L DEL MAR ONT

Drawing inspiration from traditional spanish style architecture while embracing the coast charm of Cartagena, welcome to El Rancho Del Mar. The estate emphasizes open, flowing spaces with heigh ceilings, arched windows, and entryways, creating an airy atmosphere that invites natural light and fresh sea breezes.

Per the client’s vision, this design incorporates a circular pool, jacuzzi, breezway, and a large family room connected to a covered pergola, making it an ideal sanctuary for both relaxation and social gatherings.

EL RANCHO DEL MAR BACK SIDE ELEVATION

Upon entering, the home evokes a sense of grandeur and openness, with spaces for social connectivity, especially between the family and living rooms. At the front, a covered entrance, elevated by 4 inch risers, greets guests with a sense of stature and sophistication. Adding to the residence is a breezeway that links the garage to the main house, offering convenience and fluid movement between spaces. The blend of open interior spaces and the soothing outdoor retreat fosters feelings of warmth, relaxation, and connection to nature.

DESIGN PROCESS

This mixed use development emphasizes sustainability and inclusive design, featuring a visually appealing environment centered around creatively utilizing stormwater. The whale water feature in a central pond serves as the focal point, with pop-up shops organized around it and trailways radiating in various directions. The retail area strategically densifies near the center, gradually decreasing towards the periphery, while secluded multifamily and townhome housing maintains connectivity through the trail system with privacy-enhancing plantings.

The design incorporates additional elements such as a children’s slide, playground, curved retaining wall entrance, a bridge connecting retail stores to a sky-rise seating area, and a parking garage with a rooftop lounge, fostering a playful atmosphere with vibrant colors. The comprehensive trail system ensures inclusivity and connectivity, passing through focal points and linking to a preserved, secluded area, while innovative design solutions transform the stormwater area into an attractive and functional space for universal enjoyment.

EXPLORING & MITGATING THE EFFECTS OF OVERGRAZING

A CHANGING LANDSCAPE

The panels depict the stages of overgrazing, starting with a lush landscape rich in grasses and perennials crucial for local wildlife. The middle panel illustrates the impact of overgrazing by cattle, horses, and burros, while the bottom panel portrays a barren landscape dominated by non-native plants like cheatgrass, permanently altering the ecosystem.

FLORA/FAUNA RELATIONSHIP

The arch diagram highlights plant species consumed by wild horses and burros, emphasizing their dependence on native grasses, herbaceous perennials, and shrubs, crucial for food, cover, and nesting. The interconnected ecosystem, including endangered species underscores the importance of these flora and fauna in maintaining the ecology of the western U.S.

VEGETATION BREAKDOWN

The radar chart illustrates the dietary preferences of horses and burros, with 82% of their total diet comprised of grasses, 10% herbaceous perennials, and 8% shrubs. Overgrazing of grasses primarily impacts mammals and insects, while herbaceous perennials affect birds and insects, and shrub loss disproportionately impacts reptiles and insects.

CONCEPT FLOW

The comprehensive approach undertaken began with a meticulous overview of the challenge at hand. A profound analysis of the 1600acre parcel, comprising site inventory and examination, served as the foundation for an understanding of the wild horse dynamics and the surrounding environment. Delving into the intricacies of vegetation, slopes, soil composition, and elevation, the research provided crucial insights into the ecological context. Leveraging this knowledge, the design process unfolded, intricately weaving together the site’s unique features, expansive views, and inherent assets.

DESIGN PROCESS

At a lower elevation, accessible with a gentle slope under 5%, the design prioritizes minimal vegetation removal, establishing a practical foundation for the main lodge site and its adjacent event space.

MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT| INDIVIDUAL PROJECT |

Despite challenges such as steep slopes and limited accessibility at a higher elevation, this design showcased remarkable views, requiring careful vegetation management, and incorporated key elements like an integrated equestrian center and visitor center for a cohesive and multifunctional landscape.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

To help, heal, and home pets. Our goal is to help execute daily operations while also providing flexible paved space for adoption festivals, public outreach, and fundraising events in an attempt to engage the community and create a safe and enriched space for both people and pets. Through layered planting and the transformation of several open areas on the site, we aim to enhance the campus and community by providing functional and beautiful outdoor spaces that address needs for daily activities and special events, while appealing to and drawing in members of the larger community of Athens.

We share the vision with Athens Area Humane Society to change the perception of what a socially conscious community pet shelter really is — not just a shelter for pets, but more of a destination where a positive and uplifting experience helps inevitably create an inseparable bond between pets and people.

NEIGHBORHOOD DESIGN

DESIGN PROCESS & IMPLEMENTATION

Conducting a thorough site analysis, which includes evaluating slope, soil, hydrology, and vegetation, plays a pivotal role in the intricate landscape architecture process. The integration of a zoning map further aids in understanding neighboring areas and their designated uses. These analyses provide essential insights into a site's physical characteristics and ecological features, guiding decisions on its suitability for development.

RESIDENTIAL | INDIVIDUAL PROJECT |

SLOPE ANALYSIS

From assessing slope steepness to determining soil quality and studying water movement, each facet contributes to informed choices about prime development areas, those modifiable with adjustments, and those best preserved in their natural state.

VERTICAL ROAD ALIGNMENT

Proper horizontal and vertical road alignment represents a foundational discipline for landscape architects, governing safe travel across the breadth of transportation infrastructure from neighborhood bikeways to regional highways. Optimizing curve radii, slope gradients, and coordinate axes that underpin roadway templates directly impacts construction feasibility, access equity, rider experience, stormwater drainage, budget constraints, and integrative capacity enabling collateral spaces.

Crafting a functional yet beautiful nighttime experience, I selected a combination of multiple fixtures in an attempt to graciously illuminate winding paths guided by tree fixtures that feel organic. Attention focused toward the vibrant interior social areas as well as darker boundaries and changes in elevation like stairways, where visibility and security were augmented by installing starlights and stair lights spaced every two steps. Careful wire gauge calculations ensured voltage drops stayed under thresholds set for each planned run that branched across the two available transformers to selectively spotlight views, architectural elements, and lush focal points from trees to boulders. Guided by principles of directionality, accessibility, accentuating natural beauty and mitigating risks, the strategic placement of L-shaped path lights, stair lights and illuminated aggregate achieved a sense of flow, continuity and warmth welcoming homeowners and visitors alike to safely navigate and gather within the landscape long after sunset.
