The beautiful new Homewares at Mailbox is open on Level One

his season is all about celebrating our brand new openings. Earlier this month, we launched Homewares at Mailbox which features some of the world’s most luxurious brands including our flagship stores, MADE.COM and Heal’s. To help you get to know our new arrivals a little better, we sat down with some of the faces behind the brands to discover their history, evolution of the brand, and take a look at their favourite products from the current collections available at Mailbox. Joined by Danish brand BoConcept, Italian design experts Calligaris, Design Quarter, bespoke furniture brand Wesley Barrell and lighting designer, iLite - all located on Level One - the arrival of homewares to Mailbox follows the recent opening of The Wedding Club and high-end skincare brand Flint + Flint. Our magazine would not be complete without taking a look at the latest offerings from our fashion and lifestyle stores. With Christmas looming, we run through the top products on our radar and the season’s biggest catwalk trends from our leading fashion brands. We also delve into winter’s must-have beauty products and take a look at the mouthwatering festive feasts on offer at some of our restaurants. Allowing you to make the most out of your time at Mailbox, we will show you all the benefits you can enjoy by downloading our app. From money can’t buy experiences, rewards and added features including booking a table at your favourite restaurant, the Mailbox app allows you to control your time at Mailbox at the touch of a button. From furniture to fashion, Mailbox has everything you need to make the most out this season.

I Interview

Behind the Brand: MADE.COM We sit down with MADE.COM’s Chief Creative Officer, Jo Jackson, to talk about the evolution of the brand

PROFILE:

Jo Jackson, Chief Creative Officer

What attracted you to work for MADE.COM? Fundamentally, it was the importance of making design accessible to everyone. It is about being able to furnish your home with beautiful, well made modern designs at a realistic, uninflated cost. It is an online-native business at heart, so most imporatanly it is a brand built on tech and innovation, designed to challenge the norm and disrupt the industry. I love that. Since your time with the company, how have you seen it progress and develop? I have just joined in the last two months, but I have been a fan of the brand since it launched seven years ago. Next in the pipeline is MADE TalentLAB, which we have just launched. It is essentially a crowdfunding style platform for new designers to get their ideas made. Anyone can upload 8 | MAILBOXLIFE.COM

their design idea, and customers then pledge a small, refundable deposit on the items they would most like to buy. Looking forward, we are excited to be opening strategic showroom experiences across Europe. After Birmingham, we will be looking to renovate and expand our London showroom early next year to create a flagship brand experience that will blur the boundaries between digital and physical retail.

and choice at the right price by cutting out all the middlemen to bring you a top quality product, with a lower price. We work directly with the maker to produce in smaller batches, rather than mass producing and holding a lot of stock around the world. That means you do sometimes have to wait a bit longer for your items to be delivered, but the pay off is getting unique products designed and made, for a better price.

What does MADE.COM aim to provide for its customers? The whole ethos of the brand is to bring modern, designer furniture and homewares to customers at an accessible price, without compromising on quality. We are able to make small batches of products, reacting to trends and demands. We have three new collections arriving every week, so you need to be quick to grab things, as some don’t stay online for long!

For people that may not be aware of MADE.COM, how would you summarise the brand? We believe that great design is for everyone. Ning Li (Founder) first came up with the idea of MADE.COM when trying to kit out his own flat in Paris. He was so frustrated by the lack of inexpensive, good quality furniture that he felt there had to be an alternative. So he founded a team of designers and set about re-defining the process. The concept was obvious: simplify things, work directly with the makers and bring high-end lifestyle design to everyone, everywhere at a fair price.

You have had a pop-up store in the city in the past, what attracted you to opening a permanent space in Birmingham and Mailbox? We know we have a huge existing customer base in and around Birmingham. Even though we are a digital business, and that most people are very happy to just buy online, there is also a certain demographic of our customers that like to look and feel the quality of our products in real life. We wanted to give our Birmingham customers a place to see a selection of our ever-growing catalogue of products. MADE.COM believes in creating products that offer original furniture at fair prices. What do you think the brand will bring to customers at Mailbox? This is a place to see the quality of our products, and the breadth of what we make. Recently we have expanded into small homewares, gifting and even wearables, so we have some of that on show at Mailbox as well for customers to browse. What makes the company unique? Our products and pricing. We have a blend of designs that we do in-house and the rest is collaborations with new and established designers. Just because you do not want to spend thousands on a sofa, does not mean you have to buy the same as everyone else. Our purpose is to give our customers freedom

What is your favourite product available in-store and why? I love this Alana valet stand (pictured right). It comes in other finishes, but I am obsessing over copper details in my home at the moment. This is a great, compact and on-trend storage solution for a small guest room; wardrobe, side stand and mirror all in one! It is all movable so it would fit into even the tightest space and still look great. I would pair it with the Margot accent chair (pictured right) for an extra lavish bedroom look, it is one of our most lust-worthy items at the minute. Find MADE.COM on Level One

I Interview

Behind the Brand: Heal’s Hamish Mansbridge, CEO of Heal’s, discusses one of the country’s most historical luxury furniture brands

PROFILE:

Hamish Mansbridge CEO

Heal’s is one of the country’s most historical luxury brands, can you tell us a little bit about its history and heritage. Heal’s has been going for over 200 years. We believe it is the oldest furniture shop in the UK and it is certainly the most prestigious. Heal’s was the first company to bring proper feather mattresses to the UK (before that you would have been sleeping on a straw paliasse); we were also amongst the first to sell electric light fittings. We converted our factory to make parachutes during the war and restored the Buckingham Palace banqueting table for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. We are very proud of our past, but only if it helps make us even better in the future. 12 | MAILBOXLIFE.COM

Tell us a bit about your background. I have been really lucky with my career and learned my trade at two other great retailers, The White Company and the Snow & Rock Group. I am immensely proud to lead such an iconic business, I feel a real sense of responsibility not just to the current team and our owners, but also to the 200 plus years of history. Since your time with the brand, how have you seen it progress and develop? When you are privileged enough to run a business like Heal’s you have to understand the DNA of the brand and ensure that it is not lost. In my two years with the brand I have taken a gradual approach to change with the aim to improve all aspects of the way we work. We have introduced a Guaranteed Lowest Price scheme on core pieces that will never get reduced, started a Heal’s to Home scheme that gets certain products to you within two weeks, alongside bringing in approachable, accessible price points. Our Morten and Brunel ranges include beds, tables and sofas, all priced below the £1000 mark – the perfect pieces to furnish a first home with. Almost all of our products are hand-crafted to order in small workshops in the UK and Europe. We have also recently launched a bespoke sofa service called Designed by You, a market-leading response to the demand for personalisation and bespoke furniture solutions - you can choose your fabric, legs and design. This is the first store in the company’s history that has opened in the Midlands. What attracted you to Birmingham? I think the Midlands has been under-served for quality, aspirational home furnishings for a very long time, and as our second city, Birmingham is the obvious place to address that. It has definitely gone through a real rejuvenation over the last few years. For people who may not be familiar with Heal’s, how would you sum it up? The home of design since 1810. Heal’s prides itself on designing and creating contemporary furniture, what do you think the brand will bring to Mailbox? It is all about being relevant and contemporary but without losing sight of the incredible history that makes Heal’s so unique. We are

“Heal’s stands for three things: design, craftsmanship and quality.” bringing an edited collection of fabulous products to showcase what Heal’s stands for in a beautiful environment. I want it to be a joy to come and shop or just browse and be inspired at the new Heal’s store at Mailbox on Level One. What do you aim to provide for your customers? We aim to be the destination for design and inspiration for your home. Heal’s stands for three things: design, craftsmanship and quality. I want people to come in and be able to experience it and get excited by what we do.

What do you think makes your store unique? I don’t think anywhere else can offer the level of design and craftsmanship that goes into each and every one of our products, both Heal’s own pieces and our carefully curated set of internationally recognised designers and brands. There are lots of copies of famous designs out there, but if you want the authentic product you have to come to Heal’s. What is your favourite product and why? My chosen item is the Matera Sofa (above),

which is made from buttery-soft aniline leather and retails at £2,799. It takes its name from the southern Italian town where it is made. It is sleek, sophisticated and contemporary in an Italian style that is still incredibly comfortable - fusing great design with the ultimate in comfort, at a great price. We have also chosen it as one of the pieces that will be in the window of our Mailbox store, don’t let that put you off sitting on it though! Find Heal’s on Level One MAILBOXLIFE.COM | 13

I Interview

Behind the Brand: BoConcept BoConcept’s Country Manager UK and Ireland, Zoe Shields shares her insight after 16 years with the Danish brand

PROFILE:

Zoe Shields Country Manager Uk and Ireland Executive Retail Advisor Eastern Europe

How did you become involved with BoConcept and what attracted you to work for the company? BoConcept has been in the UK for 17 years and I’ve worked there for 16 years, so since the early days. I started working as a Store Manager and focused on opening stores, then I worked in the UK-based head office taking care of customer service and logistics. I then focused more on the buisness to business side of things, working with architects and designers on big projects. About 10 years ago, I moved back into retail and I have had the Country Manager’s role in the UK since then. I also take care of Eastern Europe and Ireland, which involves quite a lot of travelling. Typically, I try to be in every store three to four times a year and there are 40 in total. The brand has been designing and manufacturing for over 60 years. Since your time with BoConcept, how have you seen it progress and develop? It has changed a lot, we now have a much wider product selection. For example, when I started we only sold one type of sofa, the Indivi 16 | MAILBOXLIFE.COM

sofa. It is still one of our bestselling models, but at the time that was our only sofa design, whereas now we have over 20 different sofa models in the collection. What do you aim to provide for your customers? There are a few key things that make up BoConcept’s DNA, one is our free interior design service. We have qualified designers working in all the stores who go out to customers’ homes to really get to grips with how they live and how to help them design a space that suits their needs. The customisation element is also really important because within our product range we produce and manufacture everything. We have so many different options so you are getting close to having a bespoke product which is specific to your own individual taste. With Denmark at its core, how does the brand maintain Danish designs elements through its products? One of the things at our core is functionality. A product should always be beautiful, but it should also have good function, and that is very much the ethos behind Danish design. Most of our designers are actually Danish - it is all about simple lines, clean design and beautiful materials. We are about quality products that are built to last rather than something that has been mass-produced. What attracted you to opening in Birmingham? We have wanted to be here for a long time; this opportunity was just perfect because we’re coming together with all the other brands to bring this home destination to Birmingham, something which is really lacking in the city centre.

What experience can customers expect when they come in-store? We always want to find the best solutions for our customers. You will always get a warm welcome in our stores, our staff are very welltrained and attentive to customers’ needs. Service is so important in our business and we hope that every customer has a first-class experience whilst feeling at home within a relaxed, cosy environment. For people that may not be familiar with BoConcept, how would you sum it up? Clean lines, good function and customisation. Our interior design service is also at the heart of what we do. What makes the brand unique? A lot of it is about the people who work for BoConcept as they are all so passionate. They love the brand so much, which is infectious for our customers and they often end up feeling the same way towards it. It is not just about the products, it is about a lifestyle, which customers aspire to achieve. What is your favourite product available in-store and why? I chose the Imola chair because it is such a beautiful statement piece and one that is quite iconic to BoConcept. The inspiration for the design came from a tennis ball being unfolded. It is quite unusual that you have a piece of furniture that is so beautiful and feels really comfortable at the same time; it tends to be the really comfortable chair that is the ugly one. The Imola chair is sophisticated and elegant in whatever position you put it in. It is also really adaptable with different interiors. Find BoConcept on Level One
