FUTURE CHAU CHAK WING MUSEUM
Fut ure
Overload of Words
The theme emerged because participants said that their most boring experiences in a museum have been when the museum has felt like a textbook rather than an interactive or immersive experience. "When there's too much writing and not enough visuals, it is boring and takes away from the experience." "It should tell a story without overloading the information with only text."
Interactivity
Interactivity refers to the ability to use other senses besides merely looking at an exhibition. Most participants said that interactivity would make the museum experience more enjoyable and futuristic, especially in combination with technology. "I want to see interactive exhibitions - like the kinds that have interaction with art/music/drama" "I want to obtain an immersive experience that I can't find elsewhere" "[I dislike when] it's all just reading, no interaction."
New Perspective/Story
Noise & Crowds
This was a distinct theme that people said would really "make or break" the experience for them. A museum experience for the participants should be immersive and transform your perspective or give new insight. If it is too noisy or crowded, it is distracting and ruins the experience. "It was a noisy experience with many students from other schools. I was distracted, and I couldn't focus on listening to the explanations that were given."
The theme is about developing a new viewpoint or understanding based on the exhibition display. Participants stated that they would like to walk out of the museum with a new insight than that of which they came in, even if they already understood the context/story of the period before. "I like the exhibitions with a strong history and culture" "[I want to] understand how the past affects the present and [gain] different perspectives."
Interesting Display/Ambience
Participants want exhibitions to be interesting and displayed in a way that is immersive and interesting. This includes lighting, sound, audio etc. Building a harmonious mood/vibe inside the museum is vital for a rich user experience.
Lack of Context
"The best exhibitions combine, art, music, theatre, dance, visuals and light and are very interactive (all while introducing the history of the place in a positive way)"
This theme is about museums having enough information for visitors to understand the significance of the exhibitions without overloading them with information and being too text heavy. There should be the right balance but explain the meaning and importance. "I don't appreciate or relate to abstract art, so I couldn't understand the significance of it. I was confused and wanted to leave."
This poster shares the insights of 8 people aged 20-29 (using context mapping). It reveals their emotions and feelings towards the current museum experience. Through careful data analysis, we have uncovered the six main themes of how to make the museum experience more futuristic and remain relevant. | Amber Linz, Rachel Amin, Riley Leong & Ashley Hu |
