box.

Mercedes-Benz Bionic Car Hummingbirds constitute the family of Trochilidae. They are extremely small and are able to flap their wings rapidly (roughly 80 times per 15 seconds depending on their sizes) to remain suspended in the air. The hummingbird is also the only bird species that can fly backward. Even with now indor external air lift, they are able to maintain altitude by rapidly flapping their wings. They subsequently can remain suspended in the air as a consisten theight. The hummingbird has inspired the invention of the robot hummingbird. It is slightly bigger and heavier than hummingbirds, but similar to hummingbird sin design and function; it can remain suspended in the air. The prototype of the hummingbird air craft can flyupto 10kph but weighs only 19 g. Currently, only a prototype is available, and the development is ongoing. This project is sponsored by the U.S. military. The hummingbird aircraft can be used for reconnaissance purposes in the future. BioTech

Birds know how to be silent-Kingfisher and owl Kingfishers are excellent fishers, normally catching fish by swooping down from perches and diving into the water at100 km/h, subsequently lifting fish out of the water with extreme precision and speed. Eiji Nakatsu – an engineer at JR-West, discovered that kingfishers are able to dive into water withoutmaking noiseor splashing water.Hefoundthat this ability was attributedtothe kingfisher’s sharp, wedge-shaped beakthat could seamlessly pierce through the surface of water. In the past, the bullet trains running the Shinkansen for medawind wallas entered tunnels, creating a thunderous boom and slowing down the train. The front of Sinkansen 500 series is designed in the shape of the kingfishers’ beak not only eliminating issue of the noise but also enhances the train’s fuel efficiency

Airbus Electric Aeroplane Prototype Is Eerily Silent In Flight Not exactly an aircraft concept, but rather improvements for their parts such as wings or landing gear come from Airbus’ studies of owls. Contrary to most birds, owls have primary feathers serrated like a comb. These feathers allow the air to pass easily through their wings, which, in turn, muffles the sound of air flowing over the wing. The European aerospace company is studying these birds in hopes of unlocking the secret of silent flight, and some of its current ideas include retractable, brush-like fringe on aircraft’s wings and a velvety coating on a landing gear.

The Armadillo The Folding Concept Car Inspired by Pangolins Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently unveiled a new concept car to add to the plethora of electric and space efficient vehicles. The research group headed by In-Soo Suh, Associate Professor in the Graduate School for Green Transportation, revealed a vehicle inspired by how an armadillo in the wild responds when faced with a predator. Employing textbook biomimicry, the vehicle achieves its armadillo-like transformation when the rear body of the car tucks over the front covering the windshield. The resulting decrease takes the body of the car from a fully extended 110 inches to 65 inches in its folded position.

Aerodynamics The Shape of a Green Duck Aerodynamics: The shape of a green duck’s beak helps this bird to make great migratory movements, as it improves the aerodynamics of its body. An example of how this shape found in nature can be used in design is the high speed train AVE S-102, whose design was inspired by the shape of the duck’s head and beak to reach greater speed.

The McLaren P1 hybrid supercar inspired by the sailfish skin The sailfish is a kind of turbo swordfish; one that has been clocked swimming 100m in around half the time it takes Usain Bolt to run it. They are capable of these bursts of breath-taking speed in order to chase down the small, fast-swimming fish they eat. The analysis revealed that the scales on the sailfish’s skin generate little vortices that result in the fish being enveloped in a bubble of air instead of denser water. This reduced drag allows the fish to move even faster. McLaren’s designers applied the same texture as the scales of the sailfish to the inside of the ducts that lead into the engine of their P1 hypercar. This increased the volume of air going into the engine by 17%, improving the car’s efficiency: the P1 has hybrid engines creating 903 horsepower and thus needs large amounts of air pumped into the engine to help combustion and engine cooling. The P1 also borrowed from the sailfish little ‘diplets’ on the torso of the fin where it meets the tail fin that the fish uses to straighten out the flow of pockets of air and water that move past it. This, Stephenson says, made the car more aerodynamic. BioTech

TRITOWN Electric Vehicle Yamaha- Scooter The frame along with each and every part composing the TRITOWN’s body are designed with organic-like forms to give the machine a new innovative emotional aesthetic. This is the product of a “biomimicry” design approach inspired by the shapes and structures found in the natural world, like the wings of birds, the skeletons of fish or the shells on a beach. Parts with curved shapes and a frame with a twisting structure were incorporated into the design, and after repeated checks and testing, we were able to make the TRITOWN’s chassis not only more compact and lighter, but also stronger. Using the same approach with the battery and other components, we were able to bring them together into a compact and stylish package. Furthermore, another point of particular focus was installing all of these components as well as the chassis parts without using covers to hide them, giving the TRITOWN a fully exposed or “naked” design. In particular, presenting Yamaha’s proprietary technology for three-wheeled leaning and the flowing motion it creates that complements the TRITOWN’s beautiful design so well is very much representative of Yamaha Motor itself. With this design that speaks so clearly of the look and feel of the chassis, its movement and its ease of use, the TRITOWN can transform everyday errands into an emotional and dynamic personal mobility experience.

Submarine inspired by bat sonar systems and sunfish neutral buoyancy Sunfish Neutral Buoyancy Sunfish does not have a gas-filled swim bladder. Therefore, the Sunfish has neutral buoyancy at any depth, thanks to a thick layer of water-rich, incompressible gelatinous tissue just beneath the skin and has nearly the exact same body density as seawater. Thus, the Submarine's ability to withstand varying volume changes in pressure in water was inspired by Sunfish Bats Sonar System For survival bats need food, but because of poor vision Bats use sonar to find food and avoid obstacles. Much like a bat-inspired submarine's sonar system makes a sound, listens for an echo, and then sees the outline of an object. Sonar works the same way, using echo waves. When an animal or a machine, for example, makes a sound, it sends sound waves to the environment around it. The waves bounce off nearby objects, and some of them bounce off the object that originally made the sound. BioTech

Page 25
