The tradition of Santa Clause can be traced to the early 1820’s. According to legend he lives at the North Pole with a number of magical elves and 9 flying reindeer. On Christmas Eve he delivers gifts to good children and coal to naughty ones. Modern Santa is derived from the Dutch figure Sinterklaas.

#2 THE CHRISTMAS TREE-

This custom comes from early modern Germany. Evergreens were thought to represent the ever-burning fire of life. Fir or fire is an ancient symbol for spirit. Originally decorated with edibles then illuminated with candles. The modern tree is now trimmed with electric lights, garland, tinsel & other ornaments.

#3 CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS

There are many legends around this popular tradition! One which began in a European country tells of children putting out their boots filled with carrots, straw & sugar for the Norse God Odin’s flying horse to eat. In return, Odin would reward them with gifts or candy. Today children hang stockings from the mantel for Santa to fill.

CHRISTMAS COOKIES

Modern Christmas cookies can trace their history back to Medieval Europe biscuits. The earliest examples of Christmas Cookies in the US were brought by the Dutch in the early 17th century. Since the early 1930’s children have left cookies and milk out for Santa on Christmas Eve. Christmas cookie baking and exchanges have become a part of modern day tradition.

NATIVITY

The Nativity depicts accounts of the Birth of Jesus, primarily based on the two gospels of Luke & Matthew. The crèche or manger scene exhibits figures representing baby Jesus, his mother Mary and Joseph along with shepherds, the Magi and angels displayed near a barn or cave. The scene typically includes barn animals such as donkeys, oxen, sheep and the Magi’s camels.

Music is an early feature of the Christmas season with references as far back as the Middle Ages. The English combined circle dances with singing and called them carols. Later the word carol came to mean a song in which a religious topic is treated in a festive style. Today, playing and singing Christmas carols is a common tradition.

PLUM PUDDING

From medieval England, Christmas pudding recipes have been handed down for generations. Prepared with 13 ingredients to represent Christ and the 12 apostles, each family member takes a turn at stirring from east to west to honor the Magi and their journey. Christmas pudding is traditionally served on Christmas Day.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH

First performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742, the Messiah is an English-language oratorio that is compiled with scriptural text portraying the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. The Messiah was composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel & is traditionally performed around the Christmas holiday.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

The first Christmas cards were illustrated by John Callcott Horsley in London on the 1st of May, 1843. The production of Christmas cards was profitable throughout the 20th century with changing themes and techniques. Today e-cards, email and telephone calls are the most common method of sending Christmas greetings, making the practice of sending Christmas cards soon to be a thing of the past.

GARLAND

Early settlers to America brought the custom of Christmas garland. Pine, spruce and cedar boughs were used in their making. Making Christmas garlands added to the family income after harvest. The turn of the 20th century saw more artificial decorations growing in popularity, reducing the cutting of greenery.

#11 JINGLE BELLS

Bell tolling had its origin in the pagan winter festivals & celebrations, used to drive away evil spirits. Later bells were used for other purposes including announcing to the world the birth of the Messiah Jesus Christ. Today, Sleigh bells announce the arrival of Santa’s sleigh!

#12 LUMINARIA

Brown paper bags weighted down with sand and illuminated from within by a lit candle. The hope among Roman Catholics is that the light will guide the spirit of the Christ child to one’s home. This tradition comes to us from New Mexico and surrounding states.

ADVENT CALENDAR

The origins of the Advent calendar come from German Lutherans as far back as the beginning of the 19th century, used to count town the first 24 days of December. In anticipation of Christmas, Advent Calendars have a window to open for each day leading up to Christmas Eve. Each window reveals a gift ranging from a toy or chocolate to a poem, image or story.

CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

The custom of decorating Christmas trees emerged in the early 16th century Germany. Trees were embellished with wafers, candies, fruits, flowers and tinsels of tin and silver to entertain the children. Christmas tree ornaments reached America around 1880 when F.W. Woolworth sold the first imported glass ornaments in his shop. Today, many decorate their trees with ornaments handed down from generations.

#15 CHRISTMAS PICKLE

Believed to have originated in Germany, parents would hide an ornament shaped as a pickle in the tree. The first child to find the pickle was considered to be the most intelligent child in the family and often received an additional gift from St. Nicholas.

#16 YULE LOG

The Yule Log is a large and extremely hard log which is burned in the hearth on Christmas Eve. Origins of the Yule Log come from many cultures but all believe that burning the Yule Log brings prosperity and protection from evil.

#17 WASSAILING

The practice of wassailing has its roots in the Middle Ages as a form of recipient initiated charitable giving, not to be considered as begging. Peasants would visit the lord of the manor and sing in return for blessings and goodwill. At times, wassailers would receive treats such as figgy puddings and cider.

#18 TINSEL

Tinsel was invented in Germany around 1610. Originally made from strands of silver was added to Christmas trees to enhance the flickering of the candles on the tree. The silver would tarnish quickly from the heat of the candlelight so other shiny metals were substituted. Modern tinsel is typically made from PVC film coated with a metallic finish and sliced into thin strips.

NUTCRACKER

Nutcrackers first originated in Germany and come in the form of wooden carvings of a soldier, knight, king or other profession. Nutcrackers are thought to have guardian-like properties because of their strong appearance.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

The 12 Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day (December 25th) and ending the evening of January 5th. A tradition largely forgotten in the United States, the 12 Days of Christmas link together two great feasts of the Lord; Nativity and Theophany. This period of continuous feasting, merrymaking and gift giving ends with all decorations being taken down by the end of the 12th day.

CANDY CANE

The Christmas Candy Cane symbolizes the life and birth of Jesus Christ. Its origin began in the 1670’s when a German Choirmaster gave sugar sticks bent into a shepherd’s staff to children who attended the Christmas services. In 1900 the white candy received its red stripes and peppermint flavoring. The candy cane is shaped as a shepherd’s staff when turned one way and a “J” for Jesus if turned the other. The sweetness of the candy is symbolic of the sweet Gospel, the hardness for the solid promises made by Jesus, the whiteness of the Virgin Birth, the peppermint of sacrifice and purification.

There is pleasure in giving as well as receiving gifts and we all desire to know the joy of opening a gift package. Early gifts were simple and inexpensive and have grown in to a multi-billion dollar business.

MISTLETOE

Mistletoe is believed to have magical powers of healing and is also the mark of peace and goodwill. According to Norse mythology when a man and a woman meet under the hanging of mistletoe they are obliged to kiss. With each kiss, a berry is plucked from the bush, when the berries are gone the obligation of the kiss ceases.

#24 ANGELS

Angels are considered immortal; their wings symbolize purity, virtue and innocence. Angels brought the news of the birth of the Lord Jesus and spread the news of his arrival to all corners of the earth. Many Christmas trees include an angel at the top to symbolize their great importance in the role they played in the birth of Jesus Christ.

#25 HANUKKAH

An eight day Jewish holiday commemorating the re dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to Late December in the Gregorian calendar. This is also known as the Festival of Lights.

A unique candelabrum or 9 branched light stand, used on the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Each night of the holiday, one additional candle is lit until all eight are lit on the final night. The lighting of the Menorah symbolizes the miracle of the one-day supply of oil miraculously lasting eight days in the sacred Temple.
