If you’ve never seen Central Arizona, if you’ve only traveled

the “Interstate Corridors” of I-10 and I-40, or if you think Arizona is simply the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon and the Great Sonoran Desert, then prepare yourself for what we believe may prove to be one of the most pleasant surprises of your life.

On the drive up from the glitter of metropolitan Phoenix, the traveler marvels as the Sonoran Cottonwood, mesquite, Palo Verde and Saguaro stubbornly give way to grasslands dotted with oak, pinyon and juniper. As the altitude increases and the temperature drops, the edges of a vast, sprawling pine forest come into view. Few know that Central Arizona’s National Forests contain the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa Pine, the source of what environmentalists worldwide describe as “some of the purest air to be found anywhere on the planet.” The trip up the Beeline Highway to Payson, the vibrant hub of the Rim Country communities, is a scenic and gradual climb to just over 5000 feet. Highway 87 continues north to Pine, and eventually reaches 6000' in the rarefied air of Strawberry Village.

If you were to drive north from Shea Boulevard for just over an hour on the Beeline Highway (State Hwy 87), you’d find you’re 4000 feet higher in elevation than Phoenix in the Valley of the Sun, and fifteen to twenty degrees cooler, no matter what time of year.

Pine & Strawberry So, you’d like a little cabin in the mountains, a quiet, secluded place where you can get away from it all, but Payson seems a little too “suburban”, too much like a real town, with traffic lights and everything? Well, hop back up on that buckboard, partner, and head north for about another sixteen miles to the quaint alpine villages of Pine and Strawberry. Here you’ll find exactly what you’ve been looking for, and not a bit more! Founded back in the 1870’s and 80’s, Pine and Strawberry are two of the prettiest little “bedroom communities” you could ever imagine, each tucked snugly in its own lush, pine-covered valley, nestled against the magnificent backdrop of the towering Mogollon Rim. Here the residents enjoy all four of the seasons, each distinct from the others, and all of them pleasantly mild by comparison. HEBER~OVERGAARD is located about 50 east of Payson in northeastern Arizona’s Navajo County. Situated in the Sitgreaves National Forest above the Mogollon Rim, the elevations of these twin communities range from 6,435 feet in Heber to 6,620 feet in Overgaard. Both are unincorporated. The communities are reached from Phoenix by taking state Highway 87 north to Payson, or from Winslow by taking state Highway 87 south to Payson, then continuing east via state Highway 260. During the Mormon migration in 1876 and 1877, the Little Colorado River settlements were established. James E. Shelley and Sanford Porter, Jr. founded Heber in 1883. Heber was named after Heber J. Grant, a prominent member of the Mormon Church. The post office in Heber was established in 1890 by James E. Shelley.

SCENIC ATTRACTIONS... The Heber~Overgaard area is surrounded by many year-round recreational opportunities and points of scenic interest. Immediately south of Heber~Overgaard is the Mogollon Rim, a steep escarpment ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 feet from the base to the highest plateau. The Rim divides the northern plateau region from the lower central and southern areas. The Rim offers many exceptional views and numerous man-made lakes ideal for boating and other water sports. Hunting for elk, deer, turkey, antelope and bear is permitted. Fishing, in nearby trout streams, is popular. There are also extensive picnic and camping facilities available within the area. Other scenic attractions in the area include Chevelon Canyon Dam, the Canyon Creek Fish Hatchery, Chevelon Butte, and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The 200-acre Mogollon Lake three miles east of Overgaard is in the planning stages.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES... Heber~Overgaard offers many community facilities including a library, 40-acre park, and many athletic facilities: baseball, football and Little League fields; basketball, volleyball, tennis and racquet ball courts; and a golf course. COMMUNICATION... In addition to communication resources from the rest of the state, Heber~Overgaard has a weekly newspaper, The Pine Graphics Weekly, receives several radio stations from Holbrook, Show Low and Flagstaff, has 12 television channels available on cable, and one from Flagstaff. Local internet dial-up services are also available.

AIRPORT... Residents of Heber~Overgaard have access to public airports in Show Low 36 miles southeast, or Taylor, 29 miles northeast. LODGING AND MEETING FACILITIES... There are two motels with 56 units available in the area, and four meeting facilities with the largest seating up to 300, three with seating for 50 or less. Several RV parks and cabin rentals are available. The 42-unit Best Western Sawmill Inn was completed in September 1995.

EDUCATIONAL... Heber/Overgaard has two elementary school, junior high and high school. Student enrollment is approximately 551. Northland Pioneer College, a state-accredited community college, serves Navajo County. The college has centers located in Winslow, Snowflake, Heber and Show Low. Christopher Creek

The Christopher Creek area was once traveled by the ancient Anasazi, and was more recently made famous by Zane Grey, many of whose classic Western novels were set in this mystical, wild land he called “Tonto Country”. Located within one of the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa Pines, the pure air carries aloft the sweet fragrance of pine and juniper, day in and day out. Within minutes of Christopher Creek, avid anglers can be found knee deep in rushing streams that tumble beneath a canopy of oak and sycamore; or you may find them casting into one of the Seven Rim Lakes on top of the Mogollon Rim. Wildlife of all kinds and descriptions inhabits this beautifully rugged and sometimes primitive area. Elk, deer, eagle, turkey, squirrel and rabbit are among the many species that can be seen almost at will. Hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians can enjoy the Highline Trail, over fifty-one miles of maintained recreational area, winding through the foothills beneath The Rim, with occasional trails that break away and ascend through the pines to the very top.

THIS PICTURESQUE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE, at an elevation of 5900 feet just 22 miles east of Payson, is nestled on the banks of spring fed Christopher Creek, which runs just beneath the majestic Mogollon Rim. This towering escarpment of Red Rock known locally as “The Rim” heaves its zigzag cliffs and ledges gloriously upward for over 200 miles, reaching elevations near 8,000 feet.

From Christopher Creek, the more adventurous can explore caves and hidden fossil beds, while others follow clear streams and lakes, becoming part of the wild woodland. Experience the miles and miles of rolling greenery, the peaceful solitude... feel thousands of miles from home. There is no playground like the forest! The Seven Rim Lakes and many streams are stocked with trout through the summer, and Woods Canyon Lake offers boat rentals. Among the many activities to enjoy are hiking, fishing, camping and horseback riding; driving tours, wildlife and bird watching; cross country skiing and snow mobiling. All activities are seasonal, of course. The various driving tours of the area are numerous and truly spectacular. On top of the Rim is Forest Service Road 300, or FS 300, a scenic drive with lookouts providing breathtakingly awesome views of the vast Tonto National Forest below. Along the way, visitors are encouraged stop and fish one of the many lakes and streams, or explore the numerous and wellmarked Historical Sites. Numerous horse rental stables operate daily throughout the area. Most have guides ready to show visitors this diverse country on horseback. The “Tunnel to Nowhere” is a short 3/4 mile ride just below The Rim to the spot where, in 1883, the Arizona Mineral Belt Railroad company, desiring a more direct route for a north-south rail line, tried to bore into and up through the Mogollon Rim! GETTING THERE... Christopher Creek is approximately 100 miles from Phoenix. Take the Beeline Highway (State Route 87) north to Payson, then Highway 260 east for 22 scenic miles to Christopher Creek. Young / Pleasant Valley Young, as the crow flies, is approximately 80 miles northeast of the Phoenix metro area. From the East Valley, it’s a pleasant three-hour drive up to Young. The town’s name, originally Pleasant Valley, was changed to Young because of Miss Ola Young, who served fifty years as the town’s first postmaster. To get there from Payson: Travel east on Hwy 260 approximately 33 miles. Climb up the face of the Mogollon Rim, continuing to the Young Road turnoff (FR 512). Turn right (south), slow down and enjoy the remaining 17 miles of all-weather, county-maintained road until the pavement begins again 4½ miles from the north edge of town.

To get there from Globe: Travel north on Hwy 88 toward Roosevelt Lake for approximately 15 miles to the Hwy 288 turnoff. The first 11 miles of Hwy 288 are paved, and the next 35 have a well-maintained, all-weather driving surface. Slow down and enjoy the scenery. To get there by air: One can fly into what locals refer to as the “Young International Airport”, an unpaved, unlighted 4752’ runway that can actually accommodate most twin-engine aircraft. It is located on the Chamberlain Trail, about 5 miles from Young. Be sure to arrange for someone to pick you up, as there are no facilities at the airstrip, and taxis are few and far between.

Environment... The town of Young is located in Pleasant Valley, surrounded by the Tonto National Forest which attracts campers, hunters and fishermen. There are miles of trails to explore on horseback or on foot. Most areas in Young offer breath-taking views of the mountains that surround Pleasant Valley.

Winters are short and can be wet, with occasional 3 to 8 inch snow accumulation. A large snow storm here or on the Rim can mean several days without electricity in the town of Young. This adds, we feel, to the “true mountain experience”. The average high in January is 51º F. Low temperatures rarely dip below 10º. Woodstoves are a common source of home heating in Young. Summer high-low temperatures usually fluctuate about 40º, from daily highs of 80º - 95º to nighttime lows of 40º - 55º. The humidity is low, but not as dry as the desert. Air conditioning is rarely needed in Pleasant Valley. Rainfall averages about 25 inches annually. In 1992, a very wet year, Young had 33 inches! Monsoon storms in the area begin in late June, while May is generally the driest month. Gardeners begin planting frost-resistant veggies in April or May. It is possible to have frost (or even snow!) as late as early June. There are major archaeological finds and other fascinating historical sites throughout the entire area. On the 3rd weekend in July, Young celebrates Pleasant Valley Days with a parade and tours of the cabins and battle sites of the “Pleasant Valley War”. The museums

The valley itself is fertile, with a rich and plentiful water supply. The elevation ranges from 5100 to 5600 feet, which makes for four mild but distinct seasons and a 6-month growing season. Fruit trees, berries, grapes as well as vegetable gardens flourish here. Juniper, oaks and Ponderosa Pines cover the hills and mountains surrounding Young, while the creek beds are lined with sycamores, walnut, willows and cottonwoods.

are open every weekend in summer, and gymkhanas are held for young people. There is a local Mormon congregation, plus the Young Baptist Church, and Grace Bible Fellowship Church. Young also has two grocery stores, a restaurant, an auto parts store, auto mechanic shops, a trap club and a library. There are Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Little League Baseball. The Community Council coordinates various affairs for the town and manages a roping arena and the community center. The U.S. Mail comes up six days a week from Globe. UPS delivers on weekdays, and picks up at a local business site. Federal Express delivers as needed, but does not do pick-ups... yet.

Tonto Basin Roosevelt Lake THE GREAT TONTO BASIN, a verdant oasis in the Sonoran desert, lies in the Salt River valley beneath the Mogollon Rim in Central Arizona, roughly mid-way between Phoenix and Payson. Bounded by Mt. Ord and Four Peaks to the west, the Hellsgate Wilderness Area to the north, and the Sierra Ancha and Aztec Peak to the east, the broad, grassy plain contains Roosevelt Lake, a favorite of avid anglers searching for trophy largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish and crappie, and home to several professional tournaments. Add in water-skiing, jet-skiing, sailing, swimming and general boating recreation and you have one of the most popular water recreation destinations in the region. At an elevation of 2151’ ASL, air temperatures generally fall 5° to 10° cooler than Phoenix in the summer, and 20° to 30° warmer than Payson in the winter. Although water temperatures can exceed 90°F in July, cooling afternoon thunderstorms are a blessing. With miles and miles of beach area for camping along the lake’s edges, it is the largest man-made reservoir located entirely in the state of Arizona. Fed from the north by Tonto Creek, and from the south by the Salt River, Roosevelt Lake was completed in 1911. It is 24 miles long with a maximum depth of over 300’, has 128 miles of shoreline, and covers an area of about 22,000 acres when full. The 1080’ long Roosevelt Bridge near the dam on the lake’s western shore is the longest two lane, single-span, steel arch bridge in North America. Originally settled by cattle ranchers in the mid-1800s, the Great Tonto Basin is now home to approximately 1500 fulltime residents. And although this major center for hunting, fishing, boating, camping, quad-riding and general vacationing is geographically close to Phoenix, the shortest route from the south is through Apache Junction via the unpaved Apache Trail, so the number of visitors on any given day is surprisingly less than many of the other lakes close to the city. This makes Roosevelt Lake a delightfully uncrowded weekend destination, and a place of virtual serenity midweek. Paved access from the west and north is via the Beeline Highway (SR 87) to SR 188, which then follows the western shoreline of the lake south to Globe. Along the highway you’ll find the communities of Jake’s Corner, Punkin Center, Tonto Basin and Roosevelt, offering two grocery stores, a post office, several home-style restaurants, two establishments providing motel-style accommodations, four gas stations, four nightspots and a private marina on the lake with gas services and a general store open to the public. In addition to ample “at large” locations for RVers and tent campers, there is a wildlife refuge area at the northern end of the lake, and literally hundreds and hundreds of developed camp sites along

the western shoreline. The eastern shore of the lake is extremely rugged and undeveloped, accessible only by boat and jeep trails. Popular destinations for tourists, hikers and photographers are the guided and self-guided tours at the Tonto National Monument, just a couple miles south of the marina on Hwy 188. These well-preserved cliff dwellings, built high above the basin floor and occupied by the Salado culture between 1150 and 1450 AD, have been both protected and open to the public since 1907, when President Theodore Roosevelt established the monument under the Antiquities Act of 1906. Immediately adjacent to the marina, Tonto National Forest Visitor Center features a museum with archeological exhibits and a 12-minute orientation slide program, a gift shop, interpretive literature, restrooms and vending machines.
