New Kid on the Block Emporio Armani is the young, playful and always stylish sibling to the classically Italian Giorgio Armani

MAILBOXLIFE.COM | 13

ow open on Level 2 at Mailbox, the luxurious Emporio Armani store boasts a fine collection of formal tailoring, laid-back athleisure and ready-to-wear garments. This is the place for young professionals seeking a contemporary, modern style. As one of the most iconic names in fashion history, Giorgio Armani has certainly made an impact on the industry in the past 40 years. He’s come a long way since his days as a sales associate on the shop floor of a popular Italian department store, having established Emporio Armani back in the early 1980s as a sub-brand of the already incredibly successful Giorgio Armani brand. Since then, he’s been hailed as ‘the man who invented red-carpet dressing’, having dressed a variety of Hollywood celebrities at glamorous events, including Lady Gaga’s most recent Armani Privé gown at the 2018 Grammy Awards. He’s also developed relationships with some of the biggest names in the world, from Rihanna’s Armani Jeans collection to an Emporio Armani campaign starring Calvin Harris and underwear shoots with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. Since streamlining his brands last year, the Emporio Armani brand has become a key focus, offering a new vision for the brand in

“Playing with fashion, without forsaking beauty: this is the message of the collection.” the form of a variety of garish prints, playful fabrics and sporty staples. Showcased at Tobacco Dock last year for London Fashion Week, the latest collection has arrived in the stylish store fresh off the catwalk, featuring almost-intangible materials: technical cotton fabrics, and silk and voile with a soft, sheer handle, all enhanced by a muted palette of pastel hues. Key items include windbreakers, duster coats, T-shirts, dresses, suits, jackets, cargo pants and shorts, designed to wear layered, mixed and matched as elements of a unique personal expression. This is a collection dedicated to freespirited, dynamic women, unabashedly showing their legs with a sporty spring in their step. A celebration of feminine beauty in all its nuances, whether with high heels or sneakers, the SS18 collection highlights that being yourself is what really counts.

DID YOU KNOW? The latest Emporio Armani SS18 campaign was completely street cast to celebrate diversity and individuality, whilst representing ‘the energy of an eclectic tribe of independent thinkers, experimenters, and edgepushers’. We love it!

Skincare Reimagined The Mr Flint collection: Includes Everyday Wash, Moisturiser, Eye Hero and Exfoliator 2x, £120 available in-store and online

Flint+Flint is the luxurious ‘anti-spa’ that aims to beautify Birmingham

ollowing its opening at Mailbox last year, we take a look at the evolution of the bad boy skincare brand that’s turning the dull and clinical on its head. When husband and wife team Adam and Maxine Flint saw a gap in the market for high-quality, expert skincare, it set them on a mission to launch their eponymous brand and build a career around their passion for innovative, results-driven aesthetic services. With affordability at the heart of their ethos, the couple were keen to pull away from the dull and generic clinic experience and instead drew on more than 20 years’ industry experience to offer a new level of unisex skincare with an unconventional twist. They call it the ‘anti-spa’. Rather than the traditional stark, surgery-style decor, Flint+Flint’s edgy Mailbox clinic boasts dark, opulent interiors with pop-art inspired graphics and furniture. With its bold, black entrance, the inside oozes luxury from the relaxing reception area to the six state-of-the-art treatment rooms. “The Flint+Flint clinic was a concept I had in mind for some time,” explains Adam. “The ‘antispa’ idea came from not wanting white, bright, chrome and glass, and instead I wanted to make it moody, more seductive. It’s like when Agent Provocateur started – until that point lingerie had been sold in the same, stuffy way for more than 100 years; and beauty is not that different.”

After launching their skincare product range in 2014, the duo opened their first concept clinic in Harvey Nichols, Manchester two years later. But when the opportunity arose for them to bring Flint+Flint to Birmingham, they saw it as a chance to take the brand one step further. “We’ve had skin clinics for more than 10 years and were instrumental in the way cosmetic dentistry took off in the UK. To be honest it was all a bit boring and generic before then,” says Adam. “Our products were developed based on 20 years’ of experience, providing more than 1.5 million treatments in our clinics, selling countless lines of skincare ranges in more than 60 countries and working closely with a team of dermatologists.

“We’d love to become the champions of the high street for skincare and see our new breed of ‘anti-spa’ clinics open across the UK.” “When we heard about the opportunity at Mailbox we knew straight away this would be our flagship. It’s the perfect stage for us and it’s fantastic to be surrounded by high-end retailers to collaborate with,” Adam adds enthusiastically. For Maxine, the decision to expand into the city was an obvious one. “I have deep roots in Birmingham, having spent many happy years growing up here,” she says. “My parents and many old friends still live here and I love coming back to visit. It was a natural choice for us and we knew that a buzzing, forward-thinking city like Birmingham would embrace our ‘anti-spa’ concept.” And so last year Flint+Flint opened the doors to its first stand-alone flagship on Level 1 at Mailbox, bringing with it both

high-quality products and a selection of non-invasive treatments aimed at men and women. Flint+Flint is the brand that’s braving to be different and its impressive treatment list includes facials, high-tech oxygen skin treatments and super quick hair removal, all performed by fully-qualified and trained doctors, nurses and aestheticians. This diverse range of therapies can be suited and customised to all skin types and have been hand-picked to tackle a whole range of issues. One of the brand’s many strengths, alongside working to break the taboo that surrounds non-invasive techniques, is that its treatments can be tailor-made to meet a client’s individual needs. Maxine says, “We offer a wide range of treatments for every skin concern, from relaxing facials to the more serious stuff like acne or scarring. Our Birmingham clinic has a very well-rounded offer; whether you’re looking for an indulgent massage, sports therapy treatments, wrinkle-reducing injectables or advanced laser therapies. “We are also recognised as an Obagi skincare centre of excellence, the first of its kind in the UK. These prescriptive products allow our doctors and nurses to address specific skin conditions and deliver real results.” It’s taken hard work and a belief in their talents to get Flint+Flint to where it is now says Maxine, but she is proud to see how their brand is going from strength to strength. “We believe we can offer something for everyone, whether you’re new to skincare, curious about the latest procedures, a treatment worshipper or just someone looking for experienced and well-informed advice.” And what does the future hold? “As well as developing additional skincare products, we are also out scouting for new locations for more clinics,” Maxine adds. “Ultimately, we’d love to become the champions of the high street for skincare and see our new breed of ‘anti-spa’ clinics open across the UK.”

You first opened Sprout last June. What was the inspiration behind it? Sprout was born out of what I love to cook and eat at home. Middle eastern flavours are so wonderful and full of variety, I keep going back to them. I wanted to share the idea for the upcoming restaurant I’m working on. It’s great to bring the idea to life and showcase what’s in store for guests when it opens. Sprout was really successful when you ran it at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge. Where did the idea to collaborate with Harvey Nichols come from? We were exploring opportunities to launch Sprout as a pop-up and collaborating with such an iconic store seemed the perfect place to do it. The four nights last June worked brilliantly, so when Harvey Nichols suggested taking Sprout to some of the regional stores, I jumped at the chance. How did you come up with the menu for Sprout? And was it important to you to showcase certain ingredients that diners may not have tried before? It’s evolving all the time – I love big sharing plates that people can just dive into; my shakshuka is a great example of this. I usually cook this in a huge pan, and just put it in the middle of the table for everyone to help themselves to.
